Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 907 - Want to Be Happier? Cherish Time Over Money
Want to Be Happier? Value Time Over Money 18 Nov 2020 --- Here’s how to know if you’re making enough time for happiness, and what to do if you’re not. A preponderance of evidence shows that the feeling of having enough time — “time affluence” — is now at a record low in the United States. This situation is so severe it could even be described as a “famine” — a collective cultural failure to effectively manage our most precious resource, time. Time poverty exists across all economic strata, and its effects are profound. Research shows that those who feel time-poor experience lower levels of happiness and higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. They experience less joy. They laugh less. They exercise less and are less healthy. Their productivity at work is diminished. They are more likely to get divorced. Harvard Business School’s Ashley Whillans offers advice on how to reclaim your time--and be happier. Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 905 - Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel on the Trials and Opportunities of Inheriting a Visionary Leader's Legacy
Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel on the Challenges and Opportunities of Following a Visionary Leader 29 Sep 2023 --- Jason Buechel, the CEO of Whole Foods, faced a unique challenge when he took over from cofounder John Mackey, who had been the company's CEO for 42 years. Buechel, who became CEO in 2022, had the opportunity to work closely with Mackey for nine years and had an 11-month transition period to prepare for the role. However, stepping into the shoes of a larger-than-life executive like Mackey was not only a personal challenge but a significant adjustment for Whole Foods employees, from the C-suite to the hundreds of local stores. Buechel recognized the importance of connecting with the team members, addressing their concerns, and assuring them that the company's culture, quality standards, and core values would remain intact under his leadership. He emphasized the need for authenticity and being true to oneself while also supporting the company's vision and direction. For this episode of our video series “The New World of Work”, HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with Buechel to discuss: • How authenticity is crucial in leadership and sustainability efforts, as companies need to ensure their actions align with their core values and mission • How focusing on the happiness, growth, and development of employees not only leads to higher employee retention but improves customers’ experience • While CEO roles can vary depending on the company, for Buechel the focus is primarily on internal leadership and supporting the vision and growth of the organization This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. How Salary Transparency Can Help You (and Your Workplace) 26 Oct 2023 --- How much money do you make? Did that question make you nervous? Uncomfortable? Or, maybe, excited? Historically speaking, talking about your salary (especially at work) was off limits. But things are changing — “salary transparency” is becoming the new norm, and for good reason. When people are aware of how much those around them make, everyone gets paid more fairly, which makes workplaces more equitable. But what does salary transparency actually look like in the workplace? How do you broach the subject with your coworkers, boss, friends, and even strangers? Ascend editor Kelsey Alpaio talks with David Burkus, an organizational psychologist, to learn more about the pros and cons of salary transparency, how it can play out at the company level, and how to make it work for you. She also speaks with Hannah Williams, a content creator who makes a living off of asking strangers how much money they make, and Carolyn Kopprasch, the Chief of Staff at Buffer, a company who is practicing “radical transparency” by listing all of their employees’ salaries online. Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 888 - What Having a "Growth Mindset" Actually Means
What Having a "Growth Mindset" Actually Means 9 Feb 2022 --- Individuals who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others tend to achieve more than those who believe their talents are innate gifts. 00:00 The meaning of "growth mindset" has become distorted 00:59 Misconception 1: "I already have it, and I always have" 01:27 Misconception 2: A growth mindset is just about praising and rewarding effort 01:54 Misconception 3: Just espouse a growth mindset, and good things will happen 02:16 Here are some traits of companies that encourage growth mindset 02:50 But, we all have our own fixed-mindset triggers to overcome This is because they worry less about looking smart and they put more energy into learning. When entire companies embrace a growth mindset, their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they also receive far greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation. In contrast, people at primarily fixed-mindset companies report more of only one thing: cheating and deception among employees, presumably to gain an advantage in the talent race. Based on the HBR article by Carol Dweck: What Having a “Growth Mindset” Actually Means (https://hbr.org/2016/01/what-having-a-growth-mindset-actually-means). This video is co-produced with @EMERITUS. Sat, 19 Sep 2026 - 884 - Applying Porter’s Five Forces to Fix U.S. Politics | HBR IdeaCast
Applying Porter’s Five Forces to Fix U.S. Politics | HBR IdeaCast 2 Feb 2023 --- Katherine Gehl, a former CEO and the founder of the Institute for Political Innovation, and Michael Porter, a professor at Harvard Business School, apply his Five Forces framework to explain why U.S. politics are dysfunctional. They argue that the Republican and Democratic parties make up an industry duopoly with high barriers to entry and low consumer power, and that the resulting lack of competition incentivizes these two dominant players to avoid compromises with majority support. Gehl and Porter provide specific innovations on how to enhance competition and better serve the public, including nonpartisan primary elections and ranked-choice voting. Gehl and Porter are coauthors of the new book The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy and the HBR article “Fixing U.S. Politics.” This episode originally aired on HBR IdeaCast on June 23, 2020. Sat, 19 Sep 2026 - 878 - The Surprising Problems with Pursuing Your Passion
The Surprising Problems with Pursuing Your Passion 23 Jan 2023 --- Insisting on doing work you love can have downsides. Finding a job aligned with your passion might take months or years, sacrificing economic stability. What’s more, investing so much of our sense of identity in paid employment incurs an existential risk to our sense of self-worth, should layoffs or other business changes occur. The key is to be deliberate about how large of a role work should have in your life, says Erin Cech, author or “The Trouble With Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality” (https://www.amazon.com/Trouble-Passion-Searching-Fulfillment-Inequality/dp/0520303229). More on this topic: https://hbr.org/2022/10/striking-a-balance-between-your-passion-and-your-paycheck More on Erin Cech: https://lsa.umich.edu/soc/people/faculty/erin-cech.html 00:00 Pursuing your passion seems like a no brainer, but it can be based on false assumptions. 00:31 One of those false assumptions is that the labor market is meritocratic and fair. It ain’t. 02:11 For example, let’s look at two aspiring programmers from very different backgrounds. 03:25 Employers love passion, but maybe not for the reasons you think. 04:40 Passion won’t insulate you from the stresses of the modern world of work. 06:30 Alright, what’s a healthier way to orient yourself towards work, then? Here's how to nail it. Let’s be real: “Tell me about yourself” isn’t even a question. It sparks instant anxiety for most. Where do I start? What’s most important? How much of myself do I reveal? Also, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 am I? Innovation Editor Christine Liu decided to tackle these questions head-on with the help of Joel Schwartzberg, author of, “Get to the Point! Sharpen Your Message and Make Your Words Matter.” With a few practical steps--like matching who you are with the company’s needs and mission--you’ll have more answers than questions next time someone says, “Tell me about yourself.” Filmed in Fall 2019. --------------------------------------------------------------------- At Harvard Business Review, we believe in management. Crate & Barrel CEO Janet Hayes on Navigating Turbulent Times for Retail 16 Dec 2022 --- As CEO of retail giant Crate & Barrel, Janet Hayes has a unique perspective on how the pandemic disrupted consumers’ behaviors and altered attitudes. Lifestyles changed drastically, and so did customers’ demands for their homes and, increasingly, home offices. Crate & Barrel had to nimbly react to—and, ideally, anticipate—these shifts. Hayes says the company weathered the market’s turbulence by staying focused on what remains consistent: customers’ core expectations of value, quality, inspiration, and purpose. This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Sun, 13 Sep 2026 - 865 - How to Disagree with Someone More Powerful: The Harvard Business Review Guide
How to Disagree with Someone More Powerful: The Harvard Business Review Guide 26 Oct 2021 --- Just agreeing with your boss (or your boss’s boss) feels easier, but it’s often better to voice your disagreement. HBR's Amy Gallo shows how. 00:00 Let’s say you disagree with someone more powerful than you. Should you say so? 00:30 Before deciding, do a risk assessment 01:39 When and where to voice disagreement 02:20 What to say ... 04:00 … and how to say it 05:38 Ok, let’s recap! How exactly do you voice dissent with your superior? And is it always worth it to do so? First, weigh the risk of pushback or a negative reaction from a boss against the risk of not speaking up. If you do decide to voice your opinion, there are some best practices to keep in mind. State your opinions as facts, avoiding using judgment words. In addition, ask permission to dissent instead of offering an unsolicited opinion. Keep in mind that the final decision is still in the hands of your boss, but being honest and respectful will show them that they have more options. Sanofi’s CEO on How Company Culture Can Thrive in a Distributed, Hybrid World 11 Nov 2021 --- Paul Hudson, head of one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, says leaders need to sit back and listen more often. HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with the Sanofi CEO to talk about how to drive a strong corporate culture in a dispersed, hybrid era; what the office of the future might look like, and companies' duty to help employees achieve their best selves. Talented employees, he says, “expect to tell you exactly what they think on any given day", and that's great. This interview is the third in a new video series called “The New World of Work,” which will explore how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Sun, 13 Sep 2026 - 863 - Harvard's Arthur C. Brooks on the Secrets to Joy in Your Career
Harvard’s Arthur C. Brooks on the Secrets to Happiness at Work 12 Sep 2023 --- To the strivers and workaholics out there, bestselling author and Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks has a message for you: change your behavior before it’s too late. Brooks was one of you: a pace-setting boss who expected others to work 80-hour weeks just like him, leaving little time for friends and family. He says he was addicted not to work, but to success. And he missed watching his kids grow up. Today he classifies behavior like his as a pathology that can lead to misery. And he has concrete, actionable advice for increasing your life’s happiness. In fact, he writes about it in a regular column for The Atlantic. For this episode of our video series “The New World of Work”, HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with Brooks, co-author (with Oprah Winfrey) of "Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier", to discuss: · What’s caused the severe dip in general happiness in the last few years? · The two traits of those who find true happiness in their work · The difference between “deal friends” and “real friends”. The real kind are “beautifully useless” and you need them more than deal friends Happiness is contagious, Brooks says, and just being in a happy person’s vicinity can make you happier. “But,” he says, “even more contagious is misery.” This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. Your Career Path Doesn't Have to Be a Straight Line 2 May 2022 --- You may think of your career as a ladder–you can go up, or down–but a better analogy might be a rock climbing wall, where going sideways, or even backwards, can be how you find your unique route to the top. Social Media Has Made Us Narcissists — But There Is a Cure 23 Apr 2023 --- Here's a quick self-assessment to find out whether your ego is detached from real achievement. 00:00 Here are some questions typically used in research to evaluate non-clinical narcissism. 01:31 What is narcissism? 02:00 Why does it seem like there are so many narcissists today? 02:50 Is this why it seems like everyone wants to be famous? 03:45 We’ve seen the “Kardashian-ization” of success. 04:53 What can I do to counter the effects of digital narcissism? 05:55 It’s hard to get better at anything if you believe your own self-hype. Business psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic says there’s been an alarming rise in the percentage of young adults who expect to become famous, and they’re mostly headed for disappointment. Luckily, there is a fairly straightforward way to battle narcissism. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic is the Chief Innovation Officer at ManpowerGroup, a professor of business psychology at University College London and at Columbia University, co-founder of deepersignals.com, and an associate at Harvard’s Entrepreneurial Finance Lab. What to Do If You're Undervalued at Work | Christine vs Work 10 Nov 2023 --- You work hard, you do your job well, but no one seems to notice or give you credit. Here’s what to do. Whether you’re looking for a raise, better feedback from your manager, or greater visibility within your company, what can you do to be recognized? It can feel especially challenging if you’re more junior than your colleagues, your ideas are routinely dismissed or mistakenly credited to others, or your direct contributions aren’t easy to show off. Despite your best efforts, what can you do to get the recognition you deserve? I sought answers from Andréa Long—head of Talent Engagement at Upstart, serial entrepreneur, consultant, and workshop facilitator. If you’re feeling undervalued at work, Andréa suggests clarifying how you’d like your contributions to be recognized, having ongoing constructive conversations with your manager, applying tactics to gain visibility and credibility, and being honest when you’ve exhausted your options and it’s time to move on to another job opportunity. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 848 - Why the World's "Scariest Economist" Believes We're at a Tipping Point
Why the World’s “Scariest Economist” Thinks We’re at a Tipping Point 16 Dec 2020 --- Mariana Mazzucato, who has been called “one of the three most important thinkers about innovation.” is urging all of us to seize the moment and remake a more fair, just, and equitable world for all. At this tipping point for our economy, we talk with Mazzucato about what the path to recovery could and should look like. --------------------------------------------------------------------- At Harvard Business Review, we believe in management. So we try to arm our readers with ideas that help them become smarter, more creative, and more courageous in their work. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 847 - The Case Against Letting Employees Pick WFH Days
The Case Against Letting Employees Pick WFH Days 13 Sep 2021 --- While some managers may be inclined to let employees choose their own schedule, Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom strongly recommends against this for two very important reasons. 00:00 I used to say, "Let employees pick their WFH days." Not any more. 00:33 The first problem: “Mixed mode” leads to anxiety and exclusion 01:21 Problem two: Disparities create long-term diversity problems 02:35 That leaves us with two options: team-based or centralized choice 02:52 Pros and cons of team-based choice 03:48 Employees must WFH on WFH days to avoid “the great unraveling” 04:09 Yes, my original article on this topic made lots of people upset! 04:50 Let’s do the reverse of “move fast and break things” First is the challenge in managing a hybrid team, which can generate an office in-group and a home out-group. The second concern is the risk to diversity. Current surveys show that younger women with children at home are most likely to want to work from home permanently. Previous research found that WFH employees had a 50% lower rate of promotion after 21 months compared to their office colleagues. The best solution is for managers to decide which days their team should WFH and which days everyone should be in the office. Read more: https://hbr.org/2021/05/dont-let-employees-pick-their-wfh-days Bloom and his research partners spoke to hundreds of managers across different industries, from tiny companies to massive multinationals like Google, Citi, and HSBC. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 846 - How to Stop Promoting Mediocre Men (Quick Study)
How to Stop Promoting Incompetent Men (Quick Study) 12 Mar 2020 --- Are there fewer women in management because we can’t discern between confidence and competence? The popular explanations range from women just aren’t capable of being leaders to women just don’t want to be leaders. According to author Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic however, the absence of women in leadership roles has less to do with women themselves and more to do with how we interpret leadership traits. Confidence – a trait more associated with men – is often misinterpreted as competence. As a result, charismatic, but incompetent men have fewer barriers to reach the top than women. Individuals in positions to promote and hire managers should think more critically about what seems like a leadership trait versus what is an actual leadership trait. They will find that arrogance and overconfidence – the characteristics that get men into management positions – are also the characteristics that cause poor performance. --------------------------------------------------------------------- At Harvard Business Review, we believe in management. If the world’s organizations and institutions were run more effectively, if our leaders made better decisions, if people worked more productively, we believe that all of us — employees, bosses, customers, our families, and the people our businesses affect — would be better off. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 840 - The Explainer: Understanding Blockchain's Reality
The Explainer: The Truth About Blockchain 11 Jun 2019 --- Blockchain’s impact will be enormous, but it will take decades for it to seep into our economic and social infrastructure. True blockchain-led transformation of business and government is still many years away. That’s because blockchain is not a “disruptive” technology, which can attack a traditional business model with a lower-cost solution and overtake incumbent firms quickly. Blockchain is a foundational technology: It has the potential to create new foundations for our economic and social systems. But while the impact will be enormous, it will take decades for blockchain to seep into our economic and social infrastructure. The process of adoption will be gradual and steady, not sudden, as waves of technological and institutional change gain momentum. --------------------------------------------------------------------- At Harvard Business Review, we believe in management. Brands Must Learn to Navigate the Echoverse 2 Aug 2024 --- The internet and AI tools are transforming marketing communications within a complex, interactive landscape called the echoverse. While marketing has evolved since the proliferation of the internet, in the echoverse, a diverse network of human and nonhuman actors — consumers, brands, AI agents, and more — continuously interact, influence, and reshape messages across digital platforms. Traditional one-way and two-way communication models have given way to omnidirectional communication. The Explainer: Solving Problems by Starting with the Worst Idea Possible 11 Jun 2019 --- Sometimes wrong thinking can lead to the right answer. There are many creative tools a designer uses to think differently, but none is more counter-intuitive than “wrong thinking,” also called reverse thinking. Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 820 - When Your Partner Isn’t Giving You the Support You Need | Women at Work | Podcast
Before you got engaged, or had a child, or moved across the country for your partner’s job, did you sit down and ask each other questions like, What makes for a good life? and How much work is too much? Yeah, neither did we. These are the sorts of conversations that researcher Jennifer Petriglieri says lay the foundation for couples, especially working parents, to have a mutually supportive relationship and satisfying, if demanding, careers.A woman named Rebecca remembers talking with her husband in depth about their values and goals early on in their relationship. It was a conversation that felt abstract at the time…and never happened again. They now have two young kids, and Rebecca is stepping into a new leadership role. She feels like she’s not getting enough practical and emotional support from her spouse, and isn’t sure how to attain it. So, we asked Jennifer to share her expertise and advice. We give Rebecca (and anyone in a similar situation) a framework for processing the career-family tension she’s feeling, as well as ideas for resolving it.Guest:Jennifer Petriglieri is an associate professor of organizational behavior at INSEAD and the author of Couples That Work: How Dual-Career Couples Can Thrive in Love and Work.Resources:• “How Dual-Career Couples Make It Work,” by Jennifer Petriglieri• “Why Working Couples Need to Talk More About Power,” by Jennifer Petriglieri• “Couples That Work,” by Women at Work• “When We Make All (or Most of) the Money,” by Women at Work• “How to Have a Relationship and a Career,” by HBR IdeaCastSign up for the Women at Work newsletter.Email us: womenatwork@hbr.orgListen to all Women at Work episodes here: [YouTube playlist link]You can also listen to this episode on HBR.org, and wherever you listen to podcasts: - HBR.org (transcript available here): https://hbr.org/podcast/2022/11/when-your-partner-isnt-giving-you-the-support-you-need - Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/when-your-partner-isnt-giving-you-the-support-you-need/id1336174427?i=1000585385616 - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1RjP4YqhnPWeH932LvEFvp?si=151ba63e06e4432d - Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/women-at-work/episode/when-your-partner-isnt-giving-you-the-support-you-need-208311946 - Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLmhhcnZhcmRidXNpbmVzcy5vcmcvaGFydmFyZGJ1c2luZXNzL3dvbWVuLWF0LXdvcms/episode/dGFnOmF1ZGlvLmhici5vcmcsMjAxOC0wMS0xNzp3b21lbi1hdC13b3JrLnM4LjAwMDA0?sa=X&ved=0CAgQuIEEahcKEwjA2L63np_7AhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAQ Series Description: Women face gender discrimination throughout our careers. Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 819 - The Ups and Downs of Being a First-Time Manager | Women at Work | Podcast
Learning to lead other people is a stressful stretch assignment. Much of that stress stems from the misconceptions many people bring into the job. They think they know what the role will entail, and then they start doing the work and realize they don’t know what they’ve gotten themselves into. Gender bias often makes the transition more painful for women since a lot of people, unfortunately, still don’t see us as cut out for leadership, even if they’d never say so to our face.Three women who’ve recently moved into management speak candidly about being newly in charge of other people: the surprises, the rewards, and recent challenges. If you’re a new manager yourself, we hope you’ll find comfort in knowing that you’re not alone in any struggles you might be facing— and that you’ll get some ideas for how to deal. And if you’re just curious about becoming a boss, we hope that you’ll come away more prepared for the job and confident that you can do it too.Chapters:00:00 – Intro05:12 – How Did You Become a Manager?09:06 – Challenges as a New Manager15:09 – Getting Feedback from Direct Reports20:00 – Managerial Mindsets/The Double Bind24:36 – How to Handle Performance Reviews29:14 – When to (Not) Take Your Predecessor’s Advice32:55 – Measuring Your Success as a People Manager39:45 – OutroResources:- “Becoming the Boss,” by Linda A. Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 816 - How to Push for Policy Changes at Your Company | Women at Work | Podcast
When you have an idea for a change that would make your workplace better for women, where do you begin? How can you push for a childcare stipend, a company-wide pay audit, a more comprehensive health care plan, or an ombuds office? If you instigate the change, do you have to be the face of it? What are the other roles you can play? Two experts in systemic, organizational change explain the behind-the-scenes strategizing, relationship building, and risk management that should happen before approaching the people in charge, who will then need to support, fund, and build out the proposal. And because sustaining a grassroots initiative requires motivating a bunch of volunteers, they also share tried-and-true ways to keep everyone invested in the cause, aligned, and on track.Guests: Lily Zheng is a diversity, equity, and inclusion strategist and executive coach. Sun, 20 Sep 2026 - 806 - How to Conquer Nonstop Notifications at Work | Christine vs Work
Beep! Bzzzt. That incessant knockbrush! Work message notifications run nonstop all day, every day, and there doesn’t seem to be signs of stopping. It’s exhausting. In today’s global, remote, WiFi-powered workspaces, the majority of async communication is conducted through email, direct message, or system notifications. Responding to this bottomless stream of requests can be time-consuming, not to mention stressful and mentally taxing. I needed some advice. How do I avoid getting burned out by work messages? What are some things I can do to set boundaries? And how do I create a healthier relationship with my inbox? Fri, 18 Sep 2026 - 801 - The Explainer: Balancing Delivery and Adaptation
The Explainer: Balancing Execution and Adaptation 18 Jun 2019 --- Most organizations only focus on execution or adaptation. But both are important for success. Research shows that most leaders and organizations tend to focus on just one type of performance. But there are two types that are important for success. The first type is known as tactical performance. Tactical performance is how effectively your organization sticks to its strategy. It is the driver of focus and consistency. It allows organizations to increase strength by directing limited resources to the fewest targets. The second type, known as adaptive performance, is how effectively your organization diverges from its strategy. Adaptive performance manifests as creativity, problem solving, grit, innovation, and citizenship. It allows organizations to create value in a world filled with, as the U.S. military says, volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, where technology and strategy changes rapidly. Organizations need to focus on both tactical and adaptive performance to succeed. So we try to arm our readers with ideas that help them become smarter, more creative, and more courageous in their work. We enlist the foremost experts in a wide range of topics, including career planning, strategy, leadership, work-life balance, negotiations, innovation, and managing teams. Harvard Business Review empowers professionals around the world to lead themselves and their organizations more effectively and to make a positive impact.
