On August 19, 2022, The trumpet world lost a shining star with the passing of Dan Miller.
Everything about Dan was larger than life. He was a big guy with a big smile and a huge heart.
Dan had an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz trumpet that he was always willing to share with anyone who asked.
As a player, Dan had a massive sound that could fill up a room. Every note Dan played oozed with his passion for life and music.
But perhaps one of his greatest attributes was his skill as a teacher and mentor to young players.
And so I felt it was only fitting to do this tribute to a man who brightened the lives of so many trumpet players, both directly and indirectly.
In this special episode, I talk with three Trumpet Gurus who came into Dan’s life during different chapters. We start with Brad Goode, who was an early teacher of Dan’s and who helped fan the flame of Dan’s passion for jazz history. Next, I talk with Kenny Rampton, who spent years playing with Dan in New York and who became like a second brother. Then I talk with Dan’s young protege, Nathaniel Wiliford, about Dan’s teaching and mentoring. And finally, I am joined by Dan’s brother Dave Miller who puts Dan’s entire life into perspective.
So please join us in this celebration of the life and contributions of Dan Miller.

Chop problems. Just hearing those words sends shivers down the spine of amateur and professional trumpet players alike.
The thought of not being able to play the trumpet is something that creeps around in the deepest and darkest parts of our brains.
Most of the time, it is an irrational fear. But sometimes, the fear becomes very real.
The question is, is it possible to come back from chop problems?
Sometimes the answer is no. But often, the answer could be yes, but only if you know where to look for help.
This special compilation episode of The Trumpet Gurus Hang features six of my past guests who have not only overcome chop problems but have turned their temporary setbacks into a setup for greater success.
Check out Bryan Davis on the process of recovering from overuse and playing the hard way, Mike Sailors on reviving broken down chops due to improper technique, Kenny Robinson on his method of dealing with cold sores, Craig Kenney on recovering from Bell's Palsy, Rich Willey on the importance of having the right mental attitude, and Brad Goode on recovering from traumatic injury.

My guest for this episode is Adam MacBlane.
Adam is all about finding the right tool for the job. After receiving his Master of Music in Instrumental Performance degree, Adam shifted his focus from being behind the bell to the manufacturing and marketing side of the trumpet world. His deep dive into the art and science of trumpet design gave Adam a unique perspective that he uses in his company, Niche Trumpet, to help players find the right horn for their specific needs.
Check out what Adam has to say about the origin of Tommy The High Note Police, his start with P Mauriat, retail vs. manufacturing, fitting a player to the right horn, becoming a gear geek, manufacturing mentors, the evolution of Carol Brass, designing the new Michael Williams model trumpet, the impact of bell material on sound, his personal preference for horns, the advantage of a smaller mouthpiece, rim size and backbones, the advantage of keeping it simple, quieting the noise, why everyone should learn how to improvise, and so much more.
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

My guest for this episode is Craig Kenney.
Craig is a hidden gem. A world-class lead player, Craig’s career did not take the conventional route. Instead of forging a name on the road or in the studios, Craig chose to stay close to home in South Central Pennsylvania. A decision that placed him in the perfect spot to spend two decades as the lead player for the legendary Dave Stahl. But his recent experience rebuilding his chops after a bout with Bell’s Palsy is a masterclass in determination and resiliency that every player can benefit from.
Check out what Craig has to say about choosing to stay close to home, playing lead with Dave Stahl, important lessons for lead trumpet players, his inspirations, learning to play in the upper register, students and mouthpieces, being a teacher, Clarke Studies for upper register development, having a musical family, the importance of community bands, helping players feel comfortable, recovering from Bells Palsy, finding the silver lining, changes in attitude, dealing with uncertainty, his advice for recovering from a physical setback, and so much more!
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

Rashawn is an interesting dichotomy. As a member of the Dave Matthews Band, Rashawn regularly plays in front of thousands of fans, but at heart, he is a quiet soul. Rashawn is noted for his amazing high chops, effortlessly soaring well above double-high C, yet he doesn’t consider himself a lead player. And while his talents make him legendary, his island roots keep him humble.

To quote Dizzy Gillespie, Vaughn Nark is something special. Vaughn followed in his father’s footsteps and began playing trumpet at the age of 6. But when he first heard Dizzy, his world changed forever. Having spent nearly 20 years in The Airmen of Note, Vaughn created a name for himself with his pyrotechnic approach to improvisation. Vaughn is also a passionate educator and a bit of a jazz historian meaning he is always ready with a great story.
Check out what Vaughn has to say about why the trumpet is so special, his early influences, his first exposure to Dizzy Gillespie, his first meeting with Diz, why trumpet players need to stick together, honoring what's in your soul, studying the embouchures of the all-time greats, playing advice from Donald Reinhardt, why every embouchure is unique, how to increase your speed and accuracy, the importance of the teeth in playing, the history of jazz trumpet, and so much more.

Who's an educator, performing artist, TedX presenter, and TikTok star? My guest for this week's episode, Lexie Signor.
Lexie is truly one of a kind. She’s bold and brash both on and off the stage. But she is also highly intelligent and introspective. Lexie is a champion for equal rights on the bandstand and in the halls of higher education. Lexie is a passionate educator and a gifted player and composer. In fact, you’re listening to her work right now. And one thing’s for sure, when Lexie is around, the laughs abound.
So check out what Lexie has to say about her recent autism diagnosis, making sense of past experiences, how Aspberger's is her super-power, being a woman in a traditionally man's world, the importance of routine, the correlation between music and movement, how to build endurance, and so much more! So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

Whether you are a beginning trumpet player wanting to learn how to play the blues, or an experienced player wanting to learn how to make more green, you need to check out my guest for this episode, Aaron Washington
Aaron is a young man who has discovered a passion for the trumpet, jazz, and education. Like so many others, Aaron started down the road of traditional music education only to realize it’s limitations in reach. So Aaron hit the shed to develop his social media chops. Now his tutorials have racked up millions of views and which allows Aaron to help thousands of young players every week.
Check out what Aaron has to say about how being lazy led to a love for teaching, growing up around great music but not great musicians, building a social media presence, finding an audience, practicing the basics, the importance of finding a good teacher in music and marketing, the best platforms for musicians to explore, and so much more.
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

What happens when you hang with a talent that is so huge that the interview couldn't fit into one episode? Well, you split it into two so you don't miss out on anything!
This episode is Part 2 of my epic hang with Serafin Aguilar.
In the first half of our hang, Serafin gave you an in-depth look into his approach to the trumpet. In this, the second half, Serafin talks about how he put those skills to work to fulfill his childhood dream of touring with his trumpet hero Maynard Ferguson, his first time trading solos with The Boss, not backing down, being a cheerleader for other players, his involvement in the smash hit Havana, why he prefers playing live to playing in the studio, and so much more.
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

When you need a heavyweight trumpet player, who do you call? My guest for this special two-part episode, Serafin Aguilar
Serafin is a bull of a player. That’s why he’s called El Toro. His sound is big, his chops are strong and when he cuts loose you best get out of his way. But Serafin is also a very thoughtful and insightful man who is on a mission to be a positive force in the world. Serafin has played with the legendary Pancho Sanchez, the Zac Brown Band, and was able to fulfill his childhood dream of touring with trumpet giant Maynard Ferguson and forming a special relationship with The Boss.
In Part 1 of this hang, Serafin goes deep into paying attention to detail, taking care of business during the pandemic, why metal always wins, why trumpet playing is not for the faint of heart, working intuitively, learning how to problem-solve, the science of playing high notes, troubleshooting range problems, powerlifting, the carnivore diet, and so much more.
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!
