As an undergraduate, Brian won a fellowship with the prestigious Sundance Ford Foundation with one of his feature-length scripts. He has worked on several short films including Tsídii Nááts’íílid – Rainbow Bird and A Conversation on Race with Native Americans for the short documentary series produced by the New York Times. He was a participant of the 6th Annual Native American TV Writer’s Lab with the Native American Media Alliance, where he learned to write Television Scripts.

About Larry Yazzie

Larry Yazzie is the Founder and Artistic Director of Native Pride Productions which is based in Jacksonville, FL. He is a two-time World Champion Fancy Dancer, Men’s Northern Traditional dancer, and Eagle Dancer. Larry grew up on the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama, Iowa where he learned the traditional ways of his ancestors.

He founded Native Pride Productions to give back to his community and to the world. His repertoire includes performances at the Olympics, The Kennedy Center, and the Smithsonian Institute.

As an international lecturer, dancer, and educator, Larry also plays the flute and hand drum and he sings as part of his repertoire. He has earned the reputation for being one of the nation’s leading experts on Native American dance and has received many accolades and awards that celebrate his work.

As a solo singer, eagle dancer and men’s fancy dancer, Larry has performed around the world including in Japan, Australia, France, Ireland, Brazil, Guatemala, Republic of Moldova, and the Kingdom of Jordan. His captivating energy and enthusiasm inspires others.

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview two incredible authors on the Powwows podcast. Kim Rogers and Laurel Goodluck are native writers specializing in children's books that share their tribe's history and stories. As many of you know, I had the opportunity to attend the Taylor Swift concert in the city, but that was just the beginning of our amazing journey. Join me as I share the highlights of our trip and some of the fascinating native history and culture we discovered along the way.

1️⃣ Exploring Beyond the Main Attraction: When traveling, it's always exciting to venture outside the main purpose of your trip and discover hidden gems. In our case, we were able to explore Mirror Woods and Alcatraz, uncovering the rich native history and breathtaking landscapes that these sites had to offer.

2️⃣ Preservation of Native History: During our visit to Mirror Woods, a national park managed by the National Park Service, we learned about the Coast Miwok tribe and their connection to the redwood forests. The Park Service is actively working to highlight and preserve the native history of the area, making it a truly educational and immersive experience.

3️⃣ Alcatraz: Beyond the Notorious Prison: While Alcatraz is famously known as a former penitentiary, few are aware of its significance as a spiritual and meeting place for indigenous tribes, including the Miwoks. We also visited the new exhibit on the Native American occupation of the island by protestors.

The Gathering of Nations (GON) is a three-day event: April 27-29, 203 (Thursday – Saturday).

The Miss Indian World Talent Presentations is held at the Kiva Auditorium located at the Albuquerque Convention Center (Downtown Albuquerque) and kicks off Thursday evening; where young Native American Women represent their Native American and Indigenous people as cultural goodwill ambassadors. A Young Native American Woman will be crowned Miss Indian World, Saturday, April 27th after the Evening Grand Entry in Tingley Coliseum/EXPO NM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow itself is a two-day event (Friday & Saturday, April 26th and 27th, 2019) where the GON experience is for all people (Indian and Non-Indian) to see colorful Native American Pow Wow dancing, to hear the songs and become enlightened with emotional happiness! This will take place inside Tingley Coliseum and the other activities will be on the Powwow Grounds at Expo NM (NM State fairgrounds).

The Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe has major impact on Indian Country.

In addition, there are cases on the court's docket that could fundamentally change policies and laws such as the Indian Child Welfare Act, Indian Gaming, and more.

On this week's episode I speak with Rebecca Nagle, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Rebecca hosts This Land podcast and has been following the impact of the court on Indian policies.

From drum-maker to the lead singer of the Midnite Express Singers, Robin Opichee Day-Bedeau has been singing throughout Turtle Island for more than 30 years. So, it's fair to say Opie Day is pretty much a household name in Indian Country. Born to his late father Joseph John Bedeau from Onigum by way of the Leech Lake Ojibwe Indian Reservation and his mother Charlene Anne Day from the Bois Forte Ojibwe Reservation, Opie is Anishinaabe—one of the people in Ojibwe—through and through. A member of the fish clan, his passion is singing—both powwow and round dance.

Fawn Wood’s singing reflects her Cree and Salish tribal lineage. At an early age Fawn would sing her heart out at pow-wows alongside her mother and father. In 2006, Fawn was the first female to win the Hand Drum contest at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow. In 2009 she opened the show at the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards (NAMMYS). Dallas Waskahat is a singer, drummer and educator who works to empower, strengthen and maintain Indigenous culture through the power of his voice, music and leadership.

In her debut picture book, professional Indigenous dancer Ria Thundercloud tells the true story of her path to dance and how it helped her take pride in her Native American heritage. At four years old, Ria Thundercloud was brought into the powwow circle, ready to dance in the special jingle dress her mother made for her. As she grew up, she danced with her brothers all over Indian country. Then Ria learned more styles–tap, jazz, ballet–but still loved the expressiveness of Indigenous dance. And despite feeling different as one of the only Native American kids in her school, she always knew she could turn to dance to cheer herself up.       Follow along as Ria shares her dance journey–from dreaming of her future to performing as a professional–accompanied by striking illustrations that depict it while bringing her graceful movements to life.

Finally, I was able to attend my first Pow Wow in 2 years.  I just landed from my weekend at the Morongo Pow Wow in California.  Being back was amazing.  I loved seeing old friends, catching up with everyone, and hearing the drum again.  

With my trip, I have been reflecting on some of my best memories of Pow Wows, and I wanted to share them with you. I've been blessed, thanks to you, to have great experiences.

Now that summer is winding down, it's time to pass that beach book along to a friend and pick up something with more substance. If you’re eyeing something more informative, thrilling, and poignant, then “Winter Counts” needs to be added to your “must-read” list ASAP.

Here is a brief summary of the award-winning book. 

“Virgil Wounded Horse is the local enforcer on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  When justice is denied by the American legal system or the tribal council, Virgil is hired to deliver his own punishment, the kind that’s hard to forget. But when heroin makes its way into the reservation and finds Virgil’s own nephew, his vigilantism suddenly becomes personal. He enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend and sets out to learn where the drugs are coming from, and make them stop.

They follow a lead to Denver and find that drug cartels are rapidly expanding and forming new and terrifying alliances.  And back on the reservation, a new tribal council initiative raises uncomfortable questions about money and power. As Virgil starts to link the pieces together, he must face his own demons and reclaim his Native identity. He realizes that being a Native American in the 21st century comes at an incredible cost.

Norma Baker Flying Horse is Hidatsa, Dakota Sioux, and Assiniboine. She is known for her Native American fashion designs. Norma's fashion work has grown from Pow Wow outfits to designing fashion for award shows like the Grammys and Oscars. Her dresses were recently featured in a Paris fashion show.

Tonia Jo Hall grew up on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. She started dancing as a tiny tot. At 18 she began traveling outside her reservation to larger Pow Wows. She is now a champion Jingle Dress dancer. Recently she began a career in stand up comedy known for her character Auntie Beachress.

Interview with Larry Yazzie Larry is an actor, two-time World Champion Fancy Dancer, an Eagle Dancer, and is from the Meskwaki Nation in Tama, Iowa. He is the Founder and Artistic Director for Native Pride Productions, Inc. which is based in St. Paul, MN. His repertoire includes performances at the Olympics, The Kennedy Center, and the Smithsonian Institute. Larry has performed all over the world and has won many awards for his dancing. As an international lecturer, dancer, and educator, Larry has earned the reputation for being one of the nation's leading experts on Native American dance. In May 2010, he and his son Jessup were the sole U.S. performers invited for performances and workshops throughout northern France. He founded Native Pride Productions to give back to his community and to the world.

Or if a person doesn’t own mocs, can’t wear mocs, or perhaps their Tribe didn’t wear mocs, they may wear a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon instead. Even easier, the event takes place where you are, where you’re going and where you live. Rock Your Mocs if a fun way to unify Native American, Aboriginal, First Nations, Alaskan Native, Indigenous Peoples globally through internet social media, participants post their photos for everyone to enjoy, sharing their stories and creating an “online photo album” by using any one or all of the following hastags: #RYM2016 #ROCKYOURMOCS. It’s like a great big fun moccasin party that everyone gets to see pictures of! RYM was founded by Jessica “Jaylyn” Atsye of Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico U.S.A. and she has partnered with Emergence Productions, a Native American owned Event Production Company, who together are working hard to expand this cultural empowerment initiative worldwide!

Around the world, people have taken the initiative to organize - Moccasin making workshops - Round dances - Community “Fun” walk/run’s - Group photos - Native American and Indigenous cultural awareness events - Connecting youth and elder events - Museums have created moccasin or Rock Your Mocs exhibitions

Darren Thompson is a renowned Native American musician and contributor to PowWows.com!

Darren Thompson is an educator, public speaker, facilitator, and Native American flute player from the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Indian Reservation in Northern Wisconsin.  He has spent most of his adult life serving communities through leadership development, American Indian cultural awareness workshops, and the arts.

His career as an American Indian musician began with a burning curiosity of a nearly lost instrument – the Native American flute – while an undergraduate at Marquette University. Within a short time he became a sought-after concert musician who shared both traditional American Indian flute songs as well as his original compositions at colleges and universities throughout the United States. He has shared the stage with many award-winning musicians, artists, and talents giving him the inspiration to thrive as an artist.

His dedication to the preservation of American Indian music has taken him to some of North America’s most prominent American Indian organizations and events, including the Grand Opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the National Indian Education Association, the National Congress of American Indians, the North American Indigenous Games, America’s largest American Indian cultural festival, many universities, organizations, communities, and has recently began to share his talents internationally.

In 2009 Darren released his debut album, “The Song of Flower: Native American Songs from Ojibwe Country,” with Bear Tracks Digital Media, an American Indian owned production label. “The Song of Flower” was highly supported by well-known political prisoner and activist Leonard Peltier and Darren was invited to share his music all over the United States promoting for Peltier’s freedom and performing at his art galleries. He hosts an annual Native American flute retreat in his community, the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Reservation, with select flutemakers and renowned fluteplayers teaching eager learners about the instrument from all over the world.

In 2015, Darren released his second album “Between Earth and Sky: Native American Flute Music Recorded in the Black Hills,” with Drumhop Productions, an American Indian production label well-known in Indian Country that produces the annual Gathering of Nations Powwow CD and many others from throughout Turtle Island. Early in its release, Between Earth and Sky has received acclaim from media and professionals supporting the album’s intent – to preserve history. From the album’s success, Darren was awarded an artist-in-residence opportunity with the world’s largest monument, the Crazy Horse National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

As a result of his successful residence at Crazy Horse Memorial, Darren was selected to be a regular performer in the summer months at Crazy Horse giving him the opportunity to continue to share his music with hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.
