My guest this week, ADK native Kyle Lang, joins me to discuss the world premeire of his new original play, "Times Square". This story takes place at the beloved trail junction in the Santanoni Range of the Adirondack High Peaks known as Times Square.

The Times Square WORLD PREMIERE is January 26 & 27 at 7:00pm at the Ticonderoda High School auditorium in Ticonderoga, NY.

Synopsis:
Tom guides his friend Jordan to Times Square; not the one in New York City, but a small clearing deep in the Santanoni Range of the Adirondacks. From this junction, Tom waits for Jordan to complete three grueling climbs and finish New York’s most epic hiking challenge: the 46 High Peaks. As he waits for Jordan’s return, Tom experiences countless colorful characters--teens from a summer camp, a pair of former lovers, two barefoot hikers, and a man looking for his dog, among others--and points them in the right direction as they try to navigate the area’s frustrating maze of unmaintained herd paths. But literal direction is not the only aid these eccentrics need, as they try to cope with their own misery and mishaps. Times Square is a story of hilarity and heartbreak, of unity, and divergence.

This year on this special Christmas edition of The 46 of 46 Podcast i'll be putting an Adirondack twist on the classic "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" with the new story of Crank the Adirondack Hermit.

How Crank The Adirondack Hermit Stole Christmas

In the frost-kissed realm of the Adirondack High Peaks, where snowflakes dance and the north wind speaks,
Lived a hermit named Crank, with a heart so small,
Scorning the winter hiking season, Christmas and all.

Crank’s cave overlooked Marcy, with its cap of white,
And the MacIntyre range under the moon's soft light.
"Cursed be the hikers with their festive cheer,
Invading my solitude, year after year."

But this Christmas Eve, as the stars twinkled with glee,
Crank hatched a plan, wicked as could be.
"I'll steal their merry, their gear, and their feasts,
We'll see how they like these unwelcome beasts."

Down to Marcy Dam, he slithered with spite,
Where campers slept soundly in the frosty night.
One by one, he snatched sleeping bags, boots, and sacks,

Leaving behind only footprints in the snow's soft tracks.

But not content with just one mischievous spree,
He thought, "There's more to be done, much more by me."

To Lake Colden he went, under the moon's soft glow,
Stealing boots and jackets from the slumbering folks below.
By the light of his lantern, he worked through the night,
Taking what he pleased, but keeping out of their sight.

Next to the feldspar lean-to, where hikers dreamt of High Peaks,
He stole their maps and compasses, leaving them for weeks.
"Not a trail will they find, not a path will they know,
In circles they'll wander, in the heavy high peak's snow."

His heart chuckled as he imagined the morrow,
Campers waking to Christmas with sorrow.
But as he pilfered and plundered through the silent night,
A strange feeling arose, a flicker of light.

Amidst his cold caper, he paused to behold,
A family sharing a blanket, young and old.
Laughing and singing, a carol so sweet,
In the face of adversity, they wouldn't admit defeat.

Crank's heart, though icy, began to melt,
For a warmth like Christmas he'd never felt.
"These people, they share joy in the face of the cold,
Perhaps there's more to Hiking and Christmas than what I've been told."

With a newfound resolve, he returned every little bit,
Under the glow of the stars on a trail so brightly lit.
And as the campers awoke to Christmas Day's light,
They found their belongings, their faces bright.

But Crank didn't stop with just righting his wrong,
He joined the campers, Hiking along.
Sharing hot cocoa and stories so grand,
In the heart of the wilderness, hand in hand.

On Marcy's high summit, Colden's trap dyke,
In the MacIntyre range, he now found joy in the hike.
No longer just a hermit, hidden from sight,
But a friend of the mountains, sharing Christmas delight.

He helped a lost hiker find her way to the peak,
Shared his knowledge with campers, no longer so bleak.
And with every kind deed, Crank's heart grew wide,
In the love of the mountains, he now took pride.

And so in the Adirondacks, where the wild rivers flow,
Lives Crank, once a hermit, in the Christmas glow.
Amongst hikers and campers, he shares his tales so grand,
A part of the wilderness, forever hand in hand.

So if you wander the High Peaks, and a friendly face you seek,
Remember old Crank, once so sullen and bleak.
In the heart of these mountains, where adventures never cease,
Crank found his Christmas spirit, in the Adirondack's sweet peace.

2. One foot in front of the other IS the formula. This will never change. Too tired to get back down? Too bad. You still have to walk back whether you want to or not.

3. The mountains don’t care about you. If you disrespect them you will be put in your place.

4. Your bank account, status in life, skin color, age, sex, etc are all irrelevant. The mountains don’t care. You will either get to the summit or you won’t exactly the same as everyone else.

5. Climbing a mountain is hard. But so rewarding when you finally make it to the top. But if you quit easily you’ll never experience the top.

6. If you turn around because it’s “too hard” the mountain doesn’t care. It will remain unchanged. The only one who loses is you.

7. Every mountain has its place in the story

Throughout the 1930s a fierce competition among several ‘mountain marathoners’ was unfolding here in the Adirondack Mountains. In 1932, Bob Marshall set the bar high with the now infamous ‘Bob Marshall Traverse’ covering 13 high peaks & Mt Jo. Not to be outdone, on July 29, 1936 Herbert L. Malcolm made the final known contribution to this friendly competition - climbing 12 high peaks, 5 low peaks and ascending 25,552 vertical feet in 24 hours.

On August 5, 2023 Katie Rhodes set out to follow in Malcolm's footsteps tackling the Malcolm Traverse and she's going to take us through the feat mountain by mountain.

In the most epic rematch of the century, I will finally return to battle my arch nemesis, Cliff Mountain.

The first time I climbed Cliff and Redfield I spontaneously added them to my day while standing atop of Mt Marcy and lets just say it made an already long day a really, really long day totaling 17 hours, roughly 8k' gain, and 26 miles. Due to that my feelings on the mud-pit known as Cliff Mountain that day, my opinion may be skewed so it was time to revisit Cliff (and Redfield) with fresh legs, fresh lungs, and a fresh mind.

In this episode of The 46 of 46 Podcast I'll tell the story about the notorious plane crash of 1969 in Cold Brook Pass, nestled in the MacIntyre Range between Mt Marshall and Iroquois. Like many Adirondack plane crash sites this plane is still there and is often visited by high peaks hikers. Summer is over and that means the crisp Fall air is upon us. For some that means pumpkin spice and flannel shirts, for others that means it's time to get in the woods and fill the freezer for the winter. It's hunting season.

As a lover of all things Adirondacks and all things outdoors I am excited for hunting season because hunting and hiking have a lot of similarities. Putting on many miles deep in the backcountry in search of adventure, climbing mountains, interacting with nature, becoming one with nature. It's not surprising that so many hunters love to hike and hikers love to hunt.

Since this weekend kicks off the rifle season I thought, "why not do another episode about hunting in the Adirondacks"? This week I have author, professional archer, and ADK native Todd Mead on to talk all about the nuances of deer hunting in the "dismal wilderness" that is the Adirondack Park and just how much effort in the backcountry goes into finding deer in such a large and dense space like this 6-million acre state park known as the ADK.

Whether you're a hunter or not I think you'll continue to appreciate just how unique the outdoors in the Adirondack Park is from my conversation with Todd.

This week I'm bringing to you another story from an amazing young woman doing amazing things out on the Adirondack trails. Thirteen year old, Eleena Toukatly, is now the youngest and only teenaged finisher of the Lake Placid Ultra 9'er. She's also already an Adirondack 46'er. What were you doing at 13 years old? In this unique Summit Session I have the privilege of speaking to director and filmmaker, Seth Breedlove, of Small Town Monsters, to discuss his latest film entitled "On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey" which came out this week. In this new Summit Session Spotlight I'll shine the light on another person who got creative with the outdoors right in their own backyard. This week's spotlight is on Paul Fuzinski, host of the Aptitude Outdoors Podcast, who decided to paddle the 137-mile Maumee River from end to end simply because "he could". Not because it was some sought after local accomplishment to achieve but simply to do something fun and different in the outdoors right in his home state. All it takes is a little creativity, and some will, to have an outdoors adventure wherever you call home.

In this Summit Session I'll talk with Tim and Henry Horvath, a father-son hiking duo who recently completed an unsupported winter thruhike of the 138-mile Northville-Placid Trail and in doing so set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) at 7 days 9 hours 0 minutes. Tim and Henry are accomplished hikers and we break down their trip from the planning, to the gear they brought, and go day by day through their incredible winter adventure across the Adirondack Park's most remote land.

In this first "Summit Sessions Spotlight" episode I'll be putting the spotlight on a man named Brian Shultis who got creative and sought out a new way to explore his home state of New Jersey by climbing all 51 peaks over 1,000' elevation. This creative adventure took Brian to entirely new places he had never been (and wouldn't have explored otherwise) ultimately giving him a newfound appreciation of the great outdoors in his home state.

This new "Summit Sessions Spotlight" series moves beyond the Blue Line of the Adirondack Park and exists to highlight people getting creative in the outdoors and exploring their own backyards in new ways to create unique outdoors adventures. In this February episode I'm throwing it back to warmer days; a Summer-time hike where the gang and I set out to bushwhack up the 45th tallest mountain in the state, Green Mountain. “The Night Before Christmas in the Adirondack Mountains”

Adapted from Clement C. Moore’s poem, “The Night Before Christmas”

T’was the night before Christmas, and all through the Park
There was snow softly falling, it was quiet and dark.

The backpacks were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas would bring some new gear.

The hikers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of summit views danced in their heads.

And me in my tech wick and my darn tough socks,
I just couldn’t sleep; I dreamed of climbing those ice-covered rocks.

When out of my window I saw the moon rising,
I gathered my gear and I started off driving.

Down the road to the Loj I sped with great hast,
Not a moment more of this night did I dare want to waste.

The moon it did glisten on the new fallen snow
So I laced up my boots and I started to go.

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a view of the High Peaks so close and so near.

With their summits jutting up into the night sky,
I knew in a moment up the trail I must fly.

More rapid than eagles the mountain views came
And I whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

“Up Marcy, up Redfield, up Gray, Cliff, and Wright
Up Street and up Nye and then on to Skylight”

To the top of the mountains, I must reach every summit.
“I can do this,” I said, I know hiker’s who’ve done it.

Trekking poles in my hands and snowshoes on feet,
I was making great time, not a moment to eat.

So up to the mountain tops, this hiker he flew,
With my backpack full of gear, and water, and goo.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard through the trees,
The crunching of snow by boots with great ease.

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the trail St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in Gortex, his suit was bright red,
And a big floppy hat sat on top of his head.

A compass in hand, and GPS on his back,
He had all the right gear in his Santa Clause pack.

His microspikes how they glistened, his headlamp how bright,
And I thought to myself, “Am I seeing this right?”

His boots were laced up tight with a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

The hose of his camelback he held tight in his teeth,
And his scarf it encircled his heard like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he hiked, like a bowl full of jelly.

He started along, that old elf was fast
And I yelled from behind him, “Hey Santa you ever heard the 46 of 46 podcast?”

He nodded his head as he trekked through the snow
And I said to myself, “OK! Time to go!”

He spoke not a word, but went straight up the trail,
I tried to keep up but I was chasing his tail.

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, to the summit he rose.

He sprang up the rock face, to the top he did climb.
So fast, and so quick, he left me behind.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he hiked out of sight.
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

In this Summit Session episode I'll speak with licenced Adirondack Guide, Allison Cascade Kozel, and we'll discuss all the tips and tricks she has learned over the years guiding families with kids out on the trail. Allison also started hiking in the Adirondack high peaks when she was just five years old and became an ADK 46'er a mere two weeks after her 13'th birthday; so she brings a unique perspective and experience level to this episode, having hiked both with kids and as a kid.

The Soda Range. This 6-mile loop ridge trail definitely qualifies as a "less traveled trail" in the Adirondack Park and what was supposed to be a quick, simple, afternoon hike on a trail I'd yet to experience, turned into the single most painful and hardest day I've ever experienced in the woods.
