Thank you for being a Jazz Piano Skills listener. I am pleased to help you discover, learn, and play jazz piano!Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 218 - Jazz Piano with Mark Davis
Welcome to Jazz Piano Skills. It’s time to discover, learn, and play jazz piano!
Today, I welcome to Jazz Piano Skills, jazz pianist, educator, and author Mark Davis. Mark has been a mainstay on the Milwaukee jazz scene for over 35 years and has shared the stage with many internationally known performers such as Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, Slide Hampton, Frank Morgan, Jason Marsalis, Brian Lynch, Ted Nash, Jeff Hamilton, and John Clayton to name just a few and here’s what they say about Mark
"Mark Davis plays with the touch of Teddy Wilson and the lines of Bud Powell."
- Jazz legend Slide Hampton
"Mark Davis is a wonderful, swinging player with all the right stuff."
- Grammy award-winning trumpeter Brian Lynch
"Mark Davisisa true master of jazz piano tradition and one of the greatest educators of our time."
- Dan Nimmer, pianist with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
And my favorite
“And though Mark Davis looks like mild-mannered reporter with the Daily Planet, Clark Kent, he's really Superman on the piano!”
- jazz legend Charles McPherson
In addition to being an accomplished jazz pianist and performer, Mark has a passion for jazz education. He founded the Milwaukee Jazz Insitute, which promotes jazz through education while seeking to expand and diversify the local jazz audience. In doing so, Mark and his team work tirelessly to create opportunities for professional and aspiring musicians.
Mark has done work for the Hal Leonard Corporation, including transcriptions for Miles Davis: Kind of Blue for their Transcribed Score series and numerous recordings for their Real Book Play-Along series and Real Book Multi-Tracks series. He authored the Hal Leonard Jazz Piano Method Book 1, released in September 2015, and the Hal Leonard Jazz Piano Method Book 2, released in June 2019. Available in English, Dutch, French, and German, the method books have sold over 27,000 copies worldwide.
Enough already - without further delay- enjoy my interview with Mr. Mark Davis.

Thank you for being a Jazz Piano Skills listener. I am pleased to help you discover, learn, and play jazz piano!Tue, 02 Jan 2024 - 213 - Jazz Piano Skills: Past and Future
Welcome to Jazz Piano Skills. It's time to discover, learn, and play jazz piano!
Today’s podcast will be quite different from what I typically do regularly. We won’t study any specific jazz piano skill, analyze and digest a tune, or visit with a special guest. Instead, I want to devote today’s podcast episode to looking back over the past four-plus years - a historical summary of how Jazz Piano Skills got started, the various jazz piano skills taught, the teaching approach used, and why. I then want to look forward to the future of Jazz Piano Skills and share the format and approach I will use starting with the new year. I am very excited because it’s our opportunity to take a breather to look back and encapsulate what we have accomplished, AND to look forward so we can get fired up about and prepare for the next chapter of our amazing jazz piano journey!
So sit back and enjoy this podcast episode: Jazz Piano Skills: The Past and Future!
Happy New Year,
Dr. Bob Lawrence

Thank you for being a Jazz Piano Skills listener. It is my pleasure to help you discover, learn, and play jazz piano!Tue, 07 Nov 2023 - 205 - Special Guest, Paul Croteau
It's time to discover, learn, and play Jazz Piano with special guest Paul Croteau.
Paul grew up in Bloomfield, CT. His father was a passionate jazz fan with a modest but finely refined record collection, immersing him in the sounds of Dexter Gordon, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Phil Woods, Jack McDuff, and many other jazz greats. He took up the saxophone at the age of 10, then taught himself piano during high school. He studied classical saxophone with Philip Delibero, earned All-State and All-New England recognition, along with several jazz soloist awards during competitions at Berklee in Boston. He then attended the renowned music school at North Texas where he studied with Jim Riggs. Paul played lead alto in the 1988 Disneyland All-American College Band in Anaheim, and won first place in the 1989 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition in Washington DC. Upon graduation Paul traveled the world as a freelance musician for many years playing in a variety of genres from classic jazz and shows to R&B and smooth jazz.Later in life after building a family with his North Texas college sweetheart, Paul shifted his focus to composing music for television and film, forming Yo Paulie Music (YPM) in 2015 out of his home studio in San Antonio, TX. Today, Paul creates not only classic jazz and solo piano works, but genres he never imagined writing such electronic/orchestral tension music, string quartets, hip hop and trap, and pop music of all kinds. Today Paul's music has been heard on more than 75 unique television series, across 40+ networks in 30+ countries, as well as in feature films. You can find Paul's music on Spotify, iTunes and other streaming services, and he has a humble YouTube channel dedicated to teaching people about writing for tv/film.

Thank you for being a Jazz Piano Skills listener. It is my pleasure to help you discover, learn, and play jazz piano!Tue, 04 Jul 2023 - 187 - Special Guest, Anita Houser
It's time to Discover, Learn, and Play Jazz Piano!
Anita G. Houser was born and raised in Georgetown, South Carolina. At age seven, Anita’s singing ability was recognized and nurtured by her church’s Minister of Music, who often featured her as a soloist. Anita quickly discovered that she had a gift and passion for music. She started piano lessons at age eight, and taught her first piano student at age 15.
She earned 1st chair clarinet in her high school band. In chorus she competed with students throughout the state, earning placement in the South Carolina All-State Chorus and Honors Chorus, and was featured as a soloist. Anita also performed as piano accompanist for her high school chorus. She was also hired to sing and play piano for various events throughout the community.
In 1989, Anita graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music, Magna Cum Laude, with concentration in Classical Piano Performance. While in college, she traveled on tour with the glee club. The Spelman College Jazz Ensemble, with Anita as keyboardist, opened for the late great jazz pianist, Geri Allen, at the Capitol City Jazz Fest in Washington, DC.
Post college, Anita shifted from the pursuit of music to enjoy world travel. This desire was realized as a Delta Airlines flight attendant for four years. Marriage, family, and entrepreneurship as a work at home mother, became her next chapter.
Anita rekindled her love of music through taking and teaching private piano lessons. She was an integral part of the music ministry at Unity of Columbia, South Carolina, where jazz was often performed. Anita moved to Augusta, Georgia, and became Music Director of Unity of Augusta. She also established a private studio, teaching piano and voice. Anita sang and played keyboard in a local R & B band, performed jazz and R&B at private events, and provided piano accompaniment for school soloists and choruses.
In addition to her roles as wife, mother, musician, and teacher, Anita was the family caregiver during her mother’s four-year Alzheimer’s journey.
As both a desire to further develop her singing, and have an outlet from the demands of her daily life, Anita applied and was awarded a scholarship to train with Richard Fink IV, founder of Throga (throat-yoga), a patented vocal training technique for speakers and singers of all genres. Anita became Throga’s first certified instructor.
The inner tug of Anita’s love of jazz piano inspired her to take formal lessons with Donald Macey in Augusta, Georgia.
During the pandemic, Anita stumbled on the jazzpianoskills.com website. Dr. Bob’s training, resources, and support continue to be a guiding light in Anita’s jazz piano development.
She was invited to play keyboard for Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra, and piano for the Palmetto Chamber Orchestra. Anita recently sang her original song, “God Dwells Within You” with the Columbia County Orchestra. The music was arranged, for orchestra, by David Ezell, Artistic Director. David is a longtime mentor and friend to Anita.
Anita teaches piano and voice remotely. Her current project is JAM, Jazz Awakening Mind, a monthly spiritual gathering led by musicians, featuring jazz music.Tue, 27 Jun 2023 - 186 - Au Privave

Welcome to JazzPianoSkills; I'm Dr. Bob Lawrence. It’s time to Discover, Learn, and Play jazz piano!
I am thrilled to welcome back to JazzPianSkills, Dr. JB Dyas. Dr. JB Dyas has been a leader in jazz education for the past two decades. Currently, Vice President for Education and Curriculum Development at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, Dyas oversees the Institute's education and outreach programs, including Jazz in America (www.jazzinamerica.org), one of the most significant and wide-reaching jazz education programs in the world. He has presented jazz workshops, teacher-training seminars, and jazz "informances" worldwide with such renowned artists as Ambrose Akinmusire, Don Braden, Bobby Broom, Dave Brubeck, Gerald Clayton, Robin Eubanks, Herbie Hancock, Antonio Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Sean Jones, Delfeayo Marsalis, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, and Steve Wilson.
Prior to his current position at the Hancock Institute, Dyas served as Executive Director of the Brubeck Institute where he implemented its College Fellowship Program, Brubeck Festival, Summer Jazz Colony, and Jazz Outreach Initiative. Before that, he served as Director of Jazz Studies at Miami-Dade College – one of the nation's largest and most multi-cultural colleges, and New World School of the Arts – Miami’s award-winning performing arts high school.
Throughout his career, Dyas has performed across the country, designed and implemented new jazz curricula, directed large and small ensembles, and taught various jazz courses to students at virtually every level of musical development – age seven to seventy, beginner to professional, learning-challenged to prodigy. He has conducted jazz and tune-learning clinics, adjudicated high school and collegiate jazz festivals, and presented numerous jazz seminars throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, Columbia, Cuba, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey. He also teaches Jazz Pedagogy at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, and serves as an adjudicator for the Annual GRAMMY Music Educator Award.
Additionally, Dyas has written for DownBeat magazine and other national music publications, presented clinics, and performed at a number of International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and Jazz Education Network (JEN) Annual Conferences, co-founded the International Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Competition, served on the Smithsonian Institution's Task Force for Jazz Education in America, and contributed the chapter “Defining Jazz Education” to the biography, "David Baker - A Legacy in Music." Dyas recently introduced his “What is Jazz and Why It’s Important to the World” lecture for International Jazz Day, for which he annually presents education events in conjunction with the Hancock Institute and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He also has made a series of teacher-training jazz education videos (all available at jbdyas.com), including a national webinar along with Herbie Hancock and US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona on the importance of jazz education in our public schools.
Dr. Dyas received his Master’s in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and Ph.D. in Music Education from Indiana University. He is a recipient of the DownBeat Achievement Award for Jazz Education. A professional bassist, Dyas has performed well over a thousand jazz and commercial dates throughout his career and continues performing in various jazz and commercial music settings.

Tue, 30 Aug 2022 - 143 - Special Guest, David Shields
Welcome to JazzPianoSkills; I'm Dr. Bob Lawrence. It’s time to Discover, Learn, and Play jazz piano!
I am happy to share my interview with jazz pianist and professional tennis coach David Shields.
David has combined a love of music and sport, tennis in particular, that has taken him worldwide. He studied piano from an early age, mainly classical works, but jazz was never far away. At the same time, he was working on his tennis game and went on to play through college, with a stint in the Army thrown in.Teaching tennis became a primary focus for the next few decades. He received an offer to teach and play in France and spent four years there. The piano was always there off the court, and the studies continued.
David has lived in Australia for nearly 40 years, with the past 20 years spent producing and presenting jazz programs on Melbourne radio. He is looking forward to a never-ending journey at the keyboard.
Now, It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome to JazzPianoSkills, Mr. David Shields.Tue, 23 Aug 2022 - 142 - Key of B Major Melodic Workout
