- 40 - Episode 34 - Senjutsu (Side B)
Well, dear listeners, we've reached the end of our Maiden Voyage. Ed and Stu discuss the second half of Iron Maiden's 17th studio album, Senjutsu. There is a significant and nearly catastrophic drop-off in quality with the second half of this album and the guys are not happy about it! The guys discuss how Billboard's change in how they track album performance to account for the rise in streaming adversely affected Iron Maiden's chart success with Senjutsu. They reached #3, but if Billboard used its old measurement of pure album sales, Maiden would have had their first #1 album! Wowsers! Ed and Stu talk about some other stuff, but really they mostly just suffer through the back half of this very uneven album. Way to end on a high note!
Thanks for listening along with us. It was a long journey made longer by our own ineptitude, but if you've continued to listen, we appreciate you. Keep the show in your feed because Ed and Stu are making plans for more content!
Hugs and kisses! XOXOXOXOX

THIS IS IT! We have reached the final (so far?) Iron Maiden album with Senjutsu! Their 17th studio album was released in September 2021, just one day shy of 6 years after their last album, beating the record set by The Book of Souls for the longest stretch between studio album releases. The album gets off to a strong start and Ed and Stu discuss the album's positive commercial and critical reception, and how Senjutsu marked the band's highest ever charting position on the Billboard 200, reaching #3.

We're nearing the end of our work as Ed and Stu discuss Iron Maiden's 16th studio album, The Book of Souls. The band's first ever double album was released in September 2015, over five years after their last album release, marking the longest stretch between two Maiden albums to this point. The guys follow-up on some grammy controversy talk, the band's impressive tour schedule and the corporate shuffling of deck chairs that seemingly ended a 30-year relationship with EMI but nothing really changed. Mega corporations are stupid!

Ed and Stu are back to discuss the second half of The Final Frontier. This was the band's longest album when it was released and Ed challenges Stu to guess the second and third longest albums. The fellas talk about some of the artwork released in connection with the album and barely survive the worst two back-to-back tracks to appear on any Iron Maiden album! It's getting rough out here for your intrepid hosts!

We're heading into outer space to cover Iron Maiden's fifteenth studio album, The Final Frontier! Ed and Stu discuss the end of the band's 30-year relationship with EMI records (sort of), the half live action, half animated video for the album's title track, the band's non-stop work schedule since the last album and how insane it is that the band's first Grammy for Best Metal Performance comes from this album!

As we continue talking about the band's fourteenth studio album, we discuss the "easy" recording process, how Steve Harris and co-producer Kevin Shirley decided not to master the tracks to achieve a more live sound, and the story of how the band's 2005 tour preceding this album devolved into animosity with their co-headliner in North America, Ozzy Osborne, leading to Sharon Osborne sabotaging Iron Maiden's final show of the US part of the tour!

We're covering Iron Maiden's 14th studio album, A Matter Of Life And Death, released in late August and early September of 2006. The album has a loose theme around war and religion and also being a real slog to get through! AMoLaD received generally good reviews and was named best metal album of the year by multiple magazines. Rolling Stone gave it 3 out of 5 stars, saying the band was aging gracefully but adding they now march where they once galloped. Do our intrepid hosts agree? Find out!

Ed and Stu continue their coverage of Iron Maiden's thriteenth studio album, Dance of Death. This half of the album features the band's first fully acoustic track, "Journeyman," and the first song co-written by drummer Nicko McBrain, "New Frontier," which is, of course, about the dangers of human cloning. Everyone was talking about human cloning in 2003! This side of the album also features another classic war-based epic, "Paschendale."

BONUS ALERT! THIS IS GETTING TO BE A HABIT! We've reached the end of our bloviating Blaze-based bonus content. After focusing our first two Blaze bonus eps on songs by Wolfsbane, the final in our series moves to listening to a few of his most recent releases. Ed listens to a single released in September 2024, "Ghost in The Bottle," and the title track from Blaze's most recent studio album, "Circle of Stone." But wait there's more! As a bonus to the bonus, Ed sneaks in some belated holiday cheer when he realizes Blaze released a Christmas song in 2016, "Crazy Christmas." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! Tue, 04 Feb 2025 - 22min - 27 - Episode 22 - Virtual XI (Side B)
We've reached the end of Blaze Bayley's time as singer of Iron Maiden, as the show covers the second side of Virtual XI. Ed and Stu talk about Bruce Dickinson's solo work overshadowing Iron Maiden's output, but still not selling as strongly as the band's mediocre work with Blaze.
The guys also discuss how Virtual XI may be the most Steve Harris dominated album Iron Maiden has ever released. Half the songs are by Harris alone and he contributed heavily to three songs by Dave Murray. The album was also recorded in Harris' barnyard home-studio and Harris mixed the album and co-produced it. So we know who to blame!

Tue, 28 Jan 2025 - 17min - 25 - Episode 21 - Virtual XI (Side A)
Ed and Stu dive headfirst into the second, and final, album of the Blaze Bayley era, Virtual XI. They discuss how Iron Maiden's 11th studio album feels like the ebb of this whole podcast process!
Released in March 1998, the album was apparently titled Virtual XI to tie-in to both Iron Maiden's computer game, "Ed Hunter," and, naturally, the fact that the FIFA World Cup was happening that year. Makes total sense!

Blaze reportedly did not enjoy the lengthy process, which aptly describes how Ed and Stu feel about listening to this album!

It's official! We're back or the start of Season 2 of Maiden Voyage, where Ed and Stu cover the first side of Iron Maiden's 10th studio album, The X-Factor!
Released in October 1995, this marks the first album with the band's third singer, Blaze Bayley. Ed and Stu jump right into the thick of it, discussing the wonderfully absurd lyrics of the album's opening track, "Man on the Edge" about the Joel Schumacher movie, Falling Down.
How will Blaze fit in with the band? Will singing bland, overly-long songs prove detrimental to Blaze's chances to succeed as Maiden's new singer? Will Ed ever stop pronouncing a hard "J" when saying Janick Gers' name? All this and more on this episode of Maiden Voyage.

That's right, friends! After a lengthy hiatus, Maiden Voyage is returning to continue the chronological journey through Iron Maiden's studio albums. Stu and Ed will pick up where they left off, beginning with the band's 10th studio album, The X-Factor.
In this brief Season 2 intro, Ed offers "reasons" for the lengthy delay in releasing new episodes, looks back at the album rankings from Season 1, sets the stage for where things stood for the band after Fear of the Dark, and explains that all episodes will be released for free!
New episodes will start releasing Friday, January 10! What a time to be alive!

Well, dearest listeners, we've come to the end of our first season and Stu and Ed go out with a bang in this too long epic episode covering Side B of Fear of the Dark. It's the end of an era for Iron Maiden as Bruce Dickinson departs the band for the next 8 years and 2 studio albums, but while this album side is, at best, not great, it closes on a high note with the iconic titular song.
The episode ends with a shocking reconfiguration of the absolutely definitive album rankings to date, as Stu and Ed realize they've made a grievous mistake. Where will things wind up? What are you waiting for? Start the episode already!

Fri, 01 Jan 2021 - 1h 18min - 19 - Episode 17 - Fear of the Dark (Side A)
Ho, ho, ho! What could be better than a new episode of Maiden Voyage for Christmas?!? What's that? You had a whole list of things you asked for and a new Maiden Voyage episode wasn't one of them? Well, consider this a fun, unexpected stocking stuffer!
Ed and Stu are talking Side A of Fear of the Dark, which starts off with the ripping single "Be Quick or Be Dead" and . . . . continues from there. The guys discuss everything from the many, um, "controversies" of the Maxwell family, to the numerous underwhelming B-Sides off the album's singles, to the surprising discovery of Bruce at the bottom of one of Ed's many adventures down a research rabbit hole.
There is only one more episode to go in Maiden Voyage's first season. To hear the episodes covering the two Blaze Bayley albums as they are released, sign up for our patreon! But don't fret, the show will be back soon with season 2, covering the rest of Iron Maiden's studio albums from Brave New World through Book of Souls.

Fri, 25 Dec 2020 - 1h 00min - 18 - Episode 16 - No Prayer for the Dying (Side B)
Moving on to Side B of NPftD, Stu and Ed discuss killers-for-hire, the existential dread of submarines and the ocean, being suspended from the ceiling by hooks in your flesh, Nightmare on Elm Street and Russia, Russia, Russia! You know, normal stuff!
Side B includes what is, remarkably, Iron Maiden's only single to reach #1 on the UK charts with "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter." Stu and Ed also talk about the album art and how it resets the depiction of the band's mascot, Eddie. Gone are the cyborg enhancements and lobotomy scar. We're back to OG zombie Eddie with whisps of white hair and sporting a ripped t-shirt as he bursts from a grave. Everything old is new again!

Fri, 18 Dec 2020 - 37min - 17 - Episode 15 - No Prayer for the Dying (Side A)
Coming off the highs of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son ("7Soa7S"), the band has its first lineup change in 8 years, since the album Piece of Mind. Guitarist extraordinaire Adrian Smith left the band and was replaced by Jancik Gers. Ed and Stu struggle to pronounce his name properly because they are stupid Americans, and they have way too much information about the Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio which was used to record the album in a barn on Steve Harris' property.
The album received mixed reviews, but the momentum of 7Soa7S still propelled the album to hit #2 in the UK, spending 14 weeks on the charts. It also managed to hit #17 in the US.

Fri, 11 Dec 2020 - 51min - 16 - Episode 14 - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Side B)
It's time for Side B of Iron Maiden's epic album, 7th Son, etc. Stu and Ed continue having a grand ol' time with the album. They discuss celebrities that are rumored to be 7th sons of 7th sons, and Ed gets real, explaining that his wife is not a fan of Maiden which will inevitably lead to the dissolution of his marriage. Sad.
Side B is chock full of more great tunes. Enjoy it while you can, dear listeners! Where will this album rank? Will it take the top spot from Powerslave? The suspense is surely killing you, so listen now!

Fri, 04 Dec 2020 - 53min - 15 - Episode 13 - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Side A)
Our voyage continues as we discuss Side A of Iron Maiden's epic concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (hereinafter "7th Son" for brevity's sake). Ed and Stu wind up having a lot to say about this album and its tale of a boy born with special powers because he had a bunch of brothers and uncles!
Maiden's back on top with this album, both creatively and in terms of record sales. 7th Son debuted at #1 in the UK, spending 18 weeks on the charts. The fellas can see why as they enjoy listening along, trying to decipher the album's narrative as they go.

Fri, 27 Nov 2020 - 52min - 14 - Episode 12 - Somewhere in Time (Side B)
We're back to endure Side B of Somewhere in Time and Stu and Ed wind up experiencing serious "Deja Vu" as they dislike this side of the album as much, if not more, than the first! We start with a long song about cross-country and end with an even longer song that can be used as Cliffs Notes to learn everything Alexander the Great ever did (though we like that song).
Where will this one fall in our on-going list ranking Iron Maiden's albums? I think you can guess....

Your intrepid hosts return to discuss Side B of Iron Maiden's fifth studio album, Powerslave. Stu and Ed cover the epic and grueling tour the band endured in support of the album, which entailed 189 gigs over the course of 331 days across 28 countries. During the tour, Iron Maiden became the first rock act to bring a full stage show behind the iron curtain, playing shows in Poland, Hungary and Yugoslavia. The band also played to the largest crowds in their career to date, playing in South America for the first time in front of 350,000 people in Brazil at the first ever Rock in Rio festival.
The fellas also play a game while listening to Rime of the Ancient Mariner, as Ed quizzes Stu in a game called, "Guess Which Song Is Longer!"

The first bonus episode is here! Ed is flying solo, giving a bit more info on The Soundhouse Tapes, the three song demo recording Iron Maiden made over New Year's 1978. He also does a little history lesson on iron maidens as torture devices. Plus, a little housekeeping on the show schedule and future bonus eps!
This bonus episode is being posted in the main feed as a free preview. If you like the show and don't mind listening to Ed blather on, consider joining our patreon (at the $3/month Strangers tier or above) to listen to future bonus episodes.

Stu and Ed discuss Side A of Iron Maiden's fourth studio album, Piece of Mind. The classic Maiden lineup is finally together with Nicko McBrain joining on drums. This album marks the beginning of a narrative journey for the depiction of Eddie in the band's artwork, with the album cover showing him in a straight-jacket, with a visible lobotomy scar, which he will carry forward for many albums to come.
The guys also discuss the folly of Icarus and how Ed's views have changed regarding the guitar tones on this album.
The album was released on May 28, 1983, peaking at #3 and spending 18 weeks on the UK charts.
The was also the band's best selling album in North America so far peaking at #14 on the Billboard 200. It was certified gold in the US by July and platinum in 1986. It went platinum in the UK in 1995.
