To mark Sridevi's birthday this year, we gave ourselves an assignment: finally watch some of her films that have been on our lists but we just haven't gotten around to yet. Pitu picked Jaag Utha Insan, and she will explain her choice and regrets. Beth picked Sri's first Hindi film as a lead, Solva Sawan, which was, frankly, rough going. Then we have a long discussion on the perpetual issue with Sridevi films: she's always so much better than the men opposite her, and if you want to prioritize the films that are written for her to be the unquestioned number one lead, you run out of options way too fast.

To mark our 200th—yes TWO HUNDREDTH—episode, we chose a film that celebrates cinematic history. Harishchandrachi Factory is a Marathi film about the making of the very first feature film in India, and it's a peculiarly light-hearted approach to an event with massive consequences.

Dadasaheb Phalke is portrayed as a less crabby Willy Wonka, surrounded by people who mostly say yes, easily, to all his whims. This film is missing much commentary on the significance of Phalke's work beyond "it was the first feature film" and spends no energy investigating anything juicy—what was it like to undertake such a project as a person of color in a subject area of the British empire? what sacrifices were made to appease investors? what was it like to shoot on location?—but it's a very enjoyable presentation of time period and a group of people that all of us movie-mad folks should know more about.

No mere Merchant and Ivory for us: we're going much further afield with Siddhartha (1972), based on the Herman Hesse novel and directed by American Conrad Rooks, and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), directed and written by Brits Stephen Frears and Hanif Kureishi. These films have more in common than we thought, but one of them is much less irritating than the other.

Either way, these are films that only Shashi Kapoor could have done, and we are so glad he gave them a try. What a career!

We've discussed Indians making films set elsewhere, and now it's time to flip the script: foreigners making films set in India! Don't worry, we steered very, very clear of the Eat Pray Love trap 🤢. Yellow is so many things - it's cheery, happy, positive, optimistic, and literally sunny as in the color of the sun! But it's also a color associated with fear, unease, cowardice, and the oppressive heat and dangerous conditions of the desert.

We are not aMUSEd. Ugh, these movies. It's Beth's fault that we watched them, and we're both glad to have finally seen these films and we can have informed opinions...but unfortunately those opinions are quite negative.

The real takeaway is that men authoring stories about how women inspire them is quite unnecessary and just takes up more air in the room that could have gone to women authoring their own stories. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

These films had us ALL STIRRED UP! The great Indian Kitchen, starring the wonderful Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu and directed by Jeo Baby, is a quiet, clear, almost documentary-like look at the erosion of a woman's life and self in her in-laws' house. The Hindi remake Mrs., starring Sanya Malhotra and Nishant Dahiya and directed by Arati Kadav, is a slightly different but still very effective flavor.

This is the first episode in a new series about films we associate with particular colors. Black may be the most complicated color, evoking traits from elegance and edge to sadness, anger, mourning, and destructiveness. For a color that can be so striking, it often screams "don't look too closely."

Neither of us could resist choosing a black and white film, but that's where the similarities end: Satyajit Ray's Nayak (Bengali, 1966), where black is cool, distant, and protective, and Bramayugam (Malayalam, 2024), where black is unstable and unknowable.

Both Anjali and Poo are grown up and being badass detectives in Do Patti (2024) and The Buckingham Murders (2023). While we enjoyed both movies, there were quite a few things that made us go HUH??? Kriti Sanon also turns in a Seeta aur Geeta twin role but it's all quite bleak.

This week we focus on Feroz's Dharmatma, his 1975 adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972).

* This episode contains spoilers for both the original and this adaptation! *

* Content warning: this film is very violent towards women. It's violent in general, of course, but it feels extra brutal towards a few of its women, with at least one significant change from the arc of one of the original corresponding characters. We don't discuss this in-depth but please know that some scenes in this film are hard to watch. •

Pitu approaches her first viewing of Dharmatma as a Godfather fan and especially likes its twist on handling Michael Corleone and his relationship to his family. Beth has seen it multiple times and it sates her love of 70s style and character actors. This film doesn't seem to get mentioned as often in discussions of Hindi gangster films as maybe it should, especially since it's the first of the Indian remakes of The Godfather, and as we go through its strengths and weaknesses, we come to some conclusions as to why.

We are firmly in the 80s now as Meenakshi Seshadri is our first 80s superstar.

A beautiful, talented actress and dancer, she doesn't get talked about as much as she should - and we are a bit puzzled as to why.

Are you a Meenakshi fan and do you consider her a superstar? Which of her films or performances do you enjoy?

Films discussed: Ghayal, Ghar Ho To Aisa, Swati, and Dilwaala. We have both seen and love Damini but completely forgot to cover it; obviously she is amazing in it and it is essential to her legacy!

(PS Beth realizes she said "I have heard so much about Meenakshi over the years" AND "I must not have heard that many people talking about her," and obviously those cannot both be true. She meant that she has heard the name frequently but not much in-depth discussion.)
