Hong Kong Horror

Hong Kong Horror covers stories from across Asia. My name is Simon, and after each story, I break it all down from a Chinese cultural perspective to cover cultural beliefs and try to figure out exactly what is happening in these stories. I will be uploading once a week for free public episodes, and once a month for membership exclusive episodes!

  • 82 - The Night Shift Nurse: Horror Story

Tonight’s story comes from a young Chinese nurse working her very first night shift in a small hospital in rural Cambodia, on a floor where the building is a lot older than most of the people working in it. Her grandmother always had a rule for every hour of the day, and like most of us when we were young, she never really took any of them seriously. One stormy Thursday night, a call light comes on in a room that is supposed to be empty, and she goes to check on it by herself. After the story, I’ll break down what I think was really going on from a Chinese cultural perspective, including a few traditions that might sound familiar if you grew up with grandparents who held on to the old ways. As always, these are just my personal opinions, so I’d love to hear yours. So what do you think happened to Grace? Let me know in the comments, and if your family has a story or a rule like this, I’d really like to hear it.
