The Bard College Dance Program, located 90 miles north of New York City in the Hudson Valley and housed in the Frank Gehry designed Fisher Center, sees the pursuit of artistry and intellect as a single endeavor and the study of the body as a cognitive act, demanding both physical practice and exploration of the broader academic contexts in which the art form exists. Through intensive technique and composition courses, onstage performance, and production experience, dance students are prepared to understand and practice the art of choreography and performance. Since 2009, the Bard Dance Program has hosted an in-residence dance company or performing arts organization bringing professional technique and composition to the academic program in the form of teaching, educational licensing projects, master classes, full-Company production residencies, and public performances. This week on Conversations on Dance, we are happy to bring you a chat with our friend, Damien Johnson. The topic of today’s conversation was suggested by one of our listeners who was looking for us to delve into male specific training and some of the issues that arise that are different from females in the field. Damien is a permanent guest faculty member at The School of American Ballet, and a sought after teacher who is certified in the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum in Pre-Primary-Level 3 as well as classical Pilates through Power Pilates. It was just announced that Damien will be stepping into the role of Upper Division Head at The Washington School of Ballet after his recent time as a faculty at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet.
Damien is the perfect person to chat with about this topic as he shares advice for young male dancers navigating an aspiring career in ballet.
Special thanks to Brett Elizabeth Gardner for this topic suggestion. As a parent of a male dancer, who is now a part of a second company, Brett has founded The Ballet Help Desk, to help other parents support their dancers as they navigate the serious ballet training path. The Ballet Help Desk provides an extensive digital library, featuring a collection of articles and videos. Users can explore various topics, ranging from the path to becoming a professional dancer to how to choose a ballet residential program to how ballet competitions fit into the mix. Be sure the check them out at ballethelpdesk.com.

Wed, 01 Feb 2023 - 38min - 556 - (325) LIVE from Works & Process at the Guggenheim: ‘The Night Falls’
Today's episode of ‘Conversations On Dance' is a live podcast from the Guggenheim's Works & Process series. We explore the creation of a new dance driven music theater production ‘The Night Falls', which is set to run February 9th through 12th at Montclair State University. ‘The Night Falls' is a new myth for our fractured era, depicting the metamorphosis of atomized individuals into a true community, with choreography that dramatizes the leap of empathy between bodies and music that channels the polarities of surrender and resistance. In this interview, we are joined by the show's creative team, choreographer and director Troy Schumacher, composer and co-lyricist Ellis Ludwig-Leone and librettist and co-lyricist Karen Russell. Tickets for ‘The Night Falls' can be found at peakperfs.org.
We are happy to be able to share a visual companion to this episode. To watch the full interview including the dancing and signing segments, visit Works & Process' YouTube Channel, or click here: https://youtu.be/FfidIh8pi0o.
This episode was recorded live on January 22, 2023 as a part of Guggenheim's Works & Process.
‘The Night Falls': Co-produced by BalletCollective, Inc., and PEAK Performances at Montclair State University. The Night Falls was developed during a 2018 residency for Project Springboard: Developing Dance Musicals with further support provided during a virtual creative residency in 2021. This season was made possible, in part, by the Alexander Kasser Theater Endowment Fund, PEAK Patrons, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The BFA Dance program at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University prepares students to be at the forefront of dance innovation through performance, choreographic and critical historical and theoretical exploration. Studying dance at Johns Hopkins, one of the world’s premier research institutions, gives students the opportunity to make connections between dance, science, technology, and the humanities. Peabody students take courses in Modern Dance, African Expressions, Ballet, somatic approaches to movement, choreography, and dance as social justice; perform in a pre-professional student dance company, and collaborate with world-renowned guest artists. From the first year, students have the opportunity to choreograph their own pieces. At Peabody, we welcome a broad range of creative voices and prepare student artists for success in the real world. Submit your application by December 1st. Learn more at Peabody.jhu.edu/dancebfa
