- 25 - OST 01.06.2014 – Robin The Fog’s Denman Horn Special
Soundtracks, library and television music, usually brought to you by Mr. Jonny Trunk. This week’s show (and the first podcast in ages, for which we are truly and humbly sorry) comes to you from the Science Museum in London’s South Kensington, and was broadcast both live on Resonance FM and down a 27 foot-long loudspeaker from 1929. Lovingly restored by Aleksander Kolkowski and his team from the original design by Roderick Denman, today’s hour-long special features a carefully curated horn-friendly playlist designed to show the biggest loudspeaker in Britain in it’s most flattering light- and is therefore choc-full of field recordings, radiophonic curiosities, and – of course – foghorns. Full track-listing and some nice photos to accompany your listening experience here. I suppose I could have included them on this posting, but frankly I could do with the extra web traffic. Strap on your ear-goggles and let’s roll! Best wishes, Robin The Fog
Mon, 09 Jun 2014 - 59min - 24 - OST 14.04.2013 – John Parish
Soundtracks, library and television music and other assorted jollies with ringmaster Jonny Trunk. Today’s guest is rock master and soundtrack composer John Parish. Infamous for his collaborations with PJ Harvey, Parish has been quietly forging his career in the world of independent film, creating inspired soundscapes and scores for a number of hip art-house movies. His first ever soundtrack compilation has just been issued on Thrill Jockey Records and we’re very chuffed to have him on the show. Get downloading…
Tue, 30 Apr 2013 - 2h 00min - 23 - OST 16.05.2009 – Paddy Kingsland
Soundtracks, library and TV music with Jonny Trunk. This week’s special guest is Radiophonic Workshop legend Paddy Kingsland. Having found this show down the back of the Resonance sofa, we literally cannot believe listeners haven’t been picketing the Resonance studios for it’s release. Get downloading, quick!
Wed, 27 Feb 2013 - 1h 59min - 22 - OST 15.09.2012 – Summer Special
Soundtracks, library music and other assorted jollies with Jonny Trunk. After a ‘well-earned’ summer break (that’s what it says here), Jonny returns with a 2 hour beats of a show examining the awesome releases of the Olympic summer. He also uses the word ‘chillax’ for which he will be disciplined later. Headphones on…
Wed, 20 Feb 2013 - 2h 00min - 21 - OST 26.02.2011 Andy Partridge of XTC
Film soundtracks, library music and tank top appreciation with Jonny Trunk. Back in 2011 the OST Show travelled to Swindon to meet the great Andy Partridge. Here’s how it went.
Wed, 13 Feb 2013 - 2h 00min - 20 - OST 15.12.2012 – 2012 Review Part Two
Part Two of the 2012 Review Of The Year. More joy from 12 months of soundtrack action, including some rare Ravi Shankar film music to mark the great man’s passing.
Wed, 06 Feb 2013 - 2h 00min - 19 - OST 08.12.12 – 2012 Review Part One
Soundtracks, library music and assorted tittle-tattle brought to you by Jonny Trunk. With February looming large, what better time to look back at some of last year’s highlights? It’s probably best not to question the timing of these podcasts and just be glad they exist. Anyway, this week Jonny present a superb overview of the soundtrack releases of 2012. A feast that includes musical morcels from Moonrise Kingdom to lost recording found on a Paris dump.
Wed, 30 Jan 2013 - 2h 00min - 18 - OST 22.10.2012 – Southern Library Special
Jonny Trunk introduces a recently discovered stash of sublime 7″ library records from the early 1960s, all issued by the Southern library label. These are rare beasts indeed, all found by a dedicated OST listener who wanted to share his musical fortune with us all. Two hours of incredible music by the likes of Roger Roger, Johnny Scott and several more very clever musicians…
Wed, 23 Jan 2013 - 2h 00min - 17 - OST 03.10.2012 – Greek Special
Superb OST Show with Jonny ‘Spellcheck, Dammit!’ Trunk here with a music trip to Greece. Yes, Greek film music and Greek soundtrack Gods – Theodorakis, Vangelis, Hadjidakis etc and not a plate smashing sequence in sight. Awesome, beautiful, abstract and rarely heard sounds…
Wed, 16 Jan 2013 - 2h 00min - 16 - OST 04.05.2012 – Ten Year Anniversary Special
Jonny Trunk presents the Resonance FM tenth anniversary OST Show, with a 2 hour review of the film music, TV music and soundtracks we have played, discovered, dug up and championed in the last exciting decade. Marvellous! He also takes time out to give Robin The Fog a slap for not uploading these archive podcasts more regularly. More treats coming soon and more regularly, we promise… Here’s to the next ten years!
Wed, 09 Jan 2013 - 2h 00min - 15 - OST 20.10.2012 – BBC Records Special
Soundtracks, library and television music plus other assorted ephemera brought to you this week by Robin The Fog. Having just released ‘The Ghosts Of Bush’, a well-received LP of his recordings of the former World Service building Bush House and earning himself the title of ‘The BBC’s Resident Hauntologist’, it seemed only good and right to invite Mr. Fog to present a special edition of the programme looking at the BBC’s own in-house label and some of the weird and wonderful records they’ve put out over the years. Expect music for home movies, movement and mime, sound effects and even a few sailors, as well as a couple of extracts from the LP that some claim ‘may be the last piece of true radiophonics’. You’ll also discover the meaning of the phrase ‘taking down with birds’ and improve your German. Kinky… For further information, the complete tracklist and a further listen to ‘The Ghosts Of Bush’ visit http://robinthefog.com
Mon, 22 Oct 2012 - 1h 57min - 14 - OST 30.06.2012 – DJ Format
Soundtracks, library music and a generous helping of phat [sic] beatz [sic] with Jonny Trunk. This week homegrown Hip Hop artist and extraordinary record collector DJ Format (Aka Matt) joins Jonny in the broomcupboard to. Prepare yourself for two hours of quite brilliant film and library music from his enviable collection… Word is bond: www.djformat.com/
Wed, 18 Jul 2012 - 1h 58min - 13 - OST 24.03.2012 – ITC, The Saint and Cars Special with Andrews Roberts
Jonny Trunk is joined by Andrews “Aspergers” Roberts, one of the great factual dustbins in the UK. Andrews is incredible, and knows dangerous amounts about vintage TV and film. Here he chooses to hang out and talk about ITC, The Saint and cars a lot. An awful lot. Completely brilliant, but you may find your brain starting to seep out of your ears well before the end…
Fri, 13 Jul 2012 - 1h 59min - 12 - OST 14.04.2012 – Fenella Fielding, Darling…
Soundtrack, library, television and other raunchy swaggering with Jonny Trunk This week’s podcast (and the first for ages, sorry about that) is from April 2012 when the gorgeous Carry On thespian legend Fenella Fielding brought her rich, velvety tones to the studio and Jonny almost to his knees with excitement. After some initial trouble mic-ing the dear lady, we moved onto a playlist of some of her greatest moments, including a big bad mouse, an incredibly rare and incredibly sensual, erotic, aerobic workout flexidisc and lots of giggling. There was also a touch of hysteria generated by the competition, which must rank as one of the most demented OST phone-ins ever. Left us all panting…
Wed, 04 Jul 2012 - 2h 00min - 11 - OST 06.11.2004 – DJ Food Sesame Street Special
Soundtracks, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Something of a curveball for you this week, as rather than bring you the recent DJ Food episode (don’t worry, it’s coming!), the man otherwise known as Mr. Strictly Kev has been kind enough to send us a copy of his original OST appearance way back in 2004. We’re more than delighted to have it, partly because we weren’t terribly good at archiving ourselves back then, but mostly because at the time Kev was knee-deep in a project unearthing long-lost gems from deep within the vaults of the former Children’s Television Workshop. Yes, this week it’s all about Sesame Street and Kev brings us a selection full to bursting with tracks that you simply haven’t heard. The seven-minute performance of ‘Superstition’ is worth it alone, but that’s barely the tip of the iceberg. We’ve given you Sesame Street specials on these podcast pages before, but THIS is the original and the material here is largely unreleased. Indeed Robin The Fog was so excited that he had to sit down for a week…
Wed, 18 Apr 2012 - 1h 59min - 10 - OST 07.04.21012 – David Cain Radiophonics Special
Soundtracks, library music and other agreeable delights with Jonny Trunk. This week – David Cain! WOW! In the mid 1960s the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was home to three important figures: Delia Derbyshire, John Baker and today’s very special guest. Coming all the way from Poland on his way to a Maths conference, David pops in to talk Radiophonics with our man Trunk. Set course for two hours in the company of a radiophonic legend.
Wed, 11 Apr 2012 - 2h 00min - 9 - OST 04.02.2012 – Fiona Staniland’s Morricone In Love
Soundtracks, library music and other dirty smut with Jonny Trunk. Today he’s joined by Fiona Staniland, Morricone fan and now artist interpreting the wordless work of the maestro. Over the last year Fiona has been developing a show simply called “Morricone In Love” where, backed by her quintet (and the original films), performs the stunning music written for the underground Giallo movies of the 1968 – 1972 period. Fiona also treated us to a live performance of a couple of her favourites in anticpation of her sold-out show at Richmix in Bethnal Green Rd. And all this in spite of Robin and Kacper’s failed attempt got Jonny’s ancient Copycat echo machine working and provide the lady with some reverb. It’s probably still in the Resonance skip if anyone wants it…
Wed, 04 Apr 2012 - 1h 58min - 8 - OST 13.03.2010 – Bill Brewster’s DJ History Special
Soundtracks, library and televisual soundtrack-type shenanigans with Jonny Trunk. Today’s archive podcast is yet another show from 2010, when your host was joined by author, DJ, and crate-digging authority Bill Brewster. Co-founder of the highly influential ‘DJ History’ website, which started as a simple DJ and music forum and then mutated and grown into a publisher, label and reference point for legions of ‘clued-up DJs, record collectors and unshaven misanthropes’. Something tells me the average OST listener would fit right in!
Wed, 28 Mar 2012 - 1h 19min - 7 - OST 09.01.2010 – Andy Weatherall
Film soundtracks, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Due to popular demand here it is, our Andy Weatherall special from 2010. ‘What a guy, what records!’ said Jonny, who is rarely impressed by anything, which just goes to show what a momentous occasion it was when the producer, musician, DJ and all-round genius paid us a visit. What more needs to be said?
Wed, 21 Mar 2012 - 1h 19min - 6 - OST 06.03.2010 – Moon Wiring Club
Film soundtracks, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Kicking off this latest blast of missives from the OST archive we’re delighted to unveil this very special edition from 2010 featuring Moon Wiring Club! The man described by The Advisory Circle as ‘the inevitable Mr Ian Hodgson’ joins us in the studio to play some of his favourite records and a smattering of his own ‘delightfully other’ recordings. Speaking of which, this podcast is rather well-timed, as he just so happens to have a new album ‘Clutch It Like A Gonk’ out right now. And it’s rather super. Like this show. So get downloading!
Wed, 14 Mar 2012 - 1h 19min - 5 - OST 21.01.2012 – Fred Judd, Ian Helliwell & Public Information
Soundtracks, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Today Ian Helliwell is coming onto the OST Show. Ian lives in Brighton, is somewhat of an archivist and dare we say it, a polymath. He has spent the last few years, investigating (amongst many other things) the life and work of a certain F.C. Judd. Frederick Judd was responsible for some very early electronic music in the UK, wrote extensively on the subject and much of his musical work was issued on the Studio G library label. Ian has also made a full length film about this great, inventive man, ‘Practical Electronics’ and a new compilation of his Judd’s work ‘Electronics Without Tears’ is about to be released on the rather marvellous Public Information label. And pretty fabulous they both are too. The stage is set for a journey into the deeply strange and utterly wondrous soundworld. And don’t be fooled by the skip in the first few seconds, this is actually a lovely high-quality 320kbps mp3 file, which as you will know is CD quality. We really are too good to you…
Wed, 01 Feb 2012 - 1h 59min - 4 - OST 19.11.2011- Alan McKinnon
Soundtracks, Library Music and all that jazz with Jonny Trunk. Today’s special guest is Alan McKinnon, ace record collector. He’s come all the way from Lewisham with a sack full of decidedly groovy and obscure jazz records, some of which even Jonny isn’t familiar with (not that he’ll admit it). There’s also a healthy dose of ‘pancake angst’ and the usual extremely silly competition, this week mixing films and clothes. Get Cardi, anyone?
Wed, 28 Dec 2011 - 1h 59min - 3 - OST 20.08.2011 – Morricone POP!
Soundtracks, library and television music hosted by Jonny Trunk. Today – Morricone Pop! We examine exceptionally rare Morricone collaborations. All non soundtrack works, these superb records date from 1958 and run through to about 1965, crossing from classic Italain pop to jazz and more experimental recordings. We’ll also be playing the rarely heard Pastures OF Plenty, the 1962 pop vocal by Pete Tevis that was to become A Fistful Of Dollars three years later. Result! Incidentally, sorry this week’s podcast isn’t a bit more Christmassy. Robin The Fog popped down to the OST archive to try and find something a bit more seasonal, but then left his USB stick at the Resonance Christmas party. So you’ll just have to slap this one on while sitting around the festive table instead. A pretty decent compromise, don’t you think? Happy Christmas, OST fans!
Wed, 21 Dec 2011 - 2h 00min - 2 - OST 12.11.2011 – Adrian Corker
Soundtracks, library and television music hosted by Jonny Trunk. Special guest today is Adrian Corker, musician and film music composer. He has collaborated with, amongst others, Peter Greenaway and Michael Nyman, and has written and composed for over 15 films. His latest work is the soundtrack to acclaimed documentary Way OF The Morris, a soundtrack that is released in November. And in the usual combination of sublime and ridiculous, there’s cheap laughs to be had in another classic competition – Films and chocolate. We do have fun on this show, don’t we? Don’t we, though?
Wed, 14 Dec 2011 - 1h 59min - 1 - OST 18.06.2011 – Crime Jazz Special
Evenin’ all. I was proceeding down Borough High Street in a leisurely manner on the afternoon of June 18th, when I spotted the Defendant Jonny Trunk of 999 Letsby Avenue, willfully engaging in a special Crime Jazz edition of the OST Show, featuring classic cues by Bernstein, Ellington, Waxman and a plenitude of others. I had no option other than to feel his collar. Each week The OST Show welcomes a guest (a collector, composer, director, artist) or specialises in a specific film music genre or composer. Expect lively chat, competitions and anything from avant garde Morricone to Rock Hudson singing.
