If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9

As I was driving in my car this week and listening to some worship on the radio, the song Mercy came on by the group Bethel.

As she sang the lyric was “My past embraced. My sins forgiven.” This suddenly struck a chord with me.

I have a lot of really nasty things in my past, just like I’m sure most of you do.

I try to ignore it, bury it, and even pretend it doesn’t exist. But if you ignore your past instead of embracing it, you could be robbing God of his glory.

We need to embrace our past, no matter how ugly, and lean on God our father who took all of those ugly experiences and totally forgave us and showed us mercy.

He wiped all of the bad things away, so even if it hurts we HAVE to embrace what we’ve come through and what we’ve been rescued from to truly give God the glory and the credit he deserves for showing such grace and mercy to us.

I know I did nothing to deserve a second chance, but his pure love caused him to extend it to me anyway.

Prayer: Father THANK YOU for making me a new creation. Thank you for showing me grace and rescuing me from the sins of my past. I’m so grateful to have been forgiven and adopted into your family as your child. Please help me to spread the word of the glorious miracle of your forgiveness and love and never to be ashamed of my beginnings. May my testimony bring you all the glory! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It sounds kind of silly, but isn’t it true? Sometimes we let our words come out without truly thinking about them.

I know I’m not the best communicator, and sometimes I say things that are taken the complete opposite way that I meant them.

We should be extra careful with the words we speak because our words create change.

God created us with his breath and his words, and we are made in his likeness.

We, too, create the atmosphere with our words. Strive to speak uplifting positive things and that is what you will begin to reap.

Prayer: God please help me to guard my tongue. I want to be a person that lifts up and speaks life into people and situations, not the opposite. Help me to bring about positive changes by my words. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We hear this a lot in modern day culture.

“Be present”.

But what does that mean?

To be present means to live in the moment.

Yes it is okay to plan for the future, but don’t worry and be anxious about things you cannot control.

Often we worry about things and cause ourselves much stress over things that never even come to pass!

I think that’s why God reminds us here to be present.

Don’t worry about tomorrow, for we aren’t even promised a tomorrow.

Just stay present and do what good you can do for today.

Another side of the “Be present” coin is not to live in the past.

I have a very soiled and broken section of my past that has been very hard to forgive and leave behind.

Things I’ve done continue to resurface in my mind and through people who knew me when I was in the world.

The bible says in Psalm 103:12 that God has removed our sins from us as far as the East is from the West.

God doesn’t hold our past against us anymore, so we shouldn’t continue to punish ourselves either.

Prayer: God thank you for this reminder in your word to be present and not worry about tomorrow. Thank you also for your love and forgiveness and help me to follow your example and forgive myself and not live in the past. Help me to truly soak up and be present in each moment that I’m blessed to have, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Have you ever heard the saying “I have a lot on my plate”?

People usually say this meaning that they are very busy or have a lot of things to do. But have you ever thought about it like this; plates come in many sizes and shapes.

Comparison is the thief of joy. We are all a part of the body of Christ, but all body parts look and function very differently, don’t they?

We are the same in that we all have different functions and different portions that we can handle. Some people may have very large plates, serving platters even.

They may be constantly on the go, constantly praying and doing good works, and you may see their deeds and feel inadequate by comparison.

However, if your own plate is much smaller but you’re still filling it up, do not look down on the allotment you have been given.

God wants you to be obedient to what he has asked of you, not to try to achieve the exact same things that another person has accomplished.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for using me and speaking to me and filling my plate with tasks that are perfectly made for me and my abilities. Help me to do all that you have asked of me with a cheerful heart and help me to never compare myself to others, but to strive to be the best ‘me’ that I can be each and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

OUCH.

This scripture can be so simple and so difficult all at once!

God says if we love him, we must also love our brother and sister.

He’s not talking about the family tree here, but he’s talking about our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sometimes people hurt us, and we don’t want to love those people who caused us pain. God says love them anyway.

I have found that when someone causes me great pain, the best way I can show them love is to pray for them.

To truly pray for their health, wellbeing, success, etc.

After you put this into practice, I think you’ll find that God’s love will help fill your heart, so you can continue to pour it out in prayer and maybe eventually in person.

Some people are easy to love, like our friends and family, and we should go out of our way to love and cherish them also.


Some people just need a hand sometimes, and we can help by donating food to a food bank, cleaning an elderly persons yard, etc.

Do these acts of love and God will surely bless you for it!

PRAYER: God help me to find joy in loving everyone around me. I pray that you would fill my heart to overflowing and help me to be a beacon of your love for my friends, family, neighbors, and even my enemies. God give me the strength and bless me in showing love to everyone, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sometimes to do the right thing or the good thing is hard.

We are bound by our flesh, after all, right?

Wrong. It can be hard when we are temped to gossip to abstain and do the right thing.

We should always seek to be peacemakers and not cause strife among our people.

It is very hard, especially when you’ve been hurt by someone, to NOT jump on the bandwagon and criticize them or air their dirty laundry.

After all, they deserve it right?

They brought this on themselves.

WRONG.

God commands us to keep our tongue away from evil and deceitful speech, including gossiping.

We should not use our mouths to tear people down but find ways to use your words to build people up!

Be an encouragement to others.

Compliment their strong points instead of pointing out their shortcomings.

I promise you, God will bring many blessings to you if you make that effort to keep your words working FOR the kingdom instead of tearing people down.

Prayer: God help me to use my words for GOOD! Please help me to recognize when conversations turn negative and help me to be the factor that shifts it back to the positive. Thank you for guiding us and using us for your Glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Its probably nothing new to you as a believer that our greatest commandment is love.

But does it come easy?

Not always. Some people are easy to love, which I am thankful for.

They always help out, they don’t betray our trust, they are the friend that sticks closer than a brother. But others, oh Jesus!

They test us at every turn!

They betray our trust, they grate on our nerves, and they are a challenge.

But Lord, I’m thankful for these people also.

They bring out something rich and deep within us and brighten our character to make us more Christlike.

God tells us in this scripture that if we give our bodies over to hardship, but we don’t have LOVE, we gain nothing from it.

I don’t know about you, but when I labor I want it to mean something!

To produce something fruitful in my life and the lives of others.

Just try to do all things through the lens of LOVE.

Love others and help them, just as Christ loves us.

Love can be the lens that you use to judge all other things by.

If you love yourself, you won’t feed your body harmful things.

If you love your neighbor, you won’t sleep with his wife or steal from him.

Love always leads to the high road.

Prayer: God help me to love in all that I do. Help me to love myself but also to love everyone I encounter today. Please guide me when the going gets tough, and help me to remember that sometimes I’m not so easy to love either, yet your love never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sometimes in our Christian walk we encounter troubles.

We encounter situations and feelings that we may not naturally know the answer to or how to get through them.

In times like these I encourage you to scour God’s word for answers.

There are many ways to search the Bible; on the internet, using concordances, asking your friends and family their favorite scriptures on the subjects you’re looking for, etc.

If you find yourself feeling lost, turn back to God’s written word for guidance and comfort.

Most Bibles even have a glossary in the back where you can look up scriptures related to certain topics.

Once you have your scripture guideposts, write them and hang them in places that you will be reminded often.

I like to put mine on my bathroom mirror where I get ready for the day and in my planner that I use multiple times a day.

Having a frequent reminder of what God has to say about these situations you are going through will help you to feel like you are not alone and God is working on your problems to turn them around for your good.

Prayer: God THANK YOU for your word! When I don’t know if I can hear your voice in the moment, I always have your scriptures to turn to for comfort and guidance. Lord help me to lock your words away in my heart so that when I need them the most, they’ll come to the surface. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

On my drive to work I don’t usually encounter a whole lot of traffic.

I drive through the woods watching the sunlight filter through the trees in the most beautiful patterns and I often thank God for his creation.

One day, I drove past a wooded area of tall, straight, limbless pine trees and I noticed right smack in the middle is a twisty oak tree.

This tree’s branches twist and turn into all directions, and it definitely didn’t follow the pattern of the other trees.

Seeing this tree reminded me that in a world of evil and unbelief, we cannot be afraid to stand out and be who God created us to be.

We must soak up the son and then tell the whole world of his loving kindness by being set apart.

PRAYER: God help me to be different from the world and not to be afraid to stand out. You made me unique and set apart for a reason and I pray that fear wouldn’t hold me back from spreading your love to those around me. Help me to remember that wide is the path to destruction but narrow is the gate that we should enter into righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We ask and pray for God’s best, and sometimes that means a delay or that he has something even better than we imagined planned for us.

Faith is the belief in things unseen, and if you continue to keep the faith, God is so infinitely good he will answer you in his perfect timing in order to work it out for your best.

Prayer: God help me to be patient when I ask things of you. Help me to wait patiently on you as you work everything out perfectly for my best interest. I have faith that you hear and will answer me in your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Why do you think in the scripture so many times God asks us to defend the fatherless and help the widows and orphans?

I think it’s because often, they can’t defend themselves.

God wants us to help those who can’t help themselves.

Widows, elders, orphans, fatherless….. they are all just as precious in his sight as the next person.

If they need help we should show them love and stand up for them.

Are you familiar with the Lorax?

The Dr. Seuss character who spoke up for the trees?

He stood up for the trees because they couldn’t stand up and speak for themselves.

This is a very biblical principle!

Any time you see an injustice, it is your duty to stand up and seek justice.

Seek out the right thing and the righteous path.

I know its hard and I know we sometimes fail, but It’s something we should work on and strive for, especially in today’s world.

Evil is around every corner, and if we don’t seek justice and speak up, who will?

Prayer: God give me the courage I need to stand up for what’s right. In every conversation, in every situation, please help me to seek justice and stand up for those people who can’t stand up for themselves. The ones that you love just as dearly as I and you call them your children just as I am one of your children, please help me to always help them when I am given the opportunity and help me to even seek out opportunities to help and do the right thing. Thank you for your grace and love on this journey, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Keeping up with the Jones’s’…..does that sound familiar to you?
It probably does.
In today’s society, we are brought up in a world where imagery and advertising WANTS us to constantly want more and wants us to consume more product.
This is not a Godly standard of thinking, but a very worldly one.
God tells us not to covet and desire something that our neighbor has.
It’s okay to want nice things and to want better for your family, but when it gets to the point of lustful desire for these things or desiring the status that comes with these things, that is where the problem begins.
We should find contentment in the place that we are.
God brings us all through many stages and steps on our journeys, and we are not expected to be in the same place at the same time.
I would like to encourage you to find peace and contentment through gratitude.
A daily practice of gratitude and thankfulness will open doors to more blessings than you would believe!

Prayer: God I am so grateful for my special and unique journey that you are guiding me on. I am so thankful for the place I am and the things you are teaching me in this place. I also look forward to the future walking with you and the many steps that will come in due time. Thank you for guiding me into my best life! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This will bring glory, honor, and praise to Father God.
We are not called to clean the fish, but simply to go fishing in faith.
When we ‘catch’ people up in the Gospel of Truth, and they come to the kingdom, we should accept them.
It isn’t our job to judge or cast them out because they may look a little different from us.
Sometimes other people’s sin is so glaring to us because it just looks different from our own.
What would we have done if Christ rejected us when we called to him?
We wouldn’t stand a chance.
So I encourage you believers, to be accepting of your fellow man and woman.
Love each other as you love yourself and as Christ loves us all.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for accepting me when I called to you from the depths of despair! Thank you for loving me and making me a new creation! I truly believe that those you call you will guide and mold and make into new creations also. Help me to love and bestow kindness upon your sheep just as you do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sometimes we feel defeated.
Whether the mundane parts of daily life get to us, our day in and day out responsibilities, jobs, etc. start to weigh us down, we can always look back to this scripture.
God gives us hope that we can make it through anything because the victory already belongs to us through faith in Jesus Christ.
God is a God of 11th hour miracles so even when all seems lost, just keep the faith and God will come through for you.
Sometimes we don’t understand what is going on, but most of the time in hindsight we can see God’s hand working for us and keeping us the entire time we were struggling.

Prayer: God please help me to focus on you in the midst of all of my battles. Help me to know that you have already given me victory in Jesus Christ and help me to be assured that the victory is on its way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sometimes when we face situations in life, things just don’t add up.
We may have a vision of something that God has promised us, but when we look at that and think about how it will come to pass, it may seem impossible.
Nothing is impossible with God! He has a different way of moving, thinking, and creating than we do!

He is omniscient and omnipresent, so it’s only natural that his ways are higher and beyond our comprehension sometimes.
When you’re looking forward to the promises God has for your life, and you are trying to understand things, it’s okay if you don’t totally grasp how it will happen.
Just have faith!

Faith is believing in the things that are unseen, but that you know are true and real.
Add your faith to the equation and watch what God will do in your life!
Prayer: Father God I know my ways and thoughts are not your ways of doing things. You know all and see all, so through faith, I trust that you will bring the work you started in me and in my life to full fruition in due time. I’ve had friends in my life that didn’t feel complete or didn’t feel that they were doing the Lord’s work because they didn’t have a title like “Pastor” or “Deacon” or “Missionary”. My heart has always broken for them because obviously not everyone is going to be on a church board or have a title in front of a bunch of people. This doesn’t mean that your work that you do for God means any less! Imagine the church as a body how it is described in the Bible. Some people might have more obvious jobs, like the eyes or mouth, but the pinky toe is just as important! Without balance, we can’t move forward. A body can’t walk properly without toes! We all have to work together to keep the entire body functioning properly. We won’t all have the more flashy titles or the jobs with obvious recognition, but we can’t be worried about that. We must continue to do all things as we’re doing them for Christ. Even going to your job on a daily basis you can make a difference in the lives of the people you come in contact with.

Prayer: Lord please help me to do every job, every task, every thing in life as if I’m doing it for Christ. I know that you will bless the work of my hands and that you will use it to serve the body of Christ in ways I may never know about. Thank you for all you do for me and for giving me purpose even in the small things! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The word promises us that when we bind up things here on Earth, the heavens will back us up as well. We have to be careful what we speak into existence because our words are very powerful and just as a rudder steers an enormous ship our tongue and words steer the path of our life. I would like to encourage you to speak positivity and blessings and prosperity into your own life as well as the lives of those around you.

Prayer: God help me to use my words to speak life into situations around me. Help me to guard my words from causing negative ripples in this world and in the heavenly realms. Help me to always remember that the power of life and death are in the tongue. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This is probably one of the most quoted scriptures in the Bible. One thing we have to remember is that WE HAVE ARMOR! Don’t forget to put on the armor of God every day. These pieces are described in Ephesians as follows: loins girt with truth (belt of truth), breastplate of righteousness, shoes with the preparation of the gospel of peace (peace), shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit/word of God. Let us take truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God into all things that we do. These will be our strength and our protection.

Prayer: Thank you father that you put in place things for us to meditate on and take with us each day to offer us protection from the enemy. We know the battle we fight isn’t against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Help us always remember to fight in the spirit with the full protection you gave us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What does your life reflect? Are you a person that people can turn to if they need help? Are you the one people hide from because you spread the gossip of so-and-so’s failed marriage around town? Your heart will overflow into your actions and your life. Matthew 12:34 says the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. If your heart is full of hate and malice, that’s what your words and your actions in life will take the shape of. On the flip side of the coin, if you speak life and perform acts of kindness, your life will be a reflection of God’s love and great mercy. If you find that your life isn’t quite reflecting the image that you want to portray, spend some time in a quiet place seeking God’s face. Ask him to touch and change your heart into a heart for helping others. He is faithful to answer, but sometimes we have to quiet our busy lives enough to be able to hear that still small voice. I encourage you to seek out ways to help others and be a blessing to them. God will surely reward you for it and your life will be a reflection of beauty and grace.

Prayer: God touch my heart today. Give me a heart for all things good and pleasant. Help me to bear the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) in all that I do. How thankful I am for Jesus! For the grace that he gives us, the sacrifice that he made for us, and the light that he is in the darkness. The next verse after this one says “See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the people, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.” So where is our help in times of darkness and trouble? He’s there! Always shining his light into us and through us. Since we have the indwelling of the spirit of Christ, we can and should also be that light to others. When times are dark like the world we have come to dwell in today, we can be assured that Christ is our light, and he will continue to draw people unto himself and continue to save by his grace.

Prayer: Lord reveal the light of Christ in my life that I can shine into the darkness in this world. Help me to remember that even a tiny light can be seen miles away in utter darkness and the darkness cannot overcome the light. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

In Philippians 4 God also gives us alternative positive things to focus on by saying “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” Try focusing your mind on heavenly things and see if it helps shift your attitude and your direction in life.

God gives us many promises. They even come to us in many ways. Sometimes he speaks almost audibly. Sometimes we dream prophetic dreams. Sometimes we read of his promises directly from the word. One thing we can be sure of, is that God is a keeper of promises. He is truth. This scripture reminds us of the promise of Christ. Imagine how Mary must have felt once the angel came and gave her the promise of being the mother of Christ. I’m sure doubt tried to set in, and she had struggles of her own, but she continued to trust in the Lord and not her own thoughts and understanding. She continued to pursue and believe in the promises of God in her life, and we should too!

Prayer: God I thank you so much that you have a perfect will and a perfect plan for my life. Help me Lord to trust in you and be faithful to know that your promises are coming because you are truth and life, and doubt and fear are liars. Thank you for your promises, in Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

The way to get away from feeling like this is to have a cheerful heart. Do something that makes your heart happy. You might be someone who gains joy from helping others and performing an act of kindness. You might feel uplifted when listening to worship music. Heck, you might be a person that just needs to watch some adorable puppy videos to get out of your negative feelings. For many people getting outside into nature and feeling the sun on their skin lifts their spirit. Whatever things bring you joy and put a smile on your face, do those things. If you can bring cheer back to your heart it is medicine for your body and spirit. God commands us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, so we must first love ourselves to be able to properly love our neighbor. Take care of yourself today friend.

Prayer: God help me to feel joy today. Let your healing waters flow in my life and lift me up in my time of need. I trust that you will answer in your perfect timing and according to your perfect will for my life, but right now I just need to be loved and uplifted.
