While we were in the same city, I decided to contact him and see if he would be up for an interview. He gladly accepted. Apollo Fates is one of gay adult entertainment's stars who in my opinion is still bubbling under; his talents and work are very well received and definitely noticed but I still think it is scratching under the surface. I first saw Apollo perform in a couple of scenes for Vision X Studios and knew the next time I find myself in L.A., I'd have to try and work with him. We did and it was lovely!

During a recent visit to New York City, I was able to sit down and get to know Apollo, one on one. Apollo discusses his childhood, bouncing around the greater Los Angles area in the flawed foster care system, the experience of living with his biological mother, coming out, relationships and the industry, ultimately leading to how he ended up being Apollo Fates.

The late 1970s were an representational awakening  for homosexual men. They began to embrace  a new vision of themselves as hyper masculine. The rise of the clone look and of bars that catered to them helped push forward this new gay masculinity, but porn took it to the rest of the country and the man who bridged the old world of the closeted straight man and the new gay masculine sexuality was filmmaker Joe Gage. 

The Road movie as a cinematic genre emerged after world war 2 and reflected both the advent of the automobile as a fundamental expression of individualism. And the emergence of a mobile young suburban population looking for adventure. The combination of these elements plus the exploration of male sexual desire among working class and rural men were brought together by Joe Gage in his Working Man Trilogy. 

Often called the OG Daddy of Gay Porn, Richard Locke, burst onto the gay erotic film scene in 1974 and quickly became a fixture among gay men who were into the rugged and sexy male look that differed from the clone look depicted in films made in California. But Locke was more of a renaissance man all rolled into one human.

It’s 1971 and you’re at a Groovy Guy Contest. There, you set your eyes on Jimmy Hughes. Hughes would go on to win the contest and become a sought after model during the early part of the 1970’s before being entangled in rape and kidnapping charges that would landed him in jail in 1974.

When a feature film becomes a massive box office hit, it has the capacity of shifting the cultural landscape, putting its finger on the pulse of the day and age. How did an expatriate eccentric Englishman armed with a video camera become the Grandfather of Gay Porn?  Peter De Rome, whose erotic films were made at a time when doing so was incredibly dangerous and would later gain recognition in the 70’s by Jack Deveau and then again some 40 years later with a new generation. 

The story behind Peter De Rome’s The Destroying Angel came to be when De Rome noticed that by the mid 70s many subjects were tackled by the gay erotic film except for horror. At that same time, DeRome had wanted to make a film that had been lingering in his mind about twins. What De Rome ended up making was a psychosexual, horror film that bends so many genres. 

Will Seagers appeared in some of the most iconic gay porn films of all time, working with other legendary talent and filmmakers.  He was stunning, having come into his looks in his 20’s and becoming the quintessential 1970’s man, everyone lusted over. 

In this episode, we will celebrate Peter De Rome, a charming Englishman and cinematic outlaw  who channeled his erotic side and experimented with putting his unique vision on celluloid and contributed some of the best gay erotic films in the industry’s history. Jack Deveau has been called the master of narrative gay porn. During the 1970’s he molded moody stories that were filled with hot sex and sociopolitical messages and heavily plotted films that still resonate today.  Deveau, along with his lover and business partner Robert Alvarez presided over one of the most well-regraded studios of the day, Hand in Hand, that shot and distributed gay erotic movies.  

And though many have said the best of these films is A Night at The Adonis, it is his inaugural film, Left-Handed that is in my eyes the perfect combination of experimental meets story and some steamy sex scenes.

Roger Earl was a documentarian who managed to capture intense BDSM and kink sessions in some of the truest forms of erotic cinema verité, often polarizing and definitely shocking viewers. Earl’s Born to Raise Hell was made at the same time as the other gay landmark films. However, this film’s focus is primarily on gay male sadomasochistic practices and mostly devoid of any traces of tenderness or romance. Val Martin was a fixture in the middle of the golden era of gay porn, starring in various films that teetered on S&M. In the BDSM subsection, Val Martin was a god.

Jerry Douglas wore many hats, as a novelist playwright and theater director, but here we will celebrate him as the gay porn director, film historian, storyteller and a mentor to many figures in the gay porn industry today. 

Douglas is justly celebrated at the director of The Back Row one of the first hardcore films made after Stonewall. Watching it today, The Back Row is a  precious artifact showing a pre-Disney Times Square and the seedy, gritty,  70’s New York City that is legend to many people who remember it. But The Back Row also documented a fixture in the culture of gay cruising, the movie theater. 

Not a lot of people in adult today remember George Payne, though he was one of the more recognizable stars of the golden age of adult film in New York. Payne entered the porn industry in 1972 appearing in The Back Row after coming to New York to do male swimsuit modeling and initially marketed himself towards a gay audience. He transitioned over to the straight side of the industry eventually and gained notoriety for his intense portrayals.

Porn stars embody the sexual ideals of gay men. It is the porn star’s sexual performance that is the portal through which viewers engage with a pornographic movie. Director Fred Halsted considered hardcore porn a performer’s medium—as well as the cameraman’s. We met at a dusty motel room in central New Jersey and shot the shit for about an hour about the growing pains early on in life. It wasn't until high school where although bullied, King Dwarf received a confidence boost when the guys in the locker room began to notice and admire his big dick!

Champ Robinson has been in the middle of a relaunch and promoting his new website Vision X.  On top of that he has been more open about collaborating and also sharing scenes with models that originally belonged solely to him.

In the late 2010's I began seeing a phrase or new sexual orientation rather, called "the Pornosexual." A pornosexual, more recently also referred to as a solosexual as well, describes a person whose sexual orientation is linked solely to porn.  It's become so easy to get your hands on porn today that some people just don't feel the need to have another person in the room.  

I received a message from a listener named Timmy, a self-described pornosexual who is a gay man in his mid-sixties who discovered porn while in his teens by way of Blue Boy magazines and VHS tapes. After a 26 year long relationship Timmy is now in a healthy relationship with himself and his love of porn. 

During our conversation we discover a little more about the age demographic of gay men who lived through the AIDS epidemic; a time where being alone and finding new ways to get off may have saved your life. What can I say about Youtube Star Davey Wavey that he hasn’t already said or that you might not be aware of?  

I got an email from Davey Wavey in March about connecting and was blown away; how on earth did he find my dog and pony show? Lol! Of course I know who Davey is but it wasn’t until a listener of the podcast asked me about a studio called Himeros TV that I finally made the correlation. Did you know that since the late 1990's there have been gay men who actually fetishize and fantasize about getting HIV?
