- 27 - Episode XVIII - Fjord Focus: Viking Metal, Nordic Nationalism and Folk Revivalism
In these unprecedented times, can we even recall the last opportunity we could all collectively go on a good pillaging? As was embellished on ancient mystic runes by the hands of the Old Gods themselves, it all seems so “Bjorn today, gone tomorrow” right now. Nevertheless, such as the langskip was built to sever through the Baltic seas, we too must sally forward. In this week’s feature episode, Matthew, Jamie and Tom fill their mead horns to the brim and regale tales of Norse mysticism, Scandi paganism, geo-nationalism and Amon Amarth-isms. It’s that rather problematic, contrary, paradoxical, yet oddly engaging caricature of a sub-genre, Viking Metal, with all untamed confusion of sonics and symbolism in tow. From 60s counterculture to folk horror revivalism, we go from Asgard to Valhalla with this one. So put aside your great axes, lay down your historically inaccurate helmets and let us Ragnarok your world.

Mon, 01 Feb 2021 - 51min - 21 - Episode XVII - In The Year Of Our Dark Lord: 2020
Time. It’s a cruel mistress. The cyclical nature of our circadian rhythms. The persistent numbing of periodical cues from nature. Light. Dark. Light. Darker still. Each and every calendar month morphing into the next like the grotesquely genteel evolution of man. Is it just us, or does your endogenous clock need a good horological service? 2020 came and went like the provisional packet of Frubes issued in the lamentable free school meals scheme with the intent to feed the young minds of tomorrow but instead fed the profit margins of outsourced catering services. Blink and it was gone. And yet, somehow, such is the insistence of time, we find ourselves in 2021. So what better way to take stock of where we’re at than by reviving a podcast no one knew they wanted or needed? Ex Inferis returns with an incoherent review of the worst year to ever call itself a year: 2020. Because even if death is but another government (mis)led daily briefing away, at least Eternal Champion released a really good record. Yes, we’re back and less prepared than ever.
Sun, 24 Jan 2021 - 1h 54min - 20 - Episode XVI - Glenn Danzig's Verotika: Citizen Kane It Ain't
Cinema. The Silver Screen. “The most beautiful fraud in the world,” as Godard once imperiously joshed. Where art and technology coalesce to portray realities akin to that of our wildest dreams. Where the West remains Wild. Where science and fiction transport us to the outer realms of our farthest galaxies. Where our greatest fears manifest into consciousness before our very eyes and love forever triumphs over evil. It could also be where you witness pornstars with eyeballs for nipples accidentally summon a demonic albino spider, pornstars with a penchant for stealing faces attempt to strip-dance for hours and pornstars mispronounce words such as ‘virgin’ while bathing in pools of other pornstars’ blood. That’s right, for this episode of Ex Inferis, Matt, Tom and Jamie endure the odious hellscape of Glenn Danzig’s directorial debut, Verotika. The bois go to absolute town on the who’s, when’s, how’s and, for the love of Beelzebub, the WHY OH WHY’s of this complete career killing car crash of a movie. Grab yourself some milk…or beer…because this is going to be worse than getting knocked out by North Side Kings and claiming it was a set-up…
Sun, 17 May 2020 - 2h 02min - 19 - Episode XV - Tolkien In Metal Part II: Lord of the Strings
You may all be familiar with the time old adage: “It’s the end of the world as we know it.” If only we spent less time listening to South of Heaven and more time listening to Michael Stipe, we may have been far better equipped to tackle this period of unending calamity. Nonetheless, content creation must remain defiant in these end times. Suffice to say, the Bois From Below have fully sterilised their work stations to bring you Part II of their epic journey in Tolkien Metal. Tom reels of band references that would send Encyclopaedia Metallum to a 404 gateway, Matt talks about Tolkien’s racial readings and Jamie brings a book to show us (he’s still very green to this whole podcast lark...). Stay safe, wash your hands, listen to metal!
Sun, 22 Mar 2020 - 1h 33min - 18 - Episode XIV - In The Year Of Our Dark Lord: 2019
As we expeditiously bid farewell to another decade and enter a new epoch of Our Dark Lord, we thought it best to bequeath unto Her zealot disciples a special In The Year Of Our Dark Lord...2019. In this episode, the bois from below ruminate over band feuds, nudes and lewd dudes. Matt drinks Black Label at 9am, Tom chomps down on some Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce like a BM Sean Evans and Jamie chooses to not speak about anything other than Star Wars and Idle Hands. In a truly halcyon year for metal, we also reflect over some of the year’s best and worst releases. Like Code Orange, 2019 is dead. Long live 2020.

Sat, 07 Dec 2019 - 59min - 16 - Episode XIII - Tolkien In Metal Part I: A Little Middle Earth In Your Middle Eight
One ring to rule them all and just three boiz to get all the lore wrong. On this episode of Ex Inferis, the boys from the below tackle the expansive topic of maybe the most influential figure in metal history next to our dark lord himself, J R R Tolkien. In part 1 of this subject, we look at the early years of Tolkien’s life and his philosophy as Jamie takes us on a deep dive into the sacred texts of Tolkien’s mythos and how this influenced the early years of the rock and metal genres. From Bag End to blast beats, the Unholy Trinity leaves no Hobbit hole unexplored.
Fri, 06 Dec 2019 - 1h 26min - 15 - Episode XII - From Bloodbaths to Mud Sharks: Horror Stories from the Metalsphere
“Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent,” once wrote Isaac Asimov. Clearly, this glorified space poet had never fully appreciated the unending bloodthirst shared by such human monsters as Nattram of Silencer or Niklas Kvarforth of Shining. Speaking of violent incompetence, the bois from below return for a horrific special of guts, gore and mudsharks. In this episode, Matt and Tom retch and writhe about some of metal’s nastiest characters doing some particularly nasty things. From Led Zep to Stalaggh to Gorgoroth to Clown’s fermented birds, we got all your ghastly festishes for the macabre covered. Also, bear with us on this one. We were disastrously hungover and could barely string together a single coherent thought. But that’s metal for you, baby
Fri, 08 Nov 2019 - 1h 19min - 14 - Episode XI - Fear & Loathing Inoculum: Understanding Tool In a Taylor Swift Generation
“Death is but a doorway, time is but a window, I’ll be back,” said Dan Aykroyd in Ghostbusters II. However, if one replaces the word ‘window’ with the number 7 and then inverts the sentence into a spiral, you will notice that the whole sentence resembles the anus of Italian mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci. It would be obscene to infer that Dan Aykroyd anticipated such a thing during the filming of Ghostbusters II. And because of this, we decide to discuss the new Tool record instead. Death is but a doorway, time is but a window. Tool are back.
Thu, 19 Sep 2019 - 56min - 13 - Episode X - Neurosis: Through Silver and Blood
As if ordained by the Archangel Mephistopheles herself, da bois from da pits hit something of an anniversary with their latest instalment of Ex Inferis. In an episode proportionately as long as one of their subject's songs, the tenth episode sees Matt and Tom spin yarns of yesterweek when many a metal fan was treated to the devilish delights of Yob, Godflesh and, of course, Neurosis live at Kentish Town O2 Forum. After a few vulgar displays of poorly constructed criticism, the duo endeavour to explore the trials and tribulations of Neurosis the band. Matt delves deep into their early works and proto-Sludge influences while Tom touches on their later career, side-projects and collaborative efforts. Oh, and there’s some general chatter over Orange Goblin’s Ben Ward and how he KO’d a kid with a single hi-five. Make sure to stream the fully remastered landmark record Neurosis & Jarboe via Neurot Recordings over on @bandcamp. Available to purchase for the first time ever on vinyl as well as CD and other digital formats: https://neurotrecordings.merchtable.com/mobile/artists/neurosis
Thu, 01 Aug 2019 - 1h 48min - 12 - Episode IX - Florida Death Metal: Heavy Noise and Sweaty Bois
Like Lovecraftian shadows out of time, the bois return for the latest instalment of the show that no being knew they could live without, Ex Inferis. Episode 9 tightens its Bible Belt a few notches and sets its ruinous gaze on the Sunshine State as Tom and Matt audit the genesis of Florida Death Metal. From the prototypical seeds sown by thrash revisionists Nasty Savage and Savatage, the show delves deep in to some of the scene’s most infinitely pressing questions such as “Was the Morbid Angel’s involvement with the ‘Satanic Panic’ a government coverup?” “How is Chuck Schuldiner so attractive?” And “Glen Benton? Really?” Apologies for the delay with this one, we’ve both been super busy but hope you enjoy! Hit us up on the socials too!
Thu, 18 Jul 2019 - 1h 26min - 11 - Episode VIII - Watch The Throne: Darkthrone's Top Ten Best Records
This week the boys from below take a closer look at the back catalogue of one of the most seminal metal acts to celebrate the release of their new record Old Star. Darkthrone, over the span of their 33 year career, have transcended their humble beginnings as a Swedish inflected Death Metal band to become an exemplar of the Black Metal genre. Though their flirtations with other genres don't stop there. Whilst their discography is far too vast to cover in its entirety, we take you through our top ten of their studio album releases. Some of the entries may even shock and disgust you.

Fri, 31 May 2019 - 51min - 9 - Episode VII - Cave In & Caleb Scofield: His Final Transmission
Just over a year ago, the metal community lost one of our most colossal innovators, Caleb Scofield. An unrestrained creative force, the bassist and singer helped in outlining the blueprint of metalcore in the late 90s in aid of his involvement with alternative metal chieftains, Cave In. A regular collaborator with Converge and Isis, Caleb’s contribution to not only his primary band’s success, but with post-hardcore experimentalists Old Man Gloom and post-sludge revisionists Zozobra, continues to resonate and influence modern players to this day. But while his passing will never fully heal over, the boys from below, Matt and Tom take more of a celebratory retrospective of Scofield’s life and cultural impact. With Cave In’s last ever record with Caleb’s involvement, The Final Transmission, set to drop within the forthcoming weeks, let’s use this opportunity to remember a man with a bass tone like the ringing of Satan’s bells and a voice like...more ringing of Satan’s bells.

Fri, 24 May 2019 - 1h 10min - 7 - Episode VI - Batushka Vs. Batushka: Two Bands Enter...
Things get a little prickly on this week's episode as the boys from below discuss a heated internet tiff between two warring factions. Poland's Batushka, once at the forefront of contemporary extreme metal now find a schism in the band and their existence in question as two member's battle it out to maintain control of the project music and identity. What will come of such a toxic and public dispute and can there really be a winner?

Fri, 17 May 2019 - 1h 00min - 5 - Episode V - The Devil's Backline: The Boss HM-2
Following a wholly unwarranted break, the Boys From Below return to their usual haphazard mode of transmission with extra vulgar displays of topical smut and name mispronunciations. This week, we take umbrage with one of Heavy Metal’s most notoriously influential guitar pedals, the Boss HM-2. Since its demonic inception in 1983, this technical omnishambles is almost solely responsible for the nascent sounds of early 90s Swedish Death Metal, while its practically inaudible tone continues to beguile and disgust contemporary metal guitarists to this day. Throughout the episode, Tom endeavours to make snide off-base remarks on the pedal’s existential merits and Matt offers up an unabridged historical timeline before giving the Boss Corporation’s bawdy baby a live test drive. Max out your EQs; it’s the only way you’re going to enjoy this one...
