SCAD Group exhibition 'ELIZABETH CATLETT: POINTS OF CONTACT' SEPT. 23, 2021 - JAN. 30, 2022 Presented in the SCAD Museum of Art’s Evans Center for African American Studies, Elizabeth Catlett: Points of Contact is a long overdue exploration of the artist’s profound influence on artistic practice today. The group exhibition brings to view key prints and sculptures by Catlett (1915–2012) — a citizen of both the U.S. and Mexico — in conversation with contemporary works by living artists from both countries. In showcasing the work of contemporary Black American and Mexican artists with strong connections — sometimes direct references — to Catlett’s work, the exhibition demonstrates how the artist’s influences, concerns, and questions are very much alive in global contemporary culture and artistic practice, and highlights the ways in which her works advocate for the dignity of all humans. In this BAIA Talk exclusive, artist and photographer Todd Gray discusses his most recent exhibit, Matrix 186 (March 4 - July 18, 2021) and what inspires his work, with Faron Manuel, Independent Curator, and Tracy Ann Simmons, Miami Culture Maven. Detailing his radical take on photography and assemblage, and countering mental colonialism through his art, Gray sheds light on his journey and what his art making practice entails.

'Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design' Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter is an expert storyteller who harnesses the power of visual communication to share vital narratives exploring culture, race, and politics. Creating costumes for generation- defining films like Black Panther, Selma, and Do the Right Thing, she brings vibrancy, nuance, color, and texture to each of her culture-shifting characters. SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta has more than 60 costumes by Carter currently on view through September 12, as well as sketches and ephemera illustrating the designer’s in-depth historical research and creative process for each project.   The Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design exhibition at SCAD FASH features unforgettable designs from nearly four decades of her career within an Afrofuturistic installation incorporating original artwork by SCAD illustration alumnus Brandon Sadler, whose work was prominently featured in Black Panther. Inspired by African masks and Nigerian textiles, Sadler’s work for the exhibition connects Carter’s celebrated costume designs across various time periods and themes within the overarching concept of Afrofuturism. Independent curator, Faron Manuel and Jamaal Barber of Studio Noize Podcast interview Frank Mitchell, curator of the exhibition Afrocosmologies: American Reflections at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art for this episode of BAIA Talks. Afrocosmologies: American Reflections October 19, 2019 – January 20, 2020 Black artists explore spirituality and culture in Afrocosmologies: American Reflections. Alongside artists of the late-nineteenth century, contemporary artists define new ideas about spirituality, identity, and the environment in ways that move beyond traditional narratives of Black Christianity. In dialogue, these works acknowledge a continuing body of beliefs—a cosmology—that incorporates the centrality of nature, ritual, and relationships between the human and the divine. Emerging from the rich religious and aesthetic traditions of West Africa and the Americas, these works present a dynamic cosmos of influences that shape Contemporary art. The exhibition brings together the work of an incredible assortment of artists including Romare Bearden, Dawoud Bey, Elizabeth Catlett, Willie Cole, Melvin Edwards, Titus Kaphar, Lois Mailou Jones, Kerry James Marshall, Alison Saar, Hale Woodruff, Shinique Smith, and Kehinde Wiley along with many additional artists of note. It is accompanied by a 156-page, fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Frank Mitchell, Berrisford Boothe, Claudia Highbaugh, and Kristin Hass.

Najee Dorsey in conversation with Ulysses Marshall. Mr. Marshall was born in 1946 in Vienna, Georgia. He was educated at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia in sociology. He received his Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Arts in Baltimore. Furthermore, he went onto receive his Masters degree from Baltimore, Maryland. He is the receipient of the Distinguished Whitney Independent Study Fellowship, New York. He has also received the Phillip Morris Fellowship and several Maryland State Art Council Individual Artist Awards.Trained as a painter, Ulysses Marshall works principally in collage, paper doll and mixed media. His paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Vietnam Veterans Museum, Woodmere Art Museum, John Heinz History Museum, Williams College, DeMenil Art Gallery and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.His works are also included in both private and public collections, in additions to lecturing at Colleges and Universities; he has continued to conduct workshops for children. "My goal as an artist is to use these story tales as a tool for sharing the plight of the almost forgotten colored people. I wish to preserve the pride, dignity, courage, and survival of a people's journey from slavery to slave. A people whose lives have been bent, but not broken." Najee Dorsey in conversation with Dean L. Mitchell. Dean was born 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and reared in Quincy, Florida. He is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. Mitchell is well known for his figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. Najee Dorsey in conversation with Nelson Stevens. Nelson received a BFA degree from Ohio University and MFA degree from Kent State University. Early in his training, he found himself in the position of having to prove to his professors in the Art Department that there is in fact such a thing as “Black Art." Asserting that prejudice did indeed exist in the art world, he refuted the popular “art for art sake" paradigm, insisting instead that “art is for the sake of people." Nelson Stevens taught for over 30 years both in the Art Department and the Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has always advocated for and promoted aesthetic integrity within the Black community, catapulting numerous groundbreaking projects that are rooted in a strong philosophy concerning the cultural currency of African Americans. His signature style, which applies bold color, unexpected lines, and unabashed tributes to historical and contemporary iconic figures, is well known to many. Stevens was an early member of the pioneering Chicago organization AFRICOBRA along with other renowned artists such as Wadsworth Jarrell, Jeff Donaldson and Adger Cowans. Nelson Stevens" work may be found in many private and public collections including the Smithsonian, Schomberg's Library and Research Center in New York City, and the Chicago Institute of Art, among others. His widely acclaimed project, “Art in the Service of the Lord" commissioned African American artists to create sacred works for a Black Christian Fine Arts Calendar that existed for four years and circulated 15,000 copies annually. As an act of resistance against brutal law enforcement upon black and brown bodies, artists have taken to public art to express their contempt. On walls around the world, you can find murals dedicated to the lives of fallen civilians who were victims of police brutality. These murals, in public spaces, allow the message of injustices to reach audiences who might not read newspaper editorials, attend community town hall meetings, or march at rallies about the issue. A mural for Sandra Bland was erected in Ontario Canada, one for Trayvon Martin in Brooklyn New York, and one for Eric Garner in St. Louis. While each of these murals was painted in cities other than those communities where the victims lived or lost their lives, they were created to espouse a sense of solidarity amongst communities and convey the idea that we are all in this together. Shelia Pree Bright’s most current work, 1960Now evolved from Bright’s public art series 1960Who, a street art gallery showing epic-sized portraits of unknown youth leaders of the 1960s who where members of the Civil Rights Movement, but not widely known. The series launched 4 years ago in Atlanta which received national attention as it was covered by Huffington Post in 2013. Bright placed larger than life portraits of young people of the 1960’s on walls in downtown Atlanta. The portraits showed faces of HBCU members of the Atlanta Student Movement and Freedom Riders from Atlanta to Connecticut. I first met Barbara Bullock while attending the opening reception and lecture of A Collaborative Language: Selection from the Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI) now in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) on September 15th, 2017 we both were exhibiting in. I introduced myself to her. She quickly mentioned how she has been a long standing member of Black Art In America and visits the site often. I don’t know how we got on the subject. I was scheduled to call Moe Brooker to drop by his studio for a visit and that’s when she said I should visit her and she was close by. The following audio, video and pictures will act as archives of the time we spent getting to know one another and quickly becoming fast friends. This exhibition and collaboration between artists and institutions represent an inspired effort to celebrate the creative process and the sharing of that engagement with audiences of artists, educators and students. This exhibition also features over 55 prints created at EPI by such renowned artists as David C. Driskell, Willie Cole, Benny Andrews, Faith Ringgold and Radcliffe Bailey.The Experimental Printmaking Institute at LaFayette College in Easton, PA was founded by Curlee Holton. “EPI has been passionately committed to advancing the printmaking process as a dynamic and relevant art form for purposes of cultural and creative engagement. The inherent nature of the printmaking medium encourages a communal participation by artists and students alike. EPI uses traditional printmaking techniques in concert with experimental approaches as a means of expanding our visual language.
