- 581 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 4: Good Works (#1-10)
Good works are necessary for the Christian and follow true faith just as fruit grows on a good tree. Yet good works are completely separate from salvation and justification before God. Christians look to God’s Law to understand a good work (primarily in the 10 commandments), to see not only where we fail, but how, by the work of the Holy Spirit, we are able to live a good and holy life to His glory.
Rev. Dennis McFadden joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the doctrine of good works.

Sat, 24 Oct 2026 - 56min - 580 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 3: Righteousness of Faith Before God (#9-23)
Christ alone is our righteousness (I Corinthians 1:30). Theologians attempted, and still do, to make additional explanations of how one becomes righteous. However, to add anything to our salvation besides Christ is nothing but vanity and a chasing after wind. A common mistake of the Old Adam is to believe that God does the first step, and the person completes justification through works of love. This equation sounds pious, but leads people to false belief, despair and other great shame and vice. Cling to the clear words of Scripture that we are saved by Christ alone, grace alone, and faith alone.

Sat, 17 Oct 2026 - 56min - 579 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 3: Righteousness of Faith Before God (Note-#8)
We believe “by grace you have been saved through faith”. However, is faith in Christ the cause of our righteousness or the instrument by which we receive Christ’s righteousness? Is there a distinction between Christ’s divine and human nature when it comes to our righteousness? The Concordians were bold to teach the Truth that it is Christ alone who is our Righteousness (I Corinthians 1:30). While Christians have weaknesses and defects, we do not doubt our righteousness based on our actions; yet faith is never alone, but always bears fruit in love and hope (I Corinthians 13:13).

Sat, 10 Oct 2026 - 54min - 578 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 2: Free Will (#7-19)
There are only two causes for a person’s conversion:
The Holy SpiritGod’s Word as the instrument of the Holy Spirit.Scripture assures us that we are purely passive in our conversion. Although our natural instincts desire to have some kind of part in our conversion (after all, we have to work for everything else in life), we cling to the promises of God’s grace revealed to us by God’s Word.
“Lord help us to cling to Your full-sufficient salvation won for us by Christ’s cross and by the Holy Spirit. Amen”

Sat, 03 Oct 2026 - 53min - 577 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 2: Free Will (#1-6)
Since the fall of Adam and Eve, humankind is completely blind in spiritual matters and an enemy of God (1 Corinthians 2:14 & Genesis 8:21). Our only hope is for the Holy Spirit to make us alive together with Christ (Ephesians 2:5). In the 16th century, just like today, the Concordians battled against man’s inherent desire to have some credit for his salvation. Conversion occurs by means, the Word and Sacraments, and it is God’s will that ALL would hear the Word and believe (Psalm 95:8; Romans 10:17).

Sat, 26 Sep 2026 - 53min - 576 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 1: Original Sin (#14-25)
Original sin is not a minor blemish. We don’t possess even a spark of good. Even when sin is not public, the corruption of our nature remains. Like a terminal disease, original sin cannot be removed by human effort. We must carefully distinguish human nature from original sin without separating them. Original sin corrupts our nature, but it is not the essence of humanity; otherwise, God would be made the creator of sin. Christ came to redeem our corrupted nature, and the Holy Spirit works to heal that corruption. Yet original sin is not fully eliminated in this life. We await Christ’s return, when original sin will be destroyed once and for all.

Sat, 19 Sep 2026 - 57min - 575 - Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 1: Original Sin (#5-13)
Jesus is NOT sin incarnate. God creates; Satan corrupts. Jesus is the image of the invisible God. When Christ took on our nature, He did so without sin. Although we are new creations in Christ, our corruption is not minor. Our corruption is so deep we need a perfect Savior with perfect blood to die an innocent death. This understanding is difficult to grasp according to reason, but it is a comfort to know that in this broken world, we can know with confidence that Christ has made us a new creation—one that awaits the perfect life in heaven at the final resurrection.

Sat, 12 Sep 2026 - 57min - 574 - The Formula of Concord: Epitome, Article 1: Original Sin (#1-4)
Original sin is the deep and thorough corruption of our human nature which requires God Himself to overcome for our salvation. The Concordians were careful to teach that original sin was not the essence of a person; if that were the case, God would be the creator of sin. According to Scripture, we are God’s creation but inherit this corruption from Adam’s fall. This corruption is real, but even more real is God’s love revealed by the blood of Christ!

Sat, 05 Sep 2026 - 55min - 573 - Timeline and Summary, Content, Rule, and Norm of the Formula of Concord
The sole source of doctrine and hope for the Church is Scripture—and Scripture alone. Yet the Church has also received written symbols, not equal to Scripture, but given for faithful confession: to reject heresy and to present a clear proclamation of the orthodox, universal Christian faith. The Formula of Concord continues to preserve us in Christ, keeping the Church steadfast in pure doctrine and practice.

Sat, 29 Aug 2026 - 55min - 572 - Controversies Leading Up to the Formula of Concord
The theological controversies leading up to the signing of the Formula were not solved at one congregational meeting. Some of the controversies (e.g. The Antinomian Controversy) lasted almost 30 years. The LORD used these conflicts to help the Church gain clarity in the important doctrines of Holy Scripture (adiaphora, good works, synergism, and original sin). We learn from the Concordians how to confess the Truth in spite of the conflict that will come, for we are called to pay attention to doctrine as salvation is at stake.

Sat, 22 Aug 2026 - 55min - 571 - Development of the Formula of Concord
The road to Concord was neither straight nor smooth. Although the Peace of Augsburg granted legal status to the faith confessed in the Augsburg Confession, doctrinal differences among the Reformers soon came to light. Many controversies took decades to resolve through patient study of the Word and faithful care by theologians such as Jakob Andrea, Martin Chemnitz, and David Chytraeus. Their work provides a faithful approach to any issue in the Church: identify the status of the controversy, clarify points of agreement, and address points of disagreement. By God’s grace, we see how He brought the Church to unity, and we seek His help to remain united in Christ and His Word.

Sat, 15 Aug 2026 - 53min - 570 - Introduction to the Formula of Concord
The story from 1546 until 1580 is one of courage and cowardice, weakness and strength. The LORD used that season to clarify how we as God’s people confess the Truth of the Word. What would end up being 12 articles of Truth addressing the doctrinal issues of the day has a backstory of politics, war, personalities, and false doctrine.
“Help us, dear Heavenly Father to be faithful to Your Word and live holy lives according to it. Amen”

Sat, 08 Aug 2026 - 53min - 569 - Exhortation to Private Confession, Part 3
“When I urge you to go to Confession, I am doing nothing else than urging you to be Christian.” Individual confession and absolution shows us the depth of our sin and provides healing medicine through the Gospel. We ask that all who confess Christ confess their sins so that with all boldness and confidence we trust that we come to Him and receive the priceless, full forgiveness of sins. We will not coerce, but the Church will always offer this precious gift.

Sat, 01 Aug 2026 - 55min - 568 - Exhortation to Private Confession, Part 2
We are called to forgive one another as Christ has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32). This is not only done publicly, but confidentially, assuring that confidence of the sins will only be between the LORD and the confessor. Confession is not a payment for sins, but God’s work through the shed blood of Christ. We are beggars. The gift of forgiveness is real and ready for all to receive in faith.

Sat, 25 Jul 2026 - 54min - 567 - Exhortation to Private Confession, Part 1
Lutherans promote and even exhort every Christian to make use of private confession and absolution. The Concordians opposed mandatory confession but urged every Christian, pastors and laity alike, to use their freedom in Christ to receive Christ’s free forgiveness. There are two kinds of confession common among Christians: confession to the Lord and confession to the neighbor, as expressed in the Lord’s Prayer. Yet the Church calls pastors to exercise the Office of the Keys by offering private, confidential confession, so that all who come in faith may receive a clear conscience in Christ.

The Book of Concord gives us the guidelines for playing in the playground of God’s kingdom! What does the Bible tell me about sin? About God? How to pray? How does God come to me? How am I to live as a Christian? How am I to respond to sin? Where is our final hope? All these questions were answered, clarified, proclaimed, and confessed over 50 years in the 16th century and still are today!

Sat, 11 Jul 2026 - 55min - 565 - Do the Lutheran Confessions Form Us?
Studying the Lutheran Confessions means listening, learning, and living God’s grace in Christ. We are not only taught how to confess, but we are grounded in our identity in Christ to live as new creations. The Concordians were determined that faithful doctrine would bring salvation to those who heard the Word, enabling them to fully know the Truth of God, including original sin, salvation, the sacraments, the Church, the ministry, the Person of Christ, and Christ’s return.

Sat, 04 Jul 2026 - 56min - 564 - What are the Lutheran Confessions?
What does it mean to confess the faith? Put simply, it means that God speaks and we speak back what He says! To confess the faith is to speak the Truth of the whole Bible, fight against anything counter to that Truth, and by so doing, become a source of comfort for fellow believers (Heb. 10:23). Lutherans around the world walk together with a common confession because it is in accordance with Scripture. We confess the Book of Concord and challenge others who hear this confession: “What part of this confession is contrary to the Word of God?” Help us to confess the Truth, dear Heavenly Father!

Sat, 27 Jun 2026 - 55min - 563 - Power and Primacy of the Pope: Review
The Treatise confesses that the Church has been instituted by Christ. This confession gives us a basic understanding of how the Church will operate: not according to our own interests, but according to the LORD’s desires as revealed in His Word. We believe, teach, and confess that Christ is the head of the Church, not a man. Each pastor is given the divine right to preach the Gospel, administer the sacraments, and exercise the office of the keys.

The subscribers of the Treatise publicly confessed that the Lord had given the Church to call, elect, and ordain qualified ministers for the office of the Ministry. The subscribers affirmed that the Pope had no divine right to universal supremacy over the Church as Christ and Christ alone is head. Thanks be to God that the confession of the subscribers of the 16th century is still our confession today.

Sat, 13 Jun 2026 - 52min - 561 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 8 (#68-78)
The Office of the Keys, the power to forgive and retain sins, has been given to the Church. This is why the Church has the right to elect and ordain qualified ministers. When one decides that the Church no longer has this authority, no matter their position, they are outside of the Lord’s calling and are not to be followed. The Reformers began to elect and ordain their own ministers to assure that the pure Gospel was preached and souls received a clear conscience in Christ.

The authority of ministers consists in preaching the Gospel, forgiving sins, administering the sacraments, and excommunicating persons guilty of public sins. The Church, as she possesses the office of the keys, has the right to call and ordain qualified pastors. Bishops have traditionally overseen the ordination of ministers, but they cannot deprive congregations a pastor due to unbiblical additions to their responsibilities.

Sat, 30 May 2026 - 53min - 559 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 6 (#39-59)
Your public confession matters. Melancthon warns that the public confession in the Roman Catholic Church is filled with abuses of the papacy, indulgences, invocation of saints, and celibacy of the priests. He explains that these abuses hide Christ’s glory and rob consciences of firm consolation. As the Church battles through the questions of the day, she calls out sin and lack of faith as the LORD does and leans upon the full and sufficient work of Christ for forgiveness.

Sat, 23 May 2026 - 56min - 558 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 5 (#32-38)
The Gospel appears to be foolishness to the world. After all, we follow a Savior who wore a crown of thorns and was ridiculed in royal purple. Our old Adam desires to garner power and authority. Yet the Word is clear that Christian righteousness is not belonging to an outward form. The LORD changes our hearts to faith in Christ’s righteousness no matter the outward manifestation. The declarations of the Pope (which were counter to the Word and made the assertion that one had to follow him for salvation) point to him being the Anti-Christ. Whenever one will establish godless doctrines and distract hearers from the Word of God, they have the marks of the Anti-Christ. “Lord, keep us from false doctrine and the marks of the Anti-Christ, that we may believe in the authority of Christ’s cross. Amen.”

Every congregation possesses the office of the keys, that is, the power to retain and forgive sins. This authority was not provided for the sake of power as the world sees it, but as a spiritual power to provide the full gifts of Christ to repentant sinners. We believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, when they forgive and retain sins, it is as certain as it would be from God Himself. We receive this Word with joyful hearts as He works through His people to provide assurance of His salvation.

Sat, 02 May 2026 - 54min - 555 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 3 (#12-21)
The testimony of Scripture and the early Church do not support the Roman Bishop’s sole authority over the universal Church. Not only would it be impossible for one man to oversee every church, ordination, and doctrinal issue, but Scripture shows us that hope for the Church is founded in Christ’s oversight. When interpreting Matthew 16:18, “upon this rock”, the emphasis was not on Peter, but on the Church’s confession of the salvific work of Christ for the entire world.

Sat, 25 Apr 2026 - 56min - 554 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 2 (#1-11)
The papacy claims that one man is above all other pastors, his authority is in both Church and state, and everyone must acknowledge his authority in the Church in order to receive salvation. Melancthon carefully addresses each of these claims according to Scripture while acknowledging the inconsistencies found in the Church’s history. It is written by the LORD that each pastor is on equal footing, their ministry is that of service, and the Church has the authority by God’s Word. “Lord help us to live according to Your Word and confess the Truth, nothing more—nothing less. Amen.”

Sat, 18 Apr 2026 - 56min - 553 - Power and Primacy of the Pope, Introduction and Part 1
In 1537, Philip Melancthon addressed the erroneous belief that the Papacy was required for salvation. The Gospel is not dependent on a certain human bureaucracy but only on the merits of Christ. The Pope is famously referred to as the Anti-Christ, which is difficult for our modern ears to hear; however, as we believe in the Truth of God’s Word, we confess to our hope being dependent on the cross and Christ’s empty tomb.

Sat, 11 Apr 2026 - 55min - 552 - Review of the Large Catechism: History and Impact
The Large Catechism was written like a sermon for the instruction of pastors and the laity. Almost 500 years later, the Church continues to be blessed by the simple, yet robust teaching as it preserves the Truth for generations to come. God’s Word forms the foundation of each part of the Catechism so that every person who reads, marks, and inwardly digests these riches always asks, “Is that being confessed according to the Word of God?” May the Lord bear fruit by His Word.
Rev. Dr. John Maxfield, Professor of History and Religious Studies, Concordia University, Edmonton, Alberta, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to review the Large Catechism.

Sat, 04 Apr 2026 - 56min - 551 - The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 4
The Lord’s Supper is the true body and blood of your Lord Jesus Christ, under the bread and wine, given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. In this holy Sacrament, Christ graciously delivers to believers all the treasures of heaven: forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. He invites weary sinners to come and find rest in Him. This gift is holy, divine, and given for you. We need not fear the Sacrament, for Christ’s body and blood are wholesome, pure, and comforting. They bring the fullness of His salvation, not judgment, to those who receive them in faith. As we examine ourselves, we repent and receive His gifts with joy. Christ Himself makes you worthy through His cross.

Sat, 28 Mar 2026 - 58min - 550 - The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 3
“Do this in remembrance of me” is a gracious invitation for the New Adam. As disciples of Christ, we joyfully receive this gift for forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. In faith, we receive the Lord’s Supper often, not making excuses, but clinging to the promises of Christ. Following His command to receive this gift, we examine our hearts and consciences and seek to be right with God. He gives Himself and we feast, knowing that it feeds our souls for nourishment to eternity.

Sat, 21 Mar 2026 - 55min - 549 - The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 2
The body and blood of Christ is food for the soul that nourishes and strengthens the new man. As the baptized endure through their battle with the old Adam and the devil, the Sacrament provides daily sustenance and strength. The fruit of the Sacrament of the Altar is the Gospel for the Christian so that we may grow in faith, love, and holiness. In faith, we receive peace with God through His forgiveness and are renewed to fulfill our vocations in His power.

Sat, 14 Mar 2026 - 56min - 548 - The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 1
We receive in the Sacrament exactly what Jesus tells us: the body and blood of Christ for our forgiveness. Martin Luther wanted to ensure that all who received the Sacrament understood and valued the gifts of Christ as they partook. He asked three important questions: What is the Lord’s Supper? What are the benefits? Who is to receive it? These questions are answered in a simple, thorough manner, not only to be faithful to the Word, but that everyone who comes to the altar may receive a clear conscience in Christ.

Sat, 07 Mar 2026 - 58min - 547 - Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 4
The Christian life is nothing other than a daily Baptism. Baptism does not just happen to us; by it, the Lord transforms us by death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). We walk in our Baptism each day by living in repentance and the gracious forgiveness found in Christ. The Lord enables our faith to flourish as we mortify the flesh (Romans 8:13), turning to Him and trusting that His forgiveness in Christ is ours. “God’s own child I gladly say it, I am baptized into Christ.” (LSB 594, st. 1)Rev. Sat, 28 Feb 2026 - 56min - 546 - Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 3
We believe that Baptism is for all ages. Since Baptism is commanded for all nations (Matthew 28:19) and gives us the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39), we trust in the power of the Word as opposed to ourselves. The Word has power whether a person is 99 years or one day old. The Word does not become inconsistent or incompatible due to our response. We baptize for the sake of following Christ’s command and receiving the benefits He gives—no matter the age! Thanks be to God for this inexpressible gift!Rev. Sat, 21 Feb 2026 - 55min - 545 - The Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 2
The power, work, profit, fruit, and purpose of Baptism is this—to save (Colossians 1:13-14; John 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21). The water is not mere water, but a life-giving fount for those who believe. Our identity is not as one who was baptized, but as one who is baptized into Christ and saved in body and soul. Although “new spirits” will desire to question the validity and efficacy of our Baptism, we cling to the simple Word of God and trust that His Word is beyond any human reason!Rev. Sat, 14 Feb 2026 - 56min - 544 - The Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 1
To understand Baptism is to keep the simple words of Scripture. Jesus commands Baptism (Matthew 28:19), Baptism is divine by water and the Word (Titus 3:5-8), Baptism brings salvation (Mark 16:6), and Jesus works through Baptism (Romans 6:1-4). In Baptism, we receive forgiveness, life, and salvation in Christ. Through the most powerful Triune name of the Lord, we have the assurance that His grace is sufficient.Rev. Sat, 07 Feb 2026 - 56min - 543 - The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 7th Petition
The devil is actively working in this world against the Word of God. He wants nothing more than for us to ignore the Word, hold onto a guilty conscience over our sins, and to question the full sufficiency of Christ’s cross. “Your will be done and not the devil’s!” is our prayer without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). The Lord gives us prayer as a gift to be able to say with confidence, “Amen”, knowing that His grace is sufficient.Rev. Bob Hiller, pastor of Community Lutheran Church, Escondido, CA, joins Rev. Temptations are always before us. Temptation comes through the world, the flesh, and the devil. Although Christians will be tempted until Christ returns or calls us home, Christ does not leave us defenseless. He provides us with the armor and weapons to fight and gives us the victory (Ephesians 6:10-18). While temptations face each one of us, the temptations themselves will vary for each person. It is for this reason that Jesus calls us back to Himself in prayer. The resurrected Lord has already won our victory!Rev. Samuel Bobby, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, joins Rev. As it states in Genesis 6:5, the intentions and “thoughts of [our] heart[s] [are] only evil continually.” Without Christ’s forgiveness, we are sorely lost, thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. As those who are redeemed, we cling to the promise of His mercy and go joyfully to Him in prayer with nothing but the certain knowledge of the forgiveness of sins. We receive this forgiveness on account of Christ, and it is on account of Him that we forgive others.Rev. Samuel Bobby, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, joins Rev. “Our daily bread” encompasses everything we need for our lives here on earth. We give thanks to the Lord for all He gives to sustain this life, and we seek His grace for continued provision. In this petition, Luther especially highlights the need for good government for the sake of peace and protection. We seek God’s will, but the devil’s will is the exact opposite. The Lord desires us to have no other gods; the devil’s will is that we have MANY gods. We look to the Lord for the Gospel, faith, and the Holy Spirit as we realize that there is a battle raging. An unbeliever has no battle because the Word is not heard, but for the baptized there is a struggle. The struggle, however, is not more powerful than the resurrected Lord! He is our refuge, strength, and ever-present help in trouble. We come to Him in prayer and utilize His armor to stay steadfast in Christ. (Ephesians 6:10-18).Rev. We ask for God’s kingdom to come among us. Where you find the kingdom, there you find the King (Jesus). Where you find the King (Jesus), there you find the kingdom. We ask that He would give us His Holy Spirit to believe His Word. An earthly kingdom is found by the work of its people and by force. God’s kingdom is found by the work of God in Christ and by His grace. His kingdom is seen now by the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. Prayer is filled with promise. The Lord hears and answers us according to His gracious will. He provides us with the gift of the Lord’s Prayer, that we may confidently come to Him, knowing He will give us what we need. Our shelter and protection rests in our prayers as a weapon against the devil and the sinful world, not because of the prayers themselves, but because of the power of the One who hears. The Holy Spirit makes one holy by His Word. Sanctification is the understanding that the Holy Spirit makes us holy and leads us to live a holy life. The Spirit creates faith in Christ and then gathers His people into the Church. In this Church, He continues to bring salvation to sinners by the Word and still makes them holy. This holiness is brought by the clear proclamation of forgiveness in Christ (Word and Sacrament). “O Holy Spirit enter in, that Your people confess Christ as Lord, and they gather around Your gifts. Amen.”Rev. Nathan Scheck, Associate Pastor of St. John Lutheran, Seward, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 3rd Article of the Apostles’ Creed. To learn more about St. John Lutheran, visit stjohnseward.org/home/church.Find your copy of the Book of Concord - Concordia Reader's Edition at cph.org or read online at bookofconcord.org.Study the Lutheran Confession of Faith found in the Book of Concord with lively discussions led by host Rev. Jesus Christ is Lord. To be Lord is to redeem sinners from the devil, death, and all evil. We commonly hear the question, “Is Jesus your Savior AND your Lord?” Luther makes sure that we do not distinguish between Jesus’ salvation and His lordship but helps us realize that He is the full meal deal of forgiveness, life, and salvation. Jesus is our Savior and our Lord. He has made us His own, and we follow Him as He governs us by His righteousness, wisdom, power, life, and blessedness.Rev. God the Father created heaven and earth; nothing and no one else is equal to Him. He constantly preserves us in all that we need to support this body and life. We humbly receive all that He gives and remember that He protects us from evil out Fatherly goodness and mercy. “Lord God, open our eyes that, in faith, we may remember that all we possess is a gift from You and give thanks for your goodness. Help us to steward your gifts so that all our doings and life may be pleasing to You. Lord have mercy. Amen.”Rev. Peter Schmidt, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Waukesha, WI, joins Rev. Sat, 25 Oct 2025 - 54min - 530 - The Large Catechism: The Apostles’ Creed: Introduction
The Creed confesses the truth of who God is (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and what He does (creates, redeems, and sanctifies). We can know the Lord fully (Ephesians 3:19) through the Creed, which provides a foundation that unites all Christians in the truth of Scripture. We see how we will receive power to fulfill these commands—only by God’s grace. We assert what God has provided in Scripture and leave what is not said to Him.Rev. Dr. Jason Lane, Associate Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, joins Rev. Sat, 18 Oct 2025 - 53min - 529 - The Large Catechism: The Commandments: Conclusion
The 10 Commandments are a true guide for believers in living according to God’s will as people redeemed by Christ. Luther warns against “self-made” commandments and instead uplifts the holiness of ordinary vocations. To fear and love God means more than awe or dread—it is recognizing that He is God and we are not! The Lord is a jealous God—One who desires all of us to be with Him. He provides us with the 10 Commandments to demonstrate that He has laid claim to us, both for our protection, and to teach us how to glorify His name in word and deed.Rev. Sat, 11 Oct 2025 - 53min - 528 - The Large Catechism: 9th and 10th Commandments
The LORD gets right to the heart of the issues of stealing, adultery, and a whole slew of sins: coveting. Human instinct is to ensure that no one will have as much or more than me. Luther exhorts us to not only repent of these covetous thoughts, but to assist our neighbor in protecting and caring for his possessions. We see this commandment most often broken during disputes over inheritances and possessions. The heart always desires more, and if we can acquire said possessions in ways that the world sees as “fine,” we can easily justify our actions instead of making sure we protect and enable our neighbor to keep what is his. “Lord have mercy and help us to serve others and give thanks for what You have given us. Amen.”Rev. John Zimmerman, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scranton, PA and St. John Lutheran Church, Pittston, PA, joins Rev. Sat, 04 Oct 2025 - 55min - 527 - The Large Catechism: 8th Commandment, Part 2
There is nothing in a person that can do greater and more extensive good or harm in spiritual health and temporal matters than the tongue. The Christian is called to keep control of his tongue, no matter what kind of opportunity arises to slander a friend or foe. We pray for those in offices needing to call out sins for the sake of good order (judges, police, doctors) and people’s spiritual welfare (pastors). When sin does occur, God has provided us guidance in the words of Matthew 18:15-20—not for the sake of gossip, but for the spiritual welfare of those redeemed by Christ!Rev. Sat, 27 Sep 2025 - 56min - 526 - The Large Catechism: 8th Commandment
The LORD desires that our neighbor’s honor and good reputation be upheld. Therefore, He gives the 8th commandment so that everyone would be able to stand with integrity before others. Unfortunately, our tongues do not need a training program on how to lie, slander, or hurt the reputation of others. The Old Adam is naturally able to do these things and needs to be put to death by contrition and repentance. By God’s grace, we receive forgiveness by the blood of Christ, and by the help of the Holy Spirit, He gives us what we need to defend and speak well of our neighbor in the kindest way.Rev. Sat, 20 Sep 2025 - 57min - 525 - The Large Catechism: 7th Commandment
The Lord wants people’s possessions to be protected. Not only are we not to take someone’s property, but we are not to cheat our employers, customers, or neighbors. Luther rightly speaks of the world as a “vast, wide sales booth, full of great thieves” and warns us that we are unable to hide our sins from God. This commandment is not a joke, but God’s will. We seek the Lord’s forgiveness by the blood of Christ and ask for the Holy Spirit to lead us in finding ways to protect our neighbors’ possessions and income.Rev. Marriage is an institution created by God for the enjoyment of a husband and wife, the raising of children, and the edification of society. After being married for four years, Luther teaches the honor of this commandment and clearly confesses the trauma that occurs when it is broken. May the Lord help us to uplift the union of husband and wife while providing robust, Christ-centered care when this commandment is broken. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.Rev. Sat, 06 Sep 2025 - 54min - 523 - The Large Catechism: 5th Commandment
The 5th commandment not only forbids taking the life of another human being but also condemns anger and hatred toward our neighbor. God knows that the world is evil and desires to restrain violence before it occurs. This commandment addresses more than sinful actions—it also calls out our failure to help the least of these (Matthew 25:31-46). God desires hands that are full of good works, depending on the One who rejoices when our neighbor is served in faith.Rev. Obedience to the 4th commandment would bring abundant provision for all. Yet, we esteem His Word as if a simple peddler had spoken it. The Lord gives us both fathers by blood and spiritual fathers. Spiritual fathers, that is, pastors, are given the least amount of honor, despite the clear words of Scripture (1 Timothy 5:17-18). The following of this command is dependent upon families faithfully catechizing their children in the honor required toward parents. The Lord will bless this teaching for well-educated, humble, and faithful children. The Lord grant it! Rev. Ben Meyer, pastor at Hope Lutheran Church, Sunbury, OH, joins Rev. If we obey the LORD by offering love and service to our parents and others in authority, there will be blessings. However, if we offend the LORD and do not follow His will, there will be anarchy. This honor is to be extended to civil government, where the LORD has placed officials into their respective offices. Although there may not be agreement on the policies these officials establish, we still honor them as those who keep order in our land. Lord have mercy!

Sat, 16 Aug 2025 - 56min - 520 - Large Catechism: 4th Commandment, Part 1
The 4th commandment begins the second table of the law. The first three commandments deal with our relationship with the Triune God, while commandments 4-10 focus our attention on our neighbor. The 4th commandment is the only commandment with a promise. “You shall honor your father and your mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long upon the earth.” We are reminded that the vocation of parent is a high calling, and the vocation of honoring parents is to be fulfilled with the holiest responsibility. We are to hold parents and other authorities in distinction and esteem, speak modestly to them, and show honor in service to them as God’s representatives on earth.

Sat, 09 Aug 2025 - 57min - 519 - The Large Catechism: 3rd Commandment, Part 2
To make the Sabbath holy is to keep God’s Word at the center of it. Without the Word, all well-intentioned work or observances cannot be holy. God’s Word is the treasure that sanctifies everything, especially God’s people (1 Timothy 4:5, 1 Corinthians 6:11). As we live in the devil’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13-14), we must keep the Sabbath by always having the Word in our hearts, upon our lips, and in our ears.

Luther reminds us that people must have a holiday, that is, to “cease from labor.” Yet, while the Sabbath is meant for rest, it is not just rest from work, but rest in Christ. The Sabbath is to be made holy by occupation with holy words, works, and life. This Sabbath is not restricted to a particular day or time but is grounded in Christ who is the Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8).

The 2nd commandment directs our mouths and tongues toward God. It does not take long to see how the Lord’s name is misused, but the biggest offense is when false preachers offer lies in place of God’s Word. The Christian is called to not only deny such offensive words, but to call upon the LORD in the day of trouble and pray, praise, and give thanks. We pray for our pastors, teachers, and workers, that they might speak God’s Word faithfully and fulfill this command to His glory.

God is merciful, even if the world does not see it. Luther highlights the explanation as a reminder that the consequences of following other gods are eternal. Although it may seem that the world is prospering without faith in the Triune God, God is working good for His people according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). We are to expect only what God promises to give and know that as the tomb is empty and Christ reigns on high, our hearts can trust in Him and Him alone.

A god is whatever we depend on for all good and seek for refuge in distress. One can believe that such good comes from the Triune God, or one could seek it elsewhere. What is your god? Luther warns of mammon, people, skill, power, friendship, and pride. Each of these can easily become a god. However, we know from Scripture that all that is good is from God (Mark 10:18). He is the One who gives us food, drink, nourishment, health, protection, peace, and everything else we need to support this body and life. The objects themselves are not God, but flow from the generosity of the One who gives us all things in Christ (Colossians 1:15-20).

Sat, 28 Jun 2025 - 55min - 513 - The Large Catechism: Shorter Preface
Short, concise, teachable, and robust in theology. This is the essence of Martin Luther’s catechisms. Luther was committed to ensuring that the Christian faith was taught in homes, which would then edify the life of the Church in the body of Christ. Every Christian should be able to recite by heart the ten commandments, the Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer before receiving the Lord’s Supper, along with keeping the plain texts of the Sacraments. These teachings are enough for every Christian to read, mark, and inwardly digest for a lifetime, as we learn the depth of God’s grace for Christ’s sake.

Martin Luther wrote the Large Catechism for the sake of families teaching the faith in the home and for pastors to faithfully preach the Word. While reading and reciting the small catechism is beneficial to learn the basics of the faith, it is also edifying for as we receive the Holy Spirit by God’s Word, protection against Satan, and following the will of God.

Our hope is in Christ alone. Any promotion of works for salvation is blasphemy. No matter how impressive the music, smells, bells, or works, no one can find their final comfort in these things. When Luther completed the Smalcald Articles, there were forty-two other confessors of the faith who subscribed to his teachings. We continue to confess the same words because they are in accordance with God’s Word, providing the full assurance of forgiveness in Christ and Christ alone!

The Church is simple: believers gathered to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. The holiness of those who gather is fully dependent on the Word by faith in Christ’s forgiveness, not on ceremonies. Although our salvation is not dependent on works, faith in Christ has a natural outflow of good works. The Church, that is, believers in Christ, are to make their boast in the Lord and follow His will.

Sat, 31 May 2025 - 54min - 509 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Articles 10 & 11: Ordination and Marriage of Priests
The qualifications for an overseer in Christ’s Church are very clear (see 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1). He is to be above reproach, soberminded, self-controlled, gentle, well-thought-of, and the husband of one wife. Therefore, we believe that pastors are allowed to marry. The distinction between a pastor and bishop is not one of hierarchical power, but of servanthood to God’s people. The Roman Church began utilizing bishops to gain power, rather than for the care of souls. Because of this, we understand that all qualified candidates for the pastoral office may be ordained by other pastors.

Sat, 24 May 2025 - 55min - 508 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Articles 8 & 9: Confession and Excommunication
The Office of the Keys is an aid to all believers in the battle against sin and provides consolation for those with a guilty conscience. The Roman Church taught that those who confessed all their sins to a confessor would find comfort. Enthusiasts looked within for a good conscience, apart from the Word of God. However, we know that God does not deal with us in any way other than through His spoken Word and Sacraments. By this same Word, the binding key is meant to call sinners to repentance in the promise of reconciliation in Christ. “Lord God, bring us to repentance by Your Holy Spirit and drive us back to Christ for His forgiveness through our pastor as from Christ Himself. Lord have mercy. Amen.”

Sat, 17 May 2025 - 59min - 507 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Articles 6 & 7: Sacrament of the Altar and the Keys
The Sacrament of the Altar and the Office of the Keys were sticking points for many in the Church during the 1530s and still are today. In addressing these doctrines, the Concordians made sure their words were very clear: Christ has given us these gifts to be faithfully given to sinners. Misunderstandings about Christ’s presence in the Sacrament, overly sophisticated thought on how the Sacrament is Christ’s body, and confusion over who can forgive sins remain common today, calling for a return to the clear words of Christ.

Sat, 10 May 2025 - 56min - 506 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Articles 4 & 5: The Gospel and Baptism
The Gospel is God’s work through Christ’s death and resurrection for the sake of our forgiveness, life, and salvation. This Gospel is lavishly generous with His gifts: spoken Word, Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar, the Office of the Keys, and the mutual consolation of the saints. By His grace, God provides these gifts, so that His people might receive this undeserved salvation.

Sat, 03 May 2025 - 54min - 505 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Article 3: Repentance, Part 2
Repentance apart from Christ leads only to death. The Roman church had a very detailed system of repentance: contrition, confession, and satisfaction. Although the system was well defined, the premise for it began with the misunderstanding that a person could make their own satisfaction for sins. Yet we know that only Christ makes satisfaction for our sins, and, in faith, we confess, knowing that Christ truly forgives our sins on account of His cross. Sin always remains in us, but in Christ, it never reigns over us!
Rev. Brian Kachelmeier, pastor at Crown of Life Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study of repentance in the Smalcald.

Sat, 26 Apr 2025 - 57min - 504 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Article 3: Repentance, Part 1
Repentance has two parts: first, contrition—sorrow for sin—and second, faith in the Gospel. The Lord delivers His Law as a thunderbolt and hammer, striking the heart and stirring it toward newness of life. True contrition is not merely sorrow for sin but the realization that we deserve death because of it. In faith, we repent, knowing that there is One who will save us from this body of death. The goal of repentance is always forgiveness and hope in Christ. God calls us to repentance, daring us to believe that He will give exactly what He promises: forgiveness, life, and salvation in Christ.

Sat, 19 Apr 2025 - 52min - 503 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Article 2: Law
The chief power of the Law is to reveal original sin with all its fruit. We know how low our human nature has fallen in that we need the Law to increase our trespass (Romans 5:20), so as not to harden our hearts. The Law shows us our sin, restrains us from sin, and in Christ by the help of the Holy Spirit, enables us to live a holy life. “Lord God, show us our sin that we may bear fruit of repentance and believe in Christ’s forgiveness. Amen.”

Sat, 05 Apr 2025 - 46min - 501 - Smalcald Articles: Part 3, Article 1: Sin
If we are not dead in our sins, Christ died in vain. The corruption of humankind is so deep that our only hope is a full resurrection (Romans 6:1-4). The Roman Church in Luther’s day taught that individuals had the power to observe God’s commands and love Him, without the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. Yet, all that the human heart can give is more evil deeds (pride, despair, lying, abusing God’s name, disobedience, murder, stealing, and deception). Luther brings us back to the basics, revealing the real purpose for which Christ came: to die for sinners (1 Timothy 1:15).

Sat, 29 Mar 2025 - 57min - 500 - Preface to the Smalcald Articles
The Roman Church suggested the possibility of convening a Free Council to allow the broader Church to address the issues at hand, but they ultimately postponed any such gathering. Luther wrote the Smalcald Articles to call their bluff and provide the simple truths of Scripture one last time. He ends his preface in prayer, seeking the Lord’s help to address false doctrine. May we do the same today!

Sat, 22 Mar 2025 - 55min - 499 - Smalcald Articles: Part 2, Article 4: The Papacy
The office of the papacy is not mandated in Scripture. In fact, the pope of Luther’s day was demanding obedience to the Church, not by a mandate from the Word of God, but by the power of his position. Luther, on the other hand, proclaimed the unity we have in the one name of Christ. We are united in His name through doctrine, faith, sacraments, prayer, and mercy to others. To grant any person or object the same or greater authority than Christ Himself is the definition of idolatry and is unacceptable in the Church. Christ is the head of the Church. We submit to Him and Him alone!

Sat, 22 Mar 2025 - 57min - 498 - Smalcald Articles: Part 2, Article 3: Chapters & Cloisters
The Church is entrusted with forming servants for faithful service in God’s kingdom. Monasteries were established to provide men and women with a way to live out their baptismal identity through service in the Church and their daily vocations. However, over time, they came to be seen as a means of earning forgiveness and attaining a holier life. At the heart of the issue was the Gospel—if we seek assurance of salvation outside of Christ, we lose the essence of the Christian faith. As members of His Church, we are called to live in community with fellow believers, bearing with one another in love and serving others as Christ first served us.

Sat, 15 Mar 2025 - 56min - 497 - Smalcald Articles: Part 2, Article 2: The Mass
Anything done in the Church that conflicts with the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world robs people of a clear conscience in Christ. The Church at the time of Luther had fallen into practices that were leading people away from the cross and empty tomb for full salvation: pilgrimages, monastic societies, relics, indulgences, and the invocation of saints. Luther spoke sharp admonition to the Church then and still does today, ensuring that we are following the clear commandments of the Lord and clearly confessing the pure Gospel of Christ.

Sat, 08 Mar 2025 - 57min - 496 - Smalcald Articles: Part 1 and The Chief Article
The Triune God is a Divine Majesty. We receive a glimpse of this majesty through the Word of God and learn how, in love, He saved us from our sins. Luther “begins at the beginning” with our God who created the heavens and the earth and then points us back to the Chief Article: that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised for our justification (Romans 4:24-25).

Sat, 01 Mar 2025 - 57min - 495 - Background of the Smalcald Articles
The Reformers found themselves in need of a clearer and more direct confession of the faith after controversy arose in Germany and the broader Church. Luther went straight to work. The Smalcald Articles were written as a clear, direct, and firm confession of the Christian faith. Luther was struggling with various health issues and wrote these articles as a kind of last will and testament of the faith. He worked with other confessors of the Smalcaldic League to clearly articulate and boldly proclaim the Word in truth and purity. May we do the same today!
Rev. Andy Wright, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church, Topeka, KS, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to discuss the background of the writing of the Smalcald Articles.

Sat, 15 Feb 2025 - 56min - 494 - Confessional Subscription in the AFLC
The AFLC and LCMS share several common Scriptural convictions: salvation in Christ alone, the inerrancy of Scripture, male-only pastors, the value of every human life, and conversion as being the work of the Holy Spirit. Yet, there are differences between them, which are manifested by the AFLC’s confessional subscription to only the Creed, Augsburg Confession, and Small Catechism. We pray for unity in the future, but also cling to the promises of God found in Scripture and clearly confessed in the entire Book of Concord.
Rev. Sam Wellumson, pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to discuss the confessional subscription of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations (AFLC).

Sat, 08 Feb 2025 - 52min - 493 - Confessional Subscription in the ELCA: Past & Present
When it comes to confessional subscription, it is important to know our history and understand the terminology that is used. Throughout the history of our country, Lutherans have asked the question, “What does it mean to be Lutheran in America?” The predecessors of the current Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) viewed the Augsburg Confession as being fully sufficient to answer this question. The Lutheran Church Missouri—Synod (LCMS), on the other hand, has centered on the entire Book of Concord, as it is in accord with God’s Word. These differences do have implications for theological integrity and understanding our need for a clear conscience in Christ, which is why we cling to the clarity that the Lutheran Confessions provide for us and continue to seek unity by His Word alone.
Rev. Dr. Mark Granquist, Professor of the History of Christianity at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to discuss the history of confessional subscription in American Lutheranism and the current view of the ELCA.

Sat, 01 Feb 2025 - 51min - 492 - Confessional Subscription: Why is a Quia Subscription Still Vital for the Church Today?
We believe, teach, and confess the Book of Concord because it is in accord with the Word of God. It is vital that the Church still confess this Truth today, as it leaves us no wiggle room to invent our own ideas. The authority for this is founded in the Divine Scriptures as Jesus tells us, “You will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free (John 8:32).” The Concordians were not writing to create a general guide to the Bible, but because they believed that these writings were the true Word of God! “O Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word. Give us Your Holy Spirit to keep us in the Truth and to confess it in purity. Lord have mercy. Amen.”
Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison, President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to discuss why a Quia subscription is still important for the 21st century Church.

Sat, 25 Jan 2025 - 54min - 491 - Confessional Subscription: What is Quia?
Our congregations, pastors, workers, and schools confess the entire Book of Concord because it is in accord with the Word of God. The Latin word, “Quia,” expresses a commitment to not only believe that the Lutheran Confessions are in agreement with the inerrant Word, but also to teach, preach, and administer the sacraments according to these confessions. The Lutheran Confessions bring clarity to the Word of God for the sake of Truth and a clear conscience to all who hear the Word.

Sat, 18 Jan 2025 - 56min - 490 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 28. Church Authority
By what authority do our pastors do their work? By what authority does the government do its work? The Church has full authority from the Lord to give a clear conscience to burdened sinners simply through preaching the Gospel and administrating the sacraments. This authority does not mean that there is no need for good order or that Christians should neglect involvement in government affairs, but we do need constant exhortation for the Church to be faithful stewards of His mysteries. The Church’s one foundation, Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation, By water and the Word. From heav'n He came and sought her, To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.LSB 644, st. 1

God calls us as His baptized children to serve our neighbor in our vocations. Monasticism led people to understand that perfection is found in poverty, vows, selling possessions, chastity, and leaving their daily vocations. Perfection is not found in such outward actions, but by faith in the actions of Christ. “Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness; My beauty are, my glorious dress; Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head.”LSB 563, st. 1

Sat, 21 Dec 2024 - 56min - 488 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 27. Monastic Vows, Part 1
A casual look at monastic life will often leave us with a favorable impression: chastity, obedience, service of the neighbor, poverty, and prayer— what could be wrong with these things? However, if one is looking for justification or perfection in such a lifestyle, they will never be satisfied (Galatians 5:14). The Roman Church outrightly rejected the Augsburg Confession’s declaration that monasticism does not merit the forgiveness of sins. Melancthon breaks down the Biblical truth of how one merits forgiveness. It is only by faith in Christ— to add any of our works into the equation does away from the full sufficiency of the cross. “Just as I am, without one plea- But that Thy blood was shed for me. And that Thou bidds’t me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.” LSB 570, st. 1

To participate in the Mass is to receive the gifts of Christ and give a sacrifice of praise for all the blessings He gives. The primary mover in a worship service is not a pastor or the people, but Christ Himself, pouring out forgiveness, life, and salvation on our behalf. Sat, 07 Dec 2024 - 58min - 486 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 24. The Mass, Part 3
The Mass is a gift. The Lord gives us the preaching of His Word, devout use of the Sacraments, and fervent prayer. These gifts are not salvific by our outward acts of performing them; however, in faith, we receive forgiveness, life, and salvation. Melancthon breaks down the proper understanding of sacrifice and the sacrament for the sake of providing a clear conscience for believers in the cross of Christ. We simply receive the Gospel, which is not measured, but pressed down and overflowing.

Sat, 30 Nov 2024 - 57min - 485 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 24. The Mass, Part 2
What does Scripture say about sacrifice? There are two kinds of sacrifices found in the New Testament: atoning sacrifice, and eucharistic sacrifice. The one and final atoning sacrifice was accomplished by Christ’s life, death, and resurrection for the sins of the whole world. Eucharistic sacrifices are done by those who are reconciled to God in Christ, giving thanks for their salvation and serving others. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1).

Sat, 23 Nov 2024 - 58min - 484 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 24. The Mass, Part 1
The Concordians had no desire to abolish the Mass. When one looks at the order of the Mass in the Catholic Church, and then compares it to the Divine Service of the Concordians, there is not much difference. The greatest difference came in the understanding of sacrifice and in the use of the German language. Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient; therefore, we proclaim the Truth of His forgiveness, life, and salvation (Luke 24:44-47). As people hear the Word, it is important that they understand the Word in their own language (Romans 10:17).
Rev. Dr. Jason Lane, Associate Professor of Historical Theology, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin a study on the Mass.

Sat, 16 Nov 2024 - 56min - 483 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 23. The Marriage of Priests, Part 2
The history of Pontifical Law forbade the marriage of priests due to a revelation from God; however, such a revelation is not found in Scripture. As Christians, our faith is founded in God’s Word alone. We give thanks to the Lord for the gift of marriage and seek His blessing upon our pastors’ families to live in the faith, hope, and love of Christ.
Rev. Matthew Moss, St. John Lutheran Church, Corcoran, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study on the marriage of priests.

Sat, 09 Nov 2024 - 57min - 482 - Apology of the Augsburg Confession: Article 23. The Marriage of Priests, Part 1
The Lord has designed humanity to be fruitful, and that one sex should desire the other in a proper way. While the Office of the Ministry is a high calling, there is no mandate which states that overseers should be “married to the Church.” Melancthon’s concern was that believers would take a good gift of God and call it unholy. Everything begins with His good and divine ordinance (Genesis 1:28). When we go against His natural order, chaos ensues. There are those who are called to a single, chaste life; however, it is not to mandated on God’s people (1 Corinthians 7). Lord, have mercy on the Church to lead a sexually pure and holy life.
Rev. Benjamin Meyer, Hope Lutheran Church, Sunberry, OH, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the Scriptural truth on the marriage of priests.
