Dione Begay was born on March 28th, 1975. She was the eldest of six children and is described by her sister Christine as having a positive perspective on life and a witty sense of humor which is missed by her loved ones. Dione was beautiful, vibrant, outgoing, intelligent, and family-orientated. She was a mother of four daughters and had unique, close relationships with her entire family. Dione had several tribal connections via her parents, Debbie and Laffie Begay. Dione’s mother Debbie is part of the Dakotas ‘Yankton’ and ‘Arikara’ tribe, and her father, the ‘Navajo’ and ‘Dine’ tribe. As a Native American woman, Dione Begay is one of many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in New Mexico who is yet to receive justice, despite the brutality inflicted upon her and the obvious circumstances of the crime. Her family's pleas for help have also continued to be ignored. This is the story of Dione Begay Thomas.

On Saturday, October 11th, 2003, police were called to County Road 136B, 10 miles north of Espanola, following the discovery of a deceased female – 37-year-old Yvonne Martinez. Yvonne had been brutally murdered, and it was clear from the scene that a struggle had occurred. Despite the investigation identifying several suspects and many crucial pieces of evidence, the case has continued to remain unsolved for over 20 years.

A lot of people were talking about the June 15th, 2023 Supreme Court decision on Haaland vs Brackeen case which upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act. ICWA is a very important legislation that is related to the sovereignty of the First -Nations

Jackie and I were talking one day and she had expressed to me that she wanted to really dive into why the Indian Child Welfare Act was so important to upholding sovereignty for native tribes, and of course, I immediately agreed. I want to thank Jackie Moranty for researching and writing this script. But I also wanted to just set the context because this episode is a little bit different from most of the episodes that we do, but it is advocacy related and it does affect New Mexico.

I'm happy that ICWA was upheld by the Supreme Court. It was the right decision.

Evidence lost her son Richard Okorogheye in 2021. He went missing and the police response was so slow that by the time they found Richard, he had passed away. She is fighting for justice for Richard and for changes in the way that police handle missing person cases.

Now, oftentimes I will cover a case that has a resolution to it, when it makes sense, and when it is something that illustrates a legal complexity or a legal issue in New Mexico that I thought was either interesting or pertinent This case that we're gonna cover today is somewhat related to my baby brother Jacob Landin's case, and I'm not gonna go into that right now because I want to tell you the story of Mike Snyder. First, I want you to hear all about who he was and what happened to him. Before we get into the legal complexities and all of the things that may or may not be connected to my brother's case. But hopefully, I have your attention now., I don't want this to be diluting Mike Snyder's story in any way. The connection isn't really that deep. It just has to do with the law and the way it's being applied. But, Mike's story deserves to stand on its own. So I want to give him the due respect that he deserves, and his family deserves. 17-year-old Nettie Melendez had a big day ahead of her, and plans for her bright future. June 5th, 1989, was just the beginning: her high school graduation. But when her name was called onstage to get her diploma, Nettie was nowhere to be found. Her family started to panic. Nettie was responsible, and it was highly unlike her to miss such an important event. Their panic ended in tragedy when her body was recovered after a family search the next day. Today I’m going to tell you about one of the most significant events in New Mexico's history. The Pueblo Revolt. While the Pueblo Revolt didn’t permanently drive the Spanish out of New Mexico, it was successful in ending years of cruelty and exploitation of the Pueblo people by Spanish settlers. There had been several uprisings before the Revolt, but they had only succeeded in furthering the abuse. The Pueblo Revolt gave the Tribes autonomy and freedom.

Faith In Action. Part 7.

This will be the final episode on the murder of Father Reynaldo Rivera. There were several twists and turns over the first years of the investigation and the police were overwhelmed by all the information and the leads that took them from New Mexico to New York, Arizona, and Montana. Some leads made no sense and others seemed fairly solid, and while no arrests were made, you can see that it wasn’t because the police were letting the case slide. Every lead had to be followed and they were.

The entire city of Santa Fe was frenzied. Citizens of Santa Fe no longer felt safe. The peaceful, beautiful city surrounded by mountains, now seemed ominous. Even dangerous. No one went out at night anymore, and no one talked with strangers. Clergy from all over the state were on their guard. Many of them wouldn’t go out to minister unless they were sure where they were going and who they were talking to. Gone were the days of priests dropping everything to perform their ministry to strangers.

Editorials in the papers and news reports reflected the urgency that the people of Santa Fe felt around the death of Father Reynaldo. People demanded justice. The Archdiocese was also putting pressure on law enforcement to solve this crime. Police were investigating every lead, even those that seemed false or outlandish, and they felt like they were chasing their tails.

On August 5, 1982, Father Reynaldo left St. Francis Cathedral to meet a man who called himself Michael Carmello at the rest stop on La Bajada Hill. He was reported missing the following morning when he failed to return to the Cathedral.- An aerial search of the area was conducted on August 7, but Officer Eric Lucero and pilot Gary Aycock had flown toward Cochiti, along the highway. They were looking for Father Rivera’s car, not his body. They went towards Waldo where Father Geier told them that Michael Carmello’s grandfather had a ranch. Father Rivera’s body was located on the other side of the highway, north of where the aerial search was conducted.

For many years, it was suspected that their deaths could have all been linked in some way.I want to talk about the possibilities and the myths surrounding the connections between Father Reynaldo and these five other priests. Today we start a new mini-series focused on the unsolved murder of Father Reynald Rivera.
Father Reynaldo John Rivera answered the phone at St. Francis Cathedral church one night to hear a man on the other end asking him to meet him at a rest stop so he could perform Last Rites on the man’s grandfather who had had a heart attack. Father Rivera went to perform the sacrament and was found in the desert shot to death two days later. This murder has remained unsolved for 40 years.

On October 15, 2018, Angie Romero was fighting with her boyfriend. This was not new as they had their problems. The last time her family spoke with her was on 10/14/2018 despite their attempts to call and text Angie, there was no response. May 10th 1996 was a normal night for Leon Laureles he was getting ready for his midnight shift at the local Kroger. According to his family he left the house at 11:30pm which was normal for him when working this shift as he wanted to show up a little early to talk to his friends at work. Later that night eyewitnesses called the police regarding a car that was engulfed in flames on FM 2126 about 5 miles outside of Brownwood, Texas. When officers arrived they found Leon with a gunshot wound to his head. This case is 26 years old and remains unresolved to this day.

Today’s episode is a super important one. It deals with an indigenous woman who has been missing for over 2 years.

On March 24th, 2020, Pepita Redhair was dropped off at her boyfriend’s house by her mom, Anita. She had been dealing with violence in her relationship for a while. Friends and family had noticed she would have bruises on her body. Her family was worried about her. They were worried for her safety. Pepita’s mom, Anita King, told Pepita that she could come back home and stay in her childhood room. Pepita wasn’t having any of that though. She was an ambitious young woman and had worked hard to be independent. Despite her fears Anita said goodbye to Pepita, not knowing that this would be the last time she would see her daughter for many months. The lack of coverage/concern by law enforcement and the media in this case is shocking.

MMIW - Ranelle Bennett was a beautiful 33-year-old mother of two children. She brought her family joy with the stories she would tell. She is very loved and very missed by her family. She has had no contact with her family since June 15, 2021. She disappeared from her home in Hogback, New Mexico without a trace on that day. Hogback lies on the Navajo Reservation, about 12 miles from Shiprock. This is her story.

Today I am telling you the story of the hit-and-run murder of Marcos Baca. On the evening of November 13, 2021 Marcos Baca was returning from an awards ceremony and following his father home. Marcos was on his motorcycle when he was hit by a red light runner. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Marcos' family has been fighting for justice since that tragic night. Please help the family share Marcos' story to bring awareness and hopefully justice to this case. Thank you to the family of Marcos Baca for sharing his story.

I wanted to go back and look at something historical to take a mental health break from some of the more intense cases. I have always been interested in what happened in Taos, New Mexico in the 1800s.The struggle between the US government and it's drive to own what is now New Mexico led to many bloody battles. This was a particularly intense one. Today we are discussing the Taos Revolt.

Jeremiah Valencia had a terrible childhood, and nearly every adult in his life failed him in some way. There. It feels good to rip the bandage off and get that out of the way.
Sometimes bold, declarative statements like that can rub people the wrong way — they tend to think you’re judging people too harshly. “Judge not,” they say. “Walk a mile in their shoes,” they say. If you know me, you know I’ve run a marathon in those shoes, listeners.
“Surely there must have been a grandparent or uncle or someone who didn’t fail Jeremiah Valencia, right?” A 13 year-old boy is dead. The fact alone means nobody is innocent, and our first, reflexive, knee-jerk reaction should not be one of aversion and defensive posturing.
Guilt is good.
We should feel guilty.
It’s our first step toward acknowledging that there’s something we could have done better for Jeremiah Valencia.
There’s an old Buddhist passage that has been translated and interpreted with a different meaning than the original, but it is no less profound. Paraphrasing, it goes “Only three things cannot remain long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”
In the case of Jeremiah Valencia, nobody has the moral high ground to say they did everything they could, so I’ll say it again because it’s the truth.
Nearly every adult in Jeremiah Valencia’s life failed him in some way, and it cost him his life.
Our challenge now, as a community, is to accept our share of the blame and learn from it, so it never happens again. If Jeremiah’s story can teach us how to do that, then his death will not have been in vain.

That might have been true for a while, but eventually, all that illusion would be shattered.
