September 11, 2001, is a day that is etched in the memories of Americans – the day that terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City, killing nearly 3,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of people have attended Tony Robbins programs, but there’s an event that only takes place once a year in the States, where 2,500 people from all over the world come to Florida to experience one of his most intimate and intensive seminars — Date with Destiny. It’s six days of total immersion, and the people who take that journey discover who they are, what drives them, and their ultimate purpose, and they dive deep into how they interact and relate with others. In short, this is the place where they deal with the hard stuff. His work, for the most part, has been geared toward taking us into the issues of the world that are often obscured by media or politics, and the uncovering disturbing truths. So for this film, it’s a bit of a departure in subject. But the motivation, the storytelling, and the deep dive into parts unknown — that’s all there. And that’s what made the endeavor a clear choice for Joe. The film is called “Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru” and it premiered at South by Southwest in March, followed by a string of showings at film festivals. The documentary has been picked up by Netflix and will premier to members worldwide on July 15th. When you start your own company, it’s because you have the drive to sell a product or service you truly believe in. You feel that this item will add value to the lives of consumers or the world at large. But how do you stay in business and make progress in the professional world? The answer is strategic innovation. Think of some of the most prominent companies in the world: Netflix, Starbucks, Amazon, Apple. What do these companies have in common? They all found ways to reap the benefits of strategic innovation in their respective industries. Each of these companies found a way to deliver value to the lives of their target audience, and that’s why they continue to dominate in their fields. How can you master the art of strategic innovation? First, you have to start by asking yourself two key questions about your brand. Question #1: What business are you REALLY in? If you think about how this applies to a company like Starbucks, you might initially think they’re in the business of coffee, but you’d be wrong. Starbucks is in the business of connecting people. Customers know they can go to Starbucks and have a conversation with friends, go there for an interview, get some work done and enjoy the environment around them. Starbucks’ founder knew this, and that’s why the company is now a global phenomenon. It’s more than coffee – it’s a meeting place. Question #2: Who is your customer? You can run all the demographic tests you want, but until you really know who your target customer is and what they’re looking for, you’ll fail. Who are you trying to reach with your target or service? Think about it carefully and find a way to meet this person’s needs better than any other company can. Aiming for strategic innovation at your company doesn’t mean constantly trying to improve upon what you’re doing – it’s more than that. It’s about looking to the future and staying ahead of the curve, so you can always supply people with what they’re going to need instead of just what they need right now. It’s not enough to come up with new versions of your product unnecessarily. Instead, you really need to think about what you’re creating and find ways it will add unmatched value to the lives of your customers. The greatest companies in the world strategically innovate, and that’s how they keep their client base. Think about it: Would Blockbuster still be in business if they had strategically innovated? Instead, another company, Netflix, swooped in and broke down barriers. Netflix was successful because they were able to see the appeal of mailing movies directly to people’s homes, and eventually the power of streaming services. “No problem is permanent, only your soul is permanent.” Problems are a sign of life, as Tony says. Neil Howe’s theory is all about the patterns of the past and what they suggest we can anticipate in the future. Howe and his co-author William Strauss wrote two extremely impactful books – Generations (published in 1991) and The Fourth Turning (published in 1997). Strauss and Howe theory considers the 4-stage cycle that repeats every 80-100 years (approximately the length of a human life, also referred to as a saeculum). Their books suggest four turnings of history: 1. A High 2. An Awakening 3. An Unravelling 4. (Culminating in) A Crisis If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or uncertain about all that’s happening in the world, consider that a cycle of crisis predictably includes massive economic, cultural, political, religious, military, and broad institutional disruption. What can be helpful to remember in these times is that no storm lasts forever, and this too shall pass. NOTE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS: Additionally, one can consider four generational archetypes (a fancy word for patterns) of people born in the same era and coming of age shaped by the same historical events. So, for example, Millennials fall into the Hero archetype, while Gen Xers are Nomads, and Baby Boomers are Prophets. The generation born in or after 2005 are Artists. As each archetypal generation reaches the end of its 80-year lifespan, the cycle repeats. How often would you like your financial advisor to think of what’s best for you when giving you financial advice? Half of the time? All of the time? Create a backstory: Humans connect with emotion. Each one of us has a backstory — what’s yours? What led you to this point of your journey and how does it inform your alter ego? 4. Artifact enhancer: What object makes you feel powerful? A pair of glasses, a watch or even a trinket that you keep in your pocket can all connect you to your alter ego. These items can be triggering in a positive way and reconnect you to the reason why you needed your secret identify in the first place. 5. Immersion experience: Step into the altered state that your secret identity lives in. You need to be extremely intentional in who is showing up when your alter ego is required. Evaluate the situation and commit to the persona you’ve created. Once you’ve created your alter ego and lived with it for a while, you won’t need to go through these steps anymore. You’ll just know when, and why, you need to step into your secret identity. This strategy can help you build a business (and brand identity) by stepping outside of your comfort zone. American swimmer Michael Phelps knows about paving the road to greatness. As the most decorated Olympian of all time, Phelps holds 28 medals.
