From the archives this week on Songwriters From Here and Away: Graham Nicholas, recorded live at Alderney Landing, with trains rumbling by (I’d like to say that was planned). Graham is a Toronto songwriter who tells stories about flawed, funny, lovable people, and he does it with a wink. If you like John Prine, you’ll like him. We talked about Black Creek, which had just come out, and he played some songs. A lot has happened since: a live album called Blotto In Toronto, and a Maritime tour with Birdie Whyte in the fall of 2024. Go find his music and buy a record. https://www.instagram.com/graham_nicholas_music/ Tune in or online, or catch the podcast anywhere you get your podcasts or tright here at: SFHAA.ca #SongwritersFromHereAndAway #GrahamNicholas #CanadianMusic #FolkMusic #RootsMusic #Songwriter #Americana #CountryFolk #Podcast #SupportLiveMusic

Sat, 03 Oct 2026 - 138 - Loop de Loop: Live with Ian Sherwood
This week on Songwriters From Here And Away, we're going LIVE with one of Nova Scotia's most entertaining and hardest-to-categorize performers — Ian Sherwood. Ian shows up with a guitar, a saxophone, a loop pedal, and apparently no fear of using all three at once. He's a two-time Music Nova Scotia Musician of the Year, a Canadian Folk Music Award winner, and — according to at least one radio host — a guy who "entertains as much with his wit and stories as with his songs." We'd add: he also has a habit of building entire arrangements out of thin air, loop by loop, while cracking jokes in between. This one was recorded live, front-row-seat style, so sit back and enjoy! Guitar. Sax. Loops. Laughs. It's Ian Sherwood, live and beautiful. And he's playing Saturday night, Oct 3rd @ The Pink Piano in Lower Sackville, NSwww.sfhaa.ca #SongwritersFromHereAndAway #IanSherwood #NovaScotiaMusic #LiveMusic #LoopPedal #FolkPop #EastCoastMusic #Podcast #SupportCanadianMusic

Sat, 21 Mar 2026 - 118 - Dali Van Gogh: Songs, Stories & a Second Spin
You may have noticed lately that we’ve been dipping into the archives here on Songwriters From Here and Away. Before anyone thinks we’ve become a nostalgia show… There are a few very good reasons. First, planning is underway for the 2026 Songwriters Retreat, which turns out to involve more emails, spreadsheets, and kitchen logistics than any reasonable human should face in one sitting. Second, there’s a March 15th concert and livestream with Cheryl Gaudet coming up — which is something I’m very much looking forward to. Third, I’m currently trying to learn 35 Motown songs for a band called Sounds of Motown. If you hear me quietly muttering “Chain Of Fools” in the grocery store aisle, that’s why.and last but not least, ramping up songwriters shows and a songwriter thing with jim Henman, Jeannie Beks & Cailin Green. More rehearsals! So while the calendar is a little full, it’s also a perfect excuse to revisit some wonderful performances from the Songwriters From Here and Away archives. This week’s replay features Dali Van Gogh — a memorable conversation and performance that’s remixed and worth a listen.Website: https://dalivangogh.com Music: https://dalivangogh.bandcamp.com https://SFHAA.ca #DaliVanGogh#SongwritersFromHereAndAway#CanadianSongwriters#IndieMusic#MusicPodcast#LiveMusic

Sat, 21 Feb 2026 - 115 - A House Concert & Conversation with Ruth Manning
This week we’re revisiting a remix of a very special house concert and in-depth conversation with the wonderful Ruth Manning. Recorded in an intimate living room setting, this performance captures what I love most about house concerts: the closeness, the quiet attention, the stories behind the songs, and the space where music can really breathe. Ruth brings thoughtful songwriting, emotional honesty, and a beautiful sense of connection to her audience. In our conversation, we talk about craft, inspiration, and the lived experiences that shape the songs she writes. It’s relaxed, reflective, and filled with the kind of moments you only get when artists feel truly at home. If you’ve never experienced a house concert, this is a perfect glimpse into why they matter. And if you have, you’ll recognize that special magic right away. This week on Songwriters From Here and Away, we’re revisiting one of our most heartfelt and engaging Songwriters Circles — featuring Steven McClintock, Kim Dunn, and Mel Farrimond. Three artists with distinct voices, each bringing their own world of melody and meaning to the stage. From California pop craftsmanship to soulful East Coast piano and the thoughtful lyricism of Nova Scotia’s indie-folk scene — this circle is all about connection, creativity, and conversation through song. Tune in for laughter, stories behind the lyrics, and a musical chemistry that only happens when songwriters truly listen to each other. 🎶 Artist Profiles Steven McClintock With a career spanning decades, Steven McClintock has worn many musical hats — singer, songwriter, producer, and publisher. Based in California, Steven’s songs have appeared on major film soundtracks and been recorded by artists from Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) to Juice Newton. His writing combines strong melody with emotional insight, reflecting the craft of a seasoned storyteller. Beyond pop and country, his acoustic performances reveal a personal side — stripped down, sincere, and timeless. Whether behind the mic or mentoring younger writers, McClintock’s passion for the art of song remains unmistakable. Kim Dunn From Cape Breton to concert halls across Canada, Kim Dunn has long been a cornerstone of East Coast music. A pianist, singer, and producer, Kim’s playing has graced stages with Matt Minglewood, Bruce Guthro, and Rita MacNeil, and his solo work shines with honesty and grace. His voice carries warmth; his lyrics balance heart and craft. Dunn’s music often feels like a conversation between soul and piano — both reflective and uplifting. With multiple award nominations and deep respect from his peers, Kim continues to be one of Atlantic Canada’s most quietly brilliant musical forces. Mel Farrimond Mel Farrimond is a Halifax-based singer-songwriter whose songs explore identity, love, and belonging with a poetic honesty that resonates deeply. Blending indie-folk textures with thoughtful lyrics, Mel’s performances are as intimate as they are powerful — often weaving personal experience with universal emotion. A strong voice in Nova Scotia’s LGBTQ+ creative community, Mel brings openness and courage to their songwriting, encouraging audiences to feel seen and connected. Whether performing solo or in collaboration, Mel’s music celebrates authenticity and the beauty in being fully oneself.

You’ll also hear compelling modern voices from Landon Morris, Sarah Segal-Lazar, Tapes In Motion, and Charlie A’Court, each bringing their own perspective, craft, and lived experience into the songs. These are songs about belief, resilience, aging, love, and staying human in a changing world — written and performed by artists who know how to make stories linger. Tune in and rediscover why Canadian songwriters continue to matter. Steeple – “In the Sun”Bright, uplifting pop-folk with a melodic lift that feels both hopeful and grounded. Molly Ferdinand – “Ten Foot Two”Intimate, thoughtful songwriting delivered with warmth and emotional clarity. Cheryl Gaudet (with Rose Vaughn) – “Grandfather’s Hands”A tender, intergenerational reflection filled with grace and deep familial resonance. Mark Bezanson – “Mess Around”Roots-infused songwriting with grit, groove, and lived-in storytelling. Tiller’s Folly – “A Simply Extraordinary Life”Veteran Canadian folk storytelling that honours ordinary lives with poetic care. Tapes In Motion – “Nobody”A modern indie track blending atmosphere and introspection with subtle power. Landon Morris – “Slip Away”Soulful vocals and melodic songwriting that balance vulnerability and strength. Sarah Segal-Lazar – “Anything But Age”A thoughtful, articulate song challenging assumptions with intelligence and heart. Charlie A’Court – “Play Me Something Good”Effortless soul-rooted groove from one of Canada’s most compelling performers. Cheryl Gaudet – “All I Believe”A reflective, emotionally grounded song shaped by experience and honesty. Landon Morris – “Tightwire”Tension and release woven into a finely crafted modern roots song. Mark Bezanson – “Ruin”Darker lyrical terrain explored with confidence and strong melodic instincts. Mark Bezanson – “For Crying Out Loud”A sharp, expressive closer blending passion, reflection, and seasoned songwriting. Sat, 09 Aug 2025 - 67 - April Wine co-founder, Jim Henman shares his stories & songs in Concert
Jim Henman www.JimHenman.com shares songs & stories in a live concert recorded in Musquodoboit, NS. Co-founder of April Wine installed into the Canadian Music Industry Hall Of Fame, along with April Wine Juno award, commemorating April Wine’s induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Writing his first tune, at age 12, Jim spent much of his youth strumming a Stella acoustic guitar on the sandy shores of Clam Harbour, Nova Scotia. Jim wrote his first song on this Stella. Jim, with high school friends Myles Goodwyn, Greg Stephen, Dave Dodsworth & Doug Grace started the top 40 band, “Woodies Termites”. Jim and Myles went on to co-found the Canadian rock band, April Wine, in the fall of 1969 with Jim’s cousins, David and Ritchie Henman. Shortly after the release of their debut album in 1971, Jim decided to leave the band, moving back to the East Coast to start a family and pursue a career in Medical Technology. Jim officially re-emerged onto the East Coast music scene in the 90s, co-writing and co-producing the album,” More Than My Share” for Cape Breton singer, Jeannie Beks. He also co-wrote the music for “Death the Musical”, a stage production performed both at Halifax’s Neptune Theatre and in French, at Théâtre Génération in Montréal. This musical score was later released on CD and you can hear it at https://open.spotify.com/album/393fHJBKi7G7O5IUlYjU68 In keeping a promise to his late friend, Canadian blues artist, Rick Jeffery, Jim completed and produced Rick’s final album, 13 Vultures in 2009. Jim is accompanied by keyboardist Robert Campbell for this concert. www.RCampbell.com Songwriters From Here And away www.SFHAA.ca

Fri, 22 Nov 2024 - 63 - Recorded Live In Concert - James Gordon, Songwriter, teller of tales, author and fabulous entertainer
Recorded Live In Concert - James Gordon Songwriter, tale teller, author and fabulous entertainer Recorded Live by SFHAA.ca at The Pink Piano in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia James Gordon has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack, he’s recorded 40 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras, musical theatre and dance works, scored films, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. Between tours, James is a record producer, playwright, community activist, theatre director and currently has a part-time ‘side hustle’ as a Guelph City Councillor. These days he’s perhaps known as the composer of the viral internet hit “Crybabies Caravan”, about the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’ in Ottawa. It’s received more than 300,000 views and stimulated a lot of inspiring discussion. His songwriting-in-the-schools program “Rhyme Capsules” has brought him all over the world, creating songs with students of all ages, and it earned him a place of honour on the “Wall of Fame” in Guelph’s Youth Music Centre. His song ’Mining For Gold’ was featured in the John Sayles film ‘Silver City’, and was included on the classic Cowboy Junkies album ‘The Trinity Sessions’. Gordon’s iconic ‘Frobisher Bay’ has been recorded by more than 100 different acts world-wide, has become a standard in choirs everywhere, and is in ‘Rise Again’, the sequel to the legendary ‘Rise Up Singing’ songbook. Well known for his songs about social justice, heritage and environmental issues, he recently concluded a covid-safe virtual tour of his 6th full-length play ‘James Gordon’s Emergency Climate Musical’. His last album, ‘The Heritage Hall Sessions’ on Borealis Records charted internationally in the roots, singer-songwriter, and Americana categories. His newest album “When I Stayed Home” is just out, as is his unique ‘musical novel’ “The Ark Of The Oven Mitt” which includes a downloadable recording of 36 original songs that move the plot along. The book is a finalist in the Stephen Leacock Humour Medal competition, with the winner chosen in September. www.JamesGordon.ca All Songs by James Gordon - 100% MAPL

Stevenson left the band in 1968, after the release of their first album. During Stevenson's time with Earth Opera, the band frequently opened for The Doors, being fellow recording artists on Elektra Records, as well as having Jac Holzman as producer.[1] After leaving Earth Opera, Stevenson returned to Ottawa, where he continued to play locally for a number of years. One of his associations was as an early member of Heaven's Radio,[2] considered to be one of the best bands to come out of Ottawa in the 1970s.[3] As of the mid-1970s, Stevenson relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, from which his career has been based since. During his career, Stevenson has worked with many notable artists, including John Lee Hooker, Amos Garrett[4] and Tom Rush. Stevenson is the 2008 winner of the East Coast Music Award for Jazz Album of The Year.[4] With Tom Easley and Geoff Arsenault, he is also a 2009 East Coast Music Award nominee for Blues Album of The Year.[5]... ...." - Wikipedia Remastered episode.
