- 685 - BITESIZE | The Truth About Stress: How to Reduce Overwhelm & Feel Calmer Every Day | Dr Rangan Chatterjee #682
What has the biggest impact on your health and happiness today? Perhaps you’re thinking it’s work, money, what you eat, how you sleep… Maybe it’s your friends and family and how you interact with them… These are all valid answers. But let me put it to you that I think there’s one factor that is linked to, but overrides, all of these things: stress. Today’s Bitesize is from episode 607 of the podcast which was a solo episode I recorded all about stress. While some stress is just part of life, if it starts to accumulate it can have negative consequences for our health and happiness. I explain what stress is, how “micro stress doses” can build up and impact on our lives, and I share some simple strategies that can help you de-stress and re-set your day. I genuinely hope this episode helps you see stress differently and reminds you that small, consistent changes can have a profound impact. A little stress is part of life – but chronic stress doesn’t have to be. In my free guide, Break Free From Stress, I share three simple tools you can start using today to calm your nervous system and feel more in control - https://drchatterjee.com/FeelCalmer Thanks to our sponsor https://heights.com/livemore Show notes and the full podcast are available at drchatterjee.com/607 Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Thu, 24 Sep 2026 - 684 - Protect Your Brain, Extend Your Life: 7 Mistakes to Avoid for Better Cognitive Health with Dr Tommy Wood #681
Why would you want to live longer, if not to spend more time with the people you love? That question sits at the heart of this conversation with brain health expert Dr Tommy Wood. And today, we tackle the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to protecting their brain and longevity. Tommy is Assistant Professor of Paediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington, where his research spans brain development, cognitive decline and dementia prevention. He’s also worked with elite athletes and Formula One drivers as a performance coach. And in his must-read book The Stimulated Mind, he combines that breadth and specialism to make understanding brain health easier – and more fun – than you might think. We start with mindset, and the surprising research findings that how you feel about ageing can shape how you go on to age. As someone in his 40s, I was delighted to hear Tommy cite a paper called Humans Peak in Midlife, showing that increasing wisdom, emotional intelligence and moral reasoning could make age 55 to 65 my best brain decade yet! We talk about the risk of becoming so focused on optimising your own health that you neglect what matters most, your relationships with other people. And Tommy points out why chasing longevity without that connection is missing the entire point. From there we get practical. We discuss mistakes like ignoring your blood pressure (and the implications for dementia) and what testing markers like homocysteine early, rather than waiting until something goes wrong, means for your long-term brain health. I also ask Tommy which supplements are worth considering, including the latest evidence on creatine and basic multivitamins. And he reveals the surprisingly strong link between your oral health and your brain. Finally, we consider the toxic load of modern life, from microplastics to air pollution, and whether you should filter your water. Tommy’s balanced, evidence-based perspective avoids scaremongering while still taking these issues seriously. Whether you’ve listened to every one of Tommy's previous appearances or you’re new to the podcast, this conversation is packed with practical ideas you can act on today, whatever your stage of life. As Tommy reminds us, it is never too late to start. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 682 - How To Have More Meaningful & Intimate Relationships: A Fresh Approach That Really Works with Terry Real #679
If there were a health marker guaranteed to shape your happiness, your health and your children’s wellbeing, wouldn’t you want to optimise it? According to today’s guest there is: your relationships. And in this episode, the world-renowned couples’ therapist Terry Real reveals the one skill he believes matters more than any other for lasting love – while showing you exactly how to use it. Nicknamed ‘the turnaround guy’, Terry has spent decades helping couples who’ve tried it all find their way back to connection. His latest bestseller Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship, features a foreword from one-such happy customer, Bruce Springsteen. Terry’s unconventional yet hugely successful approach, Relational Life Therapy (RLT), has trained thousands of therapists worldwide. He believes a good therapist should take sides, and that lasting change often means helping someone come down from grandiosity, not just raising them up from shame. This is one of those conversations that blends big, new ideas with nuggets of advice you’ll be itching to put into practice. We discuss how expectations of love and romance have changed over the generations – and why so many of us are trying to build modern, intimate partnerships using skills we were never actually taught. And Terry explains why the real measure of a strong relationship isn’t how rarely you argue, but which of your ‘three selves’ you use to do it. He introduces the idea of the adaptive child, an old survival pattern that hijacks our behaviour the moment we feel threatened, and explains how learning to recognise it can transform the way we handle conflict. We also discuss the patriarchy and the need to move beyond it for humankind – but this is not about blaming men or women, rather showing how both can and must shift to help each other and the world. So, what is that one skill we need for lasting love? Terry calls it repair, and his bold idea is that it’s not a two-way conversation. When someone we love is hurt or upset with us, our job is not to explain ourselves, but to help them feel heard first. The ability to repair, more than the ability to swerve an argument altogether, is what determines relationship success – and, crucially, he reveals how to do it. It’s a simple reframe, and one that could change how you handle your very next disagreement. Whether you are single, married, co-parenting, or navigating a difficult patch with someone you care about, this conversation is full of practical strategies you can start using today. I have a feeling you’ll want to share this episode, so everyone you love can do the same. Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 681 - BITESIZE | A Monk’s Guide To Finding Happiness & Thriving in Hard Times | Gelong Thubten #678
What if the most courageous, compassionate thing you could do in life, was to learn how to be with yourself? It’s a powerful, perhaps surprising idea put forward by today’s guest. Today’s Bitesize is from episode 387 of the podcast with Gelong Thubten - Buddhist monk, meditation teacher and author of the fantastic book 'A Handbook for Hard Times: A Monk’s Guide to Fearless Living’. Thubten became a monk back in 1993 after suffering from severe physical and mental burnout whilst following his dream of becoming an actor in New York City. We begin by talking about distraction and addiction, two states that are very closely linked. He explains that when we distract ourselves by scrolling, overeating, or drinking for example, we’re pushing away emotional pain or discomfort - even if we may not realise it. But the discomfort is really in the pushing. If we can learn instead to sit with what’s making us uncomfortable, those emotions start to transform. Thu, 10 Sep 2026 - 680 - The 4 Food Types That Repair Your Gut Barrier: A Gastroenterologist's Guide To Beating Inflammation For Good with Dr Will Bulsiewicz #677
Could the food you ate yesterday already be reshaping your gut, your immune system and your risk of chronic disease? This week’s guest says yes, and he’s spent his career demonstrating why that matters so much. Dr Will Bulsiewicz is an award-winning gastroenterologist and the author of the new book, Plant Powered Plus. And few people can explain the science of gut health as clearly, or as compassionately, as Will does in this conversation. If you think you already know everything there is to know about digestion, fibre and plant foods, this episode will change your mind – and deliver a great deal more. Will has identified four nutrition ‘workhorses’ that feed and protect our guts and, unsurprisingly, fibre is one of them. We get into the specifics of how the fibre we eat turns into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which Will describes as the most anti-inflammatory substance he has ever come across. He makes the case for fibre as the true longevity nutrient. We talk about resistant starch, found in cooled potatoes and green bananas, and why it feeds a completely different part of your gut microbiome to other fibres. Will shares the research behind the ‘30 plants a week’ target, and why he thinks the exact figure matters far less than most people assume. And he covers the importance of polyphenols, healthy fats and fermented foods. There’s a fascinating section on the different ways our gut microbiomes are shaped by our closest relationships, including some research findings even Will found surprising. We bust some myths around the term ‘leaky gut’. And we discuss why he no longer sees Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis as straightforward autoimmune conditions, but more like the immune system turning against the microbiome. Will is refreshingly honest about the limits of diet alone. He talks candidly about the patients he could not help through nutrition or medication, and about a period in his own life when food became a coping mechanism for something he wasn’t able to face. It is a reminder that lasting health often asks more of us than simply eating better. Whether you’re new to the topic of gut health or well acquainted, this episode brings a new perspective. It’s packed with valuable and actionable moments – and it’s one you’ll come back to again and again. Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 679 - BITESIZE | How to Train Your Eyes & Rewire Your Brain for Better Focus & Less Stress | Dr Bryce Appelbaum #676
When we think about improving our health, we often think about changing our diet, increasing how much we move, improving the quality of our sleep and lowering stress, but how many of us think about ‘working’ on our vision? Every day, many of us experience symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, headaches or poor concentration – and never realise that our eyes might be playing a central role. In today’s Bitesize, pioneering neuro-optometrist Dr Bryce Appelbaum explains why our visual system is about far more than simply how well we can see. Many of us don’t realise just how much our vision influences how we think, feel and perform. We explore the surprising connection between vision and stress, and Bryce shares some simple, practical exercises we can all use today to better support our visual system and our wider health. Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 678 - How To Find Purpose In An Age Of Emptiness with Arthur Brooks #675
Why does struggling for something make it more satisfying? And why can getting what you want leave you feeling flat? In this episode, I sit down with Arthur Brooks, one of the world's leading voices on the science of happiness, for a conversation that might change how you feel about your life. Arthur is a professor at Vanderbilt University, senior fellow of Harvard Business School and bestselling author of multiple books, including new title, The Meaning Of Your Life. He walked away from a successful career when he realised that despite a happy marriage, strong faith and good income, he struggled to feel happy. That personal reckoning led him to years of research into what really makes people thrive – and in this conversation, he shares the framework he developed to explain it. Using an analogy from nutrition science, Arthur describes happiness as requiring three macronutrients: enjoyment, satisfaction and meaning. We talk about why so many high achievers get the first one wrong. Suffering and struggle, he says, aren’t obstacles to a fulfilling life but essential ingredients of it – hence removing all friction from our lives can leave us feeling empty rather than content. We also get into goals, and why reaching them tends not to deliver the lasting happiness we expect. Arthur calls this the arrival fallacy, and understanding might change how you approach your next big challenge. On relationships, Arthur shares research showing that the healthiest marriages are not the ones with the least conflict, but the ones with the most honesty. We talk frankly about what that has looked like in our own marriages, what we can all learn from our parents when it comes to happiness, and the best (and easiest) way to send a positive message to our children. Arthur also shares what he’s learned about presence, faith and love from his relationship and his daily practices. We explore the difference between solitude and loneliness and how levels of social connection can be individual. And I hope you’ll pay attention to the section on why leisure needs to be treated as seriously as work. This is a warm, honest and personal conversation with someone who’s spent decades studying happiness – but who’s candid about how hard he’s worked to feel it himself. By reframing happiness as a direction not a destination, I think it could be a life-changing listen for you. Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 677 - The Daily Habits That Protect Your Brain At Any Age: The New Science Of Dementia Prevention with Dr David Perlmutter #674
Most of us assume that memory loss and cognitive decline are just part of getting older. In this episode, a world-leading neurologist says that’s simply not true. That, far from being inevitable, Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases result from decades of metabolic damage – which we have the power to prevent and even reverse. I’m speaking with Dr David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist, six-time New York Times bestselling author, and one of the world's leading experts on brain health. And in this fascinating conversation, we discuss the single biological mechanism that sits at the heart of virtually every neurodegenerative condition, from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's to long Covid and depression, and why understanding it changes everything about how you approach your lifestyle. David’s key insight is that our brain's own immune cells, called microglial cells, have the power to make or break our future brain health. Keep them in their protective state through diet, exercise, and metabolic testing, and we can safeguard our brain for life. Feed them with ultra-processed food and they will shift into a destructive state that drives neuroinflammation. We discuss how, exactly, ultra-processed food damages the brain, why metabolic health is the key to cognitive longevity, and why the diagnosis of Alzheimer's is really the end stage of a process that began decades earlier. The choices you make right now, in your 30s, 40s and 50s, are already shaping the brain you will have in your 70s and beyond. If this all sounds science-heavy, rest assured David approaches it, just as he does in his new book, Brain Defenders, with clarity and plenty of practical takeaway. He outlines the specific blood biomarkers he believes everyone should be tracking, including fasting insulin, homocysteine and uric acid, for a remarkable window into your long-term brain health. We discuss why knowing your numbers is one of the most empowering steps you can take, how to go about getting tested, and how to act on what you find. There is a great deal of fear around dementia, and understandably so. But what I hope you take from this episode is something David emphasises: we needn’t be scared because we have agency. The research is clear that lifestyle choices have a profound impact on your risk, and it is never too early, or too late, to start making them. This is one of the most distinct and important conversations I’ve had about the future of your brain, and I think you will find it incredibly useful, thought-provoking and, above all, hopeful. Thu, 02 Jul 2026 - 673 - How To Live An Intentional Life with Professor C Thi Nguyen #670
We’re living in a world that has become extraordinarily skilled at measuring success. But most of us never stop to question which standards really matter to us. Are you chasing success by someone else's definition, without even knowing it? This episode will help you figure that out. My guest is C Thi Nguyen, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah and the author of The Score: How to Stop Playing Someone Else's Game, one of the most thought-provoking books I’ve read. This conversation explores where our values really come from, what games and hobbies can teach us about living with freedom, and why so much of what matters most in life resists being measured at all. Thi has developed a fascinating framework for understanding one of the defining problems of modern life: what he calls ‘value capture’. It’s the process by which our own rich, personal values are replaced by simplified external metrics (think followers and likes, salaries, exam grades – even health metrics like your weight or blood pressure score). These metrics can never show the full picture of a human life – but they can end up running it. And once you understand this concept of value capture, you’ll start to notice it everywhere. Thi and I discuss why our culture is so poor at honouring the ‘unmeasurables’. We talk about why joy, love, forgiveness and the quality of our relationships are the substance of a life well lived. Yet they’re systematically undervalued, not because they’re unimportant, but because they’re hard to count. He’s somewhat of an expert on play, whether through sport, board games or hobbies, and we discuss what these activities, often dismissed as trivial, can teach us about meaning and how to live well. Plus, we debate the difference between principles and algorithmic rules – a distinction that might change how you approach your health and your life more broadly. What I love about Thi's thinking is that he’s not telling us to throw out all forms of measurement. He’s more nuanced than that. He is asking us to wake up to the difference between the scorecard we have inherited from the world around us, and the one we would choose for ourselves. He wants us to know that the first step towards genuine fulfilment is simply becoming aware of whose game you have been playing. Today’s clip is from episode 330 of the podcast with science journalist and New York Times bestselling author, Max Lugavere. Max is passionate about helping people improve their brain health, their longevity and how they feel by optimising their diet. In this clip, he shares three food types that he believes are worth reducing or removing from our diets, and explains why doing so could have many benefits for our health. Max’s message is one of balance and realism. We can all make choices every single day that set us on the path to better health, even if we’re only taking baby steps. Making small changes could have a meaningful impact on our health. Thu, 25 Jun 2026 - 671 - The Science of Deep Rest: How Relaxation Calms Stress & Slows Ageing with Dr Elissa Epel #668
Could the stress you barely notice be more harmful than you think? Most of us know chronic stress is bad for us, but few of us realise how deep that damage can go – or how much power we have to reverse it. In this enlightening episode, I speak with one of the world's leading stress researchers Dr Elissa Epel, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, to explore the latest science of stress, ageing – and why deep rest may be the remedy we’re overlooking. Elissa's research as a health psychologist reveals that chronic stress can age our immune systems by as much as 10 years. But with the right habits we can activate the repair mechanisms that slow and even reverse that process. We talk about her framework of four mind states – red, yellow, green and blue – outlined in her book, The Seven-Day Stress Prescription. I find it one of the most useful tools for understanding our place on the stress spectrum at any given moment. We explore why so many of us have lost the ability to relax, the importance of deep rest for cellular repair, and the evening habits that transform the quality of your sleep. We also discuss the very latest in wearable technology and the metrics Elissa believes are worth tracking. She makes the distinction between monitoring daily stress levels and the tech that can now track longer-term trends. And she shares her experience with continuous glucose monitoring and what it revealed to her about the relationship between stress, sleep and metabolic health. I loved hearing about the Big Joy Project, Elissa’s ongoing study of around 20,000 people, finding that small, simple acts of kindness and connection can shift our emotions over the course of a week and make us more altruistic and prosocial. At a time when the world can feel divided, I think that matters enormously. Finally, we explore how changing the story you tell yourself about a stressful situation, current or past, can transform your physiological response. This reframing is something I’ve learned to do and find endlessly empowering. Our perception is not just a mental experience. It shapes our biology. Elissa is an open-hearted communicator, whose generosity comes across in everything she shares with us here. Whether you struggle with overwhelm, or you suspect you’re more stressed than you realise, I know this conversation has advice you’ll want to take on board. Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 670 - BITESIZE | How to Break the Anxiety Cycle | Dr Russell Kennedy #667
A lot of people are struggling with anxiety at the moment, especially in a world that often feels out of control. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 370 of the podcast with physician and neuroscientist, Dr Russell Kennedy, who previously suffered with crippling anxiety for over 30 years. Russell insists anxiety isn’t a disorder of the mind. Our worries are merely a symptom - and one that keeps us in our heads and away from the real problem. His core message is that it’s often more effective to use the body to calm the mind, than the mind to calm the body. In this clip, he explains why anxiety may have less to do with our thoughts than we realise, and shares practical strategies that could help us begin breaking the anxiety cycle. Thu, 18 Jun 2026 - 669 - The 5 Most Important Biomarkers That Influence Your Health & How To Live Better For Longer with Dr Florence Comite #666
You might assume that how you’ll age is down to your genes. That your disease risk is out of your hands, sealed by midlife, and something to manage rather than change. But Dr Florence Comite has spent 30 years proving that assumption wrong. And for this conversation, she’s brought the evidence. Florence is a clinician-scientist, Yale and National Institutes of Health-trained endocrinologist, and some might call her a disruptor. Her life’s work has been built on the radical idea that decline is not inevitable, it is detectable. And because it’s detectable, it’s reversible. Her new book, Invincible: Defy Your Genetic Destiny to Live Better Longer, has the core message that our health trajectory is far from fixed. By tuning into our body’s signals, and understanding our physiology, we can make targeted changes to improve how we feel, function and age. In this episode, Florence and I explore why the Western medical model – built around treating disease not creating health – leaves people in the dark when it comes to disease risk. We discuss why the type and frequency of blood tests your doctor currently offers is lacking, as well as what you should ask for (or seek privately) if you want to truly understand your health. Florence talks us through the five blood biomarkers she believes every adult should know about, including one – fasting insulin – that your doctor is highly unlikely to check but that I agree with her is absolutely critical. And she explains why free testosterone is vital for both men and women, how it connects to muscle, memory, bone density, blood sugar and heart health, and why optimising it has transformed some of her patients’ lives. We also sing the praises of continuous glucose monitors. We discuss what they reveal about your individual response to food, why two people can eat the same meal with different results, and how the order in which you eat your meal can change your health. This is a conversation about taking control. It’s about owning your data, your trends – and your future. Florence and I share the belief that our healthcare systems need to move from reactive to proactive. In time, I’m hopeful that will happen. But in the meantime her clinic – and my own Do Health app – are paving an exciting way for you to get ahead of the curve. Thu, 11 Jun 2026 - 667 - The Hidden Reason You Can't Stop Overthinking, People-Pleasing And Overworking with Dr Nicole LePera #664
Why do we sometimes react in ways we don’t mean to? Why does criticism land so heavily when others can brush it off? And why, even when life looks good from the outside, do we feel stuck on the inside? This week’s guest offers a new perspective on all this – and an optimistic way forward. With nearly 10 million followers on Instagram as The Holistic Psychologist, Dr Nicole LePera has helped countless people see their lifelong patterns through a helpful new lens. She joins me to discuss her fantastic book, Reparenting the Inner Child: The New Science of Our Oldest Wounds and How to Heal Them. At the heart of our conversation is an important idea: we don’t see the world as it is, we see it through the state of our nervous system. Nicole highlights the signs that yours may be calling the shots, such as restlessness, numbness, disproportionate reactions and the constant need to be busy. And she explains how those patterns trace back to a part of us shaped long before we had the language for it: our inner child. We explore how childhood adaptations follow us into adulthood, often without us realising, shaping our relationships, our careers, our sensitivity to criticism, and our self-worth. Nicole walks us through some of the parent archetypes from her book. And we discuss the universal choice every child makes between authenticity and attachment (and what this costs us later). Importantly, this is never about blaming, parent or child – acceptance of the past (rather than approval or forgiveness) is how we begin to change. You’ll be fascinated to hear Nicole explain how trauma from generations before us may still be wired into our bodies, but we can break the cycle. We also discuss why conflict in relationships can be healthy, and why healing is a two-step process: becoming aware, and then making different choices. The best part? You’ll come away from this conversation with the tools for change. Nicole talks us through her practical strategies, including the conscious check-in, the three body anchors, bilateral stimulation, and getting to know yourself through simple, mindful moments. Whether you've spent years exploring attachment and inner-child work, or this is your first therapy session, I know you’ll find something here that stays with you. As Nicole says, healing isn’t about reaching an end point. It’s an ongoing process, available to all of us at any moment that we choose to join in. Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 666 - BITESIZE | 3 Hidden Causes of Low Energy (and What You Can Do About Them) | Dr Rangan Chatterjee #663
Many of us assume low energy is simply a consequence of being busy or not getting enough sleep. But there can be other factors contributing to how we feel that often go unnoticed. I’ve decided to try something a little bit different as a Bitesize episode this week. I wanted to record a solo episode about the topic of energy because one of the most common things I hear from patients is that they feel exhausted or overwhelmed even when they seem to be getting enough sleep. So, in this episode, I share a few often overlooked reasons that can leave us feeling low in energy, along with some simple strategies that could quickly begin to help. Please note: these symptoms can also occur in a range of conditions, including depression, sleep apnoea, thyroid disorders and anaemia. If your symptoms persist, or if you have any concerns, it’s important to seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Thu, 04 Jun 2026 - 665 - The Revolutionary Science Of Recovering From Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Anxiety & Depression with Dr Howard Schubiner #662
Imagine being told for 25 years that your pain is incurable – then making a full recovery within six weeks. That’s exactly what happened to one of the case studies in this episode and his story is far from exceptional. Could it be that much of the chronic pain we accept in life isn’t evidence our body is broken, but a sign our brain is trying to protect us? My guest this week is Dr Howard Schubiner, one of the world’s leading experts in chronic pain and the mind-body interaction. He’s spent more than 20 years working wonders with people who’d been told their pain was untreatable. He’s published over 100 scientific papers, runs one of the most respected programmes of its kind in the US, and his new book, Unlearn Your Pain, is set to transform how we think about suffering. To kick off this game-changing conversation, Howard debunks some common beliefs around pain, including the assumption that an MRI scan will accurately diagnose back issues. We talk about why bulging discs, degeneration and other scary-sounding findings show up just as often in people who aren’t in pain. And why the language used in scan reports can sometimes do real harm. To explain this, Howard talks us through the difference between structural and neuroplastic pain. The key learning here? All pain is created by the brain, through something called predictive processing. In structural pain, there’s clear tissue damage so your brain creates pain to help you protect the area and seek help. In neuroplastic pain, there’s some sort of perceived danger but no real injury. Here’s what’s important: both types are real. You are feeling pain. The difference is in the treatment. For that, Howard shares his five-part framework for reversing neuroplastic pain – and it has nothing to do with painkillers. He also reveals how the same principles can be applied to tinnitus, dizziness, brain fog, long covid, IBS, anxiety, depression, fatigue and more. We talk childhood, the personality traits that subtly make us more vulnerable to neuroplastic symptoms, and why women are so often the ones carrying the weight. Whether you're living with a long-term condition yourself, supporting someone who is, or you’re simply curious about the communication pathways between our bodies and our brains, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Why is it that so many of us find it hard to stick to a new diet or lifestyle plan? Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 92 of the podcast when my good friend, Dr Ayan Panja, put me in the hot seat. In this clip, we explore why lasting change doesn’t often come from huge life overhauls or extreme routines, but from small actions repeated consistently over time. We discuss why so many health plans fail, how 5 minute habits can create a powerful ripple effect throughout our lives, and why sustainable lifestyle change may be much simpler than we think. Thu, 28 May 2026 - 663 - The Life Changing Magic Of Walking & How To Do It Better with Dr Courtney Conley #660
Most of us walk every day without really thinking about it – but this episode is guaranteed to change that. Because this simple, free, radical act is one of the most powerful things you can do for your body, your brain and your longevity. In this episode I’m joined by Dr Courtney Conley, for a conversation that will transform how you feel about your feet and how you use them. Courtney is a movement specialist who’s passionate about helping people move through life with strength, ease and confidence. She's co-author of the must-read new book, Walk: Your Life Depends On It, and this is her second appearance on the show, following one of our most listened-to episodes of the year. We begin by unpacking the 10,000 steps a day target – where it came from and what the research shows we really need (clue: it’s less than you think… but it matters way more than you think). We talk through the wealth of benefits walking brings, with Courtney explaining that wherever you are on the scale, adding just a thousand steps a day can lower your risk of dementia, depression and all-cause mortality. We cover chronic pain and why walking is more likely to help than hinder you. Courtney shares her practical cues for walking more efficiently, including rolling through your feet, walking tall and nasal breathing (try them as you listen and you’ll see why they work). And we discuss why strength and power are equally important components of fitness that we need to protect as we age. There’s also a wealth of information on foot issues from plantar fasciitis to Achilles’ pain, bunions and osteopenia. Plus Courtney’s how-to guide for transitioning from cushioned to functional or minimal footwear. Whether you currently walk a lot, a little, or somewhere in between, I think you'll come away from this conversation with a renewed appreciation for what your feet can do for you. All of us, whatever our age or starting point, can benefit from walking more or better – and this episode will help you do that, one step at a time. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with images of material success, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others and believing that more money means more happiness. Today’s clip is from episode 471 of the podcast with best-selling author and one of the top leadership and personal mastery experts in the world, Robin Sharma. Thu, 21 May 2026 - 661 - The Simple Nutrient That Could Transform Your Gut Health, Brain Power & Longevity with Dr Emily Leeming #658
The chances are, you’re one of the 96 percent who aren’t getting enough fibre. And I’m not talking a little bit off the mark. For most of us, our intake is seriously lacking. Why does that matter? Because given everything we now know about what fibre does for our gut, our brain, our metabolism, our mood, our weight and our long-term disease risk, it’s an easy fix that we’re missing. Joining me on the podcast is Dr Emily Leeming, a dietitian and researcher at King's College London, who’s spent years studying the relationship between what we eat and the health of our gut microbiome. Her new book, Fibre Power, makes the case – compellingly and practically – that fibre may be the most underrated nutrient in our diets. As a scientist, a clinician who works directly with patients, and a former chef, her advice is evidence-based yet grounded in what works in a real kitchen, for real people. In this episode we explore what fibre is, where it’s found, and why it’s so much more than a digestive aid. Emily explains how it feeds the trillions of microbes living in your gut, and why those microbes (and the compounds they produce) have a reach that extends to your immune system, your metabolism, your brain, your hormones, and your risk of serious disease. We look at the evidence linking fibre intake to lower rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, bowel cancer, and depression. Emily also shares findings from the major bowel-cancer study she’s running at King's, investigating why rates in the under-50s are on the rise. Crucially, our conversation is packed with actionable advice. I love Emily’s simple, memorable frameworks for building more fibre into your meals without overhauling your diet, spending more money, or filling yourself with gas! We also spend time on the people for whom blanket advice doesn't always apply, such as those with IBS, type 2 diabetes, people navigating the menopause or following certain diets. And Emily has solutions for every scenario. Fibre is so much more than a dull, functional food. It’s one of the most researched nutrients in existence. So whether you’ve never thought much about it, or you already know it matters but keep falling short, I think this episode will give you both the motivation and the tools to include more of it. Small shifts, made consistently, really do add up – and this conversation is an inspiring place to start. Thu, 14 May 2026 - 659 - How To Recover From Burnout (It’s Not What You Expect) with Pippa Grange #656
What if burnout isn't a sign that something is broken in you, but a sign that something needs to change? That's the question at the heart of this conversation – and it’ll shift the way you think about your energy, your career, and how you’re spending your one life. My guest is Pippa Grange, the renowned psychologist, performance coach, and author of Life Reclaimed. Pippa spent 25 years working with the highest performers in the world of business and sport (including her famous stint with the England football team). But her wisdom today is for all of us – particularly anyone who feels like they’re running on empty, or that the way they’re living isn’t working for them anymore. We begin by talking about why overperformance is so prevalent these days, and why it’s not a personal failing but a cultural shift. Pippa describes burnout as something that happens when life’s pace and pressure outweighs our ability to cope. We overperform at work, at home, even socially – and we’ve forgotten what balance looks like. The solution? Her framework of ‘regenerative performance’, built around a simple but powerful cycle: perform, rest, renew. And if that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s happening right in front of us every day – in nature. For Pippa, nature is the most intelligent model we have for sustainable human performance. After all, we’re a part of the natural world – and it’s moving away from these instinctive, biological cycles that has led to our collective burnout. Fortunately, she’s developed four core principles to guide us from overperformance into regenerative performance. They’re all about listening to the intelligence of the body rather than overriding it; tuning into our natural selves to develop sustainable patterns. And she brings the principles to life with practical tools you can use straight away, including a simple midday check-in that takes under a minute – and that I’ll definitely be incorporating into my day. This is a really important conversation, which offers a valuable, viable alternative to giving up. Follow Pippa’s advice and you can reconnect with your natural cycles. You can make meaningful change from within your life, rather than trying to escape it. It’s time to stop pushing through and start reclaiming the life you were meant to lead. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 479 of the podcast with Global Head of Human Performance and Principal Scientist at WHOOP, Dr Kristen Holmes. In this clip, we discuss practical strategies for harmonising our circadian rhythms in the context of modern life. Kristen explains how factors like late meals and irregular routines can disrupt your body’s natural rhythms, and shares some simple changes that can make a real difference. This episode is packed with actionable insights, and I hope it leaves you feeling empowered to take control of your daily rhythms and experience the transformative effects on your health. Thu, 07 May 2026 - 657 - Why Creativity Is The Most Powerful Health Tool You’re Not Using with Professor Daisy Fancourt #654
Most of us know that nutrition, movement and sleep are key pillars of health. But what if I told you that creativity belongs in the same conversation – and the science to prove it has been mounting up for decades? Professor Daisy Fancourt, one of the world’s leading health researchers, has uncovered a wealth of evidence linking engagement with the arts to improved mental and physical health. It’s all collected in her wonderful book, Art Cure, and I only wish it had existed as required reading when I was a medical student. Daisy agrees it’s been a ‘bizarrely well-kept secret’. We think of creative pursuits – music, theatre, dancing, arts and crafts – as ‘nice to haves’ but not necessary parts of life. But she believes a public awareness shift is on the horizon. Just as we’ve come to understand that exercise is an essential component of health, so too will we realise that ‘art as medicine’ is a scientific fact – one to be prescribed not ignored. It’s quite the promise – and a really exciting one to consider. Because for most of us, the arts represent enjoyment. So this health advice could be the easiest and most pleasurable you’ve ever followed! During this conversation Daisy and I discuss what engaging with the arts really means, and why it differs from non-creative, relaxing activities. We talk about the rise in screen-based ‘junk’ art, and why the post-pandemic continuum of virtual experiences can’t match real-world ones. And we explore how the arts tick lots of wellbeing boxes, from arousing nostalgia to firing the imagination, building confidence and communities to getting us moving. Most of us instinctively get it: the creative side of life is good for us. The science behind it though, is extraordinary. From lowering blood pressure to slowing biological ageing, reducing dementia risk to lowering inflammation, these aren’t small effects. Engaging with the arts has even been shown to cut older adults' risk of dying by 31 percent. Yet none of this has made it into mainstream health conversations – until now. There is so much packed into this joyous episode, from the surprising power of music to the unique combination of benefits that come from dancing. Daisy also shares some original ways to incorporate the arts into your life more – you’ll never think of your five a day, or your commute, in the same way again. We’re born creative and embrace it in childhood, but I think we stop prioritising it as adults. This conversation will kickstart it again. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Tue, 05 May 2026 - 656 - BITESIZE | How To Become Less Reactive & Cultivate A Deep Sense Of Calm | Jonny Miller #653
Many of us are living with chronically dysregulated nervous systems, yet we mistake this reactive state for normal. Research suggests that our nervous system acts as a lens through which we experience reality. But when that lens is out of balance, we start to see threats where none exist, and respond in an exaggerated way to everyday situations. Today’s clip is from episode 569 of the podcast with Jonny Miller - founder of Nervous System Mastery, a 5-week bootcamp where he has taught over a thousand students how to cultivate calm, rewire reactivity and restore aliveness. In this clip he shares why learning to work with your body can change how you respond to stress, reduce reactivity, and help you move from overwhelm to calm. Thu, 30 Apr 2026 - 655 - Why You Can’t Stop Eating Sugar And Ultra Processed Foods with Dr Jen Unwin #652
Ever wondered why you can’t stop at just one biscuit? Or why your efforts to eat better go so well for a few days, but you’re soon back where you started – frustrated, ashamed and wondering what’s wrong with you? This episode has the answers you need, along with a roadmap for regaining control. I’m speaking with Dr Jen Unwin, a clinical psychologist who has struggled with and overcome food addiction. And if you’re thinking ‘I didn’t think that was a thing’ then stay tuned for the facts that will convince you otherwise. Over decades trying to understand her own relationship with food, Jen discovered that for a significant number of people, a compulsive habit around sugar and ultra-processed foods is real and damaging. In this enlightening conversation, she explains how sugar lights up the same reward centres in the brain as nicotine and alcohol. And how our hunter-gatherer ancestors may not have needed an ‘off switch’ for eating, but our modern food industry makes it almost impossible for vulnerable people to say no. The research is strong – and Jen is part of a charity campaigning to have food addiction formally recognised by the World Health Organization. That way millions of people would be able to get help from their doctors, in the same way as people with drug and alcohol misuse disorders – instead of being dismissed for a lack of discipline or willpower. Many of us get cravings or have a fondness for sweet or ‘blissy’ foods. So when does that tip into addiction? Jen shares a clever, six-point, self-assessment tool called CRAVED, which you can use right now to understand whether your relationship with food might be problematic. And we get super practical, with advice on whether cutting down or going cold turkey is right for you, how to handle social situations when everyone around you is indulging, and how to set up your home environment for success. Whether you score one or six on the CRAVED scale, I’m certain there’s something in this conversation for everyone. And if you’re someone who has been battling this quietly, perhaps feeling ashamed or hopeless, I honestly believe Jen’s message might mark a turning point for you – one that helps you see a way forward. Thu, 23 Apr 2026 - 653 - How To Stop Limiting Yourself And Liberate Your Full Potential with Nir Eyal #650
This podcast could change the way you think about every goal you’ve set, every relationship you’re struggling with – and every story you tell yourself about what you’re capable of. It all comes down to something most of us have never thought to question: our beliefs. And what you’ll hear in this conversation might be the most practical, liberating idea you come across all year. I’m speaking with Nir Eyal, the bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable, whose powerful new book Beyond Belief draws on years of research into the psychology of why we limit ourselves – and how to stop. Nir opens the conversation with a striking claim: human beings never perceive reality as it truly is. Our brains filter everything through our existing beliefs and expectations, and most of the time, we have no idea it’s happening. The good news? Once you understand this, you can start choosing beliefs that actually work for you. In this conversation, we explore why persistence – not talent or intelligence – is the number one predictor of whether you’ll reach your goals. Nir reveals the crucial difference between pain and suffering, including the astonishing story of a man who underwent surgery without anaesthetic and felt no suffering at all. We talk about why positive thinking may not be the motivator you think it is, and what the research says you should do instead. And Nir shares his crucial insight that beliefs are tools, not truths. So we can choose which to adopt based on whether they serve us. Nir shares some personal stories of how he’s used his tools to lose weight, repair relationships and reframe his ADHD diagnosis as a skills gap not a debilitating condition. But what you’ll love most about listening is the clear, practical framework he gives us for doing the same. You’ll learn how to spot the beliefs that are draining you and ask, could the opposite be true, even just for a while? Whether you’re navigating a health challenge, a difficult relationship, a career crossroads, or just that nagging voice telling you it’s too late, tune in for the solution. It’s never too late to swap limiting beliefs for ones that liberate you instead. Fill out our audience survey via https://drchatterjee.com/survey Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Thu, 16 Apr 2026 - 651 - How To Support Your Immunity, Reduce Inflammation & Age Better with Dr Jenna Macciochi #648
Most of us only think about our immune system when we're ill. But what if it's actually the single most important system shaping your health and longevity? In this episode, Dr Jenna Macciochi makes a powerful case for rethinking immunity. It’s not just a defence mechanism you call on to fight a cold. It’s your body's wellness system, quietly influencing everything from your mood and metabolism to your risk of heart disease, dementia and cancer. Jenna is one of the UK's leading immunologists and a bestselling author. Her latest book, Immune to Age: The Game-Changing Science of Lifetime Health, explores the deep connection between our immune system, how we live, and how well we age. Jenna combines robust science and personal honesty in everything she does and this, her second conversation for the podcast, is no exception. Jenna explains what the immune system actually is, what it does, and why ‘boosting’ it isn’t something you want to do on a regular basis. We explore the link between chronic stress and inflammation. And we discuss how your thoughts, relationships and daily habits are constantly sending signals to your immune system that either help or hinder it. She also reveals why midlife is a genuine biological turning point. It’s the moment when genes that protected you in the first half of life start working against you, with consequences for your gut health, bone density and long-term wellbeing. But if that sounds bleak, Jenna also shares plenty of practical advice, learned from the personal upheavals that shaped her fantastic book. From leaving a misaligned marriage and job, to discovering meditation, self-compassion – and jiu-jitsu! – she transformed not just her thinking but her nervous system, too. And I love her perceptive view that the current obsession with lifespan is missing something fundamental about living well: your soulspan. Whether you're in midlife and noticing changes in your body, or you simply want to learn about the incredible wellness system driving your long-term health, this is one episode you’ll want to bookmark. Thu, 09 Apr 2026 - 649 - How To Change The Quality Of Your Relationships At Any Age with Dr Amir Levine #646
What if the secret to great health, more energy and feeling happier isn’t a diet, a fitness routine or a supplement – but the quality of your relationships? This conversation, with neuroscientist Dr Amir Levine, will challenge your preconceptions about how you relate to others and, more importantly, empower you to change that. Dr Levine is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University and bestselling author of Attached a landmark title about attachment theory in adults. But it’s his new book Secure: The Revolutionary Guide to Creating a Secure Life, that we’re diving into today. In it, he makes the case that all of us, no matter what our attachment style, can learn to build relationships that help us thrive – in all areas of our life. Not familiar with the four attachment styles? Dr Levine explains all and tells us how they might show up in everyday life. They aren’t disorders that need to be fixed, but natural variations in how we understand and interact with others. And getting to know yours could help you feel more secure in your relationships, work and wellbeing. We explore the evolutionary science behind why our brains, which are wired for connection, can experience social exclusion as physical pain. It’s what makes ignoring someone just as damaging as lashing out – and explains why positive interactions with strangers (a hello here, a wave there) don’t just make your day, they can actually change your brain’s structure over time. If, as Dr Levine reveals, 95 percent of our adult attachment has nothing to do with childhood, that means we have huge potential for change. We don’t have to be held back by patterns we thought were with us for life. We just need to play to our strengths in relationships – and give our brains the right signals in the present. And if that sounds promising but puzzling, Dr Levine shares lots of practical ideas and tools you can use right away – including his five pillars of secure attachment and two, game-changing rules for managing conflict. We also discuss why some common ideas, like seeking closure after a break-up or setting boundaries, might not offer the security you’d like. What I hope you’ll take from this conversation is a sense of optimism. It’s the ideal episode for anyone feeling stuck in a relationship, struggling with conflict, or who simply wants to feel more secure in themselves. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Thu, 02 Apr 2026 - 647 - How To Change The Way You Breathe For More Energy, Better Sleep, Improved Blood Pressure & A Longer Life with James Nestor #644
Listening to this conversation could help you sleep better, quit snoring, and wake refreshed. You’ll learn a simple trick to stop anxiety in its tracks, and find out how to keep asthma and high blood pressure in check. And the secret to all these health gains? It really is a breath of fresh air… I’m talking to James Nestor, a science journalist and the author of international bestseller Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. James spent a decade investigating why so many of us breathe badly and what happens when we get it right. And he’s here today to pass on some ancient wisdom, through the lens of modern science. We all know the feeling of shallow, rapid breathing that sets in when you’re anxious or stressed. And you don’t have to be a breathwork guru to recognise the power of a slow inhalation and exhalation to make you feel… ahh… grounded and calm. James’s message is that better breathing really is that simple. It’s about tuning in to how well you’re using your lungs, your diaphragm – and your nose. In this episode, we get into why something as simple as switching from mouth breathing to nasal breathing could transform your health. We talk about a fascinating piece of research showing that lung size could be the single biggest predictor of how long you live. James shares the evidence that many chronic and unexpected health conditions can be improved and even reversed through better breathing – something doctors aren’t taught and don’t tell you. And he measures the CO2 levels in my studio, which leads to a conversation about indoor air quality that I was not expecting. It might change the way you think about your home, your office, your airline choice and your next hotel room. Perhaps the most exciting thing about this conversation is how simple and accessible everything we discuss is. The foundations of healthy breathing don’t cost a thing. You don’t need a gadget, a retreat, or a prescription. You just need to unlearn some key habits and start making small changes – for big results. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Fri, 27 Mar 2026 - 644 - How To Find Meaning and Purpose At Any Age with Dr James Hollis #641
Do you believe there’s something inside you that knows who you really are? It knows what kind of life you're meant to live, the type of work that lights you up, and what your soul is asking of you? In this episode, you'll learn how to start listening to it. Dr James Hollis, an 85-year-old Jungian analyst and author of 22 books, has spent more than four decades helping people uncover what's really driving their search for something more. What he has to say is profound, practical – and potentially life-changing. I begin by asking a deceptively simple question: what is a life of meaning? James explains that it’s not something you go out and find. Rather, it arises when you start living in alignment with your soul’s agenda. He shares his own powerful story of achieving everything he thought he wanted by 35, only to be hit by a depression that forced him to look inward for the first time. That crisis became a turning point and informed the wisdom he shares so generously today. We discuss why so many people who’ve reached the top in prestigious careers end up in therapy rooms like James’s, questioning what they’ve done with their lives. And we talk about how the ideas and cultural conditioning we absorb as children can misdirect us as adults. We also speak honestly about depression and why I believe that medics are too quick to reach for diagnoses and prescriptions, when the real issue is a life lacking in meaning. And James and I connect over our fathers, both of whom made sacrifices for their families. We ask what their stories teach us about purpose and alignment – and James shares his advice on how we can help our children to truly thrive. James has a knack of simplifying complex psychological ideas into realistic advice. And he has some useful ideas for reconnecting with your psyche. He describes his work as a therapist not to provide answers, but to facilitate ways we can find them ourselves – through creative pursuits, dreaming, or simply asking better questions. Whether you're in the middle of a career you're not sure about, navigating a restless midlife, or simply feeling drawn toward something you can't yet name, this episode will meet you exactly where you are. Sun, 22 Mar 2026 - 642 - BITESIZE | How to Make New Habits Stick (& Break Old Ones) | James Clear #639
Are you trying to create better habits and quit those that don’t serve you? Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 145 of the podcast with entrepreneur and author of the best-selling book Atomic Habits, James Clear. In this clip, James explains why small daily habits can have such a powerful impact on our lives, why focusing on systems rather than outcomes can lead to lasting change, and he shares four simple principles to help make habits stick. We also discuss how true behaviour change is really identity change. Every action you take towards your goal is a vote for the person you wish to become. You’re no longer that someone who tries to go for a run three times a week, you’re a runner. James says we can all begin by asking ourselves ‘Who do I want to become?’ then looking at what habits we might need to build that identity. Fri, 20 Mar 2026 - 641 - The New Science Of Preventing Dementia: Protect Your Brain, Boost Your Focus, Resist Cognitive Decline with Dr Tommy Wood #638
This podcast contains some of the simplest, most effective advice on brain health you will ever hear. It explains why the cognitive decline we expect with age isn’t inevitable at all. And why up to 70 percent of cases of dementia are, in fact, preventable. I’m speaking with neuroscientist Dr Tommy Wood, one of the most respected voices on brain health today. He works with Formula One drivers and elite athletes to deliver peak cognitive and physical performance. He’s a researcher whose work spans brain development, traumatic brain injury and dementia – all of which is compellingly distilled into his new book, The Stimulated Mind. Tommy is a plain speaker and motivating communicator and in this episode he explains why it’s the way you use your brain that matters more than almost anything else you can do for your long-term health. He outlines his 3S framework, Stimulate, Supply and Support, which makes brain health feel like something we can all influence – no expensive supplements or specialist training necessary. Instead it’s learning new skills, trying complex activities, and staying socially connected that counts. Sure, we need good nutrition and plenty of rest. But without cognitive stimulation our brains can’t develop. It’s as much good, says Tommy, as drinking a protein shake but never lifting a weight! We discuss different types of exercise and why our brains need a mix of aerobic, resistance and coordinative activities. Tommy describes taking dance classes or practising racquet sports as one of the best things we can do for our brains. So if you’ve ever fancied playing padel or trying tango? Now you’ve got some extra motivation. Tommy also helps us understand that feeling of being ‘tired yet wired’ – when you’re physically exhausted and mentally overwhelmed, but can’t switch off and rest. I love his solution of restructuring your day around different cognitive gears, to help. Plus, we discuss the hugely important, often overlooked topic of women’s brain health. What does the science really say about cognitive decline in menopause? The outlook is more hopeful than you might have thought. Our conversation is packed with practical advice and evidence-backed insights that I want everyone to hear. Cognitive decline isn’t inevitable. Dementia isn’t your destiny. Whatever your age and whatever your worry, there are so many easy steps you can take, starting today, that are guaranteed to make a difference. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Wed, 18 Mar 2026 - 640 - How to Sit With Difficult Feelings - Guided Meditation with Zen Master Henry Shukman #637
All through March, our community has been building a simple daily meditation habit — and if you haven’t started yet, there’s still plenty of time to join us. Here’s a beautiful meditation from Henry, just for the Feel Better, Live More community. It’s amazing how taking a few moments of stillness, where we put down the to-do list and just drop into being, can really shift how we feel. Meditation is an incredibly powerful tool for transforming our lives. But like any positive habit, it can be a hard thing to start and maintain. That’s why I love challenges — short, intensive commitments that help us to really kickstart a new habit or reinforce one we love. Throughout March, here at Feel Better, Live More, I’ve teamed up with Zen master Henry Shukman and his meditation app The Way, to bring you our first-ever Meditation Challenge, to help turbocharge your meditation practice. After meeting Henry last year, I've become a huge fan of his meditation app, The Way. I use it myself most days and really believe in what they're doing - so much that I've personally invested in the company. It doesn’t matter when you start, committing to 30 days of meditation has the power to not only improve your life, but the life of those around you too. Sun, 15 Mar 2026 - 639 - BITESIZE | The Childhood Patterns That Secretly Shape Your Adult Life | Alain de Botton #636
Many of the habits and reactions that shape our adult lives began as clever coping strategies in childhood. While they once helped us survive difficult situations, they can later limit our relationships and happiness. By becoming aware of these patterns, we can start to change them. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 495 of the podcast with author, internationally renowned philosopher, and founder of The School of Life, the wonderful Alain de Botton. Alain is known for his unique ability to apply philosophical concepts to everyday life. In this clip, he explains how our childhood can impact our adult relationships and behaviours and he shares some practical tools that can help us better understand ourselves and each other. Fri, 13 Mar 2026 - 638 - How to Handle Life When It Falls Apart: Rewire Your Beliefs, Calm Your Mind, Stop Ruminating & Move Forward With Confidence: Dr Maya Shankar #635
Most of us are quite comfortable with change when we’ve chosen it: a new job, new home or new relationship. It’s the unwanted, unexpected changes that tend to floor us - like an illness, loss or breakup - that leave us wondering who we are and how on earth we’re meant to go on. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr Maya Shankar, cognitive scientist and author ofThe Other Side of Change. Maya has spent years studying how our minds respond to change, and she’s also gone through some profound changes of her own – from a hand injury that shattered her hopes of becoming a concert violinist, to a long, painful journey with fertility. We talk about so many different topics related to the theme of change, including why our brains find uncertainty so stressful, how unwanted change can reveal hidden beliefs that we hold and why witnessing other people’s courage or kindness can quietly change what we believe is possible for ourselves. We also explore a variety of evidence-based practical tools to help us deal with things like rumination and negative thought spirals. Throughout the conversation, Maya unpacks some inspiring stories of people facing extreme adversity - things like illness, betrayal, loss and even imprisonment – who were still able to find meaning, new identities and unexpected gifts on the other side. Yes, change is something that many humans struggle with, but as you are about to learn, with the right approach, it can be one of the very best tools to help us transform, grow and evolve. Wed, 11 Mar 2026 - 637 - How To Take A Pause On Busy Days – Guided Meditation With Zen Master Henry Shukman #634
In this special episode of my Feel Better, Live More podcast - the second in the series - I’m inviting you to join me for something that has truly transformed my own life. I am a big believer in the transformative power of meditation. I also know how hard it can be to start and stick to a daily practice in our busy, modern world. Together, Zen Master, Henry Shukman and I designed Meditation March with The Way app to give you some motivation to finally start your daily practice – or perhaps deepen one you already have. We wanted to create a community of likeminded people, coming together to shake off their busy lives and find stillness for a few minutes each day. And so far, it’s really working! Henry has recorded this short meditation for you to try now. Today’s simple lesson is that meditation isn’t another thing you have to do. Rather it's the one time you get to put down all the tools and just ‘be’. If you like what you hear, why not join me on our 30-day challenge, for free. All you need to do is visit: https://www.thewayapp.com/livemore, download the app and join the rest of us, who are already meditating our way through March. Sun, 08 Mar 2026 - 636 - BITESIZE | The Small Daily Habits That Reduce Stress, Fix Your Focus and Build Resilience | Dr Tara Swart #633
We are living in the middle of a stress epidemic – the World Health Organization calls stress ‘the health epidemic of the twenty-first century’. Chronic stress can have a huge impact on physical and emotional health. In fact, 80-90% of what a doctor sees on any given day is somehow related to stress. But what can we do about it? Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 416 of the podcast with Dr Tara Swart – neuroscientist, former medical doctor & psychiatrist, lecturer at MIT, executive coach, and author of the best-selling book ‘The Source’. Many of us don’t realise the profound impact that chronic unmanaged stress can have on our physical health, even if we’re eating well and getting plenty of movement each day. In this clip, Tara shares some of the most effective ways to manage stress, and some of the simple practices she implements herself. Fri, 06 Mar 2026 - 635 - How To Feel Calmer, Less Stressed & More Present with Henry Shukman #632
In a world of constant noise, stimulation and busyness, meditation is often framed as another self-improvement tool – something to calm us down, make us more productive or fix what feels broken. But this week’s returning guest believes that this way of thinking completely misses the point. Henry Shukman is an authorised Zen Master and Director of the Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over the years, Henry has taught meditation at organisations including Google, Harvard Business School and the Esalen Institute, and is the co-founder of ‘The Way’ meditation app. Henry and I had the most beautiful conversation when he first appeared on my podcast on Episode 590 and his app ‘The Way’ has had such a profound impact on me, that I wanted to have a second conversation with him to explore deeper the benefits and misconceptions about meditation and the powerful role it can play in our busy, 21st century lives. I have also partnered with The Way for a free March meditation challenges - you can see all details at thewayapp.com/livemore Henry sees meditation not as a technique for becoming a better version of ourselves, but as a way of reconnecting with something far more fundamental. Beneath all the striving, planning and doing, he says, there is already a deep sense of aliveness and meaning. Meditation simply helps us notice it again. In our conversation, we explore: Why having a busy, restless mind does not mean you’re “bad” at meditation – and why that restlessness is actually the very reason the practice exists How modern life keeps our attention relentlessly outward, and why daily stillness can help us reconnect with our inner world Why meditation works best when it’s not treated as another task on the to-do list, but as a place of rest from constant doing Why five minutes a day is often more powerful than occasional long meditation sessions How meditation can subtly change our experience of time, helping life feel richer and fuller Simple, practical guidance on when to meditate, how often - and why comfort matters far more than posture or “doing it right” What stayed with me most from this conversation is Henry’s reminder of how rarely we’re encouraged to turn inward. In a world that constantly pulls our attention outside ourselves, meditation becomes a way of rebuilding that inner relationship – one that many of us didn’t realise we’d lost. Just a few minutes, practised regularly, can change how we relate to our thoughts, our time and our lives. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Wed, 04 Mar 2026 - 634 - Finding Calm in the Chaos - Guided Meditation With Zen Master Henry Shukman #631
I am a big believer in the transformative power of meditation. I also know how hard it can be to start and stick to a daily practice in our busy, modern world. In this special episode of my Feel Better, Live More podcast, I’m inviting you to join me for something that has truly transformed my own life. I’ve teamed up with Zen master Henry Shukman and his meditation app The Way for a 30-day meditation challenge this March to help inspire more of us to build a consistent meditation practice. I’ve tried many meditation apps over the years, but I’ve never found one as effective as The Way. I’ve been using it most mornings for months now, and it has genuinely helped me feel calmer, more relaxed and more present. I love it so much that I recently invested in the company because I truly believe that if more of us meditated regularly, we’d create a calmer, happier and more compassionate world. There’s now a wealth of research showing that meditation can reduce stress, improve focus and even lead to positive structural changes in the brain over time. But we only experience those benefits if we actually practise. In this episode, Henry shares a beautiful guided body scan meditation, reminding us that meditation isn’t another task on the to-do list, but a return to ourselves. Just a few minutes each day can make a profound difference. So, if you are ready to join Henry and me on this 30-day challenge, for free, all you need to do is visit: thewayapp.com/livemore. With 70% of our diet now consisting of ultra-processed foods and conflicting advice everywhere we look, is it any wonder we’re confused about what to eat? Today’s clip is from episode 520 of the podcast with medical doctor and nutritionist, my good friend Dr Rupy Aujla. Fri, 27 Feb 2026 - 632 - Born To Walk: How To Reclaim Your Feet, Fix Your Pain & Transform Your Health with Dr Courtney Conley #629
Walking is something most of us take for granted. We do it to get from A to B, we track our steps on our phones, we might even use it as a bit of exercise. But what if walking is far more than that? What if, quite literally, your life depends on it? Dr Courtney Conley is an internationally recognised authority on foot mechanics and gait dynamics and the founder and creator of Gait Happens, which provides evidence-based foot education for athletes, movement professionals, and regular humans like you and me. She has over 25 years’ worth of clinical experience, and has worked with a wide variety of organisations, including New York Yankees, New York Giants and The San Francisco 49ers. Her first book Walk: Your Life Depends On It is a fantastic read, officially comes out on May 5th, 2026 and is available for pre-order right now. In our conversation, we discuss why walking should be considered a physiological necessity, potentially on a par with sleeping and breathing, why Courtney believes that our feet are the most neglected part of our bodies and how modern footwear has put fashion ahead of function, with some serious unintended consequences. We also discuss why our big toe might be the most important joint in our body, how our walking speed can predict our future health, and why even a small increase in daily steps can dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, dementia and depression. Throughout our conversation, Courtney shares plenty of practical advice, such as simple foot assessments you can do at home, easy exercises to build strength and mobility, and a clear framework for choosing better footwear for yourself and your children. Courtney wants to help as many people as possible reclaim the true function of their feet. Her message is one of hope and empowerment and I am quite sure that this conversation will give you a different perspective about the importance of walking and inspire you to start taking a bit more care of your feet. Wed, 25 Feb 2026 - 631 - How to Achieve Anything You Want in Life with Marie Forleo (Re-release) #628
What’s holding you back in life at the moment? Is there a problem – be it practical or emotional, to do with your health, relationships, work, finance or anything else – that seems insurmountable? Whatever your struggle, my guest on this week’s Feel Better Live More podcast believes that the solution is already within you – that you have what it takes to transform or transcend any challenge you face. She’s Marie Forleo, a US entrepreneur, writer, philanthropist and, above all, an unshakeable optimist. I caught up with Marie on the London leg of a promotional tour for her new self-help book, Everything Is Figureoutable. The title is quite a promise but after listening to what she has to say, I think you’ll be inspired to think the same way. We discuss perfectionism and why comparing ourselves unfavourably to others – so common in this age of social media – can really threaten our creativity. We also discuss the truth about excuses, the liberating difference between ‘can’t’ and ‘won’t’, and why a growth mindset is preferable to a fixed mindset if we want to make changes in our lives. Whatever it is that you want from life, I think Marie’s strategies will shift you into a more positive mindset and help you take action. Most of us spend our lives in conversation – yet very few of us are ever taught how to communicate well. Fri, 20 Feb 2026 - 629 - How To Live Longer and Better: The Secret to Super Ageing with Dr Eric Topol #626
What if the secret to living well into your 80s and 90s is nothing to do with your DNA? What if the longevity hackers have got it wrong, and it’s actually far more simple than you think to become a ‘super ager’? We all want to live a long, happy and healthy life. But with the vast majority of US and UK people over 60 having at least one chronic disease, the odds are currently stacked against us. Or are they? In this enlightening episode, you’ll learn why healthspan matters more than lifespan – and why it’s never too late, or too early, to take action. My guest is Dr Eric Topol, a practising cardiologist, Professor of Molecular Medicine, and one of the top 10 most cited researchers in medicine. Eric has spent his career at the forefront of genomics and artificial intelligence. Yet in his new book Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach To Longevity, he sets out a surprisingly low-tech solution to ageing well. And it’s one that has nothing to do with your parents’ health. In this episode, Eric talks me through what his Wellderly Project – research on remarkably healthy people in their late 80s – revealed about the health metrics that matter. He explains his ‘lifestyle plus’ approach to health, which includes not just the basics like nutrition, exercise and sleep, but evidence-based influences such as environmental toxins, emotional outlook and social connections. His message is an empowering one: making the right choices today could add seven to 10 healthy years to your life, regardless of your family history. We tackle some thought-provoking topics, such as the idea that cancer screening isn’t working, and that forever chemicals and microplastics are far more dangerous than we’ve been led to believe. We discuss the personalisation of healthcare – how knowledge of your own data is the most effective way to drive behaviour change. And Eric shares his positive insights on how AI will be able to help us predict – and take control of – our future health. The ‘big three’ chronic diseases, cancer, heart disease and neurodegeneration, start developing 20 years before we see symptoms. So that’s a big window of time in which you can make a difference to your risk – and a truly empowering message you can start acting on today. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Wed, 18 Feb 2026 - 628 - How To Get Well and Stay Well: 6 Healthy Habits We All Need To Know with Dr Gemma Newman (Re-release) #625
What is it that really makes us healthy? Is it regular trips to the doctor, a swift diagnosis, and medicine when we need it? Or do we need a more holistic approach? Today’s guest believes it is the latter. Dr Gemma Newman has been a family doctor in the NHS for 20 years. She is regularly invited to speak and teach all over the world and is incredibly passionate about treating body, mind and spirit as one - and this forms the basis of her brand new book, Get Well Stay Well - The Six Healing Health Habits You Need To Know. Like me, Gemma increasingly found that her conventional medical training wasn’t yielding positive results for many of her patients - so she decided to take a more open-minded approach, studying nutrition, psychotherapy and a range of other holistic methods and combined them with her conventional medical practice. And, very soon, she began to see radical transformations in the health of her patients. It’s this holistic method that Gemma explains in our conversation today, using the acronym GLOVES - which points to six key areas of life we can address if we want to get well and stay well. They’re ways of thinking, being and doing that should be front and centre in our lifestyles, and, of course, we discuss them all during our conversation together. Crucially, Gemma, believes the first step in any effective, lasting behaviour change is finding self-compassion, and her approach will help you trust your inner wisdom, feel more in control, and stop outsourcing your wellbeing to the doctor’s surgery. And in a world where ‘wellness’ often comes with a hefty price tag, her suggestions are all free. Gemma writes and speaks from the heart and I think you will really enjoy this conversation. Fri, 13 Feb 2026 - 626 - The Healing Power Of Music: How Your Favourite Songs Boost Your Mood, Mind & Mobility with Dr Daniel Levitin #623
Music is medicine. It has the power to heal us. And today’s guest knows it’s something we can self-prescribe, for free, whenever we want to benefit. Dr Daniel Levitin is a neuroscientist, cognitive psychologist and bestselling author. He’s also a former record producer and an accomplished musician who’s brought all those skills together in his latest book, Music As Medicine: How We Can Harness Its Therapeutic Power. As soon as I heard about it, I had to ask Dan onto the podcast to share his wisdom. As a lifelong musician and music fan, I know certain tracks change how I feel. But talking to Dan has opened my mind to just how profound an effect music has on the brain. It doesn’t just shift our mood, it can affect our entire physiology. Dan has spent decades studying this, advising the US Government and working with the National Institutes of Health, to the point where his research is now influencing global health policy. We’ve all experienced the health-giving power of music, perhaps without realising. Now with that knowledge, and Dan’s insights, we can start to put it to therapeutic use. Here’s what fascinates me the most: music doesn’t just hit one part of your brain. Different types activate different regions, in much the same way as certain medications work. And Dan shares some astounding examples of this – from the people with Parkinson’s who relearn to walk, to the marathon runners who don’t feel pain, to the Alzheimer’s patients who can’t recognise loved ones, but can recall how to play an instrument perfectly. The brain regions that process music are deeper, older and more protected. It’s why music communicates emotion in ways that words can’t always match. Throughout our conversation, Dan makes this case that music is our birthright. And it can flood us with feelgood, bonding hormones. So it’s a tool we can turn to for overcoming trauma, processing difficult feelings, or connecting with others. But he doesn’t just want us to listen. Playing an instrument, singing and songwriting all do more than you might expect – and you don’t need to be an expert. The next time I’m strumming my guitar, I won’t just think of it as a hobby. I’ll know I’m doing something profoundly important for my health. And you can too. Whether it’s learning an instrument, having a family singalong in the car, or simply switching on the radio, I’m not sure there’s a simpler, more effective way to feel better. Wed, 11 Feb 2026 - 625 - Mel Robbins on How To Take Control of Your Life With One Simple Habit (Re-release) #622
Mel Robbins is one of the most sort after motivational speakers in the world. Her TED talk has been viewed almost 27 million times and she's also the best-selling author of several books, including her latest one, The High Five Habit: Take Control of Your Life With One Simple Habit. In today's conversation, Mel explains that all of us know what we need to do for the best in any given situation but it’s acting on that knowledge that’s hard. It’s so easy to be impulsive or fall into old habits. And I think this is where Mel really comes into her own. Her approach is all about practical, real life advice that busy people with busy lives can easily implement. A prime example is something that Mel calls the five second rule. This is a rule that stops negative thinking in its tracks, and immediately breaks the feedback loop of procrastination and moves us into taking action. It changes a bias of thinking into a bias of action, giving you the confidence to try when you're full of doubt. In fact, it's so simple that my 11 year old son has already seen its benefits in his own life over the past few weeks. We also talk about The High Five Habit (which is the title of Mel’s new book) - this is the idea that by simply giving yourself a high five in the mirror each morning, you can experience transformative effects in your life. This simple exercise is about recognizing yourself and asking yourself what the person looking back at you in the mirror really needs and by doing so, Mel explains that you are retraining your brains neural pathways and convincing your subconscious that you are someone who is worthy of celebration. This really is a wide ranging and in-depth conversation. There is something quite unique about the connection that Mel has with her audience and the way she delivers her message. I think a lot of it comes down to her raw honesty, and the fact that all of her methods are borne out of her own lived experience. She's been there and she is very happy to share her struggles, her insecurities and her battles. I certainly got a lot out of this conversation and I think you will as well. Fri, 06 Feb 2026 - 623 - The Science of Fascia: How Simple Movements Can Calm Your Mind & Heal Your Body with Jason van Blerk #620
When it comes to feeling better, many of us instinctively start with our minds. We think about our thoughts, our beliefs, our stress levels. But what if a huge part of our emotional and psychological experience is actually being held in our bodies – quite literally – in a remarkable tissue called fascia? This week, I’m joined by Jason van Blerk, one of the co-founders of Human Garage - a global self-care movement that aims to inspire 1 billion people to heal themselves, through simple, accessible movement practices, that they call Fascial Manoeuvres. In our conversation, we explore what fascia actually is, why modern science is only just beginning to catch up with what many practitioners have observed for decades, and how emotions and past experiences may be stored in our physical structure. Jason also shares how different areas of the body seem to relate to different emotional patterns, why posture and mood are so tightly linked, and how changing one can often influence the other. We also talk about stress, and why so many of us feel tense, disconnected, and stuck in our own lives and Jason explains how simple rotational movements, combined with specific breathing patterns, can help “unwind” the body, reduce stress, and leave you feeling lighter, calmer, and grounded. The thing I love the most about Human Garage’s philosophy is that they want to empower people to heal themselves. This is not about needing lifelong treatment, or becoming dependent on a therapist or HCP - it’s about learning a set of practical moves that you can use anywhere, anytime AND with no equipment, to start healing your body and calming your mind. Wed, 04 Feb 2026 - 622 - The New Science of Living a Longer and Healthier Life with Professor Rose Anne Kenny (Re-release) #619
Longevity is a hot topic these days. We’re obsessed with anti-ageing, as if getting older should be avoided or even reversed at all costs! Of course, we can’t do that and I’m not sure we’d really want to. But today’s guest brings valuable insights about what we can do, to make sure we age healthily and happily. Professor Rose Anne Kenny is a medical gerontologist and Regius Professor of Physic and Chair of Medical Gerontology at Trinity College Dublin. She’s the Founding Principal Investigator of Ireland’s largest population study of ageing (TILDA) and the author of the international bestseller Age Proof: The New Science of Living a Longer and Healthier Life. In this conversation, Professor Kenny reveals that while 20 percent of ageing is genetic and can’t be changed, 80 percent is epigenetic – in other words, we have the power to influence how quickly or how slowly we age. Her number one recommendation is having good quality friendships and relationships throughout our lives. Then follows a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and reducing stress. So nothing too surprising, perhaps. But what might surprise you is just how far reaching the effects of these relatively simple measures can be – and how much what you do in your 20s can impact your 80s. We talk about how to avoid metabolic syndrome and why it’s important to know key biological markers throughout life. We take a deep dive into the benefits of community, family, volunteering and inter-generational friendships, and discuss the undercurrent of ageism that prevails in society. Loneliness increased threefold during the pandemic, according to the TILDA study, and it’s left some people feeling afraid to reconnect. Yet isolation is known to cause inflammation, suppress immunity and speed ageing. Professor Kenny believes we should flip convenience on its head when it comes to exercise. Instead of taking the easy option that means moving less, we should look at the ‘harder’ options, such as taking the stairs or carrying heavy bags, as convenient ways to build activity and strength training into our lives. She also shares excellent advice on sex and intimacy, sleeping better, laughing more, and finding purpose all around you. This really is a wonderful and practical conversation that is going to give you a variety of simple ways to play the long game when it comes to ageing. And the empowering message is that it’s never too early and it’s never too late to start. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Sun, 01 Feb 2026 - 621 - BITESIZE | How to Make Change That Actually Lasts | Dr Rangan Chatterjee #618
Why is it that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail? In my opinion, it is because many of us are taking the wrong approach. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Fri, 30 Jan 2026 - 620 - How To Transform Your Metabolic Health & The Surprising Benefits of Walking with Alan Couzens #617
When it comes to improving our health and fitness, most of us have absorbed the same message: work harder, push more, sweat more – basically, that no pain means no gain. But what if that story is not only wrong, what if it is actually holding you back? This week, I sit down with elite endurance coach Alan Couzens to completely reframe how we think about movement, fitness, and fat loss. Alan is both an exercise physiologist and a performance coach. He has spent the past three decades working with a wide range of endurance athletes at all ends of the performance spectrum, from ‘off the couch’ fitness athletes to the very best athletes in all of endurance sport. He shares his incredible wisdom & insights on X and his Substack, ‘The Science of Maximal Athletic Development’ which I would highly recommend if you want to go deeper into the topics we discuss in this week’s episode. Over the past few years, Alan has helped me to understand the critical importance of low intensity movement for health, performance and longevity, and in our conversation, we discuss: Why the ability to burn fat at low intensities is one of the most important markers of true metabolic health Why so many people feel they need to eat every two to three hours How very easy movement can transform your health, your energy, your mood, and even your performance, often more than the hard workouts you think you “should” be doing The need to balance out the stresses of modern life with activities like walking and yoga The importance of building a big aerobic “engine” How best to think about intensity, strength training, VO₂ max, and muscle mass Why it is never too late to start increasing how much you move and experiencing the incredible benefits Alan is someone who I have a huge amount of respect for. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable and up to date with the latest science, he is also someone who has a huge amount of real-world experience helping people to improve their athletic performance and their health. My hope is that this episode serves as a powerful reminder that the human body simply does not work as well as it could, without adequate amounts of movement and that it inspires you to bring more easy movement into your life, in a way that supports your health for many decades to come Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Wed, 28 Jan 2026 - 619 - The Bitter Truth About Sugar with Dr Robert Lustig (Re-release) #616
My guest on this week’s Feel Better Live More podcast is Dr Robert Lustig, Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology at the University of California. He’s a leading public health expert who has long been exposing the myths of modern medicine and the food industry. His passion is communicating how sugar and ultra-processed food is fuelling the chronic disease epidemic that we are all facing today. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease and so much more are caused, in Rob’s view, by the foods that we are eating. In his latest book, Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition and Modern Medicine, he outlines what he calls the ‘hateful eight’ – the eight root causes in our body that underlie all chronic disease. He explains how food and sugar impact on them and, most importantly, suggests strategies to counteract them. In this conversation, Rob explains why sugar is so damaging and explains that just like alcohol, our bodies can cope with sugar in small amounts. But in excess will end up in the liver and ultimately trigger us to get sick. Rob’s decades of clinical experience and research has led to his bold and compelling assertion that the answer to all chronic disease can be found in real food. His solution? To ‘protect the liver, feed the gut’. I think these 6 words are an elegant way of summarising the nutritional advice that all of us should consider taking on board in order to improve our health and wellbeing. We talk about what constitutes ‘real food’ and how different levels of food processing are classified. Rob explains why sugar-sweetened drinks are so disastrous for health, particularly in children – and why diet drinks do just as much damage, if not more. We also talk about TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside) and fascinatingly, Rob outlines the three types of fat gain that we can all experience: subcutaneous (which you can see); visceral (stress-related fat around the middle), and liver fat. It’s only the first of these that you’re likely to notice – but it’s the latter two which we really need to fix, especially as they’re already appearing in kids. This conversation is full of mind-blowing facts and insights but it’s also really empowering and contains simple, practical tips that all of us can use to improve our lives. Fri, 23 Jan 2026 - 617 - Why Decluttering Your Home Can Calm Your Mind & Improve Your Mental Wellbeing with Joshua Fields Millburn #614
What if the biggest source of stress in your life is not your job, inbox, or finances – but the simple fact that you have too much stuff? This week, my guest is Joshua Fields Millburn, co‑founder of The Minimalists, whose documentaries, books and podcast have inspired millions of people around the world to reconsider their own relationship with possessions and success. Joshua grew up with very little money, in a home marked by addiction, violence and instability and, as a young man, became convinced that the solution was to be found in acquiring ‘more’: more income, more status and more material comfort. By the age of 30, he had everything he thought he wanted – the big job title, the nice car, the large house, all the visible signs of having “made it”. And yet, inside, he was anxious, overwhelmed and deeply unhappy. Then, in the space of a single month, his mother died and his marriage ended. Those two events forced him to pause and ask some uncomfortable but essential questions: What am I actually doing with my life? Whose values am I living by? Is this endless consumption really what life is all about? That period of questioning led Joshua towards minimalism – not as a trend or an aesthetic, but as a practical framework for living with greater clarity and intention. in our conversation, we discuss: How external clutter is often an outward reflection of internal clutter Why products so often promise fulfilment but ultimately deliver dissatisfaction The difference between healthy consumption and harmful consumerism Practical rules that make decluttering simpler, including the 30-day minimalism game, the 90/90 approach to clothes and why a “sale price” can often become a “fool’s price” How identity clutter keeps us stuck - when we cling to things, roles or labels, not because we need them, but because we’re afraid of who we’ll be without them How minimalism can improve our health and relationships by creating more time, attention and presence. Joshua is a wonderful human being, a brilliant communicator and someone who thinks deeply about the human experience. He believes that minimalism is the art of “addition through subtraction” - it’s not about having less for the sake of it, but about making space for what matters most. Wed, 21 Jan 2026 - 616 - How Smartphones Are Rewiring Our Brains, Why Social Media is Eradicating Childhood & The Truth About The Mental Health Epidemic with Jonathan Haidt (Re-release) #613
With the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools bill returning to the House of Commons imminently, it’s a key time to make your feelings known. Email your MP https://www.smartphonefreechildhood.org/email. Today’s episode is about a topic that I am truly passionate about - the introduction of social media and smartphones into all aspects of our lives - and what impact this is having on us individually, collectively and, perhaps most urgently, what impact is this having on our children. Jonathan Haidt is arguably one of the worlds’ most eminent psychologists. He is a Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business and the author of 4 best-selling books, including his latest ‘The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness’. In this episode, Jonathan and I explore how the fundamental differences between online and real-world interactions are affecting young people's social, emotional and cognitive development. We discuss why girls face unique risks on social media, from damaged relationships and reputations to harassment, and how gaming and pornography are shaping boys' expectations of relationships. Jonathan also shares some eye-opening data about the link between a decline in teen mental health and the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media. He emphasises the need for collective action to create healthier norms around technology use, both at home and in schools. We dive into practical strategies for parents, including setting clear boundaries and prioritising hobbies and family time. Our conversation also touches on the challenges of navigating technology use in a world where the pace of change has been so fast. Jonathan remains optimistic that we're nearing a tipping point and outlines four key norms we can all adopt with our children—even if they’re already dependent on their phones throughout the day. We also discuss in detail what we believe schools could be doing to help their students have less screen time and the importance of collaborating with other families to support healthier habits. As a parent and a doctor, I'm deeply concerned about the mental health crisis facing our children and young people. But if, as a society, we can come together to raise awareness and take purposeful action, we can create a healthier future for the next generation. I think this is one of the most important conversations that I have ever had on my podcast. Jonathan and I both believe that the rewiring of our children’s brains to be one of the most urgent societal harms that needs addressing. My hope is that you find this conversation eye opening, enlightening and thought provoking - and I very much hope it prompts you to take action. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. It’s easy to believe that we have to dedicate lots of time and energy to exercise. That, unless we’re pushing ourselves to our limits, it’s not worth doing. Today’s clip is from episode 325 of the podcast with neuroscientist and Professor of Neural Science and Psychology, Dr Wendy Suzuki. Every morning Wendy starts her day with 30-minutes of exercise. She knows – from personal experience backed by scientific research – that this makes her more focused, happy, motivated, and even creative. She knows it’ll help her grow new brain cells and neural pathways, long into old age. And she wants you to reap all these benefits too. In this clip, Wendy shares why you don’t need to exercise for hours to gain benefits and how just 10 minutes of exercise can create changes in the brain that go much further than simply boosting our mood. This is a practical and inspiring episode that I’m certain will have you taking action immediately. Fri, 16 Jan 2026 - 614 - How To Use Food To Transform Your Health, Reverse Type 2 Diabetes & Improve Your Mood with Dr David Unwin #611
If you have ever struggled with your weight, low energy, pre-diabetes or even type 2 diabetes, this is a conversation that could change your life. Dr David Unwin is an NHS GP who not only put his own type 2 diabetes into drug free remission, he has also helped over 150 patients do the same in a standard UK general practice – with ordinary people, on ordinary budgets, using food and lifestyle. It’s estimated that around 7/8ths of the adult population are metabolically unhealthy, which means that only a tiny minority of us are truly metabolically well. And this is a serious issue because poor metabolic health is one of the root cause drivers of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s and many forms of cancer. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why I co-founded Do Health https://drchatterjee.com/do-health/ - a personalised health companion, powered by your individual biology and lifestyle - as a way of helping people improve their metabolic health early, well before they get sick in the future. In this week’s episode, we cover: The early signs of poor metabolic health, and why symptoms like fatigue, belly fat and brain fog are often overlooked. Why many issues we see as ‘normal ageing’ are actually signs of insulin resistance. How David himself reversed his own type 2 diabetes and, at the same time, improved his mood, energy and cognition. How reducing starchy carbohydrates if you have metabolic dys-regulation can dramatically improve blood sugar control Why so many of us struggle with bread, pasta, and ultra processed foods – and how food addiction may be silently driving our behaviour. The two women who helped David rethink everything he thought he knew about food, hope and healing And why it’s never too late to work on your metabolic health and why doing so can change every aspect of your life. One of the things I love most about David is his passion. He really is someone who genuinely wants to improve the health and lives of his patients and our hope is this conversation empowers you to make small changes that will improve your blood sugar, weight, energy, and ultimately, your future. Wed, 14 Jan 2026 - 613 - Top 5 Regrets Of The Dying: Life Lessons Everybody Learns Too Late with Bronnie Ware (Re-release) #610
What do you think you might be saying on your deathbed? Will you be looking back at your life with a sense of joy and completeness, or, do you think that perhaps you might be consumed with regret? As this week’s guest shares, “It’s easy to assume that you will live with great health to a ripe old age, then die peacefully in your sleep wearing your favourite pyjamas but it doesn’t work out that way for most people…” Bronnie Ware is an internationally acclaimed speaker and author of the bestselling memoir, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. Published more than 10 years ago, it’s been translated into 32 languages and continues to attract new audiences. The book is about her eight years as an end-of-life carer, the close relationships she formed, and lessons she learned from those dying people, which changed her life forever. In this conversation, we discuss some of the various regrets of the dying and what they can teach us so that we can live better lives, right now. We talk about the concept of choice. Everything we do, or don’t do, has a price – be it time or money. Our culture incentivises what we can measure – salaries, possessions, status, social media ‘likes’ and comments. But Bronnie urges us to realise the sacredness and value of our time. Is something a choice worth making if it means you have to sacrifice time with your loved ones? Is it worth pushing extra hard for the promotion that may bring you more money but also more stress and more time away from home? These are decisions that I think we all need to wrestle with from time to time if we are truly going to be living a contented and intentional life. We also talk about the real meaning of regret, what it means to be courageous, and how self-compassion can help us see our mistakes as a natural part of life and growth. Importantly, Bronnie also defines the qualities and habits she observed in those patients who reached the end of life with no regrets – what can we learn from these people? Death can be a topic that many people shy away from discussing but Bronnie is a wonderful soul who is able to talk about death in a relatable, powerful and authentic way. Appreciating we are going to die is the first step to getting more out of life. This really was a thought-provoking and intimate conversation. I hope you enjoy listening. Fri, 09 Jan 2026 - 611 - How to Stop Overthinking and Start Moving Forward with Dr Shadé Zahrai #608
Most of us want our lives to feel calmer, clearer and more aligned. Yet so often, we hesitate, overthink or delay the changes we know would help us feel better. This week’s guest believes that what holds us back is not a lack of motivation or confidence, but a lack of self-trust, which is the foundation that shapes everything from our habits to our relationships. This week on, I’m joined by Dr Shadé Zahrai. Shadé is a behavioural researcher, award-winning peak performance educator and leading authority on confidence and self-doubt. In her new book, Big Trust: Rewire Self-Doubt, Find Your Confidence and Fuel Success, her message is simple: we need to stop getting in our own way, loosen the grip of self-doubt and learn how to back ourselves when it counts. Many of Shadé’s insights are shaped by her own journey. After years in corporate roles that were filled with intense self-doubt and even physical anxiety, she found herself starting again when the pandemic hit and her work fell away overnight. Creating simple videos from home to support others became an unexpected turning point - and ultimately the foundation of the work she does today. During our conversation, we discuss: Why self-trust sits at the heart of confidence, action and meaningful change, and how waiting to ‘feel ready’ keeps so many of us stuck. The four key attributes that make up self-trust, how our identity shapes our behaviour and why small daily choices become meaningful “proof points” of who we want to become. Why confidence doesn’t come first, and why self-trust, not motivation, is what allows us to take action. How repeatedly breaking promises to ourselves erodes our identity, and why keeping small commitments rebuilds a sense of capability and worth. The powerful connection between our inner narrative and our wellbeing, and how shifting our story changes the way we experience life. Shadé believes that we are not defined by our doubts but by the choices we make when doubt appears. This episode offers a compassionate, practical guide to strengthening the trust we place in ourselves and invites us to stop outsourcing our worth to external validation. Only then can we reconnect with our core values and begin living from a place of clarity and courage. I hope you enjoy listening. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Wed, 07 Jan 2026 - 610 - How To Reinvent Your Life in 2026: 5 Powerful Habits That Really Work! with Dr Rangan Chatterjee #607
For this bonus New Year’s Day episode, I wanted to speak to you directly about stress, so you can take action to stop it controlling your life in 2026. A bit like my Boxing Day podcast a few days ago, his episode is designed to gently inspire you at the start of the year, to help you reflect on your life, and to encourage you to create positive change in the months ahead. So I’m sharing with you the five simple habits that I know will help you reduce the impact of stress and transform your wellbeing this year. In this episode I reveal why it’s so important to: Have a morning routine – to dramatically reduce early micro stress doses and positively shape the rest of your day. Learn a breathing technique you can take anywhere – because the way you breathe is powerful information for your body. Stop taking things personally – because learning to create space between what happens and how you respond is a surefire stress reliever. Practice true prevention – and stop worrying about your future health, with my revolutionary new app, Do Health. Find out how you can be one of the first to try it! www.drchatterjee.com/do And prioritise your sleep – by optimising light exposure, being aware of caffeine and creating a calming evening routine. I genuinely hope this episode helps you see stress differently and reminds you that small, consistent changes can have a profound impact. A little stress is part of life – but chronic stress doesn’t have to be. And if you want to find out more about optimising your health in 2026, my book Happy Mind Happy Life is available TODAY in a brand new format in the UK, in its original format in many other countries and as an audiobook which I narrate all over the world! Thu, 01 Jan 2026 - 609 - 5 Simple Ways To Transform Your Happiness in 2026 with Dr Rangan Chatterjee #606
Is happiness a skill you can develop? Or is it a place you find yourself, if you’re lucky? Today’s podcast is a bonus episode that I’ve recorded, from me to you, to demonstrate that yes, happiness is about more than just chance. These special Boxing Day podcasts are becoming a bit of a tradition now (look out for one I’ll be releasing on New Year’s Day too). And in this one, I share five powerful ideas with you – five happiness habits that can transform your life in meaningful ways. They’re all explored in much greater detail in my book Happy Mind Happy Life: 10 Simple Ways to Feel Great Every Day, which is being re-published in the UK in an exciting new format on 1 January 2026. But you can leverage your happiness levels right away by listening today. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll learn: 1. Happiness is a Skill - Discover the difference between ‘junk happiness’ and ‘core happiness’ to feel more content, in control, and aligned with your values. 2. Define Success for Yourself - Imagine yourself on your deathbed and identify three things you’ll wish you had done. What can you do now to move toward that ending? 3. Eliminate Choice - We make thousands of decisions a day, and each one drains mental energy. By creating routines and reducing choice, you can reduce that stress. 4. Make Time Stand Still - Identify ‘flow state’ activities that make you lose track of time, and schedule them as investments in your happiness. 5. Seek Out Friction - If someone upsets you, ask yourself why their words affected you so much. Rewriting their story with compassion will increase your own sense of control. I hope this episode helps you and your family cultivate lasting happiness in 2026 and beyond. I explore all these ideas and many more in my newly formatted book Happy Mind Happy Life - available here as a paperback or as an audiobook, which I am narrating. Fri, 26 Dec 2025 - 608 - BITESIZE | The 5 Minute Morning Habit That Can Transform Your Life | Dr Rangan Chatterjee #605
Journalling regularly can help improve sleep, lead to better decision making and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has also been shown to decrease emotional stress, make it easier to turn new behaviours into long term habits, improve the quality of our relationships and, ultimately, help us lead more mindful and intentional lives. Today’s clip is from episode 413 of the podcast which was a solo episode I recorded to celebrate the launch of my ‘3 Question Journal’ where I outlined the transformative power of journaling. Over the years, I’ve recommended a journalling practice to thousands of my patients, and I’ve experienced the benefits first-hand in my own life too. In this clip, I share a simple way to begin each day by asking yourself three powerful questions. They are deceptively simple, and answering them will take less than 5 minutes, but doing so regularly can prove transformative. Fri, 19 Dec 2025 - 607 - How To Reconnect With Your Intuition & Learn To Trust Yourself Again with Dr Tara Swart #604
What is intuition? What happens when we die? And, how does trauma get stored in our bodies? These are just a few of the fascinating themes I explore in today’s episode with returning guest, Dr Tara Swart. Tara is a neuroscientist, a former medical doctor & psychiatrist, a lecturer at MIT, an executive coach and author of 2 books, including her very latest The Signs: The New Science of How to Trust Your Instincts. In this episode, Tara shares her own personal story about love, loss, and learning to trust herself again, after the death of her husband, Robin. This life changing experience left her questioning her deepest beliefs as a scientist, when in the midst of her grief, she started noticing unusual signs that she felt - she was unable to ignore. At first, she was sceptical, but these moments gradually helped her reconnect with her intuition in ways she never expected. In our conversation, we explore: What intuition really is and how to start accessing it again The gut-brain connection, and how emotions, trauma, and even grief can be stored (and released) in the body. The practical tools and techniques that helped Tara - and can help you - rediscover your own intuition, including journaling, creative practices and nature How to gently challenge your beliefs and open yourself to possibility (even if, like Tara, you’re sceptical at first). Reflections on what science can and can’t explain - and why sometimes, believing in something greater (be it love, the universe, or connection itself) can be a healing force. How to help your children (or yourself!) grow up with a stronger trust in their inner wisdom, without fear or ridicule. We also talk about the disconnection that many of us feel in the modern world, the transformative power of nature and the many different ways in which humans try to make sense of death. This is a raw, honest and thought-provoking conversation that I’m certain will leave you feeling inspired and eager to rediscover your own inner wisdom. Fri, 12 Dec 2025 - 605 - How Kindness Boosts Your Immune System, The Power of Visualisation & The Importance of Empathy with Dr David Hamilton #602
This is the time of year that reminds us to be grateful, kind and spend time with the people we love. To celebrate, I have decided to re-release a conversation that took place on this podcast almost 6 years ago now with the wonderful David Hamilton. David is a scientist, researcher and one of the world's leading experts in the science of kindness. He is also the author of multiple bestselling books including Why Kindness Is Good For You and How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body. This conversation was actually recorded all the way back in February 2020, one month before the start of COVID. But, as with most of the conversations on my podcast, the content within it is timeless and just as relevant today as it was when we actually recorded it. In our conversation, we explore many different themes including: How empathy and kindness can impact various markers of our health, including the functioning of our immune systems and our cardiovascular health Why David calls oxytocin the ‘kindness hormone’ How exactly we can use visualisation to improve the quality of our lives, The science of the placebo effect The importance of connection and empathy in healthcare And the phenomenal ripple effect of kindness, whereby one act of kindness can lead to one hundred and twenty-five more. David is such a wonderful human being who is doing his very best to help create a kinder and more compassionate world. I think this conversation is perfect for the current time of year and I hope that it serves as a gentle reminder that being kind is not only good for the world around us, it’s good for ourselves as well……. Fri, 05 Dec 2025 - 603 - How to Stay Strong, Mobile and Active at Any Age with Elite Ski Coach Warren Smith #600
Today’s episode is with someone who is regarded as one of the best ski coaches on the planet, yet this is not a conversation about skiing. The things my guest has experienced over the years through teaching, coaching, and working in the mountains in unpredictable conditions hold valuable lessons for us all. Warren Smith is one of Britain’s leading professional free skiers, an Internationally Qualified Performance Coach, creator of the Warren Smith Ski Academy and someone who has spent several decades helping people understand their bodies better to help them move and ski with more freedom. Warren has been a sponsored Volkl athlete for over 10 years and is one of the most innovative instructors working in the Alps and is held in high regard for the research and development he carries out combining Ski Technique, Ski Biomechanics and Ski Physiology. As well as coaching tens of thousands of recreational skiers, he is also well known for being the ski instructor that many high profile individuals seek out when wanting to improve their skills, including Prince Harry, Heston Blumenthal, Laurence Dallaglio and Bradley Wiggins. I myself have known Warren for around two decades having sought him out in my mid 20s when I first started getting into skiing because I was deeply fascinated by his philosophy, which made a lot of intuitive sense to me. In our conversation, we discuss: Why so many of us feel limited by our bodies and how simple, five-minute functional exercises can help Why differences in strength or mobility between the two sides of the body are incredibly common, and how they affect everything from skiing to running to daily movement. What Warren’s injuries have taught him about resilience, patience and rehabilitation. Why fear on the mountain mirrors fear in life, and how breaking challenges into smaller steps can help us stay calm and move forward. The mental and emotional benefits of elevation and nature, and why gaining perspective from a higher vantage point can help us reset and unwind. The life lessons Warren learned from surviving an avalanche and losing friends in the mountains Warren’s incredible life story from growing up in a council state to living in one of the most prestigious ski resorts in the world. This is not just a conversation about skiing, but one that reminds us that when we prepare well, stay curious and look after ourselves , we can keep doing the things we love for longer. Fri, 28 Nov 2025 - 601 - How To Build & Maintain Successful Relationships & The Surprising Ways That Technology Can Help with Mo Gawdat #598
Modern life gives us endless ways to connect with others, so why is it that so many of us struggle to build loving and supportive relationships? This week, I’m joined once again by Mo Gawdat for the second part of our inspiring two-part conversation. Mo is the former Chief Business Officer of Google [X], the author of multiple bestselling books and a world leading expert in technology and AI. In last week’s episode, we explored Mo’s remarkable insights into happiness, grief and the nature of life and death. In this second part, our conversation shifts towards love — what it really is, why it’s so challenging for many of us and how greater self-awareness can transform the way we relate to others. Mo believes love itself is simple, but that relationships are complex. He shares his reflections on breakups, long-term commitment, emotional patterns and why so many of us misunderstand what we truly need. We also explore the fascinating psychology behind modern dating, the unhelpful design of many dating apps and the maths that quietly shapes our search for a partner. During this incredible episode, we discuss: Why Mo believes love is simple, but relationships are difficult - and the common mistakes we make in both. The emotional patterns, habits and conditioning that shape how we show up in love. Why modern dating has become so challenging, and how commercial dating apps can make things worse. The maths behind dating and why our expectations, checklists and biases make it harder to find a partner. Why many relationship problems stem from misunderstandings, unmet needs and unexamined emotional triggers. How increasing self-awareness can transform the way we love, relate and resolve conflict. A significant part of our conversation focuses on Emma, the AI companion Mo has built to help people understand themselves better, navigate conflict with more compassion and approach dating and relationships with greater emotional clarity. You may feel sceptical about this, but Mo explains how Emma is designed not to replace human relationships, but to support them: improving communication, breaking unhelpful patterns and encouraging deeper connection. As always, Mo brings a depth of understanding to a topic that we can all struggle with at various times during our lives. What he does so brilliantly in this episode is remind us that at the heart of any meaningful relationship lies self-understanding, compassion and honesty. When we become more aware of our old patterns, needs and blind spots, we give ourselves a chance to love - and be loved - in a way that helps us find the connection we truly need - and desire. Fri, 21 Nov 2025 - 599 - How to Find Happiness, Peace & Purpose Even When Life Feels Hard with Mo Gawdat #596
We all want to be happy. Yet the harder we chase it, the more elusive happiness it can seem. This week’s returning guest podcast believes the answer does not lie in changing our circumstances, but in changing how we see them. Mo Gawdat is the former Chief Business Officer of Google [X] and the author of multiple bestselling books, including Solve for Happy and That Little Voice in Your Head. Following the tragic death of his son Ali, Mo has made happiness his primary topic of research, diving deeply into literature and conversing on the topic with some of the wisest people in the world. Mo actually came on my podcast to talk about relationships and how he believes technology and AI can help us transform them, but when we started chatting our conversation went off in a completely different direction. We ended up having a wonderfully deep and thought provoking conversation that ended up being almost 3 hours - so, I have decided to split up the conversation into 2 different episodes. This week’s episode is the first half of our conversation, and the second half will come out next week. In this week’s episode, Mo shares what he’s learned about happiness, suffering and the true nature of life and death. We explore what it really means to say that “happiness is a choice,” and why that perspective can coexist with deep compassion for pain and loss. During our conversation, we discuss: ● Why happiness isn’t dependent on external circumstances – and how it’s possible to find peace even in difficult times. ● How reframing our thoughts and expectations can shift our emotional experience of life. ● What Mo learned about happiness growing up in Egypt, and how seeing suffering around him shaped his sense of gratitude. ● The powerful lessons he drew from losing his son, Ali, and how grief can open a path to love and meaning. ● Why suffering can be one of our greatest teachers, showing us what truly matters. ● How our thoughts can keep pain alive – and why letting go of the mental replay of past events is an act of wisdom. ● Mo’s belief that death is not the end, and how physics and spirituality can point to the same truth about consciousness. Mo helps us all to see that happiness isn’t fragile or fleeting; it’s a state of being we can nurture, even when life feels hard. His story is a testament to the strength of the human heart and our endless capacity to find meaning in love. I hope you enjoy listening. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Fri, 14 Nov 2025 - 597 - The Day I Met My Hero: Jon Bon Jovi on Finding Joy, Overcoming Adversity, Growing Old & Spirituality #594
Have you ever thought about meeting your own heroes and what you would actually say to them if you did? When I was growing up, I used to idolise Jon Bon Jovi. I had a huge flag of him up on my bedroom wall and would listen to every bit of music he released with his band, watch every interview that he gave and read every book I could find about him. I tried to write songs like him, grew my hair like him and even started wearing cowboy boots - just like he did. And, to date, I have seen Bon Jovi in concert on 33 different occasions. So, when the opportunity to talk to him on my podcast came up, you can probably imagine how I felt. Jon Bon Jovi is the frontman for the Grammy Award-winning band Bon Jovi. They have been together for over 40 years, have sold an incredible 130 million albums and performed in over 50 countries around the world for more than 40 million fans. In 2018, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recognition of their longevity and impact on popular music and outside of his music career, Jon and his wife run the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to bringing about positive change and helping those in need “one SOUL at a time.” Yet, beyond the global fame, the sold-out arenas and extensive charitable work, I discovered a man who’s thoughtful, grounded and genuinely curious about what it means to live well. During our incredible conversation, we discuss: The key ingredients of a happy life: gratitude, friendship, contentment, joy and love. What Jon has learned about long-term relationships – in marriage, friendship and with his band. How losing his voice and undergoing vocal surgery became a lesson in acceptance, patience and rediscovering gratitude. The real cost of success, and why he believes it’s always been worth it. Why optimism has always been at the heart of Bon Jovi’s music, and why the world needs it now more than ever. What fame can take from you, and how to stay grounded and authentic in the face of it. Jon’s reflections on ageing, spirituality and finding peace within himself. His advice for anyone who has a dream but feels afraid to take the first step. Having this incredible opportunity to speak with Jon reminded me why his music has always resonated so deeply with me. Beneath the anthems and achievements lies a simple message – that happiness, optimism and connection are what truly make life meaningful. Perhaps Jon’s story – and this conversation – will encourage you to think about what brings you joy, who brings you meaning, and how you might share a little more of yourself with the world. They say never meet your heroes - and I understand why they do. But, hand on heart, I can honestly tell you that there is a little boy inside of me, who’s pretty pleased he got to meet his. Research has found that a staggering 88 percent of the UK workforce has experienced a degree of burnout since 2020. It’s characterised by feeling exhausted all the time, with no energy for everyday tasks, and little enjoyment in everyday activities. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 329 of the podcast, which was a solo episode I recorded all about the rising issue of burnout. In that episode, I outlined the 7 signs that may indicate you are on the road to burnout and shared 10 practical tools to help. In this clip, I walk you through 5 of those simple habits you can think about introducing into your life that can quickly start to help. I truly hope you find this episode helpful and, of course, if you know someone in your life who could benefit from listening, please do share this episode with them. Fri, 07 Nov 2025 - 595 - The 7 Lifestyle Habits That Can Protect Your Brain At Any Age with Dr Dale Bredesen #592
Alzheimer’s disease is something many of us have seen affect our parents or grandparents, and it can feel like one of the most daunting challenges of ageing. But what if the narrative we’ve been told isn’t the whole truth? What if prevention – and even reversal – is possible? Today, I’m delighted to welcome Dr Dale Bredesen to my Feel Better, Live More podcast, a conversation I’ve been looking forward to for many years. An internationally recognised expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, Dale’s career has been guided by a simple idea: that Alzheimer’s as we know it is not just preventable, but reversible. His dedicated pursuit of the science that makes this a reality has placed him at the vanguard of neurological research and led to the discoveries that today underlie the ReCODE Protocol™. As well as multiple scientific publications, Dale has written about his findings and research in his first book: ‘The End of Alzheimer’s’, and his very latest book The Ageless Brain is a fantastic read about the simple things we can all do to improve the health of our brains today and across the duration of our lives. In this powerful conversation, we discuss: Why Alzheimer’s is not one single disease, but the end result of multiple systems in the body becoming imbalanced. The four stages of cognitive decline, and why identifying problems early can be a game-changer for prevention and treatment. The role of genetics, including ApoE4, in dementia risk, and why knowing your genetic status can empower you to take action. How inflammation, toxins and energy deficits all contribute to brain decline – and what we can do to address them. Real-life case studies of people who have improved, even those in the early stages of dementia. The seven key lifestyle factors that can protect and optimise brain health at any age, from diet and exercise to sleep, stress and detoxification. Dale also shares his vision of a future where cognitive decline is no longer seen as an inevitable part of ageing, but as something we can act on early – much like we already do with heart disease or cancer - and this opens the door to simple, everyday steps we can all take to protect our brains. If you’ve witnessed Alzheimer’s in your family, it’s easy to feel powerless. But as Dale explains, there is much we can do to reduce our risk, support brain health and hold onto the connections and memories that matter most. I hope you enjoy listening. Fri, 31 Oct 2025 - 593 - Healing the Body with Meditation: Simple Daily Practices For Health & Happiness with Henry Shukman #590
Do you ever feel as if you’re too busy to meditate, or that you’re simply not very good at it? This is something that so many people experience, yet today’s guest believes that this is ONLY because of a fundamental misunderstanding about what meditation really is. Henry Shukman is an authorised Zen Master and Spiritual Director of the Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over the years, Henry has taught meditation at organisations including Google, Harvard Business School and the Esalen Institute, AND he is also the co-founder of ‘The Way’ meditation app, which offers a unique pathway of training designed to help people deepen their practice. Henry is ALSO an award-winning poet and the author of several books, including his latest ‘Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening’, which explores meditation as a path to compassion, healing and presence. In our conversation, we explore how meditation can reconnect us with kindness, compassion and a deeper sense of being alive, including: Why meditation isn’t about achieving something new, but about rediscovering love – whether that’s compassion for ourselves, care for others or a deeper sense of connection with life itself How even just five minutes each day can begin to calm the nervous system, ease stress and help us feel more present Why kindness and compassion sit at the heart of health and happiness, and how practices like meditation help us embody them more fullyHenry’s personal story of living with severe eczema, and how meditation helped him transform both his physical health and his relationship with himself The “four inns” of meditation – mindfulness, support, absorption and awakening – and how they offer a clear and practical roadmap for practice Practical, accessible ways to bring meditation into life, from stacking it with other habits to finding moments of stillness amid a busy day This episode is a great reminder that meditation isn’t about adding another chore to your list or trying to empty your mind of all thoughts. Many people find it difficult at first and assume they’re not cut out for it, but as Henry explains, there’s no such thing as a bad meditation – the only one that doesn’t count is the one you don’t do. It’s about pausing, being still and coming back to the peace and presence that are part of being human. In a world that constantly pushes us to do more, Henry’s message is a reassuring one: that peace, kindness and love are not rewards to be earned, but parts of who we already are. Reading Henry’s most recent book had a profound impact on me, and I hope that this conversation brings you some of the same insight and inspiration. I hope you enjoy listening. Thu, 23 Oct 2025 - 591 - How to Stay Mobile, Independent & “Unbreakable” As You Age with Dr Vonda Wright #588
Bone health is something most of us don’t think about until much later in life, but the reality is that the foundation for strong, healthy bones is built decades earlier – and what we do in our 20s, 30s and 40s can make all the difference to our health and strength in later years. Today, I’m delighted to welcome Dr Vonda Wright. Vonda is an orthopaedic surgeon and internationally recognised authority on active ageing and mobility. She believes that with mobility, smart nutrition and building relationships, we can harness our own power to control 70% of our health and ageing. Vonda specialises in sports medicine and is one of only a few female orthopaedic surgeons in the United States. She currently serves as the inaugural Chief of Sports Medicine for the Northside Hospital Orthopaedic Institute and is the founding director of the Performance and Research Initiative for Masters Athletes (PRIMA). She is also the author of several books, including her latest, Unbreakable: A Woman’s Guide to Ageing With Power, combines cutting-edge science with practical tools to help us protect our bones and our future health. In this fantastic conversation, we discuss: Why osteoporosis isn’t just a disease of old age, but one that begins much earlier in life, often decades before the first fracture. The idea of the “critical decade” – why our mid-30s to mid-40s are such a pivotal window for building bone strength, especially for women approaching menopause. The key lifestyle factors that influence bone density, from nutrition and protein intake to resistance training and impact exercise, and why it’s never too late to start. How scans such as DEXA and REMS can give a clearer picture of bone quality and help us take action before problems arise. The cultural and societal pressures that shape women’s health behaviours, and how these can sometimes work against long-term bone resilience. Simple, practical strategies for protecting your bones at every stage of life, supporting independence, mobility and confidence as we age. Vonda also shares her vision of ageing with strength, independence and vitality, and why she believes we can all take proactive steps to remain “unbreakable”. As Vonda explains, we have more control over our bone health than we might realise - and that knowledge should feel both comforting and empowering. Caring for our bones is really about caring for our future selves. By taking simple, consistent steps today, we can build the strength and confidence to live the way we want for years to come. Thu, 16 Oct 2025 - 589 - The Science of Sunlight: How 20 Minutes a Day Could Transform Your Mood, Energy, Sleep & Longevity with Dr Roger Seheult #586
When we think of sunlight, vitamin D is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But the truth is, the full spectrum of light that we get exposed to when we spend time outside plays a vital role in how we sleep, how we feel and even how our cells create energy. This week’s returning guest is Dr Roger Seheult, who believes that sunlight is one of the most accessible and underutilised tools we have for improving health – and the science he shares is compelling. I’m delighted to welcome back to my Feel Better, Live More podcast for our third conversation. Roger is a quadruple board-certified physician in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Riverside, and Assistant Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University. Alongside his clinical practice, he co-founded MedCram, a medical education platform with over one million YouTube subscribers, widely used by hospitals and medical schools worldwide. Roger is also a sought after lecturer and has received multiple awards for his contributions to medicine and education. His passion lies in making complex medical science accessible, and he regularly lectures to schools, hospitals and media outlets. In this conversation, we discuss: Why deficiency in sunlight can show up as fatigue, poor sleep, inflammation or even raised cholesterol. The three “macronutrients” of light – visible, ultraviolet and infrared – and how each plays a different role in mood, immunity and cellular energy. How infrared light penetrates deep into the body, supporting mitochondrial function and how it may help protect against diseases such as diabetes and dementia. Why spending 15–20 minutes a day outside – even in the shade – can be enough to recharge our cells. The growing evidence that sunlight exposure lowers the risk of all-cause mortality, cancer and heart disease. Practical strategies for getting the benefits of sunlight safely, even if you live in colder climates or spend much of your day indoors. Roger also shares his “eight laws of health” – simple, timeless principles that include nutrition, rest, fresh air and sunlight – and explains how neglecting them leads to the chronic conditions he often sees in his work in intensive care. This is a fascinating conversation that will change how you think about sunlight. It isn’t just something that makes us feel good – it’s a fundamental part of how our bodies stay healthy. And the best part? It’s free and available to us all. I hope you enjoy listening. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Thu, 09 Oct 2025 - 587 - How to Build Inner Strength, Stay Grounded and Keep Going Through Life’s Challenges with Sifan Hassan #584
It’s easy to be inspired by success, but the real lessons often lie in what it took to get there. After all, true strength isn’t just physical; it’s found in how we face change, challenge and the unknown. In this episode of my Feel Better, Live More podcast, I sit down with one of the most extraordinary athletes of our time, Sifan Hassan. Sifan is a Dutch middle- and long-distance runner, celebrated for her versatility and achievements in athletics. Born in Ethiopia and raised in the Netherlands as a refugee, she is known for competing at the highest level in a wide range of distances, including the 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, and the marathon. She is a two-time World Champion, an Olympic medallist, and holds multiple European Championship titles. Her journey from refugee to Olympic and World Champion has captivated the world, not just for what she’s achieved, but for how she approaches life. Sifan’s story is one of courage, faith, and relentless curiosity. In this wonderful conversation, we explore: How growing up in Ethiopia and later seeking asylum in the Netherlands shaped Sifan’s inner strength, perspective and deep appreciation for opportunity The role running played in navigating life in a new country, and how it offered focus, purpose and belonging Why failure, fear and self-doubt have been central to her journey, and how she’s learned to embrace them as essential parts of growth and performance How Sifan continues to find joy in running, despite the pressures of elite sport, and why staying curious matters more to her than winning What her training now looks like behind the scenes - including the shifts she’s made to prioritise recovery, longevity and mental balance Why she sees rest, sleep and routine as forms of discipline, and how simplicity keeps her grounded What she’s come to understand about identity, letting go of perfection, and finding peace with who she is, beyond the medals You don’t need to be an athlete to connect with Sifan’s story; it speaks to something deeply human in all of us. In a world that often celebrates outcomes, this conversation invites us to embrace the process of becoming, adapting, and learning. Sifan’s perspective is a beautiful example of what it means to stay rooted in who we are, even when life takes us far from where we began. I hope you enjoy listening.
