For the 8th Episode of the Project Umoja Podcast, we have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Paul Ngwakum Akisa. Dr. Ngwakum is the Regional Health Advisor for UNICEF (The United Nations Childrens Fund) in Eastern and Southern Africa, responsible for 21 countries under his current mandate. Dr. Ngwakum is responsible for technical and strategic guidance of UNICEF offices in eastern and Southern Africa, providing support to governments in coordination with partners for situational analysis, planning, implementation, and monitoring of key health interventions with a focus on health system strengthening. Before joining the Regional Office, Dr. Ngwakum was UNICEF Chief of Health and Nutrition for Zimbabwe and Zambia. He also served as Chief of Child Survival and Development for UNICEF Madagascar. Previously, Dr Ngwakum worked for UNICEF on Immunization, Maternal and Child Health as well as Nutrition in South Sudan, Angola, and Mozambique. Before joining UNICEF, Dr. Ngwakum worked for two years as a hospital doctor in his home country Cameroon. He also has eight years of work experience with Doctors’ Without Borders in different capacities responding to health emergencies in Rwanda, The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Chad, Haiti, and as medical coordinator in Mali. Dr. Ngwakum is a medical doctor from the University of Yaoundé-Cameroon. He holds a master’s degree in Public Health from the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium, and a certificate in health care financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom. Le Dr Ngwakum est le conseiller régional pour la santé de l'UNICEF en Afrique de l'Est et en Afrique australe, responsable de 21 pays dans le cadre de son mandat actuel. Le Dr Ngwakum est responsable de l'orientation technique et stratégique des bureaux de l'UNICEF en Afrique de l'Est et en Afrique australe. Il apporte son soutien aux gouvernements, en coordination avec les partenaires, pour l'analyse de la situation, la planification, la mise en œuvre et le suivi des principales interventions sanitaires, en mettant l'accent sur le renforcement des systèmes de santé. Avant de rejoindre le bureau régional, le Dr Ngwakum était le chef de la santé et de la nutrition de l'UNICEF pour le Zimbabwe et la Zambie. Il a également été chef de la survie et du développement de l'enfant pour l'UNICEF Madagascar. Auparavant, le Dr Ngwakum a travaillé pour l'UNICEF sur la vaccination, la santé maternelle et infantile ainsi que la nutrition au Sud-Soudan, en Angola et au Mozambique. Avant de rejoindre l'UNICEF, le Dr Ngwakum a travaillé pendant deux ans comme médecin hospitalier dans son pays d'origine, le Cameroun. Il a également huit ans d'expérience professionnelle au sein de Médecins sans frontières, où il a occupé différents postes pour répondre aux urgences sanitaires au Rwanda, en Gambie, au Burkina Faso, au Tchad, en Haïti et en tant que coordinateur médical au Mali. Le Dr Ngwakum est docteur en médecine de l'université de Yaoundé-Cameroun. Il est titulaire d'une maîtrise en santé publique de l'Institut de médecine tropicale d'Anvers, en Belgique, et d'un certificat en financement des soins de santé de l'École d'hygiène et de médecine tropicale de Londres. The China-Global South Project (CGSP), formerly known as The China Africa Project, is a non-profit independent multimedia organization dedicated to exploring every aspect of China’s engagement with Africa. Geraud is an analyst and observer of China-Africa relations who graduated from Renmin University of China and has a master’s degree in International Development from the International University of Japan. He researched natural resources revenue management. Previously, he worked as a project manager for a small Congolese mining company in DRC. Géraud led the development of the CGSP interactive map (this can be found on the CGSP website) of the DRC's copper and cobalt mines to increase transparency on the mining supply chain.

Partant des fermes du Sénégal jusqu’aux couloirs du pouvoir à Washington, le parcours de Thione Niang est remarquable, c'est le moins que l'on puisse dire.
Thione est né dans une famille de 28 enfants au Sénégal. Il a immigré aux États-Unis en l’an 2000 avec seulement 20 dollars en poche.
Tout en s'impliquant dans sa nouvelle communauté, ses efforts l'ont conduit à participer en tant qu'organisateur communautaire pour le président Obama lors des élections présidentielles historiques de 2008 et à devenir co-président national de Gen44 pour la campagne de réélection de 2012.
Thione Niang dirige aujourd'hui trois organisations :
Give1project (une organisation qui fait la promotion du leadership global, l'entrepreneuriat et l'éducation pour les Africains); JeufZone Farms (une plateforme d'agrobusiness pour la production, la commercialisation, la distribution et la conservation de produits agricoles, avec une priorité donnée aux produits locaux); Akon lighting Africa (un projet co-fondé avec l'artiste renommée internationale Akon en 2014 dont la mission est de fournir de l'électricité à 600 millions de foyers et de communautés africaines grâce à l'énergie solaire durable;

From the farms of Senegal to the hallways of power in Washington, Thione Niang’s journey has been remarkable, to say the least.
Thione was born in a family of 28 children in Senegal. He immigrated to the USA in 2000 with only 20 dollars in his pockets.
While getting involved in his new community, his efforts led him to participate as a community organizer for President Obama in the historic 2008 Presidential elections and becoming national Co-chair of gen44 for the 2012 re-election campaign.
Thione Niang now leads three international organizations:
Give1project (an organization that promotes global leadership, entrepreneurship and education for africans), JeufZone Farms( an agro-business platform for the production, commercialization, distribution, and conservation of farm products, with a priority given to local produce.) Akon lighting Africa(a project co-founded with the award-winning artist Akon in 2014 with the mission of providing electricity to 600 million African households and communities through sustainable solar energy)
On top of all of this...He is the author of 6 books, including: Memoirs of an Eternal Optimist, Faces of Change,and even a recent children's book.
