"The Carry-On Imperative: A Memoir of Travel, Reinvention & Giving Back" Please welcome Robin Pascoe to IMPACT!
ROBIN PASCOE is the author of five books about global living. At the age of sixty, after stepping back as the Expat Expert, Pascoe joined her husband and son to create a brand for their family’s wildly successful global education company, Maple Bear by establishing over 200 schools in Brazil and around the world, Now, she is helping with another family project, fighting climate change in rural Costa Rica at an environmental education not-for-profit founded by her daughter.
Robin says:
Giving credit to those that came before us is so important. We would'nt be who we are today without the work of those who came before us. Robin predicted the "train wreck" of social media 20 years ago. "When young people don't see the "eyes" of those they are hurting, this will be extremely damaging to society". It's about resilience....her experience of 'carrying on' despite an early childhood trauma of losing my mother...I credit it with finding role models of resilience, a subject I wrote about for Globe Amplify last month: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-amplify-why-seniors-should-share-their-stories-with-young-people/ It's about taking on a huge challenge with https://www.maplebear.ca in our 60s and building a global brand without anyone really knowing us and ploughing money from the success of it into the new venture of Finca Cantaros.... along with his good friend Dan White founder of the Geotrac Foundation, an NGO focused on expanding the worldview of young people through travel and cultural exchanges. Welcome back to IMPACT.
***********************************************************
Today we will talk about "The IMPACTs of War".
*************************************************************
Background:
First, Dan and Chip met on an exploratory mission to Ukraine in September, 2022. Their team was organized by PASS - a company based in Alexandria, Virginia in conjunction with THE CARPATHIAN FOUNDATION from Hungary.
Their first trip focused on refugees and IDPs (Internally displaced people) and those who struggle with disabilities.
Ukraine has a population of about 44 million people and roughly 14 million have been displaced, and about half of those were refugees at the time of their first visit (refugees are those who leave the country vs. those are are internally displaced). They visited refugee centers in Hungary, Budapest and Moldova and visited IDPs in Vinnytzia, Ukraine. Many of the IDPs were disabled prior to the war and several had settled at a rehabilitation center in Vinnytzia called OPEN HEARTS.
Their second journey was in May of this year and they entered Ukraine through Poland. This recent visit included Lviv, Chernihiv, Zhodamyr, and Kviv area with an emphasis on relationship building with community leaders, assisting in medical distribution and medical collaborations with US-based doctors, and documenting war crimes. They also revisited OPEN HEARTS initiative.
If you want to help Chip and Dan's initiative to help Special Needs refugees fleeing the war zone. Their web site is https://hopeacrossborders.org/
All donations are funneled through the US Ukraine Foundation a 501c3 and go directly to projects that help displaced Special Needs Ukrainians.

Did you know that dementia begins developing 20–30 years before any symptoms emerge ... with negative changes beginning in the brain in our 40s and 50s? At age 41, Cat learned that her genotype gives her a 92% chance of developing Alzheimer’s. With the threat of early onset Alzheimer’s looming, Cat made a series of changes that led her neurologist to ask (after her bloodwork came back): “I’ve never seen an improvement like this. Did you steal someone’s blood??!” Learn how she made her changes stick, how her new lifestyle has led to more entrepreneurial creativity ... and what you can do to have the healthiest brain now and for decades to come!
It’s a No Brainer: Protect Your Business by Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset.
A few years ago, Cat Hoke became passionate about brain health and preventing cognitive decline (especially Alzheimer’s). She give this extremely informative talk to share her personal journey after her doctor told her that, “Your lifestyle is burning your brain out!” She has since made remarkable reversals in her cognitive decline, and despite her current physical limitations, her brain remains sharp. Cat is a previous guest on IMPACT and we felt that her story is so compelling that we needed to share it without our IMPACT audience. So with Cat’s permission please enjoy, make notes and change your brain hearth.

Cat’s hope is that you’ll look into resources and go see your doctor if you feel compelled to do so. There is a prevalent myth that there’s nothing you can do about Alzheimer’s, and this simply isn’t true.
Part II: Dementia and Alzheimer’s
Dementia
Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a group of symptoms including memory loss and loss of cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases.Part III: Protecting and Nourishing Your Brain

Carlo (he/him) developed an awe of the natural world by flipping through the pages of National Geographic magazines. Pursuing this interest, education and wildlife field work took him to Australia’s Bass Strait, Utqiaġvik in the Arctic Circle, Mexico’s Selva Maya and points in between. Closer to home, he worked with local organizations conducting nature education and outreach. Always drawn to the ocean, he returns to Vancouver after studying seabirds on Pacific coast marine protected areas. Using his experience with research and science communication, he supports marine conservation as the Ocean Conservation Campaigner for CPAWS-BC. Carlo was raised in Burnaby, British Columbia, on ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓ q̓ əmin̓ əm̓ (Halq’eméylem) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) speaking peoples. The Great Bear Sea, also referred to as the Northern Shelf Bioregion, is found off the north and central coasts of BC next to the famous Great Bear Rainforest. Learn about the incredible and unique marine life that lives here. Hear about how coastal First Nations are leading the process with the Canadian and BC governments to create a marine protected area (MPAs) network for the region. Thanks to people like you advocating for strong ocean protection, we have a plan to build on the existing three MPAs here to create a whole network of protected areas to further support important habitats. These connected MPAs increase the resilience to impacts and protect the health of the Great Bear Sea for present and future generations. She holds a MSc in Geography from the University of Calgary and a BSc in Applied Animal Biology from the University of British Columbia. Chelsea currently works with Raincoast Conservation Foundation - a non-profit organization made up of a team of conservationists and scientists empowered by our research to protect the lands, waters, and wildlife of coastal British Columbia. Chelsea joined the Raincoast team in 2021 to help develop the Wolf Conservation Program and continues to coordinate and deliver the program’s various initiatives. Raincoast’s wolf initiatives are working toward implementation of provincial policy that respects the welfare of wolves and their ecological role. This includes putting an end to the killing of wolves in BC for the purposes of predator control, trophy, and perceived competition for shared prey. Raincoast is currently raising funds to stop commercial trophy hunting in more than a quarter of the Great Bear Rainforest in BC. Purchasing the Southern Great Bear Rainforest Tenure, which covers 18,239 km2, protects wolves and dozens of other species from being commercially trophy hunted because it gives Raincoast the exclusive rights to commercially guide trophy hunters. Raincoast currently controls the commercial hunting rights in five tenures, more than 38,000 km2 of the BC coast – an area larger than Vancouver Island or the entire country of Belgium. ● Safeguarding Coastal Carnivores in the Southern Great Bear Rainforest tenure: https://www.raincoast.org/trophy-hunt/ ● Take action to protect BC Wolves: https://www.raincoast.org/wolves/ Social platforms: ● Twitter: @chelgreer @raincoast ● Instagram: @raincoastconservation ● Website: www.raincoast.org ● Email: chelsea@raincoast.org

Thu, 29 Jul 2021 - 32min - 37 - IMPACT Podcast - Tod PellyDr. John Tod Pelly is a proud resident of the beautiful North Shore of Vancouver. He grew up attending Seymour Heights Elementary followed by Sentinel Secondary, where he graduated with the Class of 1996 as one of three class Valedictorians and holder of the BC Decathlon title. Tod continued on to take a track scholarship at Simon Fraser University, where he obtained All-American status three times. At SFU, Tod studied Kinesiology and took interest in becoming a physiotherapist. Growing up and pushing his body to its limits, he had found himself in a physio environment regularly due to a chronic hamstring problem. However, without getting the results he was hoping for, he decided to try a chiropractor – and he got amazing results. It turned out it wasn’t his hamstring after all; It was his pelvis putting too much pressure on his hamstring. Inspired by his results, Tod decided he wanted to pursue a Doctorate of Chiropractic, and packed his bags for California where he attended the Southern California University of Health Sciences, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2005. Tod also obtained a Post-Doctorate certification in the Gonstead System of Analysis and Technique and after practicing in San Diego, California from 2005-2006, he was thrilled to return to his hometown where he founded The Pelly Clinic in April 2007. Tod is passionate about giving back to communities around the world via Chiropractic. He has volunteered his services for The Ride to end AIDS, and has provided Chiropractic care on several missions to impoverished countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Thailand, Laos, and most recently, his mission “A Small Step” in Nepal. In October 2019, Tod was named 2019 Chiropractor of the Year for North America, awarded by The Master's Circle Global (TMCG). Dr. Pelly was humbled to be the recipient of this distinguished honour. Outside of the Pelly Clinic, Tod resides in North Vancouver with his wife Julie, son Reid and daughter Kasey. Tod enjoys spending time with family at his cabin at Sakinaw Lake, water skiing, running, hiking, cheering on the Canucks and hitting the slopes on the mountains of the north shore and Whistler. Tod is also an avid soccer player, proudly playing for the NVFC from childhood into his adult years and now coaching his son Reid's team, the NVFC Rangers, as well as his daughter Kasey's team, the NSGSC Wildcats.Thu, 22 Jul 2021 - 44min

PAVE THE ROAD, is her current project which gives a voice to an underrepresented community in rural Costa Rica where thousands of children are becoming chronicaly ill, due to silica laden road dust, consistently drifting into their open air schools. The film drives attention to illegal landfills in Central America, and a universal, environmental solution, which is plastic roads to be paved in front of the schools. Kelly establishes legislation in Central America by influencing government to create a circular economy to mandate the use of plastic waste in road construction for all projects. The law (9298) was passed on June 21, 2020. Kelly is currently taking the plastic road idea worldwide to film festivals, streaming networks, social media groups and industry leaders, to help rectify the plastic pollution that has quadrupled since COVID.
