What makes generosity serve, stay and sustain?

Recorded live at Ndere Centre during the sixth edition of the Gathering of Givers, this episode brings together host Jacqueline Asiimwe and humanitarian leader Shanta Patel Rabadiya for a thoughtful conversation about generosity, partnership and responding to communities with humility in episode 11.

Shanta’s first memory of organised giving goes back to when she was 16 years old and volunteered during a vaccination drive in a remote community. Seeing mothers arrive with children who had no clothes deeply affected her and shaped her belief that no gift should ever be dismissed as too small.

Today, Shanta works through APAR Foundation to mobilise humanitarian support across Uganda. The foundation’s work includes mobile health camps, nutrition programmes, boreholes, menstrual hygiene support, scholastic materials, wheelchairs, mattresses and assistance for elderly people and persons with disabilities.

In this conversation, Shanta shares why her giving is connected to her spiritual roots and why generosity must come from the heart rather than the desire for recognition.

At the Gathering of Givers 2024, David Lambert Tumwesigye introduced himself with a grin: “I’m a middle-aged man. Where is the middle of age? Right center.” The joke lands, but what follows is anything but light. He sketches a life shaped by sacrifice and lucky breaks, evidence that generosity isn’t window dressing; it’s load bearing.

He grew up in a warm rural community better known, he teases, for its hot springs than its headlines. The heat that changed his family’s fortunes, however, was human. His father’s trajectory bent because an uncle, Eliezan Kabir, paid school fees through primary; when that support ended and school stopped, an education officer noticed a bright boy out of class, intervened, and helped him return. One act of generosity, then another; a chain reaction that turned obstacles into on-ramps. “We are who we are because people made sacrifices, and because we were lucky,” Tumwesigye says, and you can hear both gratitude and resolve in it.

That conviction became his compass in social protection work. While advocating for the Senior Citizens Grant, he often met polished versions of the same objection: we can’t afford it. He answered with a straight face and a sharp edge, if we can fund bridges and big buildings, we can also fund dignity. He noticed something else too: many of the people now calling grants “uneconomical” once relied on public bursaries to cross their own bridges. Memory, he suggests gently, is a public good.

His own turning point came at NSSF when a managing director slid a stack of papers across the desk, an International Labour Office scholarship for advanced study in social protection financing. “If it interests you, come back,” the MD said. Tumwesigye went back, and that single opportunity set the arc of three decades. Someone passed a ladder instead of a lecture; he has been paying that gesture forward ever since.

Through friends he describes as “among the most generous I know,” he helped produce the Gathering of Givers, bringing not only time but tools. Often, he says, what’s missing isn’t money so much as intent: decide to put what you already have at people’s disposal and watch capacity multiply. The satisfaction of giving, in his experience, routinely outpaces the applause of receiving.

Ask him about young people and his cadence quickens. He will not accept the lazy myth that youth are “not ready.” He sees imagination, generosity, and problem-solving waiting for oxygen. Give them oxygen, opportunity, challenge, trust, and they will out-invent our problems. His aim is simple and stubborn: equalise life chances so luck isn’t the loudest variable.

Tumwesigye is not allergic to complexity; he is allergic to using complexity as an alibi. Generosity, in his framing, is disciplined, measurable, nation-shaping. It is the difference between a state that counts bridges and a society that also counts the people who cross them. A little goes a long way, sometimes all the way to a life that turns around and lifts others.

The Gathering of Givers 2024 carried a single, resonant conviction: giving, at its purest, is less about abundance and more about intention. This year’s spotlight fell on young givers, people whose energy, empathy, and imagination are quietly redrawing what generosity looks like today.

Episode 9 of the comm-UNITY! Podcast (Season 14) captures that spirit in motion. Titled “The Inner Wheel of the Heart,” the episode features Dr. Norah Madaya (Director, NORPAP Consults) and Hope, an education officer within the national prisons service. Guided by host Jacqueline Asiimwe (CEO, CivSource Africa Galaxy), the conversation invites us to rethink what we call “enough,” and where the first spark of giving truly begins.

“I consider a generous person to be someone with a soul, one who gives relentlessly, regardless of how much they have,” Dr. Madaya says. She tells of a mother who could scarcely provide two meals a day yet still reached outward with encouragement. From encounters like these, Dr. Madaya helped form a women’s group, twenty women who gather to share, pray, and uplift one another.

“I asked them what they had,” she recalls. “They said, ‘nothing.’ But after talking, they realized they had something, willingness.”

That single word becomes a quiet engine. For every small contribution the women make to their poultry project, Dr. Madaya adds a little more, literally. “For each woman who joins, I add one bird,” she says. “From fifty-five birds, they now have seventy-five. It’s little, but for them, it’s impactful.” The math is simple; the effect is profound. Confidence returns. Savings begin. The story reframes generosity not as spectacle, but as steady companionship.

Asked to name a generous example, Hope smiles. She points to Inner Wheel, a global women’s organization born out of Rotary, whose members are committed to transforming communities through service. For Hope, that commitment takes shape among incarcerated women, many of them mothers, who often face scarcity alongside their sentences.

She tells of newborn twins who needed milk when a fellow inmate, previously sharing milk, was released. “We mobilized quickly and sent milk. It saved her life,” Hope says simply. In a world that often measures giving in large cheques and headlines, these small acts, milk, baby clothes, sanitary items, soap, sugar, are quietly revolutionary. They restore dignity where it is most fragile.

“It’s about checking on someone who has no hope in you, and making a difference,” Hope says. “That’s giving from the heart.”

Both women trace their instinct to give to habits modelled at home. “My mother taught me to never turn anyone away,” Hope shares. “Our home was always open, strangers, guests, people who just needed a place. She’d say, ‘It’s not their fault they’re like that. Give them the best.’” Dr. Madaya remembers a father who tutored her in reciprocity. “He’d give me something and ask me to return it. If I hesitated, he’d say, ‘It’s not good not to give.’ But if I shared, he promised to give me again.”

These lessons converge in one line that anchors the episode’s title: “Sharing doesn’t come from the lips,” Dr. Madaya says. “It must come from the inside, from the inner wheel of the heart.” The phrase lingers because it reveals generosity as a way of being before it becomes a list of deeds.

As the conversation closes, both women make a gentle, insistent ask of the next generation. “A meaningful life is a life of giving,” Dr. Madaya says. “If you want to find purpose, live a life that is shared.” Hope adds a practical lens for everyday practice: “Amidst everything young people do, let them have a passion to impact lives. Giving doesn’t have to be big. Just give and give from the heart.”

At the 2025 Gathering of Givers, we sat down with Brenda Boonabaana, board member of Albinism Umbrella Uganda, whose journey embodies this year’s theme, Our Generous Spirit. Born with albinism in a community that didn’t fully understand it, Brenda’s earliest gift was the unconditional acceptance of her grandfather, who called her a blessingwhen others were shocked. From there, her life has been a tapestry of kindness, strangers offering rides to school, sponsors funding her education from primary through university, and mentors guiding her path.

Yet alongside generosity, Brenda has faced harsh discrimination, from exclusion in classrooms to deeply harmful myths that put lives at risk. She painted a vivid picture of the challenges persons with albinism endure: social isolation, barriers to education and employment,limited access to healthcare like sunscreen, and dangerous misconceptions.

Her call to action was clear and urgent:Acceptanceis an act of generosity. “The moment a person with albinism is accepted in the community, everything else keeps flowing,” she said. For Brenda, acceptance is not passive tolerance but active inclusion in schools, workplaces, relationships, and every sphere of life.

Her dream is simple yet transformative: to see persons with albinism treated just like any other person, judged not byskin color but by character, capability, and humanity. In her words, “We are all Africans. We eat the same food. We can do anything any other person can do. Then why would you discriminate?”

Brenda’s story is a reminder that generosity is not only about giving things; it’s about giving people their rightful place in the human family.

They're here to redefine giving, not as a transaction, but as a practice of presence, service, and belief. Belief in country. Belief in community. Belief in the unseen value of tipping a little more when faith is fading. Of responding to that midnight call from a broke friend. Of choosing kindness even when the world has been unkind.

They speak of military men who gave their lives without medals, of friends who paid for strangers' dialysis during lockdown, and of communities like 4040 whose long-haul commitment to giving outlives trends. They speak of generosity as agency, the moment when young Africans stop asking for permission to help and start writing their own story of impact.

A defining moment in Abaas’ journey came when the late legendary journalist Bbale Francis entrusted him with his fifty-year-old media brand. Fresh out of college, Abaas took that act of trust and transformed it into the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), an organization that has since become a catalyst for change in Uganda’s media space.

Now celebrating a decade of impact, MCI equips young journalists with the skills, leadership, and social consciousness needed to drive meaningful storytelling. Since 2017, it has trained over 3,000 journalism students, launched more than 10 youth-led media startups, and supported 130 fellows in solutions-based journalism. With programs like the Mobile Newsroom, offering hands-on training across 17 Ugandan universities, and the Media Hub, a collaborative space for media innovation, MCI is nurturing a new generation of storytellers committed to truth, impact, and change.

With a strong focus on underserved regions and emerging podcasters, MCI envisions the creation of the First Youth Newsroom, content created by and for the youth. But for Abaas, this work goes beyond building skills; it’s about transforming the very narrative of Africa. He is determined to challenge negative stereotypes and promote stories that celebrate growth, acknowledge complexity, and spark collective responsibility.

Generosity sits at the heart of Abaas’ mission, not just the generosity of resources, but the deeper kind: sharing space, time, privilege, knowledge, and opportunity. Through MCI, he practices leadership model grounded in abundance and access, ensuring others are empowered to step into their purpose and tell their stories on their own terms.

This small favor led to an unexpected return; the women covered his entire journey to Diani, Kenya, a destination he’d never visited. To Wembi, it was the best thing that happened to him that year, proving how even the smallest act of kindness can have a far reaching impact.

Wembi mentions that as he works with young people, he witnesses generosity in action every day. He recalls how a friend who once helped pay his school fees was a gesture that left a lasting impression on him and praises how young people are proactive in sharing resources to support each other’s dreams.

For Wembi, generosity isn't just about grand gestures; it's the little things: like giving a pair of trousers or a handkerchief to someone who needs it that count. He believes in the principle that the more you give, the more it comes back and that the true purpose of giving is to uplift others. She is also the founder of Alolo 365, a sustainable fashion business that upcycles textile waste into new garments and accessories.

Mary's journey into this work is inspiring. Growing up, she witnessed the struggles of many young girls in her community who lacked the educational opportunities she had. Her experiences with her father's work in rural schools and the challenges faced by her friend motivated her to make a difference. Today, Mary is dedicated to empowering young girls and youth through training and mentorship, providing them with the skills and opportunities to create a better future for themselves.

Mary's work is not just about numbers; she focuses on transforming the lives of 10 young girls each year, ensuring they receive the best training and support. Her initiatives extend beyond her immediate community, reaching out to various rural areas and collaborating with other organizations to maximize impact. In 2024, Mary plans to continue her training programs, expand her outreach, and work closely with persons with disabilities to provide them with the skills and support they need to thrive.

Meet Satina Harry Okoi, a dynamic youth committed to reshaping the future of leadership in Africa. With six years of hands-on experience in community development, Satina identified a crucial gap in African leadership and took action by founding the Paragon Leadership Initiative.

Motivated by her observations of underprepared leaders assuming roles without adequate training, Satina launched the Paragon Leadership Initiative in 2018. Starting with school prefects, she delivers comprehensive training and support in governance, leadership, and personal development. Despite facing initial resource constraints, Satina rallied friends to volunteer and facilitate sessions.

Today, the impact of the Paragon Leadership Initiative spans three states, empowering young leaders with indispensable skills and nurturing their growth in character and capacity. Through the initiative, these emerging leaders not only refine their abilities but also spearhead community projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At just twenty three years old, Rama serves as the Special Assistant to the CEO at Epic Africa, a pan-African NGO based in Dakar, focusing on strengthening philanthropy among CSOs in West Africa. Rama's passion for philanthropy has placed her in the spotlight for several years. She also leads Giving Tuesday Senegal and has a soft spot for creativity and creative minds.

Recognizing a prevalent challenge faced by women in Senegal and West Africa, Rama founded Whistle Blower, an association dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) in the region.

Inspired by the UN's 16 Days of Activism against GBV in 2021, Rama got the Initiative running, aiming to protect women and create a conducive environment for them to thrive in Africa.

Driven by her desire to rewrite the narrative for women in her community, Rama's work with Whistle Blowers is fueled by a deep sense of responsibility towards our sisters and mothers. Dr. Victoria Wells Wulsin, a seasoned psychiatrist and philanthropist, states that "strong connections can help people navigate through all sorts of problems." The stories shared in this book are testaments of the power of female connections "serving as bridges and smoothing the way," as Wells Wulsin describes.

When women tap into their commonality, the effect is not only shared understanding and solidarity. In the case of African women, the effect is palpable resilience. The stories in this book demonstrate how African women back home and in the diaspora demonstrate resilience and solidarity by relying on race- and gender-specific empathetic bonds in their social networks. These include generative stories of working through personal and professional obstacles through supportive alliances with other women.

For instance, some stories are about dealing with poverty and single motherhood; Others are about struggles to succeed in male-dominated professions.

In Still's analysis, the focus is on how women storytellers use a variety of narrative strategies - including metaphor, allusion and the ingeniously imagined "revelatory past" - the better to convey the symbolic import of their dynamic, evolving network of healers to their listeners. By representing this network not as a closed community, but as a proliferating, diversifying web - and, most important, as a narrative process - the women's stories themselves become a vital, generative function of the healing work they celebrate.

These stories celebrate the spiritual, therapeutic aspects of women's and gender studies and the person-centered approach, as researchers and scholars engage with people who find courage and insight in their daily experiences.

Hope Nankunda has for the past seven years spearheaded the campaign to support teenagers through school and to demystify the myths surrounding menstruation.

Hope Nankunda is a mother, teacher, counselor, and founder of Raising Teenagers (RTU), and Central Region Coordinator at Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. Hope tells the relentless story of how she found purpose in raising teenagers by attending to their most pressing psychological needs without leaving parents and the communities out of the conversation.

Using hiking as a fundraising and advocacy tool, Hope has spearheaded the hike of Muhabura, Wanale, Karangura, Moroto, Buyende, and Sabinyo to mobilize sanitary towels for teenage girls in the areas where the hikes are undertaken. Her work of advocating for menstrual hygiene spans different parts of Uganda cognizant of the need to get more people involved in this campaign.

In the month of July and August, residents of Eastern Uganda had the gut-wrenching experience of losing loved ones, their homes, livestock and livelihoods because of floods from heavy rains.

Back in the heart of a very hyper-urban Kampala, every downpour is a waterlogged reminder of the essence of wetlands which we do not see that much of anymore.

Karamoja on the other hand has taken a direct hit from the food insecurity that comes with climate change. These few scenarios are a drop in the ocean of the impact of climate change. What we thought was a far-off occurrence is a present-crisis that we need to address. Who is going to address it if we don’t? Who is going to change if we won’t?

In his view, helping others without expecting anything in return is the surest way to reap the rewards of your work. In Episode 5 of season 9 of the comm-UNITY! Podcast series, courtesy of CivSource Africa. Nabou Fall, a cretaive entrepreneur, coach and author committed to Africa, from Senegal speaks to us about her work in the incubation and acceleration of artists by equipping them with the tools to become artistically viable entrepreneurs. She opens up about her work with artists to develop a long-term business plans centered on the value chain, which facilitates the sale of artwork and increases the artists' global profile.

She also discusses how talent alone isn't enough to make it as a successful artist-entrepreneur; visibility is essential. Nabou encourages visibility of artists in areas where their work can be viewed and appreciated by kindred members of their community. She continues to explain that investors and consumers belonging to the same "tribe" all have similar values and goals in life. The most valuable asset is the ability to discuss creative ideas with people who share one's values.

Nabou then encourages African artists to continue sharing our true narratives. That way, not only will we be in charge of the story, but these tales will live on in our culture for quite some time as they are passed down from generation to generation.

Personal branding is one of her main focuses as a coach; she says, "I try to do for others what I have done for myself." Nabou is convinced that all artists and creatives should have access to a space where they can both give back to their local community and make a living from their work.

Loupa describes in this episode how the growth of the Manyatta institutions has led in a shift in emphasis from collective to individual acts of kindness. And how preserving the Kraal as communal property encourages a sense of belonging and sharing among members of the community. When asked what it means to give in the Karamojong Pastoral communities, he says it means keeping what is given secure until it is time to pass it on to another member within the community. Young shepherds who volunteer to care for the community's herd often receive gifts of young animals, which they are expected to raise till adulthood before keeping them as their own, as a sign of appreciation from the community's elders. Furthermore, he speaks to us about his photographic Endeavor with the Kuonyesha Art Fund 2021 cohort, during which he produced a pastoral photo book depicting the tales and lives of the Karamojong pastoral communities. This is his way of giving back to the community that raised him, a gift of inspiration to the next generation.

In this episode, we speak with Raul Rugamba, the CEO of Rwanda's Hobe Agency, who has more than ten years of experience in the African cultural and creative industry. Raul tells us about what it means to "do things differently" and about his own experiences as a creative entrepreneur. He describes how he navigates cultural and creative settings using technology and education to create homegrown solutions that enable the creation of original African products while also ensuring the sustainability and survival of art professionals. Raul's objective is to improve the value of artists, to accompany them, and, eventually, to increase the sector's contribution to the continent's growth while also creating jobs.

According to Nabaggala Maximilian Lilian, a dancer, model, creative artist, and choreographer of #FADED who is also Kuonyesha Art Fund partner 2021, the definition of generosity is the act of giving up a little bit of oneself without the expectation of receiving anything in return. According to her, giving is defined as carrying out an essential task that a person would perform voluntarily rather than being compelled to do so.

In this episode, we embark on a journey to discover how her parents instilled a sense of generosity in her at a young age. The impression and busyness that came with having a home in downtown Kampala, as well as what that meant to relatives who came to visit from their home village, was too much for them to handle. Nabaggala and her siblings were taught how to care for their visitors, making her experience of generosity more personal.

According to Nabaggala, every one of her birthdays is a chance for her to give back to the community. She is of the opinion that giving is about sacrificing your best in the expectation that the recipient will regard it as an equally meaningful gesture. She emphasizes how important it is to share what one loves with others.

She donates her time to a number of different community outreach programs, where she puts her artistic ability and talent to good use. Nabaggala finds that giving to her is a form of rejuvenation, and that it enables her to give from a cup that is full to the brim rather than one that is empty.

Giving is a very important concept to Nabaggala; in fact, the act of giving is what gives her art new life!

Sire Simon Loduk is a fashion designer by profession and a Kuonyesha Art Fund 2021 partner. In episode 1, season 9 of the comm-UNITY! Podcast series, he discusses how fashion changed his life and inspired him to give back to his community. Simon attributes his entire success to his community, particularly the encouragement to return to and further his education at a technical institute for fashion design. 

He compares his product's popularity in his community to rats that have smelt river fish. He says they absolutely adore his products and that he is responsible for launching the majority of Kaabong's fashion designers' careers. In this episode, Simon gushes about his love for his community and their unwavering support for his career. He says this is one of the reasons he is always giving back through various skill training projects so that other people can get the experience he would not have gotten if his community had not consistently and timely supported him.

Sharing is caring for Simon, and his faith remains a strong foundation for him when it comes to the principles he follows when it comes to giving. He says;

"Generosity is the heart of God, not a human heart." If you put on a man's heart, you can never be generous."

In this season, we will profile Arts and Culture practitioners from Uganda, Rwanda, Cote d'Ivoire and Mali, sharing how they have contributed to the growth and wellbeing of their communities. Additionally, we will discuss how creatives have used their talents and skills for the purpose of philanthropy in these countries.

In this episode, we follow Marion Natukunda, current president elect of Rotary Club of Kiwatule, through her personal journey of cultivating a generous spirit. Marion currently works for the Ministry of Health and has served in Rotary for the last ten years. It was her mother's battle with polio that inspired her to get involved in charitable endeavors that took her on a journey of selflessness generosity. She sees Rotary as an avenue to give with no regrets, and she encourages others to do the same. Marion is always on the lookout for those in need, and she believes that generosity is a concept that everyone should be aware of.

“There is a need to raise awareness of how Rotarians and non-Rotarians give while remembering that accountability, transparency, and trust are the most important currencies in rotary giving! People must 'TRUST' what you are doing! People need to 'SEE' what you're doing!

Generosity comes in many forms, including the donation of time, resources, goods, and, of course, treasure. Whatever is given, generosity is ingrained in our blood in Africa; it is our legacy, how we express ourselves, and our way of life. Francis Xavier Sentamu, former District Governor D9211 (Uganda and Tanzania) and of Rotary Club of Kiwatule, speaks to us in this episode about generosity in action, how it is more than just an outward behavior, but about caring for one another and looking out for one another, particularly in the African context.

According to Francis, generosity consists of a person's underlying thoughts, feelings, and motivations to give. It is more than just a monetary expression of generosity; it is the use of classifications, skills, and professions and the use of time to be fully part of the solution, making it easier to reach out to the community. Francis speaks fondly of ‘TRUST’ virtue within Rotary as a currency and unseen component in generosity that keeps the giving flowing. His philanthropic journey is a seed that he has seen multiply a thousand-fold to demonstrate Rotary's impact in transforming communities.

The truth is that generosity is a practice that can be learned. It's something you can work on over time in your life. It's just like any other habit. Even better, being generous provides a wealth of opportunities for learning about yourself, others, your community, and the world at large.

There is no such thing as a "one size fits all" solution. This is what happened to Chris Kayongo, Chair of the Service Projects Committee of the Rotary Club of Ssese Islands, one of Uganda's oldest Rotary clubs, founded in 1991 and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

With his membership in this club, Chris has found the perfect outlet for his generosity. It allowed him to use his time and resources to make a difference in his community as an individual. From medical outreaches to the establishment of health centers, the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Islands, which has 97 active members, is dedicated to generosity driven by the community and the needs of the community. Working with the community when generosity is involved is a true testament to ensuring long-term impactful change.

Chris speaks of time and individuals as the driving forces behind generosity and that people have to work together to actualize the change they want to see. It begings with ‘YOU’ and ‘I’.

Harnessing the power of collective giving in Rotary Club Kiwatule, often transitions into giving circles, bringing people together to focus on community needs and community-driven solutions. When like-minded givers come together to discuss community needs and give of their treasure, time, and talent, a giving circle is born- ‘Philanthropy with the Spirit of Ubuntu’. Robert Kiggundu former President of Rotary Club Kiwantule walks us through his personal and clubs' journey of philanthropy in an Afrocentric space that tells a story of who we are a people and how the message is spread to others that he and club get to interact with. He calls on every Ugandan that is able to give to give and that leveraging of vocations to give really does make a difference.

Generosity spreads like wildfire. What comes naturally to us is partnering with one another, working together, and displaying a great deal of compassion and generosity. Our genetic forefathers lived for hundreds of thousands of years because they learnt to collaborate and help one another. They prospered because they cared when someone was hurt and supported one another. We are here today because they discovered that being generous was the greatest way for a species to flourish.

In this episode, Edwin Nuwagaba Babimpa reminds us that a giving heart is one that is deeply rooted in community and faith. He highlights how Kabale rotary club members consistently bring to the table their distinct particular qualifications bestowed by God to serve the community, multiplying generosity.

Being present is a powerful expression of support for generosity and gratitude. In this episode, Winfred reminds us that being fully present becomes a gift to ourselves and others we touch in our life. According to an old Chinese wisdom saying, when we are genuinely present, we 'give life to life' when we give. We may be touched when we give of ourselves, time, and treasure to others, and in touching and being touched, we progress towards less reactive, more responsive, fresh, and intimate forms of being and generosity.

In Winfred's instance, the support of family members went a long way in allowing her to start and continue the road of generosity with Rotary Club Kampala. She details how Rotary is a family away from one's first family — A Family of Generous Givers! And how Openness, Diversity, and Inclusiveness are crucial when it comes to ageless giving in Kampala Rotary Club (The Arch).
