Mon, 31 Oct 2022 - 149 - Is it possible to speak like a NATIVE SPEAKER?
This episode of English with Dane is about something I think a lot of people need to hear. It's a topic that always seems to come up in different ways and so I wanted to share my thoughts on it. It's the idea of speaking like a native speaker. I think a lot of people have this as a goal when learning/practicing English and I'm not sure if is a healthy one. Are you setting yourself up to fail? Is it even achievable? Is it really important? This episode is about trying to answer these questions. Plus, we'll also take a look at to burn out, a phrasal verb that has also been coming up a lot in my life and which I also think is important for you to be aware of, not just from an English-speaking perspective, but from a general mental health perspective too. Tue, 23 Aug 2022 - 145 - How many words do you need to know?
How many words do you need to know to understand a language? Many students have asked me this and I'm sure it's also a question you have asked yourself at times. This episode is an answer to that question. I found an article by the BBC that I think is very interesting and that answers this question pretty well, so I thought I would share. It turns outthat (resulta que) if we know the 800 most frequently used word families (listen to the episode to find out what a family is), we can understand 75% of everyday speech. But, it gets more complicated than that. Check out the episode and let me know what you think!

Mon, 25 Apr 2022 - 141 - 5 Practical Phrasal Verbs with IN
Phrasal verbs are a great way to become more fluent in English but people often shy away (phrasal verb alert) from learning them because they can be frustrating. I think the reason for this frustration is the fact they learn long lists of phrasal verbs that are often out of context, and therefore difficult to remember and even more difficult to use efficiently. That's why in this episode of English with Dane, we'll take a look at 5 practical phrasal verbs with "in" and make sure you understand them and can use them as soon as you're finished listening. This time we're taking a look at chip in / burst in / chime in / sink in & break in. So sit back and listen to episode 140 of English with Dane. Hit it!

This is a special episode because I had a chance to sit down and have a chat with my new friend Sam. We also talk about more stuff too, so listen to the episode and find out.
I met Mario towards the end of summer and we hit it off (that's a good expression). We got along right away, basically. I thought it was really interesting that his English was so good and I assumed he had spent time living in an English-speaking country and when I asked him and found out he had never, I was pretty shocked. Mon, 25 Oct 2021 - 124 - Phrasal Verbs with UP
Here we go again with more phrasal verbs! After episode 121 (What are Phrasal Verbs and How to Learn Them) I realized it would be much better to group phrasal verbs by particle (UP) instead of the main verb, so this episode is about exactly that. I'll talk about different phrasal verbs with UP, and give you a few meanings for each so you can practice them and incorporate them into your day-to-day because that's what it's about. Today's phrasal verbs are: turn up, give up, heat up and put up with. Remember, it's not about learning everything at once, but about feeling comfortable and confident with using what you learn. Tue, 19 Oct 2021 - 123 - How to Increase Your Vocabulary in English
This episode has been a long time coming. This is a question I often get from students, and so I've put this episode together to answer it. There's no real difference between increasing your vocabulary in English and in your native language, but when it comes to a second language, the effort needs to be more present. I feel that a lot of you are experiencing a lack of confidence when it comes to speaking English because you feel like you're going to get stuck mid-sentence and not know how to continue. Well, this episode will help you combat that feeling, but you have to put in the time yourself. Remember, there are no miracle methods to this, just time, attention, and a little bit of proactiveness. So, let me know if these strategies work for you!
Thu, 14 Oct 2021 - 122 - What Are Phrasal Verbs and How to Learn Them
This might seem like a basic episode (or not) but I think it's a necessary one. I get a lot of questions about phrasal verbs from a variety of students, beginners and more advanced ones too, so I thought I would address those questions with an episode dedicated specifically to what they are, and more importantly: how to learn them. This episode includes three practical tips to make your life easier when it comes to learning phrasal verbs, while at the same time comforting those of you who feel frustrated by them, and have decided to leave them somewhere in the back of your mind. Phrasal verbs are super useful and actually kind of fun to discover, so listen to this episode and enjoy a fresh, renewed approach. Let me know how it goes.
Thu, 07 Oct 2021 - 121 - The Guide to "GET"
GET ready! GET a pen and paper and take notes because it's GETTING real. 😂 All jokes aside, this is a topic that a lot of English learners have a difficult time with, so here's a quick guide on how to use the verb to get. This episode was inspired by Maura who is one of my Patrons and with whom I had a long conversation with last week. She told me it's hard to wrap her head around (good expression there) the concept, so hopefully this will help clear up any doubts you had.
Wed, 29 Sep 2021 - 120 - Should I be Studying Grammar?
An important episode in which I address, or talk about, a question I get asked very often about studying grammar and how important it is. Over the last year or so, I've noticed some teachers preaching to disregard, or not care about, grammar when trying to level up your English and while there is some good that can come out of this approach, I think it's restrictive and can hurt your development in the long run. It's better to understand guidelines and then choose to ignore them, than to ignore them in the first place. I know everyone is different and everyone has a learning style that suits them, but this episode is my two cents (good idiom there) on the matter. Let me know what you think about the subject.

It's been a while since I did one of these movie reviews so let's see how it goes. You guys voted on Instagram and Moview Review won so here it is. I reviewed the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad which I watched a few weeks back. Maybe it's not the movie you want to talk about, but really, the point is to arm you with the tools (darte las herramientas) to talk about your favorite (or not) movies with friends, colleagues, or whoever you're chatting to at the time. So I hope this episode does exactly that. If you haven't watched the movie yet, then SPOILER ALERT. If you don't really care about the movie and you're probably never going to watch it, then go ahead! Let me know what you think!
Tue, 31 Aug 2021 - 116 - How to Be Yourself In English
What's up? What's going on? This episode of English with Dane was inspired by a conversation I had with a listener over Instagram. I found myself giving him advice on how to improve, how to take that next step and I'm pretty sure it was motivated by him saying he wants to talk like ME one day. I answered that I would prefer if he spoke like himself (but in English) and after thinking about it for a few days, I thought it would be useful to record an episode about this idea of "being yourself in English". It seems like a straightforward thing, something that is clear and simple, but it made me really think. This episode has good vocab and stuff like that, but it's more of a philosophical episode, with advice mixed in. Let me know if it was useful for you. Enjoy!

Mon, 19 Jul 2021 - 113 - The Comfort Zone
This episode of English with Dane is about the Comfort Zone and the role it plays in English-Learning, and well, in everything we do really. I think that oftentimes, we become comfortable in our routine, in our choices, jobs, etc and we forget to push ourselves to grow and really enjoy ourselves on our way to becoming who we want to be. This is not a grammar-heavy episode, but as always, there are some great new words to incorporate into your arsenal. The goal for this episode is to get you thinking about your own comfort zone and how to push yourself, in a way that works for you, or maybe even better: in a way that doesn't, to break out and get to where you want to be.

So over the last few weeks, I've come across a few verbs in English that are probably lesser-known (menos conodidos) and could potentially confuse you if you've never encountered them before. I wrote them down and here they are. I think you'll enjoy these, and I hope you can incorporate them into your day-to-day. Plus, they'll make you sound smarter and more fluent, which is always cool. Don't stress out about learning and using all of these, because as always, the goal is to be aware of them and not to force them into conversations.
This episode covers 6 verbs, but more than 6 definitions. I want to say that these are NOT all the possible definitions, but I didn't want to get carried away (no me quise dejar llevar). So, sit back and listen to this episode of English with Dane and as always, I hope it helps!

Another conversation episode! I really enjoy these episodes because I get to sit down with someone and just chat for a while. We don't talk about english-learning really, but that's by design. I think it's more important to be able to talk about anything and everything and to get used to the pace and production style of different native speakers. Don't worry if you don't understand everything. Don't worry if you only understand 60% or 40%. It's more about being comfortable with the discomfort that a fast-paced conversation can provoke. I´ll pause once in a while to explain vocabulary or expressions that we use throughout the conversation, so just sit back and listen.
DaneMon, 14 Jun 2021 - 109 - Animal-Related Idioms in English
Back-to-back episodes of idioms? Yup. You wanted them, so you get them! This time I'm covering animal-related idioms and I promise there will be at least one that you'll be using in no time. Idioms are a great way to express yourself in a casual way, but a word of caution: don't overuse them. It sounds really weird when people overuse idioms. You have to sprinkle them in once in a while. You'll know when the moment is right, so don't force it. It's better to internalize the meanings of each idiom so you can use them once in a while, rather than just trying to fit them in whenever you speak. A good first step is listening to this episode and choosing one or two that you like, or maybe the ones that stick out to you. Anyway, check out the episode and let me know what you think.

As always, it's more about being aware of them, hearing them and understanding them, and eventually, incorporating them into your day-to-day speech. Learning comes in phases so don't get down if you can't incorporate these expressions right away. It's a whole process. I'm back in the house with some COMMON MISTAKES! Some of these you might be making, others perhaps not, but this episode is really about "mistake awareness" rather than "stop making these mistakes!" I think sometimes we're too hard on ourselves and we don't live up to our potential, in fear of making mistakes. So, if you take anything away from this episode, I hope it's that. Give it a listen and take your awareness up a notch (a notch is "an indentation or incision on an edge or surface", but in this case it just kind of means "level". So, take your awareness to the next level is what I'm trying to say.

This episode is a bit of a different one. I had the idea for this episode while answering my friend Pablo's questions via What's App and thought it would be a fun thing to do. I get a good amount of questions from friends (mostly Pablo) and I love it. Sometimes you don't get a good idea of how to use a word, expression, idiom, or whatever by just going to google and getting the definition. Sometimes it's better to hear it from someone who uses that word or expression regularly and has grown up hearing it in various contexts and situations. Also, I love helping friends because it feels really good. So, now that you know what this episode is about, let's jump in. You are listening to episode 102 of English with Dane. Hit it!
