- 386 - Kenneth Law: Poison In The Post
In October 2021, David Parfett tragically found his son, Tom, dead in a hotel room in Surrey. Tom was just 22 years old.
David was determined to find the truth behind his son’s death. He followed Tom’s digital footprint and made a shocking discovery.
A man called Kenneth Law had set up an online company to exploit vulnerable people suffering from mental illness. He helped them take their own lives by sending them poison through the post.
David soon discovered that Tom wasn’t the only person to have received the lethal substance. Law had sent more than 1,200 packages to 40 countries around the world.
With the help of a journalist, David tracked down Law and confronted him about his crimes. Law was then arrested in Canada and formally admitted to causing the deaths of 73 victims from England and Wales. However, following a plea deal, Law pleaded guilty to 14 counts of aiding and abetting suicide in Canada.
In this episode, we hear from some of the victims’ families at the Supreme Court of Ontario, where a hearing took place last week. More than 50 relatives of Canadian and British victims gave incredibly moving statements to the judge.

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 47min - 385 - Rape Courts: Will They Make A Difference?
Can new government measures really improve the experience of rape victims in the criminal justice system? With thousands of rape and sexual assault cases waiting to reach court, ministers are promising dedicated courtrooms, fixed trial dates and more support for victims.
In this episode, Liz speaks to senior barrister Mary Prior KC about whether the proposals can make a meaningful difference. Mary explains why delays are so damaging for both victims and those accused, the practical problems facing courts across England and Wales, and why she believes much more investment is needed to fix a system struggling under years of pressure.

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 32min - 384 - Lucy Letby, The Inquiry: Babies Should Not Have Died
We now know for certain, babies should not have died at the Countess of Chester Hospital. In her scathing report into the failings which allowed Lucy Letby to harm babies for months, Lady Justice Thirlwall said three babies should not have died and seven more should not have been harmed. In her scathing report she condemned a fundamental lack of understanding of basic safeguarding regulations, a “tribal” approach from nurses, and an “exercise in spin” from senior leaders to delay police being called in to investigate. She also said the parents of the babies were treated reprehensibly. In this episode Caroline and Liz have her key findings and her urgent recommendations.

Could Lucy Letby have been stopped sooner? Could babies have been saved? Was there an orchestrated hospital cover up? Were parents consistently lied to? Did a toxic hospital culture allow a serial killer to remain undetected for months?
Today Lady Justice Thirlwall is likely to answer these questions and more when she publishes her long-awaited report into the failings at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
In this bonus episode Caroline and Liz dissect the key moments from the seven month inquiry as they prepare to read her findings.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 1h 00min - 382 - Chris Brain: The Priest, The Cult, The Trial
Today on the podcast Caroline and Ryan have the extraordinary allegations against a Church of England Priest, who ran what's been called a "cult" service to abuse his female "disciples". Chris Brain admits having sexual relations with worshippers at the infamous Nine O'Clock Service in Sheffield in the 1980s and 1990s, but he's now accused of criminal offences. The allegation is the women he targeted were so vulnerable, isolated and frightened that they did not have the capacity to consent.
Also today, Caroline chats to Liz about the imminent report by Lady Justice Thirlwall into the crimes of Lucy Letby.

Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 42min - 381 - Who cares about the Jury?
Does the law need to change in order to better protect jurors?
That is what the House of Lords is now considering. Long-established laws means members of a jury are not allowed to discuss a case with anyone during a trial. And even after a trial is finished, what they can say about what they have seen and heard is limited. But it's now recognised that the evidence in many cases is traumatising and jurors need more help. But that would mean amending the law and that is what a new inquiry is looking into this week.
In this episode Caroline chats to Doctor Hannah Fawcett about her work on the wellbeing of jurors and what she wants to see the inquiry recommend.

Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 35min - 380 - Christopher Phillips: Did a Grief Disorder lead to a Prison Sentence?
60-year-old Christopher Phillips kept his mother’s body in a freezer for almost three years, talking to her about her favourite television programmes and holding her hand as if she were still alive. A court heard that he was suffering from a little-known mental health condition called Prolonged Grief Disorder. But he also kept collecting her pension money - and he's now been sent to prison.
In this episode, Liz speaks to Dr Michael Duffy, a psychotherapist and specialist in trauma therapy, about what happens when grief becomes prolonged and overwhelming. They discuss Christopher Phillips’s unusual case, how the condition differs from normal grief and depression, why it can be missed by doctors, and whether a better understanding of Prolonged Grief Disorder could have prevented his grief from spiralling into crime.

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 26min - 379 - Jools Sweeney: The Continued Search for Answers
In this episode Liz speaks to Ellen Roome, the mum who has spent the past four years fighting for answers about the tragic death of her 14-year-old son Jools. After an inquest that lasted just 23 minutes and failed to properly examine his phone or social media activity, Ellen has now succeeded in getting the original verdict quashed by the High Court and a new inquest opened.
Ellen tells Liz why she believes social media could hold the key to understanding what happened to Jools, how her campaign has helped change the law, and why she is continuing to push for stronger protections for children online.
She also gives an update on the legal action she and other bereaved parents are taking against TikTok in the US.

Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 26min - 378 - Simon Levy: A Sexual Predator - "A Threat To All Women"
Simon Levy will never be released from prison. A judge today decided his crimes against three women were so horrific, so depraved, that he should spend the rest of his life behind bars.
In this episode, Liz and Nick have all the details from an emotional day at the Old Bailey, including the words of Sheryl Wilkins’ mum Mary and sister Lindsay, and Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo’s daughter Nazly. They also hear from Levy’s surviving victim, who told the court he had taken away her soul and her dignity. But as those women described the devastation his crimes had caused, Simon Levy sat emotionless in the dock.

Wed, 12 Aug 2026 - 22min - 377 - Simon Levy: A Sexual Predator - It was Predictable
In this episode Emeritus Professor of Criminology David Wilson tells Caroline that Simon Levy was a textbook sexual predator who should have never slipped through the net. He says the way Levy was attacking women on the tube always had the potential to escalate to rape and to murder and until all men are more willing to stand up and call out predatory behaviour, the danger men like Simon Levy pose will continue to be underestimated.

Simon Levy has just been convicted of murdering two women and of raping a third. But we can know now he should and could have been stopped sooner. Fri, 07 Aug 2026 - 36min - 374 - Simon Levy: A Sexual Predator - “This prosecution does not stand up”
In this episode Caroline and Nick have the final stages of this trial before the jury start to consider their verdicts. It’s the last opportunity for the barristers to persuade the jury of their arguments. On behalf of Simon Levy, the jury were told no crimes took place, the first alleged victim was not raped and the two dead women were not murdered - they died from drug use. Conversely the prosecution told the jury Simon Levy is a sexual predator, a dangerous man who has a fascination with rape and murder. The final decision on the verdicts in this case rests with the jury.

Fri, 12 Jun 2026 - 24min - 358 - The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: “A Tragedy Waiting to Happen”
Preston Davey was in “peril at the hands of Jamie Varley” and John McGowan Fazakerly knew it - that’s what Peter Wright KC told the jury in this episode of the podcast with Caroline and Liz. As he closed his case, the prosecutor said Preston’s death was a “tragedy waiting to happen” - he said Jamie Varley had a sexual interest in children and he subjected Preston to a “litany of physical and psychological abuse” - and John McGowan Fazakerly could have foreseen what would happen. The danger Preston was in, Mr Wright said, was “blindingly obvious”.

Tue, 02 Jun 2026 - 19min - 355 - The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: Preston’s “brilliant life”
In this episode Caroline and Liz have the cross-examination of Jamie Varley. He denies the prosecution’s claims that he abused Preston to punish him because he was struggling with being his main carer and resented his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, for working or being away.
He also denies making up a ‘cock and bull story’ about how Preston died to cover his tracks.
Instead he tells the jury that, although he made mistakes and was sometimes a little rough with Preston, he loved him and he had a brilliant life.
He says he did not cause Preston’s bruises, or sexually abuse or murder him.

Wed, 20 May 2026 - 15min - 350 - The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: “Frozen Watchfulness”
In this episode Caroline and Liz have the evidence from a doctor who said in some of the videos on Jamie Varley’s phone, Preston Davey was in life threatening situations. Dr Jo Gifford, an expert in child sex abuse, said Preston showed signs of being mistreated and abused, and there was footage of him before he died which showed several “near misses.”
We also have the evidence from Preston’s foster mum Sandra Cooper who came into court to refute Jamie Varley’s suggestion that the reason Preston was pictured and filmed naked was because she had advised he should be allowed “free willy time.” She said it was categorically untrue and she would view it as a big safeguarding issue.

Tue, 21 Apr 2026 - 1min - 339 - The Southport Dance School: They Were Failed
In this episode Caroline and Liz discuss the detailed findings from an inquiry into the horrific attack on a dance school in Southport in 2024. They dissect Sir Adrian Fulford’s 700 page report in which he outlines the failures which allowed Axel Rudakubana to murder 3 littie girls and attack many more. From the agencies who didn’t comprehend the danger he posed, the staff who failed to have professional curiosity, the police who failed to arrest him two years earlier and his parents who knew he hoarded weapons - but failed to report him. In short the deaths of Alice, Elsie and Bebe were entirely preventable.

Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 31min - 337 - EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: The Nottingham Inquiry - “I am not going to stop till we get justice”
This is a preview of the latest Trial+ episode; The Nottingham Inquiry - “I am not going to stop till we get justice”. The full episode is available exclusively to Crime Desk subscribers. To find out more, visit https://plus.thecrimedesk.com/
In June 2023, a series of unthinkable attacks in Nottingham killed three people and left three others seriously injured.
Students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber were fatally stabbed as they walked home from a night out. The attacker then went on to kill school caretaker Ian Coates and steal his van, which was later used to drive into pedestrians in the city centre.
The man responsible, Valdo Calocane, had previously been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was later given an indefinite hospital order after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Before the public inquiry into the Nottingham Attacks is due to restart, Caroline and Ryan are joined by Grace’s father, Sanjoy Kumar. With his experience as a GP and a forensic medical examiner, he describes a series of missed opportunities across multiple agencies, including police and mental health services, arguing that warning signs were repeatedly overlooked.
He says that the Nottingham Attacks were totally avoidable- and is determined to get justice for his daughter.

Mon, 13 Apr 2026 - 24min - 336 - Driven to Death? - Who to Believe
In this episode Caroline and Nick have the FINAL episode of the podcast before the jury start to consider their verdict. And it was a dramatic spectacle of two legal titans battling it out in court. The prosecution say Chris Trybus was a wife-beater who lied that he knew nothing about his wife’s injuries, and his violence was the “dark cloud” Tarryn referred to in her suicide note. While the defence say this entire prosecution should serve as a warning to all men that they are at risk from false allegations, and this trial is agenda-driven and relies on a fallacy that women who say they are victims of domestic violence are always telling the truth.

In this episode Caroline and Nick have more of the evidence from Chris Trybus, the man on trial. He also said he was baffled to find out that during a romantic holiday in Scotland, Tarryn sent an email to a domestic violence advisor saying their relationship was “increasingly difficult” and she knew she had to leave him.

Tue, 17 Mar 2026 - 20min - 317 - EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: The Nottingham Inquiry - “I believe they were murdered"
In June 2023, a series of unthinkable attacks in Nottingham killed three people and left three others seriously injured.
Students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar were fatally stabbed as they walked home from a night out.
Now, a public inquiry is examining whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
In the first episode of this series, Caroline and Ryan speak to Emma Webber, Barnaby’s mother, about the first weeks of the Nottingham Inquiry. She describes the long fight by the families to secure the inquiry, the disturbing evidence emerging about missed opportunities to stop the attacker, and why she and the other families remain determined to push for accountability and meaningful change.
In the second episode of this series, Caroline speaks to former senior police officer David Gilbertson, to discuss what the inquiry has revealed so far; multiple assaults, accounts of stalking and an arrest warrant that went unexecuted for ten months.
We will continue to bring you updates on The Nottingham Inquiry over the coming weeks, over on Trial+

Tue, 10 Mar 2026 - 24min - 314 - Driven to Death? - Tarryn's Final Hours
In this episode we hear the devastating final words of Tarryn Baird in the hours and minutes before she took her own life. In a series of recordings played to the jury she can be heard asking for help with suicidal thoughts, but by the time police arrived at her home it was too late. We also heard another tape which the prosecution say is a secret recording of Tarryn being raped by her husband, Chris Trybus, but he says what’s on the tape is consensual sex. A number of the witnesses in court this week were openly emotional as they explained how they tried to help Tarryn.

In this episode Caroline and Nick have the evidence which the jury were told casts doubt on some of abuse Tarryn Baird says she was suffering at the hands of her husband. It’s been claimed in court that Chris Trybus was out of the country when some of the attacks took place, and that Tarryn bought a camera which she said he planted to spy on her. But we’ve also heard from her domestic violence advisor that she had bruises and she was too afraid to leave him.

Tue, 03 Mar 2026 - 24min - 312 - Driven to Death? - Do No Harm
In this episode Caroline and Nick have the medical evidence from Tarryn Baird’s GP who she saw or spoke to over 100 times in two years. The notes showed she reported repeated beatings, assaults with a rope and rape at the hands of her husband, Christopher Trybus. Time and time again she was urged to end the relationship, but she said she was terrified he would find her, and it was more dangerous to leave than to stay. He argues the allegations are lies, and during one month when he’d allegedly attacked her more than once, evidence proved he wasn’t even in the country.

Wed, 25 Feb 2026 - 8min - 310 - Driven To Death? - I Am Now Free
Was a woman driven to kill herself after being allegedly abused by her husband? That is the question at the centre of a landmark trial which Caroline and Nick will be covering in a new Trial UK series.
In this episode we hear that Tarryn Baird was 34 when she was found hanged in her garage - the prosecution say she killed herself because she was desperate to escape the violent, controlling abuse her husband subjected her to - and that makes him responsible for her death.
Christopher Trybus is facing charges of manslaughter, rape and coercive control. He denies the charges and says the allegations are false.
A jury will now decide.

Tue, 24 Feb 2026 - 22min - 309 - EXCLUSIVE TRAILER: Lucy Letby - Debunking Her Expert Panel
In February last year Lucy Letby’s new defence team told a press conference there was no medical evidence of air embolism in the babies she murdered and attacked. Professor Shoo Lee said he had studied all the literature to make his claim.
But today we hear his claim was wrong. And the literature to prove it was there all the time.
In this episode, Neonatologist Professor Paul Clark explains why what Lucy Letby’s expert panel said is wrong. Using old and new case studies, he debunks what is currently the cornerstone of Lucy Letby’s defence.

Tue, 24 Feb 2026 - 10min - 308 - The Trial of Social Media
In this episode Caroline and Liz get an insight from a lawyer with a ringside seat of the moment this week when Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg walked into a US courtroom to face the users of his platform who say using social media ruined their lives. They claim he knew the technology was addictive and it was part of his business model to make money at the expense of the mental health of a generation of young people. The case is likely to have huge implications in the UK so we also get the thoughts of Esther Ghey, who has campaigned tirelessly to better protect young people online, since the death of her daughter Brianna three years ago.

He sexually assaulted them and he filmed it - storing the videos and images in files at his home. He also targeted other children and adults too - using a secret camera to record his female friends when they used the bathroom in his home, and he filmed complete strangers through their windows as they undressed. His crimes have devastated hundreds of people who are asking if he could have been stopped earlier.

Fri, 12 Dec 2025 - 30min - 297 - Should Jury Trials Be Scrapped? - "Not in My Name"
In this third special episode about Government plans to scrap thousands of jury trials Caroline and Liz chat to a survivor of child sexual abuse. Vicki Crawford spent years believing she was culpable for the abuse she suffered at the hands of her sister's older boyfriend when she was just 14, and when she finally did seek justice decades later her experience was one of inefficiency, push back and delay. But despite this, she told us, the jury system is a fundamental right in a democratic system and should be retained at all costs. She also questioned if the Justice Secretary David Lammy had spoken to survivors of sexual violence before he tried to push through his reforms.

Guilty of harassment but Not Guilty of stalking. That’s the jury’s verdict today on Julia Wandelt’s “relentless” pursuit of the parents of Madeleine McCann. It means she could soon be released from prison and likely deported back to Poland. In this episode Caroline and Claire have all the reactions from the court, including how the McCanns said they hoped she can now get the care and support she needs. Plus we have an interview with Julia Wandelt’s father who told us how damaged she was after she was abused by her step-grandfather and he feels - like the McCanns - that he has also lost his daughter.

Today Caroline and Claire have the moment the police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann was accused of being in a state of “almost inertia”. The barrister for Karen Spragg said Julia Wandelt was treated like a “nutter” by the police when she said she might be Madeleine McCann, and they should have taken her DNA sooner. The jury were also told that people who were concerned about Madeleine’s abduction were not all “crack pots”.
