I'll be honest. I've always struggled with getting my head around all things Yes, finding much of their discography overly complex and pretentious ... fidgety-on-purpose ear-ache-my-eye kinda stuff. However, after much training and coaxing from my brother who absolutely adores the band, I have been able to extract an hour and half of their material that sits comfortably in my best-of prog rock file. Welcome to our AN INTRODUCTION TO ... series where we provide a playlist that is representative of the sub-genre in question. This first episode we focus on the early years of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), specifically 1979 thru 1981 (part 2 covering '82-'84 to follow). Here we've selected songs that we think encapsulate the youthfull energy that came to be representative of the NWOBHM. Additionally, we've enlisted the one-song-per-band rule, hence, some of the bigger bands not overtaking the playlist. Welcome to 1986 when extreme metal flexed its muscles, pushing aside all other forms of heavy into the background. Some would argue that it just may be the greatest year in heavy music history given the preponderance of classic releases. Thrash metal was the prime mover with Slayer's unfathomable Reign In Blood leading the way. Hardcore punk also made some noise with Final Conflict's Ashes To Ashes as its ringleader (an album I consider to be the greatest record of the sub-genre ever issued). Cryptic Slaughter and The Accused represent the crossover/speedcore front, while Agnostic Front carry the NYHC banner.
