At its 2026 Season Launch in Carton House, Golf Ireland unveiled a pilot for a system which will statistically rate the performance of male and female players in scratch events all over Ireland. 

The Golf Ireland Strokes Gained Ratings system has been devised in partnership with Quantum Sports Data, and will be driven by results collected not only from Golf Ireland championships and events, but also from the considerable schedule of Men’s and Women’s Senior Scratch Cups which are organised by clubs all over Ireland. 

Dylan Beirne, Founder & CEO of Quantum Sports Data joins us on the podcast to explain further how exactly this adjusted strokes gained data will work and what it means for elite Irish amateur golfers.

The pilot will run through the 2026 season with a view to its introduction in 2027 as a new primary qualification method for all men’s and women’s championships on the Bridgestone Orders of Merit, as well as - potentially - for talent identification purposes and for selection for teams and coaching panels. 

Using scoring data returned to Golf Ireland’s WHS Clubhouse platform, players will receive an Adjusted Strokes Gained rating which will be driven by their scores over a rolling two-year period. 

Adjusted Strokes Gained measures how many strokes better or worse a golfer performs in each round compared to an average championship-level player, accounting for course difficulty and playing conditions. 

During the pilot season the ratings will be updated once a month, on the first day of each month on which no eligible event is taking place.

Ireland has an incredibly rich and celebrated history of amateur golf, with icons like Christy O’Connor, JB Carr and others creating a legacy in golf not just at home but across the globe.Ireland’s amateur championships have become a benchmark for elite golfers, with some of the country’s top professionals etching their names into Irish golfing history long before they won on the DP World Tour, PGA Tour and even the career grand slam.The men’s Irish amateur calendar is made up of 6 Championships, Four Provincial championships that take place at the same venues every year (mostly). These are the North of Ireland at Royal Portrush, The South at Lahinch, The East at County Louth and The West at County Sligo golf club. The two remaining Championships, the Irish Amateur Open and the Irish Amateur Close move around the country to different venues each year.This is the first episode in a 6 episode series where I’ll be doing a deep dive into each championship, their history, their winners and their legacy.In this episode we’re going to look at the West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship, hosted at County Sligo Golf Club. The West is the first championship of the Irish amateur calendar season, played every year on the Easter bank holiday weekend. The championship dates back to 1923, and was first won by Larry P. Vernon back when the championship was decided over 36 holes stroke-play qualifying for 16 places in matchplay with a 36-hole Final. The first ever West of Ireland was played from 13th-16th August.The West has an amazing list of winners and was dominated initially by “the big 4”. In 1930 Cecil Ewing won his first of 10 West of Ireland titles. This dominance was only out-done by JB Carr who in 1946 won his first of 12 West of Ireland titles.Joe Carr is inarguably, Ireland’s most respected amateur golfer. His career achievements will never be equalled, winning 37 Irish Amateur Championships, representing the Walker Cup 11 times and winning the British Amateur 3 times in 1953, ’58 & 1960. He is the first Irishman to make ‘the cut’ at The Masters and speaking of the respect Joe Carr had in the Irish golf world, Herbert Warren Wind said ”Joe Carr receives the same overwhelming adoration in Ireland today as Bobby Jones did in America in the twenties”J.B first played the West in 1940 and won his first West of Ireland title in 1946, with his 12th win coming in 1966, five years before his son, Roddy Carr, would go on to win at Rosses Point.On the 25th anniversary of the West, Joe Carr and Cecil Ewing faced off in the final for the first time. Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is currently proposing a variation to the County Development Plan that would rezone Stepaside Golf Centre and Jamestown Pitch & Putt from recreational use to residential development.

While Ireland is facing a housing crisis and the need for more homes is widely acknowledged, this episode explores why this particular proposal may not be the right solution.

Councillor Pierce Dargan joins the podcast to explain how the proposal came about and why he believes there are better alternative sites available. The key argument is simple: instead of rezoning a thriving, privately owned family sports facility that provides significant community value, the Council could rezone derelict commercial sites in Sandyford and Cherrywood — land that is currently underutilised and whose owners are actively seeking to build housing.

Stepaside Golf Centre is not just a driving range. It’s a long-standing family-run business, a vital local amenity, and a space that supports physical health, mental wellbeing, and community connection. The owners have even submitted plans to expand with additional indoor sports facilities. In an area that has already seen significant residential development in recent years — and where the Council itself has identified a shortage of amenities — many residents are questioning whether removing an existing recreational hub makes sense.

The public consultation phase generated an unprecedented response, with hundreds of submissions — the majority relating directly to Stepaside and Jamestown. The next stage now lies with the Chief Executive’s report, after which councillors will vote on the proposed zoning changes. Councillor Dargan intends to table a motion to remove Stepaside from the residential land bank and replace it with alternative, more suitable commercial sites.

What happens next?

The Chief Executive’s report will be published in the coming weeks.

A formal motion will be brought before all 40 councillors.

A majority vote will determine whether the rezoning proceeds.

How can the public help?

Email all councillors in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown — not just local ward representatives.

Express support for protecting Stepaside Golf Centre and Jamestown Pitch & Putt.

Advocate for rezoning derelict commercial land instead.

Share information within local community groups to maintain awareness ahead of the council vote.

Jonny sat down with Stuart to discuss his time as a professional, the decision to turn back amateur and his ambitions now he is no longer playing golf for a living.

Rory Mcilroy has joined the annals of history after winning the 2025 Masters and became just the 6th person to complete golf's career grand slam!

Really that's been attributed to what they've done with the new Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X Golf Balls that was launched in 2024. They've got tremendous momentum and success, not only in the marketplace, but in Tour as well, where this year on tour, Callaway had three major wins and over 19 wins worldwide on the Tours in 2024. Similarly, the big thing for Callaway in this category is they hit their all-time market share high earlier this year in July of 22.2%.

The plan is to build upon that momentum in 2025 and have an exciting new addition to the Chrome Tour family of products called Chrome Tour Triple Diamond. It's basically a lower spinning Chrome Tour X and it's really designed for the player that's looking for that low spin and the benefits in how that low spin benefits that type of player, a player that spins the ball too much.

It’s a golf ball that’s going to help bring that spin down, optimise trajectory, maximise distance, and be more consistent into the wind. In 2024, AIG launched a new initiative, the ‘Inner City Golfer’ in an effort to break down barriers in the traditionally exclusive world of golf. This initiative focused on providing kids from Dublin’s inner-city with access to the sport, reshaping golf’s perception as a posh or wealthy sport and opening doors to potentially life-changing opportunities.

This is the first year of the initiative and over the course of 16 weeks, AIG along with some partners including Golf Ireland, Carr golf and McGuirks have created a new pathway to learn and excel in a sport typically out of their reach.

Adam Duffy and Daniel Mullen took up golf just 16 weeks ago and are now hooked!

I sat down with Adam and Daniel as well as their teachers at Clontarf Golf Club, where Adam and Daniel will now be taking up membership through this initiative, to explore why they wanted to take up golf, what they thought golf was like before then began and whether they now think golf is more approachable now they've started.

Sean Keeling is one of Ireland's brightest young golfing prospects, he's had a stellar amateur boys career claiming basically every title on offer as well as competing in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2023.

Sean spoke about his first full year on the Men's amateur circuit, he had a number of close calls, some team wins and after earning a spot in the Amgen Irish Open in RCD, Sean became the youngest amateur since Ronan Rafferty to make the cut at the Irish Open. Michael and Jonny catch up after round 1 of TGL and the Team Cup have wrapped. Overall our thoughts on TGL are very positive, we liked the banter between golfers, the tech is impressive, but it's all very personality dependant and that'll be worrying when some golfers like Cantlay tee it up.
