In May 1883, The Oxford Magazine published a ghost story by the celebrated Victorian novelist Rhoda Broughton entitled “A Night in a Manor House.” For more than 140 years, this extraordinary little tale appears to have remained largely forgotten, overlooked by generations of readers and absent from the collections of Broughton’s supernatural fiction. What began as a search for obscure Victorian ghost stories developed into a fascinating piece of literary detective work. With invaluable academic assistance, I investigated the story’s publication history and learned more about this remarkable and elusive work. In this special edition of Haunted Tales of Darkness, I introduce the discovery, read “A Night in a Manor House” in full, and afterwards examine the evidence surrounding its long disappearance from view. It is precisely stories such as this that Haunted Tales of Darkness seeks to recover forgotten works of supernatural literature, lost to history and deserving to be heard again.

The Order of Nine Angles (O9A) is a secretive, decentralized extremist movement that combines occult and Satanic beliefs with neo-Nazi and accelerationist ideology. Rather than operating like a traditional organization, it has historically relied on small groups called “nexions” and a large online presence. Today, O9A-related activity continues primarily through online networks, propaganda, recruitment and extremist communities. Authorities and researchers have also continued to investigate individuals and splinter groups associated with O9A ideology. In 2025, New Zealand designated O9A as a terrorist entity, and 2026 reporting has documented continuing activity involving O9A-linked networks and alleged criminal cases. The organization remains difficult to track because of its decentralized structure and the fact that much of its activity occurs online.

In Part 3 of the Black Dahlia deep dive, Heather finishes the forensic analysis of her original 2019 psychic reading and follows several unexpected threads that emerged during the research. This episode digs into Elizabeth Short’s Hollywood circle, including Anne Toth, Mark Hansen, Maurice Clement, Dr. Patrick O’Reilly, and the explosive Brenda Allen scandal that exposed corruption inside the LAPD. As those connections begin overlapping, the reading starts looking less like a story about one mysterious killer and more like a glimpse into the complicated social world surrounding Elizabeth before her death. Heather also confronts the parts of the original reading that simply don’t hold up, separates possible psychic hits from information that may have been influenced by existing Black Dahlia mythology, and explores one of the strangest recurring patterns: a younger man Elizabeth trusted, another woman, and the possibility that more than one person was involved in her death. Finally, Heather conducts a new tarot reading in 2026, six years after the original. Despite approaching the case with years of distance and new historical information, several of the same themes appear again: a trusted romantic connection, multiple people, a woman who may have played a significant role, and the persistent sense that the person responsible for Elizabeth’s death may not have been the same person responsible for what happened to her body afterward. Seven years after the first reading, the Black Dahlia case somehow leaves us with even more questions than when we started.

In March 1987, Traverse City DJ Steve Cook sat down with a $99 keyboard and invented a monster for an April Fools' bit — a seven-foot dog-headed creature stalking Northern Michigan on a ten-year cycle. He made up the year. He made up the sightings. He'd never heard the words "Dogman" before that afternoon. Then the phones started ringing. Not with laughter — with confessions. Listeners who'd kept a story secret for years, even decades, suddenly had permission to say it out loud. Within a week, Cook's joke was the most-requested song on the station. Within years, he'd logged over 500 separate eyewitness reports. But here's the part that should bother you: Cook's fictional 1887 origin date lines up with a real, pre-existing lumberjack account from Wexford County. A 1930s encounter from a man named Robert Fortney describes the creature making direct, deliberate eye contact — decades before Cook's song existed to plant that idea. And the "years ending in seven" cycle Cook wrote as a catchy lyric has kept landing on schedule: 1987, 1997, 2007 (the year the notorious hoaxed "Gable Film" surfaced), 2017 — with 2027 next on the clock. Tonight, we trace the joke that grew teeth: how a fabrication that predates any research somehow backed into details that were already sitting in the regional memory, and what it means that the man who made it all up still, to this day, says he believes the people who called him.

An old English church, newly uncovered medieval paintings and an apparently insignificant piece of damaged plaster lead to something far older and more sinister in Arnold Smith's remarkable antiquarian ghost story, The Face in the Fresco. First published in the London Mercury in June 1928, the story has since largely disappeared from popular memory. Yet its combination of ecclesiastical history, antiquarian investigation and steadily mounting supernatural menace places it firmly within the tradition associated with the great English ghost-story writers of the period. The Face in the Fresco is exactly the kind of neglected supernatural tale I particularly enjoy bringing back to an audience: a story once published and read, but which has subsequently slipped into the shadows. From the phantom monks of haunted "monk's castle" to the "other" woman in white of haunted Archer Avenue, let's meet the ghosts of haunted St. James Sag on today's episode of The Ghostlorist as we turn a legendary paranormal page in the book of haunted places.

In this illustrated guide, Jennifer Lamonica reveals the sacred tradition of face morphology, an esoteric system that has been passed quietly from rabbi to student as an unbroken oral tradition for more than 4,500 years. She explores the history and development of this ancient art from its origins in Israel and Egypt to its use as the major diagnostic system in Europe until the Enlightenment and its current applications in French medical schools. It was a warm and sunny day in the summer of 1978 when Ernest, a kind man with a soft spot for kittens, had an unforgettable experience that would alter his life forever. He and his wife lived in a charming apartment on Parliament Street in the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Toronto, where they were currently caring for a litter of energetic felines. One day, one of the kittens disappeared, prompting Ernest to search for it around their home. As he combed the area, he stumbled upon a dark opening that seemed to lead into a cave. Despite only having a small flashlight with him, Ernest mustered up his courage and ventured about 10 feet inside. "Chris was born in 1967, the son of Patricia Fleming and Chicago Blackhawks’ hockey legend Reggie Fleming. Though he traveled extensively with his parents and sister during his father’s active years playing hockey, Chris spent most of his childhood in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. As early as he can remember, Chris Fleming was prone to experiencing extraordinary encounters in the form of ghosts and unexplained phenomena, from dark shadowy forms coming out of closets and dim corners, to glowing ghosts manifesting above grade school friends during sleepovers. As these experiences increased, Chris–fearfully at first–began studying the ghosts as they moved around the house and even interacted with him. Soon he grew aware of how they used telepathy to hear his thoughts, and even project themselves from one side of the room to another almost instantly. He also learned quickly that his fears were never hidden from them. After several years of encounters, Chris befriended a spirit who introduced himself as Henry. This spirit would warn Chris about other ghosts and entities, as well as tell him things about the spirit world and universe. Chris conversed with Henry on the Ouija board from 1975-1979 before Henry moved on, but one particular conversation stands out in Chris’s memory to this day: One afternoon Chris, who had recently seen the movie Close Encounters, asked Henry if there is life elsewhere in our solar system. Henry answered “Europa,” and when Chris asked what type of life is on Europa, the spirit responded, “Plant and bacteria.” Twenty years later, Chris was folding laundry and listening to CNN in the background when he heard something in the broadcast that caught his attention: a reporter was announcing that scientists now believe there may be plant or bacteria life on the sixth moon of Jupiter, a moon called Europa."
