This week on Miami Vice: Valerie Gordon is back! Sadly, it's due to very unpleasant circumstances. Her childhood best friend Yvonne (CCH Pounder) is struggling with addiction and dealing with a violent dealer named Swain. Valerie flies into Miami after receiving a worrisome call from her Goddaughter, Lynette, and tries to help out Yvonne, but, things only unravel more once Swain is not content with taking Yvonne's money and dealing with her late payments. He suggests something very sinister, her daughter, which Yvonne agrees to. Yvonne ends up dead and Lynette is refusing to ID Swain or talk to anyone about what happened, which tickles Sonny's Spidey senses. Switek descends back into gambling, while Rico, the only happy person in this epsiode - albeit momentarily - can't see the forest through the trees because he's just so excited to have Valerie back. As the title of the episode suggests, will it be too late for them?

This week on Miami Vice: How do you do, fellow kids? In this spinoff attempt, Joey is back with some other "kids" (actors in their late 20s and early 30s) as part of the "Young Criminals Unit" to infiltrate the shady world of a professor and his mysteriously dying students. These deaths have him and a super strong drug in common, and it's up to the newcomers to stop him before it's too late. Production quality and character writing (um, big bomb dropped about Crockett is abandoned quickly) be damned, let's try and spin Miami Vice off into the 90s.

Suprise, surprise, things do not go well! We learn more about Miracle Man's motives to keep the streets of Miami clean, as the news crew led by Eric Terry (Zach Grenier) stoop to new lows in their quest to get the footage they want.

His son gets into some trouble, despite being told he is in real estate wink, and wants to help out his son but, unfortunately is too late. Lombard figures it's not too late to help Tommy, his grandson. Sal's widow and Tommy's mom doesn't want him near Tommy, so Lombard gets creative and honestly, it's very sweet seeing Lombard in Nonno mode. How far will Lombard be willing to go to avenge his son and square things up with the Librizzis?

(9:53) Recap

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are trying to bust a local player named Tommy, until his deal gets cuts short by a warning from an ice cream truck and they flee, leaving Vice in the lurch about Tommy's new source. They get news that their budgets are being cut by Captain Highsmith, who is making a run for County Supervisor, and naturally are pissed off. They try to get close to an NY dealer, Reginald Hawkins, but one of his goons, gets in the way, and then Crockett and Tubbs are whisked away by a group of suits. The suits are part of a shadowy network of vigilante cops who are tired of seeing criminals through the cracks and who have seen the shortcomings first hand. As the group tries to close in on the new source that Vice is after - Escalante - we see the lines get more and more blurred. When does the pursuit of justice cross into criminal behaviour itself and what happens when you're in too deep to get out?

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are introduced to the world of underground art dealing when a big deal goes bust and they "hot" goods Vice finds turns out to be paintings. The main piece of the group is missing and Det. Whitehead from the NYPD (Michael Chiklis) is in Miami to help locate the art by prepping Crockett and Tubbs on how to penetrate the art world and we get some retconning of Tubbs from Season One, but also some great outfits so it all works out. The Scianti family - known for other types of deals - are involved and run a gallery where Tubbs goes under as a art history professor/connoisseur/dealer with the family to get closer. Joey and Julia, the children, are carrying on the family business by making deals for Joey and running the gallery for Julia and they also butt heads over what the future holds for the main piece of art their dad stole years ago and the drama it will bring as Whitehead, Vice and the Sciantis fight over it.

The lawyer, Sam Boyle and his protegé, Lisa Madsen (Amanda Pummer) are working for Enriquez as Vice tries to get closer, and it takes a dead child to make Lisa questions her loyalty. Her world comes crashing down as Vice closes in on Enriquez and Boyle - whose world is also closing in around him as he's caught stealing from Frank Romano (Tony Sirico), while Enriquez keeps servings looks.

This week on Miami Vice: Tubbs is trying to make a deal with a bigwig crack dealer named Gallego when Gallego gets ripped off for cash and a suitcase that he almost gave up his life to protect... questions? What's in the suitcase? And why were the robbers wearing prosthetics and stage makeup? This leads back to a once reformed ex-con who runs a theatre for ex-cons called Mi Vida Loca (no relation to the movie) as a way to give them a safe form of expression. Crockett knows the talent Mikey has and can't understand why he gave up so much and burned so many bridges along the way, and now he's at risk of throwing his whole life away, and of those that love him, for Gallego's suitcase. This week on Miami Vice: Guest stars galore! Don Johnson directs his ex-wife - and at this time, future ex-wife again and mother of his child in this episode, as Melanie Griffith plays a secretive businesswoman who has a role to play in the death of a dirty businessman and a beautiful escort (Vanity) and who has a long-standing relationship with an even bigger businessman, played by George Takei. Crockett once again falls for someone out of his world, but this time, it's a lot more surprising when connections are made (and exposed in a live television interview). Was Christine von Marburg the original SHE-E-O/Girlboss? Or the inspiration for Heidi Fleiss? Maybe both?

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs assist rookie cops (Guest Stars: Lou Diamond Phillips and Viggo Mortensen) to execute a search warrant, which turns out to be a trap and it's becoming a pattern in South Florida. Tubbs is irate that no one seems to take the leak of private information and its deadly consequences seriously, and partners up with a Special Investigations Agent, with a girlfriend working the Dept of Justice (Annette Bening in her second role ever!) who has a plan for him to get his retirement money way quicker, after he gets arrested trying to get his money from the Credit Union. The surviving rookie cop, Bobby, is following Tubbs closely after the botched search warrant that killed his partner as Tubbs seems to alienate the rest of the Vice team that tries to help, like Switek and Crockett. The FBI warns Crockett that Giulinni, the Vegas mafioso who was also in One Eyed Jack (Michael Mann casting!) - is not pleased with them or their affiliation with Guzman but, Crockett brushes it off. Crockett sympathizes with cop who's too far under that he seems to have not factored his wife into the equation of trying to get his sex worker girlfriend off the streets but, despite Crockett's attempts at helping, this story has played out on Miami Vice before, and will again, to sad results. Trudy and Gina absolutely SLAY their street outfits as they play along to try and get Carla to play along with their ruse since she's naturally hesitant about working with cops, unless it's her married boyfriend - of course. This week on Miami Vice: In this Don Johnson-helmed episode, one of Crockett's friends from his time in Vietnam coms to Miami with a lead on an explosive story regarding the bad smack that's been circulating around Miami. They get closer to the lead when they realize it leads back to their time in Vietnam when Stone (Balaban) discovered heroin in the bodybags of deceased soldiers. Guest stars galore! Iman! Bob Balaban! Patti D'Arbanville! And while we explore the darker themes of the damage the Vietnam war had on the American generation who were drafted and served and how they were ignored and spat on when they returned, we also get to rock out to a Doors-centric soundtrack and Crockett's impeccable style this episode.

This week on Miami Vice: Gina's housekeeper is raped at her apartment by a stereotypical rich Miami playboy with connections, and Gina is determined to get justice despite all the obstacles in her way while the victim deals with his abuse and continued intimidation and her familial obligations in Haiti. A very depressing episode and tough topics are covered so please note a trigger warning of rape for the entire episode. I do find some comic relief in Arroyo's (Joaquim De Almeida) attitude and his love of gold jewelry, a "sweet" drug bust that goes bust and TIL I learned there are different DeBarges, and the one performing in this episode (El DeBarge) is not allegedly the baby father of Janet Jackson's secret child who was rumoured to have been raised by Rebbie.

TW: Rape, abuse

This week on Miami Vice: An old CIA friend of Castillo's, who was presumed dead, comes to Miami as he and his ex-KGB wife are running from her old agency and Castillo proves his honour and loyalty, adhering to the principles of the Samurai in this EJO-directed episode! Guest star Dean Stockwell stars as the former "Company" man in question in this very Cold War episode and I learn the meaning of Pinko only just now!

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs oversee the arrival and subsequent burial of a notorious criminal Legba (Clarence Williams III) only to realize at the funeral that he may be not as dead as they think! Zombie or Romeo and Juliet-style fakeout? They dig deeper into his history that includes human smuggling, money laundering, corruption and moonlighting as a Voodoo Priest, the latter causing Tubbs to get in way over his head. Other topics include Michael Mann casting so good I didn't even notice, a Forrest Gump connection, an old CanCon family staple with a way bigger guest star than I ever would have thought and some depressing Viced Tea (I'm sorry, trust me, not by choice!)

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs work with busted brothel owner (Miles Davis!) to infiltrate the world of a powerful drug dealer named Silva (Jose Lopez) who has a sick obsession with one of his former working girls. Things get darker the deeper they get, not only for them but for the poor girl, Rosella (Ely Pouget) who is dealing with a serious drug problem - her only means of escape.

TW: sexual abuse, assault, trauma, drug abuse.

Please note: This episode is very dark, not recommended if you have kids around while listening!

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett reconnects with an old friend with some questionable connections while he and Tubbs try to protect a young mother fleeing not only an abusive husband but a hit when she inadvertently takes some very incriminating documents. Guest stars: James Remar, Nathan Lane and Frankie Valli. Annie returns, bright and colourful as always without her husband Noogie, who is "out of town" as she connects with the young mother (esthr Balint). We discuss bar etiquette, the importance of financial independence and more!

Edit: I had this whole part about Esther Balint that I totally skipped during recording sorry! Her father was the founder of the Squat Theatre Troupe in NYC and was friends and worked with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jim Jarmusch!

This week on Miami Vice: We take a break from recaps and get into some Viced Tea! Our first-ever episode of Viced Tea gets into the story of Philip Michael Thomas' work with the Psychic Friends Network (later Access Resources, later Traffix, Inc.) from 1994 to 1997 and the messiness at the time of his tenure after he was replaced by Miss Cleo! Learn more about who Miss Cleo was, how the "psychic" hotlines got into hot water, the GTA: Vice City connection, what happened after he exited, and Philip Michael Thomas' vegan cookbook!

Like Viced Tea? Feel free to suggest topics about the Miami Vice stars that deserve a standalone episode. We will be back next Friday for our regular programming and recapping S02 E05: The Dutch Oven

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are investigating a drug dealer who is thought to have disappeared and is helped by an eccentric ex-cop Hank Weldon (Bruce McGill) who isn't all there but, seems to know a lot about the guys they're going after. Bring some tissues as I cry my eyes out and talk about mental health treatment and how it lacked then and now, loyalty to one's partner, more about Joel Surnow (the last episode he appears to be credited on :( and the origins of 24 being planted here (Dennis Hopper almost played Hank Weldon, as much as I love Dennis I think Bruce had the subtlety and heart to take this episode further. Some spicy content about Little Richard in Viced Tea (45:08), be warned!

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs dig into the world of Santeria with the help of a Priestess (guest star Eartha Kitt) during their investigation of the mysterious death of two cops outside of their jurisdiction. Crockett has his own problems when his Spyder gets taken back into police custody with plans to take it to auction.

EDIT: I totally missed my notes on Eartha Kitt, sorry! Not only was she Catwoman, but after speaking up against the Vietnam War at a White House dinner and bringing Ladybird Johnson to tears, she was effectively blackballed in the States and worked abroad. She allowed parts of the dossier the CIA had compiled against her to be published in 1975, badass lady. She also did a ton of great charity work! She also looks amazing in her Catwoman costume

This week on Miami Vice: We wrap up season one with Dennis Farina returning as Lombard, John Santucci returning after 8 episodes to play a different character (love that Michael Mann loyalty), and Ned Eisenberg as the son of a late Mafioso. Crockett and Tubbs have to protect Lombard, who is very reluctant to testify against the Labrizzi family even as he is backed into a corner with immunity, which means he can't plead the Fifth, but can be held in contempt of Court. We talk about the magic of crushed garlic, not garlic powder, what is Seven Card Stud poker for those of us who grew up watching celebrities play Texas Hold 'Em on TV and the price we all pay for what we feel is morally right.

Programming Note: Season 2 of Vice and Easy will be back in August! Thanks for listening and catch up with old episodes in the catalog and then we are off to meet Sonny and Rico in New York with the Season 2 premiere.

This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are trying to bust an arms dealer but things get more complaicated when Crockett recognizes one of his henchman, an ATF agent who used to work with him on Vice. Guest starring: William Russ (Cory Matthews' dad) and Al Israel (Scarface) whose paperwork says he's 27?!?!?!?! This is a very emotionally poignant episode and I'm surprised it wasn't the season finale!
Apologies for the editing on this episode.

Trigger warnings: homophobia, suicide

Crockett struggles with work-life balance as his romance with Brenda (guest star Kim Greist from Manhunter) gets hotter. Gina learns some hard life lessons (don't date your co-workers!), Tubbs must deal with a distracted partner and Izzy has a new shoe hustle (including clogs?)
