Nach Genre filtern
A podcast about electric vehicles, renewables, and things that are interesting to electric vehicle owners. In each episode, we'll be discussing one aspect of EV ownership in depth. Episodes are released one per week (usually on a Monday) so make sure you're subscribed in iTunes, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
- 211 - 209 - The No Home Charger Episode
In Episode 209 Gary chats with a number of people who live without home charging.
It's, obviously, easier if you can charge where you live. But that doesn't mean that not having a home charger makes EV ownership untenable.
We talk to people who find it easy, difficult, complex, good value, or expensive.
Is it expensive? How much is AC/ destination charging vs how much is rapid/ ultra rapid charging? Is it easier with a Tesla?
This season of the podcast is sponsored by Zapmap, the free to download app that helps EV drivers search, plan, and pay for their charging.

Mon, 08 Apr 2024 - 35min - 208 - 206 - The Two Cars Episode
In this episode of EV Musings, Gary discusses the idea that households with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric. The conversation explores the case of households with two fossil fuel cars, addresses cost and range concerns, highlights the availability of small-sized EVs, and discusses the benefits of owning an EV. He also emphasizes the role of education and test drives in overcoming ignorance and misinformation about electric vehicles.
Takeaways
Households with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric.
Cost and range concerns can be addressed, especially with the availability of affordable second-hand EVs and a wide range of small-sized EVs.
Hybrids can be seen as a compromise, but if the goal is to go electric, it's better to choose a full electric vehicle.
Owning an EV opens up opportunities for low-priced EV charging tariffs and other benefits.
Education and test drives play a crucial role in changing perceptions and increasing EV uptake.
If you have 2 cars and off-street parking one of them could be an EV. I'll tell you why.

Mon, 01 Apr 2024 - 19min - 207 - 205 - The Climate Scientist Episode
In Episode 205 Gary looks at climate in a fascinating conversation with Richard Allan- a climate scientist and academic. They discuss the difference between climate and weather, why carbon is so important despite being such a small part of the atmosphere, why some climate scientists disagree about global warming and we hear his thoughts on carbon offsets and geoengineering.
Ever wanted to ask a climate scientist the questions about climate that nobody is asking? I do that for you
Guest Details:
Richard Allan is a professor of Climate Science at the University of Reading Department of Meteorology. His research is driven by the fundamental question: how much will Earth warm in the current century and what are the implications for the global water cycle, upon which societies and ecosystems depend? He uses Earth Observation data to explore fluctuations in clouds, water vapour, rainfall and the Earth's radiative energy balance and use this information to assess the realism of climate prediction models and improve our understanding of the climate system. He was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 6th assessment report.

Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 33min - 200 - 198 - The FUDBusting Episode
In Episode 198 Gary looks at the problem of misinformation in the EV and renewables world. We know there’s always been issues of people spreading bad information about EVs (The first episode of this podcast was called ‘Myths and Legends’, after all). But recently it seems that the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) surrounding EVs has stepped up a notch. We talk with Quentin Willson and Claire Cullen from Stop Burning Stuff about this issue.
Within our EV bubble it's often easy to forget that what people gear on social media (and even mainstream media) can influence them a lot more than we imagine.
With newspapers printing anti-EV marticles daily how can we combat this?
Guest Details:
With over two decades of experience in strategic marketing across the energy, digital, and not-for-profit sectors, Claire has a wealth of expertise in campaign development and communications. She has supported the Fully Charged Show marketing activities for a number of years so has a good grounding in the sector, and is a keen advocate for the transition to clean energy and transport. In her role as head of the #StopBurningStuff initiative, she works with subject matter experts and draws upon the real life experiences of EV drivers to address misinformation, promote the truth, and provide a credible source of information on EVs and clean energy to politicians, the media and the general public.
Motoring journalist and transport campaigner Quentin Willson is one of Britain’s best known automotive media faces. He presented BBC Top Gear for ten years along with Fifth Gear, Britain’s Worst Driver, The Classic Car Show and The Car’s The Star, has authored 11 motoring books and won The British Press Awards - Motoring Writer of the Year. In 2020 he founded FairCharge, an EV campaign group to make EV transition more understood, accessible, and affordable, and to push the Government to drive the energy transition forward. Quentin is an EV pioneer having been driving EVs daily since 2009, has owned seven different battery-only models and currently own two EVs.

Mon, 16 Oct 2023 - 20min - 189 - 187 - The Ripple Energy Episode
In Episode 187 Gary looks at how you can get a share of a wind turbine or solar farm in a discussion with Sarah Merrick from Ripple Energy
There are situations where some people might not be in a position (either financially or structurally) to do something like add solar panels to their roof.
People who rent, for example. People who live in houses covered by listed building status. People who don’t have a roof because they live in an apartment block. How are they supposed to gain from, say, solar panel installation? They shouldn’t be excluded from the energy transition because of that.
This is why companies like Ripple Energy are a bit of a godsend for people in those situations.

Mon, 26 Jun 2023 - 21min - 178 - 176 - The Jack Scarlett Episode
In Episode 176 Gary chats with Jack Scarlett from the Fully Charged Show. They discuss Chinese EVs, electric conversions, induction charging, cheaper/ smaller EVs, and whether Tesla is resting on its laurels.
I checked the Fully Charged show YouTube channel to see if I could determine how many car reviews Jack’s done. He has his own playlist which has 86 videos but - as he said - these are not all car review ones. 21 of them cover topics which are EV related but not strictly car review and in and amongst there are a couple of episodes of almost breaking news where he chats with Robert Llewellyn.
So the answer is 65, which isn’t bad at all.

Mon, 23 Jan 2023 - 38min - 160 - 158 - The Northern Ireland Episode
This is episode 158 of EV Musings a podcast about renewables, electric vehicles and things that are interesting to electric vehicle owners.
On the show today we'll be looking at one of the poor relations of the EV charging world: Northern Ireland. For many years they had a really limited number of Rapid chargers - many of which were not maintained. The situation was dire for NI EV owners.
But that is finally starting to change.
We chat with Mark McCall from EVANI for an update.

Mon, 16 Jan 2023 - 20min - 159 - 157 - The Broken Charger Episode
This is episode 157 of EV Musings a podcast about renewables, electric vehicles and things that are interesting to electric vehicle owners.
On the show today we'll be looking at broken chargers, a topic that is, no doubt, very close to many listeners hearts. Especially if they’ve tried public charging recently and had issues. Reading my social media timeline would seem to indicate that this is a major problem - although I’m sure the charge point operators look at it differently.
Today we chat about good charging networks, a little history, what issues we’re having, and what the solutions are.

On the show today we'll be looking at converting your current car to electric.
There are two ways to do this:
- You take your car to a professional who has years of experience doing it
- You get yourself some old batteries and stuff like that and have a bash yourself
We speak to people who've done it both ways.

This is episode 153 of EV Musings a podcast about renewables, electric vehicles and things that are interesting to electric vehicle owners.
On the show today we'll be looking at centralised payment processes for charging.
Before you yawn and scream BORING!, bear with me a moment
The UK has 80 different charge point operators. Germany has many more. Ideally payment should be via a contactless payment card. But there are companies (usually those with large fleets) who need access to all the chargers without the hassle of dealing with individual expense claims for charging.
Today we talk to Paua who have a solution for this.

On the show today we’re doing some educating and talking about what happens when you stay on a rapid charger when it’s gone beyond 80% state of charge.
Charging above this rate usually involves throttling which slows down the charge. So what are the circumstances under which you should stay on a charger when it's charging slowly, and when should you consider getting off and freeing the unit up for others?

ERRATUM: I’d like to correct an error from a previous episode. In episode 142 - The Private Jet Episode I said that it would be better to take the 36 flights that depart London for New York every day and put those passengers on a ship instead. Listener Lewis Standing pointed out to me that the carbon footprint for cruise ships is, actually, higher per passenger km than flying - which means that statement about sending them on a ship is nonsense.

On the show today we'll be looking at Charge Point Operators.
I wanted to apologise to anyone expecting this to be the round Table Episode at the end of the season. For various timing and logistical reasons, I wasn’t able to get this organised in time to be a part of this current batch of 20 episodes. So I now need to sit and work out whether I want to do an additional one-off episode to present the round table or leave it until the next season and we bookend the season with a round table to start and a different one to end.
Or do I just skip it for this season?

We talk with Kate Tyrell from ChargeSafe about what she's doing about this.
