- 53 - The Toots Holzheimer Yarn
In the 1960s, when the roads of Cape York were little more than rough dirt tracks, Toots Holzheimer was a pioneer behind the wheel of a truck, travelling unforgiving terrain and some of the most isolated country in Australia
Standing just five feet tall, Toots was a mother of ten who defied expectations to become one of Australia’s most legendary truck drivers. With no formal training and a fierce determination to succeed, she tackled treacherous creek crossings, endless stretches of bulldust and roads that could leave even the most experienced drivers stranded for days.
But Toots’ remarkable journey began long before she ever climbed behind the wheel. From a childhood marked by tragedy to a turbulent family life filled with heartbreak and hardship, her story is one of extraordinary resilience, courage and an unwavering refusal to back down.
It’s a yarn of adventure, adversity and one remarkable Aussie woman who proved that sometimes the most important people in history are the ones you have never heard of.
This episode was inspired by Toots: Woman in a Man’s World, written by Toots’ daughter, Donna Vawdrey. Get your copy here: https://toots-thebook.com.au/

Thu, 22 Oct 2026 - 30min - 51 - The Phar Lap Yarn
From humble beginnings in New Zealand to becoming one of the most legendary racehorses in Australian history, Phar Lap’s story is one of triumph, determination, and mystery.
Bought for a bargain price and initially dismissed as an awkward, unimpressive horse, Phar Lap would go on to capture the hearts of a nation during the darkest days of the Great Depression. But behind his incredible rise to fame was a story filled with extraordinary victories, enormous gambling fortunes, death threats, and even an assassination attempt.
This week we tell the unbelievable true story of the horse that became an Australian icon, and the mystery that continues to surround his legend nearly a century later.

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 30min - 49 - The Burke And Wills Yarn
In 1860, Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills set off on one of the most ambitious expeditions in Australian history — to cross the continent from south to north through country largely unknown to Europeans.
Backed by big money, loaded with supplies and joined by a colourful crew of explorers, horses and camels, the expedition left Melbourne to enormous fanfare. But as they pushed deeper into the Australian interior, impatience, brutal conditions and a string of questionable decisions began to turn the adventure into something far more dangerous.
It’s a yarn of exploration, survival, bad luck and decisions that would go down in Australian history — the incredible story of Burke and Wills.

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 50min - 45 - The Inland Hotel Massacre
In August 1983, a quiet night at the Inland Hotel in the Northern Territory took a horrifying and unexpected turn. At the centre of it all was truck driver Douglas Crabbe, a man whose actions that night would become part of one of Australia’s most infamous criminal cases. This week on Wouldn’t Read About It, we revisit the events leading up to the Inland Hotel Massacre, what unfolded that night, and the extraordinary story that followed.

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 36min - 43 - September 11 - The James Dorney Yarn
It started like any other Tuesday morning in New York City. Australian James Dorney arrived at work, took the elevator high above Manhattan and settled in for the day. Then, everything changed.
Within minutes, James found himself trapped inside the unfolding horror of September 11 — surrounded by smoke, chaos and thousands of people desperately trying to escape. What followed was a race down the World Trade Center, where a handful of decisions would ultimately mean the difference between life and death.
This is the extraordinary true story of James Dorney — the Australian who walked into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001… and somehow walked back out.

In March 1999, convicted armed robber John Killick pulled off one of the most outrageous prison escapes in Australian history, with a little help from his new found lover of only several months. Russian librarian Lucy Dudko had hatched a daring plan to get Killick out of Sydney’s maximum-security Silverwater prison, using an escape method so audacious that nobody saw it coming - until they did. What followed was a dramatic getaway, 45 days on the run and one of the wildest love stories in Australian criminal history.

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 43min - 38 - Better Late Than Never - The Cliff Young Yarn
In 1983, ultramarathon runners from Australia and across the globe set their sights on the inaugural Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Ultra Marathon - an 875 kilometre race from Westfield in Parramatta, NSW to Westfield in Doncaster, Victoria. At the time this was seen as one of the hardest races in the world, a feat that would push the most elite endurance athletes in the world to breaking point - or so we thought.
Enter Cliff Young, a 61 year old farmer from Beech Forest, Victoria. Cliff got wind of the race through mention of friends and couldn't help but think it sounded oddly similar to what he did every day on the farm rounding up sheep. So, he decided he'd give it a good old fashioned crack. Unbeknownst to him, he would not only become famous for the Cliff Young Shuffle - he'd defy knowledge and belief, and inspire a nation to believe anything is possible.

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 21min - 36 - The Shark Arm Murder Yarn
On Anzac Day 1935 in the popular beachside suburb of Coogee, the Sydney locals were commemorating the Anzacs and making the most of another glorious Autumns day. Beach aquariums were the in thing at the time, and Albert Hobson had managed to catch and deliver a four metre long tiger shark as the new popular attraction.
When the shark began to act strange, almost as though it was going to die, onlookers became intrigued and anticipation started to grow. What happened next is one of the most bizarre and mysterious yarns that to this day, still doesn't have a definitive answer as to what actually happened, and why the shark vomited up a human arm.

Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 30min - 34 - Where Is Harold Holt?
In Portsea Victoria on December 17 1967, what was supposed to be a run of the mill summertime swim with family friends became an international news story that is still surrounded by massive question marks 59 years later.
Then Prime Minister of Australia Harold Holt was a boisterous and charismatic leader of the country, known and loved for his Aussie pride and also for his active lifestyle. When it came to swimming in the ocean, many have described him as a man of the sea - so why is it that he disappeared on a routine swim, in a spot he was familiar with? If the ocean was rough, why did he go out? And why were there so few eye witnesses, who's reports were so quickly confirmed and believed?
And most importantly - what really happened to Harold Holt? (and why is there a swimming pool named after him...suss)

Tue, 21 Jul 2026 - 22min - 30 - Zeljko Ranogajec - Australia's Keno King (feat. The Cuzzies!)
The Cuzzie's are in the house!!! Our first guest ep features Trangie's two most eligible bachelors, Matt and Oli Ferrari (@thecuzzies11 on Instagra ladies). After we get to know the boys, we delve into one of Australia's greatest unknown billionaires - Zeljko Ranogajec.
Zeljko Ranogajec wasn't a typical 19 year old - while most uni starters were interested in probabilities of finding the cheapest pub to drink at and the most exciting stories to tell the next morning, Zeljko was running probabilities in his head of how to beat the system that was providing cheap thrills - the casino and eventually, the entire concept of gambling.
This is an incredible and equally mysterious story of how a 19 year old with $200 in his pocket created one of the world's largest gambling syndicates, a $1billion+ net worth and an answer to the question - can you beat the system?

Tue, 14 Jul 2026 - 28min - 28 - Clare Wibson - The Pilliga Princess Yarn
***For those here purely for thePilliga Princess story- skip to 5:50. For our regulars, enjoy :)
In the late 80s and 90s, Clare Wibson, along with a shopping trolley full of her belongings, roamed the 120km stretch of the Newell Highway running between Coonabarabran and Narrabri in Northwestern NSW.
Information on Clare's life prior to this period is scarce at best, and the reason for her presence on the road is a mystery. However, after she was tragically struck down by a southbound truck on the 20th March 1993, many truckers and unknowing travellers alike report seeing the same thing - a woman with blinding white hair pushing a shopping trolley down the highway.
The Pilliga Scrub in Northwestern NSW has a long history of mysterious encounters and horrifying spiritual experiences, and maybe none more notorious than Clare's, as she is now known...as the Pilliga Princess.

Tue, 07 Jul 2026 - 35min - 26 - The Fall At Victoria Falls
On New Years Eve of 2011, 22-year old Perth girl Erin Langworthy was having the adventure trip of her lifetime in Southern Africa. Young, wild and care free, Erin was making the most of her youth and creating a trip to remember. It certainly was - but not for the reasons she'd imagined.
Towering 111m above the Zambezi River is the Victoria Falls Bridge, also home to one of the worlds most thrilling and scenic bungee jumps. Unlike most people who participated in the jump, Erin didn't return to the bridge after taking the leap - instead crossing the border from Zimbabwe to Zambia, ending up in hospital with life threatening injuries...

In this episode, we delve in to the 27 years of Steven Bradbury's life before the famed moment - the dedication, sacrifice and near death experiences that will ultimately change your perception of the man. His luck didn't just come in the minutes of the 2002 Olympic Speed Skating Final - it was created through years and years (and years) of gruelling passion towards a sport that he put on the Australian map.

Tue, 16 Jun 2026 - 32min - 20 - 91 Days In The Abyss - The Douglas Mawson Yarn
You may have been through Mawson, the suburb of Canberra, gazed upon Mount Mawson in TAS or maybe even driven down Douglas Mawson Drive in Dubbo NSW (to name a few). But what you may not know is the incredible yarn of Sir Douglas Mawson and his expedition to Antarctica in 1912-13, and why he has his name honoured in so much Australian culture.
Pre WW1, Mawson and a small crew set out on an expedition across the treacherous icy wasteland of Antarctica for a scientific research mission. After a relatively pleasant start the trip quickly took a turn in what would become one of the most hectic stories of mental fortitude and survival you'll ever hear, despite all the luck falling against the odds of making it out of the unexplored land alive. After a quick anecdote about the history of Chinese restaurants in regional Australia and Lottie's disgust for the movie 'Dude, Where's My Car?', we delve into the mystery shrouded story of Ricky Megee.
In 2006, Ricky was found in "one of the most isolated parts of Australia" - the Birrindudu Cattle Station (500km southwest of Katherine) sheltering under a water trough, with the appearance of a skeleton. After receiving treatment at the Royal Darwin Hospital, Ricky's recount of how he ended up is a yarn that put's Tom Hanks' 'Castaway' to shame, but due to his colourful past, one question remains - do you believe him?
