This passage marks a pivotal change in the book of Matthew and in the earthly ministry of Jesus. It is a sad passage. It is both a tribute and a rebuke for rejection of the truth and missed opportunity.

This is a transition place in Matthew in terms of how Jesus relates to his disciples. They’ve been in the classroom up to this point and now its hands on. This is the time for them to experience being used by God in order to gain confidence and not blow it in the future.  Bottom line to this passage is this: God wants to use us.

Dr. Crawford Loritts says that becoming a disciple of Jesus requires a decisive commitment. You have to decide. Jesus does not call for incrementalism.  He does not call you to wander your way into this thing. He does not call for you to process your way into this. To become a disciple means in some many words, you have no control over your life. It’s a life-long journey. You make the decision decisively, but it is a life-long journey.  Our study in Matthew continues today.
