- 239 - 4 Curses on the Romanov Dynasty of Russia
The Romanov Imperial House ruled Russia with an iron fist for 300 years. In that time they made plenty of enemies. From a grief-stricken mother who foretold the demise of the dynasty, to a scorned Tsaritsa who cursed St. Petersburg to calamity. From a hermit monk who claimed to know the hour of Catherine the Great’s death, to another monk, Rasputin, who cursed Tsar Nikolai’s family for causing his death. All culminating in the tragic slaying of the Imperial family, which fulfilled not one but two famous curses. Let’s take a spooky stroll through 3 centuries of Russia’s dark history and explore 4 curses and ominous prophecies laid on the Romanov dynasty. 1. “You began with the death of a Tsarevich, you will end with the death of a Tsarevich!” Ivan the Terrible, False Dmitry, Marina Mniszech, Michael Romanov 2. “St. Petersburg shall be empty!” Peter the Great, Eudoxia Lopukhina, Empress Catherine I 3. “Empress Catherine will die in 10 months and 10 days!” Catherine the Great, Monk Abel, Emperor Peter III, Emperor Paul I 4. Rasputin’s Curse "The Russian people will kill them!" Emperor Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodrovna, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, Alexei Music: From Russia With Love by Huma-Huma Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 236 - Potential British Monarchs REJECTED for George I
In 1700 the Stuart Dynasty was out of heirs, save one, Princess Anne. Parliament studied the royal family tree to determine who was next in line. The problem was they were all catholic. The succession skipped over 41 closer relations until they got to the nearest living Protestant, Sophia, Electress of Hanover. The Act of Settlement of 1701 declared that all future British monarchs must be her descendant. She ended up dying before Anne and the throne went to her son, George I. But who were the 41 royals skipped over? French Princes, Italian Kings, A Queen of Spain and a couple of Holy Roman Empresses, let’s meet the fascinating potential British Monarchs that never where. This succession uses the rules of male-preference primogeneture, the law of the land at the time. And only looks at dynasts who were alive in the year 1701. Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 235 - Anne, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland
Queen Anne was the younger sister of Mary II, half of England’s only joint monarchy, William and Mary. When they died, Anne had no interest in sharing the throne with her husband. She was the first married Queen of England to rule on her own. Anne was a strong political player and oversaw the creation of the new nation of Great Britain. She had a long term, possibly romantic relationship with Sarah Churchill, but when political differences tore them apart, she transferred her affections to another lady in waiting, Abigail Marsham. Anne had 17 pregnancies, but none of her children survived childhood. Her death meant the end of the Stuart Dynasty and the throne went to her German cousin, George I. Let's examine the life of Queen Anne. Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 233 - Mary II, Queen of England, Scotland, & Ireland
Queen Mary II was 1/2 of England’s only joint monarchy, and half of a pair of powerful sister Queens. She betrayed her father and took his throne with the support of her Dutch husband, William of Orange. She preferred to take a back seat but ended up doing most of the governing while William was away at war. There is evidence that both she and her sister Anne had romantic relationships with women. Mary’s life was marred by reproductive tragedy and cut short by smallpox. Let's examine the life of Queen Mary II. Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 232 - Royals who Died of Bubonic Plague
As the great pestilence burned across central Asia, north Africa and Europe, roughly 100 million people lost their lives in the worst pandemic in human history. More than half of the populations of Florence, Paris and London fell victim. We will never know the names of most of the poor souls who met their end in mass graves. But perhaps the best way to put a human face on this apocalyptic event is to explore the lives of those victims for whom we do have carefully kept records - the Royals. Today let’s meet 21 Kings, Queens and Princes who where cut out of history by the scythe of the black death, and the many outbreaks of plague that followed. And see how their sudden deaths changed the course of history. Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 231 - A History of Bubonic Plague | The Black Death & Quarantining with The Decameron
“How many valiant men, how many fair ladies, how many sprightly youths, … breakfasted in the morning with their kinsfolk, comrades and friends, and that same night supped with their ancestors in the other world.” Giovanni Boccaccio, The Decameron Between 1346 and 1353 a horrifying pestilence burned across Central Asia, North Africa and Europe. The infected, covered in bubos and burning with fever, died in agony, with no family left to care for them or priest to pray for their souls. In some areas 50% of the population was wiped out, leaving whole villages deserted with no one to bury the dead. Those who were lucky enough to be healthy, and have the means to do so, escaped disease riddled cities for the fresh, miasma-free air of the countryside. In the midst of this horror, Florentine Giovanni Boccaccio, wrote his seminal work, The Decameron, about 10 young people who flee the plague for a lavish, sexy Tuscan Villa vacation and to hopefully not die. This medieval masterpiece has recently been turned into a darkly hilarious Netflix series, which further explores the class and gender dynamics of the 14th century in a way that anyone who recently lived through a world-wide pandemic can relate to. Today lets explore the history and science behind the Black death; the plague pandemics that came before and after it, and find out if this horrendous disease is still a risk today. Plus we’ll find out what the Decameron has to say about life, love, sex, and surviving the plague in 1348 and today. Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 229 - Anne Boleyn's Sister & Brother
Anne Boleyn is one of the most famous women in history. Her meteoric rise from minor noble to Queen of England, and even swifter downfall to the block in the tower of London is the stuff of legend and the focus of too many novels and dramas to count. But there are two important characters in Anne’s story who don’t get as much attention. Her older sister Mary was King Henry’s mistress first, and bore him two children. And her younger brother George also had an impressive rise at court, which was cut short when he was accused of incest with Anne and lost his head 2 days before her. I’m at Hever Castle just south of London where the Boleyn siblings lived for much of their childhood. Let’s explore the castle and get to know more about the Queen Anne’s childhood, and the lives of her fascinating and tragic sister and brother, Mary Boleyn and George Boleyn. Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 228 - Royal DNA Test - What is the Genetic Heritage of the Monarchs of Europe? 2/2
What’s more British than the British royal family? More Spanish than the Spanish Monarchs? More Norse than the King of Norway? Well, a lot of things actually. In fact, nearly all of the 10 remaining hereditary monarchs of Europe have more German DNA than they do local. For centuries, royals almost exclusively married other, foreign royals. They rarely mixed their blue blood with people native to the Kingdoms they ruled over. What’s more, when dynasties died out (often from excessive inbreeding) foreign royal houses put their own seconds sons on the throne, establishing new, entirely alien dynasties. Modern royal families try to brand themselves as throughly native and in touch with the common people. And if they ever spit into a test tube and sent it off for a DNA test, they would probably never publish the results. But, by looking back at their family trees, we can get a pretty good idea of their heritage. Last week we explore the heritage of the reigning families of Belgium, Denmark Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco and Norway. Today we’ll analyze the DNA of the Dutch, Spanish, Swedish and British royal families. Plus we’ll compare them all to see which modern monarchy has the most local DNA; and find out why the royals of Europe are all so German. Royal family of The Netherlands - Dutch royal family Royal family of Spain - Spanish Royal family Royal family of Sweden - Swedish royal family Royal family of The United Kingdom - British Royal family Why are the royals so German? Which royal families are the most German? Which royal families are the most local? Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 226 - Börte, Genghis Khan’s Beloved Empress
Genghis Khan is famous for launching the conquest of the largest contiguous empire the world has ever seen. And for fathering enough children that today nearly every person of Asian decent carries his DNA. But he might not have done any of it if not for the love he bore one incredible woman, his Empress, Borte. The couple started their story as a great romance. As it evolved into a saga of war, conquest, and politics, Borte was by her husband’s side, ruling in his stead and influencing trade and diplomacy across the Empire. She doesn’t even seem to have minded his many other, lesser wives, who we will also meet today. Let’s get to know the great Mongol Empress, Borte. Tue, 28 Jul 2026 - 225 - 10 Historic Royal Thrones from Around the World
If you want to be a monarch, you need three things: ultimate power over your domain, a brilliant gold crown to impress the peasantry, and the best seat in the palace. The idea of giving the most important person in a given space a special place to sit is near-universal. Many ancient civilizations placed their rulers, priests and gods on thrones. They became so synonymous with royalty that “the throne” is a byword for monarchy itself. Let’s take a closer look at 10 fabulous royal thrones from history. I’ve selected this list based on their fame, historic importance, beauty, and their fascinating stories. They span the globe and history. So find a comfortable seat, as we examine where ancient and modern monarchs rested their behinds. 1. Throne of Knossos, 1400s BCE 2. Golden Throne of Tutankhamun, 1323 BCE 3. Throne of Charlemagne, 790s 4. Chair of Saint Peter, 875 5. St. Edward’s Chair, 1296 6. Throne of Montezuma, 1507 7. Peacock Throne of the Mugal Empire, 1635 8. Coronation Chair of Denmark, 1662 9. Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 218 - Asexual Royals from History
Throughout history, across cultures and in every walk of life, there have always been people with varied sexual attractions, or lack there of. Asexuality, in particular, has only been identified and studied since the early 20th century. People in the past did not have the concepts, terminology or relative freedom we have today. So those who might now identify as asexual had a limited understanding of what they were experiencing. This makes it difficult for historians to identify people from the past who may have been asexual. Sexual attractions and relationships of every variety often left evidence, like steamy love letters and reports from others. But a lack of sexual desire was much less likely to be expressed. Sexuality, particularly among royals and especially among women, was often not a matter of choice. Princes and Princesses had to marry and reproduce with whoever their parents told them to. In many cases, particularly when young princesses were wed to much older kings, their own desires were invalid. So unless they risked their lives by having an affair, we can’t know if they were secretly lusting after the stable boy, the kitchen maid, or if they just wanted to be left alone to enjoy a slice of cake. As with all of my LGBTQIA+ videos, I am sensitive about outing people posthumously. These people are no longer able to tell us their own stories, and we must therefore rely on journals, letters and reports from others, which can’t give us a complete picture. But despite the gaps in our knowledge, these people deserve to have their stories told. I think it is incredibly important for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to see themselves represented in history and to know that they are not alone in the world or in time. And I have had many requests to do a video about ace royals from the past. So today let’s meet 6 royals from history who’s experiences and actions indicate that they may have been asexual. Tue, 02 Jun 2026 - 217 - Commoner Queens of England
The United Kingdom has a new Queen Consort, Camilla. She is the first Queen of England to have been born a commoner since Catherine Parr (1547). Since the Norman conquest in 1066, English and British Royals have almost exclusively married other royals, usually as part of treaties with powerful neighboring nations. Of the 42 royal consorts, 13 have been French, 8 German, 5 Spanish, 4 Danish, 1 Dutch, 1 Italian, 1 Portuguese and 1 Scottish. But on a few, rare occasions an English monarch put his heart (or his lust) before his head and chose instead to make an English woman his Queen. There have been 9 English Queens of England, one was a member of a rival branch of the English royal family. 2 were from noble families and 6 were commoners... Tue, 05 May 2026 - 213 - Charlemagne’s Many Wives & Concubines
Charlemagne is a central figure in European history. In the 700s he conquered a vast empire. He is considered the progenitor of the French monarchy, several Germany dynasties and more. He even forced the Pope to crown him Holy Roman Emperor. But while Charlemagne was busy converting pagans to Christianity at sword point, his love life was far from holy. The great emperor had 4 or 5 wives, the relationship statues of one has long been debated for a very cruel reason. And at least 4 concubines. Many of his romantic entanglements were going on simultaneously. And the influence these women had on imperial politics shocked clerics of the day. In total, they presented the king with 18 children. And so many heirs planted the seeds for the destruction of the Carolingian Empire. Today let’s meet Emperor Charlemagne’s many wives and concubines. Tue, 28 Apr 2026 - 212 - The Windsor Beauties - 10 Women of the Restoration Court
I'm at Hampton Court Palace in the Communication Gallery to look at a very special collection of paintings, the Windsor Beauties. These portraits immortalize 10 woman said to be the most stunning members of the restoration court. They exude elegance, confidence, and more than a hint of seduction. It was long whispered that famous philanderer, King Charles II used the paintings like a catalog, to choose which lovely lady would be his bedfellow for the evening. His lascivious majesty would then place his order with the Keeper of his Privy Closet, known as his ‘Pimp-master General’ who would then call for the patiently waiting lucky lady. The Windsor beauties gained such a notorious reputation that by 1835, the now prudish royal court despised them. The collection was consigned to Hampton court Palace, which was no longer a royal residence. But were the Windsor beauties really just restoration Pinups, or is there more to the story? Let’s meet the real women rendered in colorful goop, and find out why they were chosen. We’ll discover who was and was not a royal mistress, and which beauties were sleeping with each others husbands. We’ll learn how they traded beauty for power and wealth, and find out if they were really as attractive as their famous portraits. Let’s get to know the Windsor Beauties: Elizabeth Hamilton, Comtesse de Gramont Mary Bagot, Countess of Falmouth & Dorset Elizabeth Wriothesley, Countess of Northumberland Anne Digby, Countess of Sunderland Jane Needham, Mrs. Myddelton Margaret Brooke, Lady Denham Frances Brooke, Lady Whitmore Henrietta Boyle, Countess of Rochester Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox Anne Hyde, Duchess of York & Albany Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 21 Apr 2026 - 211 - Historic Royals with Tattoos
Tattoos have a long and colorful history across the world, and are an important part of many cultures. While 1 in 3 Americans have at least 1 tattoo today, western culture still sees the art form as counter culture, risque and rebellious. You might be shocked if you learned that your grandma was inked. And you certainly wouldn’t expect that prim and proper royals of the Victorian era were concealing covert tattoos under their stiff dress uniforms and frilly gowns. But in fact, a handful of trend setting Princes in the late 19th century started an aristocratic craze for secret ink. Let’s take a journey through the history of tattoo, learn how it flourished on other continents, but passed Europe by, and was then enthusiastically reintroduced. Along the way, we’ll meet several royals from history who were secretly tatted up! Tue, 24 Mar 2026 - 207 - Guinness Family - Ireland's Dark Beer Dynasty
When the Guinness family saw the turmoil and scandals of other great historic dynasties, they literally said, hold our beer, and proceeded to top them all. The new series, The House of Guinness dramatizes just one generation of the famous Irish family; the 4 children of Benjamin Guinness, who took over the brewing business in 1868. And while we'll cover what was fact and fiction, there is so much juicy gossip on with the rest of the family tree. Including some rather creative cases of looking for dates at the family reunion. From how they turned cold Irish porter into cold hard cash in the 1760s, to the 1960s drug impresario whose tragic death inspired the Beatles song "A day in the life" to rumors of a family curse. The clan has a history as dark as their famous stout. So order up a pint of plain, and let's get to know the Guinness family. Tue, 10 Mar 2026 - 205 - Which Nations have had the most Queens Regnant?
Through most of history, male monarchs have been the norm. Their wives held the title of Queen or Empress, but were merely consorts, with little real power. Many monarchies, like France, The Ottoman Empire and Bhutan have strictly barred women from inheriting the throne and have never had a Queen Regnant, or a Queen in her own right. While others have rules loose enough that a handful of women have had the opportunity to claim the throne and become the highest authority in the land. Some achieved this by outliving their brothers, or not having any, some by seizing power from their husbands or male relatives, and a few actually married their own brothers in order to claim the throne. One nation on our list actually had a matrilineal monarchy for 300 years. Let’s take a look at the top 7 nations who have been ruled by 10 or more Queens Regnant: 7. Tue, 03 Mar 2026 - 204 - Elizabeth I vs. Catherine de Medici: Great Rivalries in History
For most of history, men ruled the world. But for 3 decades in the late 1500s two powerful women dominated Europe. Catherine de Medici was Queen of France and Elizabeth I was Queen of England. Neither one was expected to be Queen. But both bid their time until they could seize power. They were brilliant, dynamic, determined, and sometimes ruthless leaders. But even with all they had in common, their differences made them fierce opponents. Catherine was a catholic, a wife and a mother, while Elizabeth was protestant and single by choice. Dozens of books and dramas have focused on the epic rivalry between Elizabeth and her northern neighbor, Mary Queen of Scots. And while she is an important part of the story, Elizabeth’s relationship with her greater nemesis, Catherine has long been forgotten. However, season 2 of the Starz series Serpent Queen, and the recent book Blood, Fire & Gold by Estelle Paranque have resurrected the historic frienemies. So let’s examine the parallel lives and epic rivalry between Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 17 Feb 2026 - 202 - Royal Couples who were really in LOVE ❤️
Through most of history, royals were stuck in unhappy, arranged marriages. But, sometimes, after getting through the awkward wedding night, royal brides and grooms found they had a lot in common and formed intimate, passionate, life-long connections. Some kings even ignored the court ladies clamoring to be their mistresses, and had eyes only for their Queen. From a medieval Queen who rode into war at her husband’s side, to a renaissance emperor who trusted his wife to rule. From a Queen who risked death to continue sleeping with her husband, to a Princess who was betrothed to the heir, but ended up happy with the spare. While these monarchs might have been romantic heroes in the bedchamber, they were far from flawless. Some were cruel and violent towards their enemies and even their own people. But they prove that happily ever afters really can come true! At least until a lack of medical knowledge came in to turn their Julia Quinn bodice rippers into Nicholas Sparks tragedies. Let’s meet 4 royal couples, who were brought together by arranged marriages but ended up falling in love! 1. King Edward I of England & Eleanor of Castile 2. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V & Isabella of Portugal 3. Queen Maria II of Portugal & Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha 4. Tue, 06 Jan 2026 - 196 - A History of Time: Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks, Months & Years
Time, it marches on relentlessly outside of human control. But humanity has long found a variety of ways to mark our passage through the eons. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. But why do we count our collective journey through the ages in these integers? A day makes sense, that’s one rotation of the earth on its axis and can easily be marked by the rising and setting of the sun. And a year is one orbit of the earth around the sun, traveling through the 4 seasons again and again. But why 60 seconds in a minute, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year? Let’s look back through history to learn the varied origins of these odd measures of time. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! In Germany, Christmas really glitters! In fact many of the traditions we associate with the festive season in Britain, the US and around the world come to us via Germany. The Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, Advent Calendars, nutcrackers, toys, Christmas Markets and a cornucopia of Christmas confections had roots in Deutschland. Much of this cultural exchange comes from the tight familial bonds between the British and German royal families. So curl up by the Tannenbaum with a plate of Weihnachtsplätzchen (Christmas cookies), and a mug of Glühwein or Kinderpunsch (mulled wine with or without the alcohol). And together let’s explore the history of German Christmas traditions and visit the royal neues palais on December 24th, 1907 for a spectacularly festive meal with Kaiser Wilhelm and his family. Tue, 23 Dec 2025 - 194 - Jane Austen: The Witty Regency Romance Writer the World Can’t Get Enough Of
Jane Austen was born in the 16th of December, 1775, which means this month marks her 250th birthday. Jane lived a quiet, mostly happy life in the English countryside, surrounded by the balls, romantic intrigues and family dramas that fill her novels. Her writing was always her true passion. She glimpsed success, with 4 books becoming wildly popular in her lifetime. But she died tragically young, depriving the world of her talent. Her stories have been adapted and re imagined countless times. And in this, Jane’s 250th year, she continues to be a mainstay in pop culture. But let’s look past the endearing characters and timeless stories, and met the woman holding the quill. Let’s get to know Jane Austen... Sense and Sensibility (1811) Pride and Prejudice (1813) Mansfield Park (1814) Emma (1816) Northanger Abbey (1818, posthumous) Persuasion (1818, posthumous) Lady Susan (1871, posthumous) Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 16 Dec 2025 - 193 - Disney Princesses vs. Real History 2/2
Each Disney Princess movie is set in a different time and part of the world. For many they are a first glimpse of history and cultures outside of our own. But have you ever wondered what life was really like for your favorite Disney Princess? Let’s take a look at each of Disney’s 16 animated Princesses, including the latest addition, Asha, to determine where and when they are most likely set. Then I’ll match each iconic princess to a real-life royal woman from the same time and place. So we can get a sense of what life without witches, curses and singing animal sidekicks was really like. In some cases there are interesting similarities; Eugénie de Montijo really did go from rags to riches like Cinderella, Catherine of Valois was a sleeping beauty like Aurora and Mihrimah Sultan was a respected leader like Jasmine. So put on your ballgown and tiara, or strap on your armor and let’s compare Disney Princesses to real history! Part 1: Snow White - Maria Anna of Bavaria, Archduchess of Austria Cinderella - Eugénie de Montijo, Empress of the French Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) - Catherine of Valois, Queen of England Ariel (The Little Mermaid) - Louise of Hesse-Kassel, Queen of Denmark Belle (Beauty and the Beast) - Maria Josepha of Saxony, Dauphine of France Jasmine (Aladdin) - Mihrimah Sultan, Ottoman Princess Pocahontas - The historic Pocahontas Mulan - Xiao, Empress of the Sui dynasty Part 2: Tiana (The Princess and the Frog) - Ariana Austin Makonnen, Princess of Ethiopia Rapunzel (Tangled) - Louise of Prussia, Princess of the Netherlands Merida (Brave) - Matilda of Scotland, Queen of England Elsa & Anna (Frozen) - Princess Eugénie of Sweden & Norway Moana - Nafanua, Ali’i of Samoa Raya and the Last Dragon - Trưng Sisters of Vietnam Asha (Wish) - Fatima bint al-Ahmar, Princess of the Emirate of Granada Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 28 Oct 2025 - 186 - Ghosts vs. Real History - What each series says about its country’s History
Please consider supporting me at https://www.patreon.com/LindsayHoliday The eerily beloved British comedy Ghosts was first adapted into an American supernatural sit com. It has now appairated into 3 more adaptations in Germany, France and Australia. In each version, half of a modern, living couple inherit a historic mansion. After moving in, the woman has a brush with death, which allows her to see dead people. The spirits, thrilled that a living person can interact with them, quickly incorporate her into the various rivalries, romances and hijinks which have been simmering over centuries of co-haunting. High-spirited hilarity ensues. The element which makes this show particularly special for history lovers is that each ghost met their demise in a different era. And people from the past are brought to life, or rather after-life in a unique and humanizing way. Some of the characters are archetypes of classic ghost stories, like the gray lady and headless specter. But all typify important cultural touchstones from the history of each country they are set in. Where the phantoms converge and differ across versions says a lot about how each country views its own history. Let’s take a look at the spectral ensemble from each series, and compare them to each other, and to real history. Tue, 23 Sep 2025 - 181 - The Rothschilds: Europe’s Jewish Banking Dynasty
“As rich as a Rothschild” was a common saying in the gilded age. Their rags to riches story reads like many other great modern financial dynasties; a brilliant founder who forged a fortune and future generations who squandered it on eccentricities. But the Rothschilds have a few interesting twists; The Patriarch’s five sons were sent across Europe to establish their own banking dynasties. They explicitly excluded their sisters and daughters from the business, and inbred extensively to keep their wealth intact. And the Rothschilds were uniquely vilified because they were Jewish. They were targeted by the Nazis and saw much of their art, palaces and cash stolen. And they continue to inspire conspiracy theories which claim they secretly control the world. Let’s uncover the true story of the Rothschilds. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 16 Sep 2025 - 180 - Who will be the World's Next Queen Regnant?
In 2013, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down and handed the throne to her son, Willem Alexander. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died at the age of 96 and her son, Charles III inherited the throne. And on January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, Frederik X. In just over 10 years, the world has gone from three accomplished, popular and long reigning Queens Regnant to zero. That’s right, there are no female monarchs anywhere in the world. The future may be female, but not in the archaic system of hereditary monarchy. However there are several female heirs waiting in succession lines to be the next great Queen regnant. Let’s take a look at which monarchies even allow women to occupy their thrones, and count down from those which will have to wait a few generations before getting a female sovereign, to those which are just one heartbeat, or abdication away from welcoming the World’s next Queen Regnant. 11. Tue, 02 Sep 2025 - 178 - Chinese Concubines who became Empresses
For thousands of years, Emperors of China had harems of dozens or even hundreds of wives. Emperors had the right to select concubines from among the teenage daughters of the nobility or the peasantry. During the Ming dynasty 5,000 beautiful woman were brought from around the country and lined up in front of the palace. They were narrowed down to just a handful who were admitted into the palace and had a chance of spending a night with the emperor. Inside the forbidden city, imperial wives had an intricate system of hierarchy. At the top was the Empress. She was usually chosen for her nobility and political connections. When the emperor died, she could claim the title Empress Dowager, and continue her influence through her son. Below her were consorts, then concubines and maids. The emperor alone had access to all of them, and they were closely guarded by eunuchs. If the Emperor favored a particular concubine for her beauty, brains, or for baring him a son, he had the right to promote her, even to the rank of Empress. Today lets met 7 imperial concubines who, through allure, sex appeal, child-birth, and or ruthlessness, managed to climb their way to power in Imperial China. Tue, 12 Aug 2025 - 175 - Royal Yacht Britannia - Queen Elizabeth II’s Floating Palace
When Queen Elizabeth II and her family went on vacation, they didn’t fly coach or take a carnival cruise. They traveled in style aboard Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia. The Queen designed the ship herself the year of her coronation. This was her favorite place to be, where she could truly unwind. I recently had the opportunity to tour this historic yacht in Edinburgh, Scotland. And to talk with the Yotties who served the Queen while she traveled the world. Let’s explore this floating time capsule, learn how it functioned, find out where the royals visited, what they ate, how they slept and relaxed. I’ll dish on the four honeymoons which took place on board, and we’ll be treated to an intimate glimpse of the British royal family at their most relaxed, while on vacation! Tue, 24 Jun 2025 - 168 - LGBTQ Rulers of the World
Sexuality and gender politics have differed from culture to culture and age to age throughout history. The concept of homosexuality as an identity only emerged in the 20th century. Prior to that gay and lesbian relationships and activities were commonplace but were thought of as something one did rather than part of one’s identity. There have been many historic figures who are noted to have preferred their own gender for romance and sex. Here are the stories of 5 rulers from ancient to modern times who are known to have had homosexual love affairs: Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC) Emperor Ai of Han (27 BC – 1 BC) Caliph Al-Hakam II (915AD-976) King Gongmin of Goryeo (1330 – 1374) Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (1861 – 1948) Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Charles II, King of England, Scotland & Ireland from 1660 to 1685 is one of the most notorious lotharios in history. Tue, 01 Apr 2025 - 156 - Disney Doppelgängers, Part 2
I have been enchanted by Disney since childhood. And as an adult, whenever I’m watching any movie or TV show, I can’t help but play “Where do I know that actor from?” Thank you, IMDB for making my adult life that little bit easier. One of my first forays into content creation, way back in 2014 was a series I made called “Disney Doppelgangers” where I compare two or more famous animated Disney characters who are voiced by or modeled after the same actor. Alice and Wendy; the Queen of Hearts & Fairy Godmother; Baloo and Little John and many more! I still love this series and often recommend it to Kids who are interested in checking out my work. So without further adieu, please enjoy this collection of my 15 short Disney Doppelganger episodes! Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 18 Mar 2025 - 154 - Grace O'Malley, Irish Pirate Queen
Gráinne Ní Mháille known as Grace O’Malley in English was raised aboard her father’s ships. Her charisma then won her the loyalty of her husband’s men. Together they traded and marauded the rouged west coast of Ireland. They feuded with other clans until the English came to take over the nation. Gráinne and her English nemesis nearly destroyed each other until she went over his head and met directly with Queen Elizabeth I to get a royal sanctioned piracy license. Tue, 11 Mar 2025 - 153 - Royal Yacht Britannia
Tue, 04 Mar 2025 - 152 - Leeds Castle: Ladies' Castle of England
Leeds Castle has been called the loveliest castle in England and it certainly lives up to the name. The elegant stone keep, towers, and crenelated battlements surrounded by a tranquil moat, beautiful gardens and lush parkland are exactly what you would picture as an idealized medieval castle. Across the centuries, it has often been strong women who have owned, enjoyed, renovated and defended Leeds castle. It was the tranquil retreat for generations of medieval Queens, the scene of a deadly stand-off between great ladies, a prison for two accused royal witches, and a luxurious playground for aristocrats and Hollywood stars. I have fond memories of coming her as a child, and I’m excited to be back. So come with me as we explore this tranquil castle and it’s scandalous history! Queen Eleanor of Castile Queen Margaret of France Queen Isabella of France Queen Anne of Bohemia Queen Joan of Navarre Queen Catherine of Valois Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester Queen Catherine of Aragon Olive, Lady Baillie Leeds Castle did not comp my stay, so this is not a paid promotion. Tue, 25 Feb 2025 - 151 - 4 Living Former Monarchs whose Thrones were Abolished
In the last episode we met 7 living former monarchs who chose to retire, hand their thrones to their children and enjoy their golden years. But not all living former monarchs chose to get off the throne, some were pushed off. In the 20th century, 28 national-level monarchies across the world were abolished. Their former sovereigns were downgraded, exiled or even executed. As the majority of these revolutions and coups happened in the first half of the century, few ex monarchs are still alive today. Their children and grandchildren carry on defunct royal dynastic lines and, if they’re lucky, enjoy what’s left of their ancestors’ glory, palaces, and fortunes. Today there are only 4 living former monarchs who lost their thrones when their monarchies were abolished. All of their reigns ended and one began in bloodshed. And one managed to return to his former Kingdom and be democratically elected Prime minister. Let’s meet them! Jamshid bin Abdullah, Former Sultan of Zanzibar Simeon II, Former Tsar of Bulgaria Gyanendra, Former King of Nepal Fuad II, Former King of Egypt and the Sudan Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 18 Feb 2025 - 150 - 7 Living Former Monarchs Who Retired
Queen Elizabeth II considered abdication to be a dirty word. She remained on the throne until her death at 96, and left her son Charles to waiting 73 years to take the job he was born to. But abdication is not so despised in other countries. In recent decades more monarchs have elected to retire and pass the throne on to the next generation. Thus allowing them to spend their golden years relaxing and enjoying their ridiculously well-funded retirement plans. Plus we’ll find out what an ex monarch does in retirement; from studying fish to living in a log cabin to getting into even more scandal than they did on the throne. Let’s meet the world’s 6 living former monarchs... Akihito, Former Emperor of Japan Albert II, Former King of Belgium Juan Carlos I, Former King of Spain Beatrix, Former Queen of the Netherlands Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Former Emir of Qatar Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Former Dragon King of Bhutan Margrethe II , Former Queen of Denmark Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 21 Jan 2025 - 146 - Louis XIV's Mistresses
Louis XIV, King of France from 1638 to 1715, ruled over the court at Versailles with the sheer magnetism of his personality. All were desperate to be in the light of the sun king. His image was paramount to maintaining his place at the center of the Universe. The 5’4” monarch wore high heels and voluminous wigs. And he made sure the world knew he was a virile man with plenty of mistresses. While at least 20 women came and went from his majesty’s bed, he was emotionally devoted to 3 women in succession; Louise de La Vallière, Madame de Montespan and finally Madame de Maintenon whom he secretly married after the death of his Queen. Let’s meet the mistresses of King Louis XIV: Catherine Bellier, Baroness de Beauvais Marie Mancini, Duchess & Princess of Paliano Louise de La Vallière, Duchess of La Vallière & Vaujours Olympia Mancini, Countess of Soissons Bonne de Pons d’Heudicourt, Marquise d’Heudicourt Catherine Charlotte de Gramont, Princess of Monaco Gabrielle de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Marquise of Thianges Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart, Marquise de Montespan Anne de Rohan-Chabot, Princess of Soubise Isabelle de Ludres, Marquess of Ludres Claude de Vin des Œillets Marie Angélique de Scorailles, Duchess of Fontanges Françoise d’Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 14 Jan 2025 - 145 - Empress Wu Zetian of China
Empress Wu Zetian rose from royal concubine to become the only female ruler in China’s 2,000 years of imperial history. Today she is seen as ruthless, tyrannical and willing to murder her own family to hold onto the throne. However this female leader has suffered from a millennium of bad propaganda. Many of the shocking and devious actions she took to claim and hold power overshadow the good she did for her people. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Tue, 07 Jan 2025 - 144 - Royalty 101: What is the Order of the Garter?
The Most Noble Order of the Garter sneaks into so many of my videos. Nearly ever significant member of the English and British royal family since the 1300s, and a number of foreign royals have been knights or ladies of the garter. And the symbols of the order can be spotted in SO. MANY. ROYAL. PORTRAITS. if you know where to look. Most recently the order made an appearance in pop culture when William, Prince of Wales and other senior royal men wore garter robes to the coronation of King Charles III. And on Monday, the 19th of June 2023, Garter day, the order met at Windsor castle, for the first time under King Charles, to induct 2 new members. So what is a chivalric order? What is the history of the Order of the garter? Why is their symbol a piece of women’s lingerie? And who are it’s member? And I’ll tell you about the orders behind the bright blue and red robes Catherine, Princess of Wales and the other female royals were wearing and the green velvet mantle sported by Princess Anne.
