Greetings Podcast listeners! Welcome back to a new episode of Britain in 1919–1939. In this episode, we will be looking at how the British prepared for the Second World War.

After a relatively peaceful 1920s, the prospect of a second world war began to show itself in the 1930s. With conflict spouting from the rules of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, countries tried their best to avoid another costly war. Aside from a policy of non-involvement in the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939, Britain and France embarked on a policy of appeasement in the 1930s.

The period of time between 1929 and 1939 is sometimes referred to as ‘The Devil’s Decade’. Aside from the rise in extremism that took place during the decade, and the commencement of the Second World War, the beginning of the decade is marred by the Great Depression as the Wall Street Stock Market crashed following the post-war industrial boom of the iron and steel, construction, automobile and retail industries in ‘The Roaring Twenties’. While the Soviet Union’s leaders and authorities officially condemned nationalism and proclaimed internationalism, including their support of self-determination, in actual truth, many ethnic groups within the Soviet Union were treated horrendously.

While the founder of Soviet Russia, Vladimir Lenin, had implemented a policy of korenization, which meant the integration of non-Russian nationalities into the governments of their specific Soviet republics, Stalin doubled down on many of these policies, instead branding a number of ethnic groups as ‘traitors’ and exiling them to Siberia or Central Asia as second-class citizens with restricted freedom and rights. In fact, the actions taken by Stalin can be described as ‘ethnic cleansing’ as they resulted in the forced deportation of millions of people and a large number of deaths.

Shortly after he gained control over the party, Stalin embarked on a period of radicalisation of the Soviet foreign policy that aligned with his hardline domestic policies. To convey a sense of emergency for modernising the Soviet Union, Stalin portrayed the Western powers, with France in particular, as violent nations who were seeking to attack and destroy the Soviet nation. Domestically, Stalin eliminated any forms of opposition to his power, replacing those in positions of power with his friends and allies. With this, Stalin shaped the foreign policy of the Soviet Union.

In this episode, we will look at the policies and views of Stalin toward women.

If you remember from Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy, women were treated as a whole different class to men and had a specific set of ideals put upon them. But in Stalin’s Russia, there were fundamental differences in how he viewed women, as compared with Mussolini and Hitler.

In fact, before 1924, the Soviet government had tried to liberate women and establish gender equality as they took steps to weaken the traditional family structure which exploited women. Left-feminist Bolshevik leaders, like Alexandra Kollontai, were the frontrunners in advocating for quality, although Lenin’s views remained somewhat conservative.

For this episode, I will begin by observing a number of policies of The Soviet Socialist Republic, under both Lenin and Stalin. Later, we will be looking at the roles of women in employment.

By 1941, the Nazi German government was centralised, with Hitler in a dictatorial position, and the Nazis having one-party control over the government and wider society. Hitler was able to achieve this by implementing one-party rule, repressing opposition with legislature and violence, removing those who did not align with the ideology of the Nazi Party and using propaganda to indoctrinate citizens, although he faced challenges from opposition within society and the Church.

In Moscow, at around 4 am, President Putin announced the commencement of a "special military operation" in the Donbas region of Ukraine.

Not long after, explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and the Donbas.

Ukrainian officials reported Russian troops landing in Mariupol and Odesa, and they launched cruise and ballistic missiles at airfields, military headquarters and depots in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.

Military vehicles entered Ukraine through Belarus, Russia and Russian-annexed Crimea in the morning.

What caused the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine?

Ukraine was one of the administrative units of the Soviet Union from it’s foundation in 1922 until it was dissolved in 1991. After this, Ukraine became an independent state, a country in it’s own right, which is now controlled by a Unitary semi-presidential republic, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy as President since 2019.

Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has experienced its fair share of problems, such as the Orange Revolution from November 2004 to January 2005 and the Euromaidan protests which lasted from November 2013 to mid-2014, and resulted in the Revolution of Dignity, in which the pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, was ousted, due to widespread opposition of his policy of moving away from working with the European Union, in favour of establishing a much closer relationship with the Russian Federation.

After Yanukovych was ousted, President Putin of Russia began planning for the annexation of Crimea— and this is where the Russo-Ukrainian war begins.

The Nazi slogan ‘Kinder, Küche, Kirche’, meaning Children, Kitchen, Church, summarises the Nazis ambitions towards women. They were expected to stay at home, like good housewives, and have many Children, because the Nazis wanted to build a strong aryan population to build their military.

During the period of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party took great steps to control Germany’s population of youths.

They aimed at developing youths who, in the long term, could become future leaders and enable them to achieve Volksgemeinschaft. Along with being obedient, idolising the Führer, being physically fit, sacrificing oneself for the national good and doing everything possible to strengthen the health and racial purity of the German nation, Boy were expected to be strong fighters and girls were taught to bear many children.

On the 30th January 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor by President Hindenburg. The Weimar Government was struggling at this time, with the two previous Chancellors; von Papen and von Schleicher both holding the position of Chancellor for very short stints. Leading up to this, since the collapse of Muller’s Social Democratic Party led Coalition, Chancellors were unable to sustain their rule for significant periods of time. This is because proportional representation meant that there were many parties with divergent interests in the Reichstag, so it was impossible to gain a majority and support for new laws. This highlighted the failure of Weimar democracy, with Hindenburg having to use Article 48 to pass almost every new law.

‘When America sneezes, Europe catches a cold.’, originally, at the time of Napoleon, this quote was “When Paris sneezes, Europe catches a cold”, but in the twentieth century, this is used to reflect on the dominating and massively influential role of America in terms of the global economy.

This quote is particularly accurate when looking at the Great Depression of 1929. As we all know, it was caused by the Wall Street Crash, where the American Stock Market lost its value. Countries that were hit the hardest by this were Great Britain, France and Germany especially.

During the rule of the Fascists, Mussolini used propaganda to brainwash Italian citizens to ensure support and increase his popularity.

He used various types of propaganda to achieve this. Examples include newspapers, posters, radio and cinema, sports and rallies, art, sculptures and exhibitions, literature, philosophy and culture.

On 8th July 1853, black ships arrived in the port of Edo (Tokyo).

The Japanese demanded the ships leave, resulting in the ships turning their guns on the city in a show of force.

The Japanese are forced into allowing them to dock, and Commodore Perry, an American naval officer, brings two letters; one from himself and one from President Fillmore.
