Jerry from Rebel’s Dark Tales of Appalachia YouTube channel, as well as Chris from Sasquatch Recon, are here to share some amazing stories from not only the South Mountains here in North Carolina, but also from South Carolina.In this episode, we dive into a series of strange and unexplained encounters that stretch across generations and landscapes, from the rugged woods of the South Mountains to the dark swamps of South Carolina.

Jerry opens the conversation with chilling accounts rooted in local history, focusing on stories passed down by old-timers that challenge the often-repeated belief that Sasquatch activity in the area only began gaining attention in the late 1970s. One of the most gripping stories comes from Jerry’s late friend Smitty, who recalled a terrifying 1971 squirrel hunting trip in Cleveland County after returning home from Vietnam.

What began as a routine day in the woods with his uncle turned into something far more unsettling when they spotted a massive, hair-covered creature and later found themselves confronted and chased out by an aggressive seven-foot “hairy booger” that screamed, bared its teeth, and made it clear they were no longer welcome there.Jerry also shares several more recent encounters that suggest whatever has been seen in those mountains may still be there. He recounts a 2018 experience involving Uncle Jeff and his nephew Jake, who heard heavy bipedal footsteps in the dark, followed by guttural vocalizations, violent tree shaking, and a brief but disturbing glimpse of a hairy chest and mouth.

He then describes a 2022 roadside sighting reported by an elderly couple who claimed to see a creature with glowing red eyes, along with a string of rock-throwing incidents involving a deer hunter, night hikers, a Jeep, and a pair of creek walkers named Ray and Vera. These encounters are paired with eerie whoops, growling howls, and the kind of escalating behavior that leaves little doubt something unusual was happening in those woods.

Chris then shifts the conversation into the swamps of South Carolina, where an expedition took a frightening turn after his wood knocks and yells were answered by an unbelievably loud scream from deep in the distance. The sheer power of the sound, combined with the isolation of the swamp, was enough to make the group retreat. It is a tense and atmospheric ending to an episode packed with terrifying firsthand stories, regional lore, and the kind of encounters that continue to fuel the mystery of what may still be hiding in the forests of the South.

The documentary aired on a Tuesday night in October, and nothing was ever the same. Within hours it was trending worldwide. Scientists came forward. Former government employees reached out. And across the country, people started paying closer attention to the forests around them.This episode brings the first volume of Born Wild to a close — but not before we hear from some of the most compelling voices in the archives. Russell Crawford, a Tennessee hunter with over fifty years in the Cherokee National Forest, describes the morning he had a clear shot at something massive and chose not to take it. 

Not because he couldn't — but because pulling that trigger would have felt like murder.Margaret White spent thirty years teaching biology in rural Washington and debunking every Sasquatch story her students brought to class. Then she came face to face with one on a trail in Olympic National Park, and every rational explanation she ever had turned to dust.

James Whitehorse carried his story for fifty-four years. He was eight years old, herding sheep near the Chuska Mountains on the Navajo reservation, when a towering figure stepped out of the junipers and raised its hand in greeting. His grandfather told him the white world would never understand. James kept quiet — until now. Maria Santos worked the graveyard shift at a gas station on the edge of the Gila Wilderness. 

One night at two in the morning, something eight feet tall walked up to the pumps and started examining them like a curious child discovering something new.Thomas Erikson came from four generations of Oregon loggers. They called them the Wood Apes, and every logger in the Pacific Northwest knew about them. Thomas shares three encounters spanning decades — including the day one of them spoke to him and pointed at the trees, at him, and at itself. Like it was saying they were all part of the same thing. Thomas passed away six months after this interview.

We hear from Eddie McGraw, a long-haul trucker who watched a creature stroll across a Montana rest area at two in the morning like it owned the place. From David Baker, a National Geographic photographer who captured three frames of the clearest Sasquatch image ever taken — then locked them in a safe for fifteen years. From Patricia Morgan, a Yellowstone ranger who reveals a secret file of sightings passed down from ranger to ranger since the 1950s. 

And from Dr. Michael Brooks, a primatologist who spent fifteen years hiding evidence that would have validated everything. Then comes the revelation no one expected. Brian's own mother, Jean Patterson, finally shares a secret she kept for decades — she saw one of the creatures on the Lyerly property a full year before Brian ever did. Fred shares two unsettling accounts of “Hairy Man” encounters reported from remote parts of Alaska. First, we hear from Nathaniel and Theresa, a married couple in their seventies who spent years homesteading in the Alaskan wilderness. What began as strange disturbances around their property gradually turned into something far more disturbing.

They experienced missing items, uprooted tree stumps, and terrifying screams in the early morning hours before a Native man finally gave them a name for what he believed was responsible: the “Hairy Man.” Theresa later saw a tall, humanlike figure with no visible neck near their chicken coop. After shots were fired, half of their chickens were found dead.

Months later, Nathaniel encountered a brownish-gray figure moving near their burn pit. Not long after, something struck their cabin, revealed itself at close range, and was shot at. In the days that followed, the couple heard distant howls and eerie call-and-response screams echoing through the area. A neighbor eventually fired shots to run it off, and the activity stopped for years.

Fred then shares Jacob’s story from a coastal village in Alaska.

 While out snowmachining with his cousin to gather firewood, the two men spotted what Jacob estimated to be a ten-foot-tall figure. They heard a powerful whoop, then later found themselves in a tense exchange of gunfire after the creature appeared to lift a log. When they returned, they discovered the cousin’s snowmachine had been destroyed and dragged into the trees.

In this episode, Brian shares an email from a military veteran who served multiple combat tours in Afghanistan and wants the world to hear a story that's been buried for three decades. Matt, as he asks to be called, writes in about a confession made to him by a fellow soldier he calls Joe during a night of drinking while the two were stateside between deployments. Joe revealed that in the mid nineteen nineties, long before the war on terror, he was part of a small specialized team dispatched into an unnamed national park after two hikers went missing.

The male hiker's body was found twenty five feet up in a tree with his neck broken. The female hiker was never found. What search teams did find were massive humanoid footprints ranging from sixteen inches to nearly twenty three inches long pressed deep into the soil along a remote creek drainage. Joe's team was briefed by an unnamed civilian and given a single objective: locate and eliminate the creatures responsible.

What followed was a harrowing two day hunt through old growth forest that culminated in the killing of four creatures, including a female, a juvenile estimated at around five feet tall, and a massive adult male standing over eight feet tall that charged the team and injured two soldiers before being brought down. Within hours of the kills, an unmarked black helicopter arrived carrying a civilian recovery team that bagged the bodies and flew them out to an unknown location. The soldiers were debriefed, told the mission never happened, and ordered to never speak of it again. Matt believes every word Joe told him that night, and he wants you to hear it.

In this episode, Brian sits down with makeup and special-effects artist, filmmaker, and longtime Patterson–Gimlin film researcher Bill Munns for a deep discussion about the enduring controversy surrounding the PGF. Drawing on decades of study and an archive of numerous scanned film copies, Munns explains how he works to separate authentic image details from artifacts introduced through duplication and degradation over time.

Munns shares that one of the key details that first compelled him to take the film seriously was the smooth continuity visible along the figure’s back and neck, something he argues would have been extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with 1967-era suit technology. That observation became the starting point for his long-running technical analysis of the footage.The conversation also explores the documentary Capturing Bigfoot and the heavily debated approximately 40 second clip that appears to recreate action associated with the Patterson–Gimlin film. After personally examining the physical film, Munns says he identified it as a Kodachrome II camera original bearing a 1966 manufacture date code and believes it was likely shot on a Kodak K-100.

At the same time, he emphasizes that a date code alone does not establish when the footage was actually filmed.Based on his analysis, Munns concludes that the clip is best understood as an after-the-fact replica rather than a pre-PGF rehearsal. He points to specific visual details, including what he describes as unnaturally white feet, as evidence supporting that conclusion.

Rather than asking audiences to accept one interpretation outright, he encourages careful, critical comparison of both possibilities and argues that the most important question is not chain of custody, but how the footage itself compares to the original PGF.Munns also discusses his belief that separate “ape suit” footage may have existed, which could help explain long-circulating stories about a burned suit without necessarily proving that the Patterson–Gimlin film itself was a hoax. He closes by revealing that he is currently writing a follow-up book that will further address the controversy and expand on his findings.

It's been a while since I've written a newsletter entry, but something happened on March 12, 2026 that demanded a response. A new documentary called Capturing Bigfoot, directed by Marq Evans, premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, and the shockwaves have been reverberating through the Bigfoot community ever since.

The film presents newly discovered sixteen-millimeter Kodachrome footage allegedly shot in 1966, a full year before the famous Patterson-Gimlin Film was recorded at Bluff Creek, California. According to the documentary, Clint Patterson, the youngest son of Roger Patterson, has gone on camera to reveal what he says is the truth about the most famous piece of Bigfoot footage ever captured.

The claims are significant, the evidence appears to be serious, and the community is divided in ways it hasn't been in decades.In this special episode, I read the latest edition of my free newsletter in its entirety, walking listeners through everything that's been reported about the documentary, the newly discovered footage, and the firestorm of reaction that has followed.

I share details from my own direct conversations with key figures in the Bigfoot research community, including Emmy-winning filmmaker and MonsterQuest creator Doug Hajicek, who offers a compelling alternative interpretation of the footage, and Bill Munns, widely regarded as the leading authority on the Patterson-Gimlin Film, who has physically examined the so-called smoking gun clip and reached a very different conclusion than the one the documentary is selling. I also discuss Eric Palacios's reaction after attending a screening of the film, my outreach to director Marq Evans for a potential interview and advance screening, and my ongoing efforts to secure a statement from Bob Gimlin himself. Most importantly, I make the case I've been making for years — one that matters now more than ever. 

The Patterson-Gimlin Film can be fake and Sasquatch can still be real. Drawing on nearly forty years of personal research, sixteen years of law enforcement experience, my own encounters including a sighting from approximately ten feet away in Washington State in 2024 while filming the My Bigfoot Life documentary, and hundreds of conversations with credible eyewitnesses from across the continent, I argue that the Sasquatch phenomenon has never depended on a single piece of film and never should have.

The first goes back about twenty years, when longtime partners Brian, a licensed pilot, and Casey, who owned a Piper Cub, flew into the Chugach Range to check their winter trap lines. What started as a routine trip quickly turned unsettling when they spotted a fast-moving, humanlike figure in the wilderness. As they continued, they found traps sprung, missing, or disturbed in ways that made no sense. The unease only deepened when they came across foul-smelling hair and began hearing repeated screams and the sound of something large moving through the area. Both men were overcome by the terrifying sense that they were being watched—and worse, intensely hated. After firing shots and making a desperate retreat toward the plane, Brian became physically sick as an even larger creature seemed to move in on them.

They managed to escape by air, but not before realizing later that the creature had taken Brian’s snowshoe. The experience left such a deep mark that it strained their friendship for years, until they recently reconnected and finally spoke about what happened.

Fred’s second story follows Chad, a cyclist traveling north of Trapper Creek, whose night in the wild took a disturbing turn. He discovered that his hammock strap had been ripped loose and that some of his gear had been moved into a tree, as though something had been deliberately toying with him.

Things escalated when he encountered a dark-faced figure that let out a scream so powerful and unnatural it sent him fleeing. In a chilling twist, another cyclist miles away also heard the scream and decided to get out of the area as well.

Brian welcomes Joey from Maryland, whose connection to the episode begins with a heartfelt voicemail about Bigfoot Country. Joey shares how deeply he related to the book’s themes of childhood, solitude, and finding refuge in the woods, explaining that his own upbringing followed a similar path.

That conversation opens the door to one of Joey’s earliest and most unforgettable encounters. As a child in the mid-to-late 1980s, he was near a local creek when he spotted something extraordinary: a tiny white creature, roughly two feet tall, descending a tree. He describes it as chimp-like, juvenile in appearance, and unlike anything he had ever seen before. The moment became even more unsettling when the creature locked eyes with him, then vanished as it moved around the trunk.

Years later, after developing a deeper interest in Bigfoot, Joey began experiencing other strange events in the same general area. After playing the Sierra Sounds near the creek, his dogs later refused to leave the porch while he heard eerie, chimp-like vocal responses coming from the darkness. About a week later, the activity escalated when loud, forceful tree knocks erupted near his home, sounding like a bat striking wood. Even his highly trained protection dogs were visibly shaken. Each time Joey tried to record the sounds, they stopped, only to begin again farther away.

Joey also reflects on other unsettling experiences over the years, including being seemingly followed by dueling owls near the Potomac and, more recently in 2025, spotting an unusually large canine crossing the road. Throughout the conversation, Brian explores the rarity of juvenile, chimp-like Sasquatch descriptions and offers thoughtful caution about using the Sierra Sounds in the field.

 He shares experiences of his own involving multiple unexplained phenomena and suggests that these moments may heighten awareness rather than “mark” a person in any permanent way.

He also points to dogs’ behavior as one of the most telling indicators that something unusual may be happening nearby.

Part Nine brings Bigfoot Country to its climax, and it does so by circling back to where every great investigation begins — with the people who lived it.After years of building this platform, the floodgates finally opened. Witnesses who had been listening from the shadows for months, sometimes years, started stepping forward. People like Patricia Ann Holloway, a seventy-one-year-old retired librarian from Pennsylvania who had carried a secret since 1973 — the summer she was nineteen years old and working at a Baptist church camp in the Allegheny National Forest.

What she saw standing at the tree line that night, seven feet tall with eyes reflecting her flashlight beam, changed her forever. She kept quiet for nearly fifty years. When the only other witness — a twelve-year-old camper named Susan — passed away from cancer, Patricia decided she wasn't going to take that secret to her grave too.Her story opened the door for dozens more. In this episode, Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube channel returns to share two chilling accounts of encounters with a massive, humanlike creature deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Both stories come from individuals who found themselves face-to-face with something they could neither explain nor forget.

The first encounter comes from a man we’ll call Ben, a doctor flying a Piper Super Cub through the remote country near Hell Bent Creek above the Yukon River with his ten-year-old son. After landing near a quiet pond to stretch their legs and eat lunch, Ben notices his son repeatedly staring across the water at what the boy believes is a man standing in the distance. At first Ben assumes it’s a trick of the light or a distant hunter, but as they prepare to leave he finally sees it for himself. A large, dark figure rises upright near the pond and begins moving slowly along the shoreline.

As Ben starts warming up the plane for departure, the creature suddenly appears much closer, squatting roughly forty-five feet from the wing and silently watching the boy. Realizing the situation may be dangerous, Ben readies a shotgun while getting the aircraft airborne.

As they circle back for a final pass, he sees the figure return to the pond where his son had been standing, lowering its head as if sniffing the ground.The second account comes from a young woman named Shiloh, who was berry picking with her cousin outside a small unnamed village in rural Alaska. 

While gathering berries on the tundra, the girls notice a towering figure standing among the brush. Shiloh later described the creature as being nearly nine feet tall and strangely mesmerizing, as if it were somehow pulling her attention toward it. Her cousin sensed something was wrong and snapped her out of the strange trance-like state before they ran back to the village. Later that day several relatives armed themselves and followed the enormous tracks left behind.

Not far from where the girls had been picking berries, they spotted the same towering figure swaying in the brush. When the men approached, the creature suddenly charged. Warning shots rang out, and the massive figure stumbled before dropping onto all fours and disappearing into the tundra. Weeks later, the village smokehouse was discovered knocked over with salmon missing.

When one of the men tracked the disturbance, he reportedly saw the same creature moving away through the brush carrying long strips of dried salmon in its arms.

Brian welcomes Tim from Macon County, North Carolina, whose interest in Bigfoot began in an unexpected way. Years ago, he and a friend decided to prank the friend’s sons by creating fake tracks in the woods, a harmless hoax meant to stir up a little excitement. But not long after, the joke seemed to take on a life of its own.

Beginning in 2008, Tim says unexplained activity started occurring on the property—events that made him question whether something real might be moving through those woods. What followed were a series of strange and unsettling incidents. 

Tim recalls a raccoon being violently killed while a deep roar and whistling sounds echoed through the area. He also describes rocks and sticks being thrown, piercing screams from the darkness, and repeated disturbances around the trails, deer stands, and feeders scattered throughout the property. Over time, these experiences escalated from mysterious noises to what Tim believes were direct encounters. 

One involved a creature he photographed alongside researcher Dwight Campbell. Another encounter occurred while Tim was bow hunting, when he says a large figure appeared within roughly twenty feet of him. In a separate experience in Cades Cove, he observed something during the daytime using thermal equipment. More recently, in 2022, Tim describes seeing a creature on the ground that crawled away from the area rather than standing upright. Tim also recounts a trip following the South Carolina Bigfoot Festival, when his group returned to a location where bluff-charge vocalizations had previously been reported. 

The area had already generated stories from other witnesses, including reports of glowing eyes and even claims of a dogman-like creature moving through the woods.Despite skepticism from some people in his life, Tim remains focused on documenting what he believes is genuine activity. One of the moments that left the strongest impression on him involved hearing what sounded like two creatures communicating back and forth, an experience that reinforced his belief that these beings possess intelligence and complex behavior.

Today, Tim continues researching and sharing his experiences while encouraging others to approach the subject with curiosity and an open mind. He also promotes his work with Sasquatch Recon, North Carolina Investigates, and his online channels, where he documents ongoing field efforts and discussions surrounding the mystery.

In this episode, Fred takes us beyond simple encounter stories and into the foundation of how knowledge is preserved in his culture. He explains the vital role oral tradition plays in passing down history, survival skills, and encounters with what many in his community know as the Hairy Man. Written documentation is rare. 

He points out that “Story Knife” remains one of the few works that even attempts to capture fragments of that tradition in print. For generations, stories were not recorded in books—they were carried in memory, tied to landmarks, seasons, and lived experience. Fred also reflects on navigation, describing how descriptive mapping and deep familiarity with terrain once guided people across vast, unforgiving landscapes long before GPS existed. In his view, those skills are not outdated relics—they still matter. The conversation then shifts to a chilling account Fred heard in 2004 from a man named Jerry in Togiak. Jerry described a winter hunting trip west of Non Dalton that took a terrifying turn. 

During the hunt, a scream erupted across the tundra so intense that it scattered nearby wolves. What followed was even more disturbing. A Hairy Man reportedly struck a caribou with a single backhand blow to the ribs, dropping it. Jerry and his companions salvaged and packed the meat, trying to focus on the task at hand, but the encounter was far from over. The creature returned, and in an overwhelming display of strength and dominance, it threw their packed quarters over a ridge.

The men abandoned the situation and escaped on their snow machines, shaken by what they had witnessed. Jerry also recalled an earlier sighting along the West Channel of the Nok River, where he saw a tall, young, slender Hairy Man that fled the area and swam away, avoiding contact. Fred then shares experiences from a property owner near Juneau, referred to as “Sam,” whose encounters unfolded over time rather than in a single dramatic moment. 

Sam described strange whistling that mimicked human tones, the sound and sight of bipedal movement in the trees, prolonged wood-banging that echoed through the forest, rocks landing near hunters, and even owl hoots that felt deliberately imitative rather than natural. Alongside these physical signs was a persistent, oppressive feeling in the woods—an atmosphere that made it clear something was present. Sam hesitated to speak openly for fear of ridicule, something Fred notes is common among witnesses.

He also discusses a website encounter map and highlights recurring patterns across Alaska: whistles, rock throwing, wood knocks, and vocal mimicry that suggest these accounts follow familiar themes.

Fred, a tribal council member from Dillingham, Alaska, returns to share chilling accounts of encounters with what he calls the “hairy man.” In his First Nations culture, these experiences are not sensationalized—they’re part of oral history and everyday life in remote Alaska.

In the first story, two relatives—“Penelope” and “Jasmine”—were camping on a gravel bar near the confluence of the Nuuk and Ishak rivers while heading to Harris Creek to prospect for gold. During the night, they heard strange noises and saw multiple sets of eyeshine—white and amber/red—watching from the darkness. Penelope witnessed a massive, dark, man-like figure with long arms moving along the riverbank.

What followed escalated quickly: a blood-curdling scream, pebbles tossed into the water, and even a broken birch tree thrown into the channel. A towering figure—estimated around 12 feet tall—paced, swayed, squatted, showed its teeth, and vocalized while more eyeshine appeared in the distance, suggesting multiple beings.After a warning shot was fired, the activity briefly stopped—but later something crossed the channel, circled their tent while huffing like a bear, screamed from just 15 feet away, and even rocked a large tree stump near camp. Shots were fired from inside the tent before the pair fled in their boat, leaving their camp behind.

 Reports of screams, thrown objects, tracks, and even UFO sightings are common in the remote regions he represents.He then shares a second account from about 20 years ago. Two friends, “Benson” and “Terry,” set out on a 10-day fly-fishing trip that ended early after repeated frightening events. They experienced unnatural silence, large tracks, and the constant feeling of being watched. Terry saw a large man-like figure in the tundra and later encountered something 8 to 8.5 feet tall standing in a creek, unfazed by shouting. On the sixth day, Benson followed a strange melodic whistle and appeared briefly trance-like before Terry stopped him.

That night, Benson finally saw the creature clearly—squatted about 20 feet from camp with glowing red eyeshine, a wrinkled face, massive hands, and large block-like teeth framed by thick fur. When Terry aimed his rifle, it screamed. Shots were fired, and they believed it may have been hit.The creature returned repeatedly that night and eventually grabbed and threw their tent before running off after more gunfire.

By day seven, they hiked out and were picked up early. Benson later remembered a warning from a Native friend: “Do not mess with the hairy man.”

Brian sits down with Steve of Steve Searches to talk Bigfoot research, drone mapping, and going solo in the wild. He outlines the timeline, investigative shifts, focus on stepmother Terri Horman, reported inconsistencies, and alleged murder-for-hire claims. With renewed review efforts under a new DA in 2025—including digitization and planned FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit involvement—the case remains open. A $50,000 reward is still being offered for credible information.

Back in the forest, Steve shares experiences from Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount St. Helens, including a 2008 incident near Ape Cave involving sudden silence and a strong animal odor. Around 2020–2021, he connected with regional researchers, began pro bono drone work, attended Squatch festivals, and launched Steve Searches (YouTube, Facebook, and blog) in 2023. He’s since collaborated with Michelle Heaton, the Sweet Home Oregon Sasquatch Research Group, and Sasquatch Highway.

Steve describes his evidence-first approach—mapping, measuring, documenting, and presenting findings without firm conclusions—while remaining open to high-strangeness elements. He also discusses solo field safety and recounts intense 2023–2024 encounters, including loud rock clacks, nighttime footsteps around his tent, and a large limb crashing across a road as he packed up—an event that ended the trip.

The classified Mount St. Helens documents reveal the full scope of Project Vulcan, a secret government operation to recover the bodies of creatures killed in the 1980 eruption. Military teams moved in under the cover of legitimate rescue operations, extracting remains before civilian responders could find them.

Medical reports describe three survivors, including one creature that lived for nearly three weeks before giving up and dying in a government facility. The autopsy findings are staggering, pointing to a species with cranial capacity far exceeding modern humans and brain structures suggesting complex language and abstract reasoning.

Four witnesses who were there in 1980 finally break their silence. A county sheriff who watched them load bodies onto helicopters. A helicopter pilot who flew the remains to a facility in Nevada. The story centers on Don, a lifelong Alaskan who chose a solitary life deep in the wilderness, far from roads, towns, and modern comforts. For years, Don lived in relative peace on his homestead, building a life rooted in self-reliance and a deep respect for the land. That peace begins to unravel when Don starts experiencing encounters with large, unknown beings in the area around his property. 

Through a series of emotional phone calls with Fred, Don recounts how the activity escalated, bringing fear and uncertainty into a place that once felt safe. The situation takes a devastating turn when his dog, Rebel, is violently injured, forcing Don to confront the reality that he may no longer be able to protect himself or the life he built. As the encounters intensify and the sense of being watched and threatened becomes impossible to ignore, Don is faced with an unthinkable choice. In the end, survival outweighs solitude, and he makes the heartbreaking decision to abandon the homestead he loved and leave Alaska altogether, returning to Illinois.

In the spring of 1979, a quiet cattle farmer in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Tennessee followed a strange sound into the timber beyond his fence line. Over the next few weeks, I'm gonna be sharing my new book with you—start to finish. The whole thing. It's called Bigfoot Country. All told, it's around eight hours of narration. So, I'll be putting it out in multiple episodes. And honestly... I've been sitting on this for a long time. I'm excited—and a little nervous—to finally put it out there. But before we jump in, I wanna take a minute. Just you and me.

What you're about to hear is loosely based on my life. 

Some of it happened exactly the way I tell it. No embellishment, no polish. Other parts are rooted in real experiences—real people, real moments, real emotions—but maybe stretched a bit, or reimagined, to help the story breathe. And then there are parts where… well, you get to decide what you believe.I also wanna be upfront about something. Early on, you might find yourself wondering where this is all headed. There's a lot of groundwork—family, childhood, personal history. Just know this: it's going somewhere. This book is about Bigfoot. That's the destination. I promise. Just trust me long enough to get there. At its heart, this is a story about my earliest experiences with the strange and unexplained. 

It starts with something that happened to me when I was twelve years old—an encounter with what I believe was a Sasquatch. That moment stayed with me. It shaped a lot of who I became. And for years, I struggled with how—or even if—I should ever tell that story. Because how do you talk about something the world insists isn't real? How do you open yourself up like that, knowing people are gonna judge you, doubt you, or dismiss you entirely?But these stories have always mattered to me. This book has always mattered. And at some point, I realized I was done keeping it all tucked away. Here's the thing, though—I didn't just write about Bigfoot. I wrote about me. All of me. My childhood. My parents. My failures. My struggles. And yeah… Dani.

I know that part isn't gonna sit well with everyone. I get that. Some folks are gonna have opinions, and that's their right. But for me, leaving any of that out would've been dishonest. I can't ask you to trust me with these experiences and then hide pieces of who I am. I can't tell my story without including the person who stood beside me through the hardest parts of it. That's just not how I live, and it's not how this book was written.Believe me, I thought about sanding down the rough edges. Making it cleaner. Safer. Easier to swallow. Cutting out the parts that might make people uncomfortable. But I couldn't do it. I've spent too much of my life holding back, and I'm done with that.So this is me. This is my story. All of it. Some of what you'll hear happened exactly as I describe it. 

Some of it is how I imagine things might have gone—if the timing had been different, if I'd pushed harder, if the world worked the way I think it sometimes should.And one last thing before we start—this is Book One. There's more coming. A lot more. This is just the beginning. I hope you enjoy Bigfoot Country... as much as I did writing it. 

Part One is called The Hollow, and it begins in September of 1984. I was eleven years old, just a few months shy of twelve, and my family had just moved to a place called Lyerly, Georgia. Population next to nothing. No stoplight. One gas station. The kind of town where everybody knew everybody's business before you even finished doing it. We moved into an old house at the end of a dirt road—a house that looked like something had crawled there to die. White paint gone gray. Porch sagging in the middle. Eighty acres of woods stretching out behind it like a wall. 

My father, Jerry Patterson, was a drinker. A man whose silence usually meant a storm was building. My mother, Jean, was small but fierce in the ways that mattered—even if she couldn't fix the things that were broken in our family. She stayed. She always stayed. The woods became my...

Fred from the SubArctic Alaska Sasqutch YouTube Channel shares three chilling Sasquatch encounters from the Last Frontier. A surveyor working near Tuck in the late 1980s finds himself stalked by multiple creatures while mapping remote acreage north of the Parks Highway. What begins with rock throwing and glimpses of a gray-skinned, black-eyed figure through his transit scope escalates when his entire campsite ends up mysteriously hoisted into a tree. The harassment continues as trees crash across his path and shadowy figures close in from all directions.

Fred also shares Brian's harrowing experience on the Richardson Highway near Delta Junction during a winter trip to help a friend with a broken-down snow machine. A black figure spotted on the snow leads to a terrifying pursuit through waist-deep powder, complete with a screaming creature and a truck that almost fails to start.

The episode closes with Clint's snow machining trip near Paxton at the start of the Denali Highway, where a massive white Sasquatch with dark roots showing through its fur leaves enormous tracks in the snow. One witness ends up pinned under an 800 RMK snow machine, when his buddy drops the machine and runs.

In early September of 1799, the Stone Expedition reunited deep in the unmapped wilderness beyond the Ohio River. Nine men gathered at the designated rendezvous, carrying fresh provisions and renewed hope. Tonight we're doing something a little different here on Sasquatch Odyssey. On Christmas Eve, when the teenage daughter Emma leaves a plate of cookies on the porch railing and looks up toward the treeline with a knowing smile, everything changes. 

Thorn makes a decision that will alter the course of his life and theirs. What follows is a journey through a blizzard, an impossible winter rose, a lost little boy named Jacob who followed what he thought were Santa's footprints into the storm, and a rescue that bridges the vast distance between two worlds that were never supposed to meet.

I love a good Christmas story.
The kind where something strange and wonderful happens out in the wilderness. Where the magic of the season reaches places most people never go. Where even the darkest corners of the forest feel touched by something warm and old and meaningful.Over the years, I’ve told you stories like that.

Stories of Sasquatch sightings on snowy December mornings.
Of mysterious gifts left on remote cabin doorsteps.
Of unexplained tracks leading to and from places where no tracks should exist at all.But tonight, friends, I’m not here to warm your heart.Tonight, I’m here to freeze your blood.

South Carolina. 1985.

A young insurance adjuster named Gerald Hutchins inherits a remote cabin deep in the forest from his great-uncle Amos. The old man had lived alone out there for more than twenty years, and the family whispered that he came back from the war… changed. Haunted. Given to muttering in languages no one recognized. Drawing strange symbols he would immediately burn in the fireplace.Gerald decides the cabin would be the perfect place to spend Christmas with his wife, Ellen, and their thirteen-year-old son, Marcus.

And some things that were meant to stay in the old country followed our ancestors across the ocean—hiding in the shadows of their ships, waiting patiently for the right moment to remind us that the old ways never truly died.

They just learned how to wait.Long before Santa Claus became the jolly gift-giver we know today, the winter solstice was a time of fear as much as celebration in the Alpine regions of Europe. While Saint Nicholas rewarded good children, his dark companion dealt with the rest.

Krampus. Half-goat. Half-demon. All nightmare. A creature with curved horns, a serpentine tongue, chains forged in hellfire, and birch switches for the wicked. A basket on its back to carry its prizes away—down to whatever hell it called home.

Krampusnacht, celebrated on December fifth, saw young men dress as the creature and roam the streets, terrorizing towns. But the oldest stories—the ones whispered long before costumes—spoke of something far older than men in masks. A being that existed before Christianity tried to tame it. A being that still walks the winter forests when nights grow long and the barriers between worlds wear thin.A being that always comes back.

This is not a show I ever planned to do. In all my years of podcasting, I've never felt compelled to look back and take stock of where we've been. But twenty twenty-four and twenty twenty-five have been different. These years have been brutal for our community, and I couldn't stay silent any longer. We lost giants. Real giants. Men who shaped the very foundation of modern Sasquatch research and carried the torch forward into the twenty-first century. 

Tonight, I'm setting aside whatever differences might have existed to honor what they gave us and acknowledge that we've lost some truly important figures.Doctor Jeff Meldrum passed away in September of twenty twenty-five after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was sixty-seven years old. The full professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University gave our community something precious: legitimacy. With his collection of over three hundred footprint casts and his landmark book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, he picked up where Grover Krantz left off and continued the tradition of academic rigor in a field that desperately needed it.

I had the privilege of sitting down with Jeff just a few weeks before he passed, and that conversation will stay with me forever.

Henry Franzoni died on August twenty-second, twenty twenty-four, also at sixty-seven. If Meldrum brought scientific credibility to Bigfoot research, Henry brought the internet. Back in nineteen ninety-three, he created the first Bigfoot website and the first online discussion group, the Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference. From that foundation grew pretty much every Bigfoot organization and website you see today. 

I interviewed Henry about a year before he passed, and afterward he sent me a signed copy of his book, Failing in a Cooler Way: Why I Never Found Bigfoot. That title tells you everything you need to know about who Henry was as a person.

Steven Streufert, owner of Bigfoot Books in Willow Creek, California, is also gone now. Steven was an institution, a historian and scholar who knew the stories, the players, and the timeline of how this phenomenon evolved from local legend to international sensation. He was a key member of the Bluff Creek Project, the team that rediscovered the exact location where Patterson and Gimlin filmed their famous footage in nineteen sixty-seven. Steven and I had our public disagreements in his Facebook group, but that's what a community of researchers should look like. We can all have our opinions and still show mutual respect for one another.Beyond the deaths, we lost places too. 

The Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, California, closed its doors after twenty years. And in December of twenty twenty-four, two men from Portland died from exposure in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest while searching for Sasquatch on Christmas Eve.

I explore the legacies of these three researchers, discuss the current state of Sasquatch research, examine the Patterson-Gimlin film at fifty-seven years, address what the skeptics say, talk about the nearly one thousand witnesses I've interviewed over almost forty years, and reflect on the lessons we can learn from the men we lost. I also share a word about safety for anyone venturing into the wilderness in pursuit of this mystery.

The disagreements don't matter. The bickering doesn't matter. What matters is the work. What matters is the pursuit. These men spent their lives investigating something that most of society considers a joke, and they did it because they believed the truth was worth pursuing. Their torches have been passed. We'll do our best to carry them forward.

Heads up, everyone — over the coming weeks I’ll be releasing a special Wednesday series centered on the South Mountain region of North Carolina. Jerry will be sharing some truly incredible encounter stories from in and around that area, and each one adds a new layer to the mystery that seems to live in those woods. In this first installment, we’re taken into the South Mountains through a terrifying family experience that began as an ordinary camping trip and turned into something they’ll never forget.

As night settled in, strange wood knocks started echoing through the trees, followed by unsettling “whoops” and other sounds that didn’t match anything familiar. The atmosphere shifted fast from quiet wilderness to a feeling of being surrounded, watched, and pushed to the edge of panic. What happened out there left them shaken, confused, and certain that something unknown had moved in close. Jerry also shares additional encounters from across different generations, showing that whatever people are running into in the South Mountains isn’t tied to one era or one family.

A mid-century story follows a farm boy confronted by a hulking presence with glowing red eyes, an early-1900s account recalls a grandfather being chased through the woods by multiple creatures, and a modern encounter describes two men hearing disturbing sounds and briefly seeing something near their home that they still can’t explain. Together, these stories paint a chilling picture of a region where the unexplained has never really stopped happening — and where the line between legend and reality feels uncomfortably thin.

Welcome to this special collection episode of Sasquatch Odyssey, featuring six of the most compelling Bigfoot encounters I’ve documented across the Southeastern United States over the past five years. These stories span sixty years of fear, awe, and unanswered questions, carrying us from Alabama’s river bottoms to South Carolina’s swamps, and showing why the South may be one of the last true sanctuaries for something we still don’t understand.

We open in the suffocating heat of Alabama in 1967, where a power company lineman working near the Cahaba River noticed something impossible: massive handprints sunk deep into a utility pole. Moments later, he found himself face to face with a towering presence that moved with purpose and intelligence. That encounter sets the tone for everything that follows—brief, terrifying interactions where the creature controls the moment, revealing itself only on its own terms.From there, we climb into the mountains of North Georgia in 1973, where four seasoned hunters discovered the woods had a hierarchy they didn’t sit atop.

Near Blue Ridge, their camp became the target of relentless intimidation—rocks crashing through darkness, trees shaking violently, and a chilling discovery at dawn: dozens of stick figures arranged in a perfect warning circle around them. The night didn’t just scare them; it shattered friendships and ended their lives in the forest forever.

The third account takes us into Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains in 1985, where a park ranger and wildlife biologist experienced something that demolished her scientific certainty. 

While stationed in a fire tower, she watched a massive creature climb the structure and examine her equipment with unsettling curiosity, as if it understood what it was seeing. Even more disturbing was what she learned afterward—that similar encounters had been quietly documented for decades, tucked away and never meant for public eyes.The most heartbreaking story comes from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas in 1991.

A family camping trip turned into a nightmare when towering beings approached their site and demonstrated strength beyond anything human—crushing rocks in their hands while the family huddled in terror. A young girl watched it unfold, and the trauma that followed tore the family apart, leaving permanent scars long after the woods fell silent again. In 2002, deep in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest, an experienced hiker found himself living through an encounter unlike any other in my files. 

He described three days in captivity with what appeared to be a family group of these beings, observing tool use, complex social behavior, and a kind of focused curiosity toward human objects. His story challenges the idea of Sasquatch as a solitary wilderness phantom and suggests something closer to culture—structured intelligence living beyond our reach.Our final encounter lands in South Carolina in 2014, when college biology students captured forty-three minutes of high-definition footage of a creature inspecting their research equipment with clear understanding of its purpose.

What happened next was just as chilling as what they filmed: a rapid government response, confiscated evidence, and enforced silence that raises the question of how long this phenomenon has truly been known—and how actively it’s been buried.

Across six stories and six decades, the same threads surface again and again: the heavy, musky odor that announces their presence, the massive handprints left behind like signatures, and the unnerving sense of being watched by something that doesn’t panic or flee—but evaluates. 

Most unsettling of all is the repeated realization that these creatures could harm us effortlessly, yet choose restraint instead. Witnesses don’t describe a mere animal. They describe something hovering in a blurred space between human and beast, perfectly adapted to...

Fred from Alaska shares a chilling collection of Alaskan Sasquatch encounters that stretch across decades of tundra silence and deep wilderness unease. In this episode, the host returns to Vincent Wesley’s 2011 moose-hunting trip, when what should have been a routine outing took a terrifying turn after Vincent crossed paths with what locals call the “hairy man.” 

After new conversations with Vincent’s sister Grace and villagers from the surrounding region, the story widens into something far more unsettling, as fresh details surface about strange vocalizations, unexplained movement in the brush, and a long pattern of sightings that locals have kept quiet for years.

As the episode unfolds, listeners hear additional accounts from villagers who describe the same kind of presence moving through their homeland. A group of women and children recount a 2021 encounter with an immense, unfamiliar figure that appeared briefly but left a lasting psychological mark, reinforcing the sense that these beings are not legends in Alaska, but a reality quietly woven into daily life.

He also shares a haunting story from the 1970s, told by Lorraine, a volcanologist working in remote Alaskan terrain who experienced something eerie and intelligent watching her from the edge of isolation—an encounter that still rattles her decades later. Another disturbing account comes from Corey and Bob, who describe a tense run-in near Snake River with a mysterious figure that seemed to track them with deliberate intent, leaving them convinced they were being studied, not hunted.


Out there in the tundra, in the places where the land feels endless and human voices fade, something else may be living alongside us—watching, moving, and occasionally stepping into view just long enough to remind people they are not alone.

In this powerful and haunting episode, we share the life-changing testimony of Mary, a ninety-two-year-old Yup'ik woman who survived one of the most frightening Sasquatch encounters ever recorded. This isn’t a tale of footprints or shadows in the trees—this is the story of what happened when an Alaskan village along the Copper River faced something ancient, intelligent, and deadly during the summer of 1962. Mary was only eight when her peaceful village became a hunting ground.

What began with one trapper disappearing quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal that claimed several lives, including two of Mary’s closest childhood friends. Through her memories, we experience the fear that grew as massive footprints appeared around homes, red eyes watched from the twilight, and the villagers realized this was no bear.Her account connects deeply to Yup'ik traditions and the old stories of the kushta’ka—the hairymen who walked the land long before outsiders arrived.

Mary’s grandmother recognized the danger immediately, explaining that sometimes one of these beings “goes bad,” much like a rabid wolf, and develops a deadly hunger for humans. As children vanished and attacks intensified, twelve villages came together in a desperate attempt to fight back. Forty-three hunters formed a war party armed with everything from WWII rifles to a centuries-old Russian bear spear blessed by a shaman. 

Their battle in the deep forest was brutal, courageous, and left lasting scars on everyone involved.But Mary’s story goes far beyond violence. Sixty years later, she revealed a secret second encounter—this time with a female Sasquatch who returned something precious to Mary. Whether it was grief, remorse, or understanding, the moment changed how Mary saw these beings forever. Throughout her life, Mary witnessed other encounters that suggested a fragile, uneasy coexistence.

The female that fought so fiercely was defending her mate, just as the villagers were defending their families. As Mary reached ninety-three, she shared her final thoughts about the visits she believed she still received from the surviving creature—now old, quiet, and watchful. She spoke of dreams where she saw the story through the creature’s eyes and understood that what happened wasn’t evil—it was two worlds colliding in a place both called home.

Her final message is a warning: as the wilderness shrinks, the fragile peace between humans and these ancient beings may not hold. She shares this story not to encourage people to seek Sasquatch, but to remind us of the respect and boundaries forged at such a terrible cost.

This episode dives into one of the most credible Bigfoot encounters ever recorded — the story of the Minerva Monster and the Cayton family’s terrifying summer of 1978 in Minerva, Ohio. Unlike most sightings that happen deep in the woods, this creature came straight to someone’s home — pressing its face against the kitchen window and shattering the line between folklore and reality.

It began with strange noises, an awful smell, and a dog too scared to go outside after dark. But soon, the family and their friends saw it with their own eyes — a massive, hair-covered figure standing near an old strip mine behind their house. We’ll walk through that unforgettable night in August when the creature appeared at their window, and the family’s fear turned to panic. Deputy James Shannon led an investigation that uncovered giant footprints, a tunnel through the brush, and hair samples that later disappeared. 

He called it the strangest case of his career.As word spread, the Caytons’ quiet home became a circus of reporters, Bigfoot hunters, and curiosity seekers. They were mocked, harassed, and even taunted in public — yet they never took back their story. Decades later, their account has remained completely consistent.

You’ll also hear from other witnesses around Paris Township who saw or heard something similar, as well as journalists and researchers who came away convinced the family was telling the truth.

In this special remastered episode of Sasquatch Odyssey, we honor the late Dr. Jeff Meldrum — a man whose dedication, kindness, and scientific curiosity forever changed the way the world views Sasquatch research.There are some people who leave a mark so deep, so genuine, that their absence feels almost impossible to comprehend. For me, one of those people was Dr. Jeff Meldrum.

I first met Jeff back in March of 2021, when I was just a fledgling podcaster trying to find my footing. He didn’t have to say yes to being on my show — but he did. Graciously. Humbly. From that moment on, he set the tone for the kind of person I’d come to know him to be.

Just a few short years later, I found myself standing beside him on stage, sharing the spotlight with Jeff, Cliff Barackman, and Michael Freeman at a conference in Idaho. It was surreal — the same man I had admired for years was now a colleague, a friend, and a mentor. The last time I saw Jeff was back at the end of July, at the Smoky Mountain Bigfoot Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. 

We had just finished setting up our booths when I noticed Jeff sitting quietly off to the side. I carried over the plaster casts of the footprints from our property — as I’d done before — hoping to get his thoughts.

We sat and talked for a while — about his upcoming retirement, about life, and about the things that still fascinated him most. He joked about trying to convince his wife, Lauren, that he needed more space at home to store his growing collection of casts since he’d be losing his massive lab space at the university.I laughed, but something felt different. Jeff still had that kindness in his eyes, that thoughtful way about him — but there was a quiet heaviness there too.

Still, as always, he was generous with his time and his spirit.I had no idea it would be the last time I’d see him.Since his passing, I’ve watched as countless people have shared their memories and tributes — from students and colleagues to lifelong fans around the world.

I didn’t rush to do the same, because I needed time. Time to sit with the loss. Time to reflect on what Jeff meant to me, and to this community.

So tonight, I want to honor him in the most fitting way I can think of — by going back to where it all began.What you’re about to hear is our very first conversation — fully remastered from the original Sasquatch Odyssey interview that aired back in March of 2021.

This is my way of saying thank you, Jeff.

In this episode, we’re heading deep into the muggy heart of Florida — into the swamps, forests, and backroads most people only see from the safety of an airboat. Out here, under the cover of night and cypress moss, something moves through the shadows. Something big. Something that hundreds of people claim to have seen over the last two centuries — but science still refuses to acknowledge.

We’re talking about the Florida Skunk Ape — the Sunshine State’s answer to Bigfoot, and one of the most unsettling mysteries still hiding in America’s wilderness.You might think Florida’s too developed for anything unknown to stay hidden. But across generations, the reports haven’t stopped. Law enforcement officers, hunters, families, and veterans have all described seeing the same thing: a massive, hair-covered figure with glowing red eyes and a smell so strong it made their stomachs turn.

These aren’t campfire tales — they’re official reports, eyewitness accounts, and in some cases, physical evidence collected by people who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking up.

We’ll explore nearly 200 years of sightings and encounters, from frontier settlers in the early 1800s who described “man-sized monkeys” raiding fishing camps, to the terrifying 1929 incident at the Perky Bat Tower, where something powerful enough to shake a thirty-foot structure drove out every bat inside. We’ll look at the case of two Palm Beach County deputies in the 1970s — both seasoned outdoorsmen — who came face to face with a seven-foot creature while investigating livestock attacks. 

They even recovered hair samples caught on a barbed wire fence. You’ll also hear about the Vietnam veteran who, in 1977, watched an eight-foot creature emerge from the mangroves behind his home and was so shaken that he cleared thirty feet of brush from around his property just to sleep at night. And then there are the photographs. In 2000, an elderly woman in Sarasota County sent two chilling images to the sheriff’s office, showing what appeared to be a reddish-brown, ape-like creature crouched behind her backyard. 

The so-called Myakka Photos are still being analyzed and debated over two decades later.We’ll talk about Dave Shealy, the man who’s dedicated his life to proving the Skunk Ape exists — running his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in the heart of the Everglades. His 2000 video footage of a creature running through the swamp is still one of the most-watched cryptid videos online. But this episode goes deeper than the sightings.

We’re asking why so many people — trained law enforcement officers, hunters, and locals — believe they’ve seen something that modern science says shouldn’t exist. We’ll dive into the psychology, the skepticism, the cultural roots of the legend, and even the Seminole people’s stories of Esti Capcaki, the “tall hairy man” that predates European settlement by centuries.

By the end of this episode, you’ll feel the humid air, hear the buzz of the swamp at night, and maybe understand why so many Floridians won’t step foot into certain parts of the wilderness after dark. Blackwood Gorge looks like paradise on a postcard—towering firs, crystal streams, and endless trails. But beneath the beauty lies something older than legend, something that’s been watching the woods for longer than humans have walked them. For years, hikers have vanished here, leaving behind only impossible clues: backpacks hanging twenty feet up in the trees, footprints far too large to belong to any man, and wood knocks that echo like warnings in the dark.

This is the story of The Huntsman—a serial killer who believed the wilderness would hide his crimes. But Blackwood Gorge was already claimed by another predator, one that knows the difference between the innocent and the guilty. As the body count grows and desperation sets in, the hunter becomes the hunted, and the forest delivers justice in the only way it knows how: primal, ancient, and merciless.

In this episode, Fred from Alaska recounts a chilling first-hand encounter with a creature known as the 'Hairy Man' by Joseph and his cousins during a fishing trip in 1987. The story includes eerie whistling sounds, sightings of a large neanderthal-like figure, and the superstitions that are perpetuated in light of such encounters.

 Fred also discusses a subsequent trip taken by Joseph and his brother to the same location, resulting in another close call with the creature. Additionally, Fred shares an experience from his relative Nikolai, who had a similar chilling encounter with the Hairy Man while on a hunting trip near the New Yauk River. These narratives highlight how superstitious beliefs are deeply ingrained in local culture and often linked with coincidental tragedies, such as the unfortunate drowning of Joseph's young cousin shortly after the encounter.
