- 560 - The myth of affluent relationships
What if everything you've been told about building relationships with wealthy clients is wrong?
A rare-book dealer spends four years cultivating a wealthy collector. They play golf together, attend the same social events, and know each other's families.
Then a $180,000 book creates a problem that needs solving.
The dealer thinks he's finally going to get the business.
Instead, the collector hires a complete stranger after a 45-minute conversation.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain why the belief that you must establish a personal relationship before wealthy people will hire you can lead to years of wasted marketing effort.
You'll discover why relevance can be more powerful than familiarity, how to demonstrate expertise before meeting a prospect, and three practical ways to establish credibility and trust without spending months networking and socializing.
I'll also share a simple five-minute test to determine whether your marketing is doing enough to turn wealthy strangers into prospective clients.
You don't necessarily need a personal relationship to win an affluent client. You need to give them a compelling reason to trust you.

Wed, 04 Nov 2026 - 11min - 559 - THE MILLIONAIRE WHO CLICKED ON AN AD
Who says wealthy people don't respond to advertising?
Luxury brands spend fortunes reaching affluent consumers. Yet many architects, financial advisors, consultants, and other professionals still believe wealthy clients can only be acquired through referrals and personal introductions.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Richard Caldwell, an architect who spent $12,000 on advertising with disappointing results, and Caroline Whitmore, an affluent homeowner whose search for the right architect reveals what really gets wealthy prospects to pay attention.
You'll discover why expensive-looking advertisements often fail, how to identify the concerns that actually motivate affluent buyers, and four factors that can make or break an advertising campaign: audience, message, placement, and credibility.
I'll also explain why advertising and referrals aren't competing strategies—and how they can work together to attract better-qualified clients.
Because the question isn't whether wealthy people respond to advertising.
It's whether your advertising gives them a compelling reason to respond.

Tue, 03 Nov 2026 - 14min - 558 - Do the wealthy always want the best?
Just because someone can afford your most expensive offering doesn't mean they want to buy it. And assuming otherwise could be costing you some very valuable clients.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Richard Bennett, a wealthy retired real estate developer who sets out to build his dream woodworking shop. Two companies compete for his business. One tries to sell him the finest equipment money can buy. The other takes a very different approach.
What happens reveals a surprisingly common mistake businesses make when selling to affluent clients.
I'll explain why wealthy buyers aren't necessarily indifferent to price, how recommending something less expensive can actually increase trust, and why your ability to explain the reasoning behind your recommendations may be more persuasive than the quality of what you're selling.
You'll also discover three practical ways to make affluent prospects more comfortable investing in your products or services—without discounting, overselling, or assuming that more expensive always means better.
Because wealthy clients don't necessarily want to spend less. They want to know they're spending wisely.

Mon, 02 Nov 2026 - 09min - 557 - The Wealthy Marketing Tricks That Almost Always Backfire
A beautiful luxury website. Exclusive membership. Expensive advertising. Sophisticated branding.
Vanessa Cole thought she had the perfect formula for attracting wealthy clients.
Then she spent nearly $18,000 on advertising, lost a $175,000 travel opportunity, and discovered that almost everything she believed about marketing to the affluent was wrong.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I reveal five marketing approaches that frequently backfire when you're trying to attract high-net-worth clients.
You'll discover why luxury imagery can make your business invisible, when exclusivity actually drives customers away, why targeting wealthy people isn't the same as targeting qualified prospects, and how expensive-sounding language can undermine your marketing.
I'll also explain why being too reluctant to follow up can cost you valuable business—and what to do instead.
If you're investing time and money trying to attract affluent clients without getting the results you want, this episode may help you identify what needs to change.
Stop trying to look like a business wealthy people hire. Start giving them a compelling reason to hire you.

Fri, 30 Oct 2026 - 12min - 556 - How to Know When Your Marketing Strategy Isn't Working
How do you know when your marketing strategy needs more time to work—and when you're simply wasting your time and money?
I've seen business owners spend years networking with the wrong people, advertising to prospects who can't afford their services, and creating content that attracts followers but very few paying clients. And all the while, they convince themselves they just need to be more patient.
But sometimes persistence is the worst possible strategy.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I'll share three questions you can use to evaluate your marketing, recognize when you're pursuing the wrong affluent prospects, and decide whether to stay the course or change direction.
I'll also explain why it's so difficult to spot problems in your own business, how seemingly productive marketing activities can actually hold you back, and why getting an experienced outside perspective can save you considerable time and money.
If you're serious about attracting affluent clients, this episode could help you avoid another year of doing something that was never likely to work.

Thu, 29 Oct 2026 - 05min - 555 - Sell the Experience, Not the Service
How to Make Affluent Prospects Imagine Being Your Client
Most businesses spend far too much time describing what they provide—and not nearly enough time helping prospective clients imagine what it would actually be like to work with them.
And when you're selling to affluent people, that can be a costly mistake.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Margaret Whitcomb, a talented private chef in Charleston whose beautiful website and impressive credentials weren't generating the interest she'd expected.
Then a conversation with one of her best clients revealed something surprising: the thing Margaret thought she was selling wasn't necessarily the thing her clients valued most.
You'll discover how to turn ordinary service descriptions into vivid experiences prospective clients can picture, the three ingredients of an effective marketing story, and why some of your most persuasive marketing messages may be hiding in conversations with your existing clients.
I'll also share examples from private aviation, luxury hospitality, and event planning, along with a practical exercise you can use to make your own messaging more compelling.
Because affluent prospects can already afford plenty of excellent products and services.
Your job is to help them imagine why life would be better with yours.

Wed, 28 Oct 2026 - 13min - 554 - How Do You Command $100,000 When Nobody Has Ever Paid You That Much?
How do you convince someone to pay you $50,000, $100,000, or even $200,000 when you've never commanded anything close to those prices before?
Imagine an artist who wants to sell six-figure paintings but has no history of expensive sales, no important gallery relationships, and very few wealthy connections.
Now consider a consultant who wants to charge $50,000 for advice but has never received more than $5,000. Or an architect who wants to design $20 million homes but has never worked on anything approaching that level.
They're all facing the same problem: How do you establish credibility at a level you've never operated at before?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, Mark Satterfield explores the strategies that can help professionals break into substantially more affluent markets without pretending to have experience they don't possess.
Discover why raising your prices doesn't automatically elevate your positioning, how to borrow credibility through the right relationships, why access can be more valuable than advertising, and how to create opportunities that establish your reputation before asking for a major financial commitment.
If you're trying to attract wealthier clients, command higher fees, or move into a more exclusive market, this episode offers a practical way to approach one of the toughest challenges in affluent marketing.

Tue, 27 Oct 2026 - 19min - 553 - The Skills AI Can't Replace
Artificial intelligence is making it easier than ever to produce polished proposals, sophisticated presentations, marketing campaigns, and business analyses.
But if everyone has access to increasingly powerful technology, what will make affluent clients choose you?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Thomas Ellison, a successful home technology entrepreneur who loses a $350,000 project to a smaller competitor.
The reason has very little to do with technical expertise—and everything to do with how the competing business owner handles people.
You'll discover why traditional soft skills may become some of the most valuable business skills in the AI era, how to build trust with affluent prospects, and five practical techniques for improving your communication, listening, and relationship-building abilities.
We'll also explore the danger of automating so much of your marketing that you eliminate the personal connections that make clients want to work with you.
The future may belong to professionals who combine sophisticated technology with exceptional human skills

Mon, 26 Oct 2026 - 11min - 552 - Is Velvet Rope Marketing Just an American Idea?
Americans often associate luxury with prestige, status, and exclusivity. But what happens when you take that same marketing approach to countries where wealthy people prefer understatement, privacy, and discretion?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I share the story of an American luxury real estate professional whose approach to attracting affluent clients runs into unexpected resistance in Finland.
You'll discover why exclusivity means different things in different cultures, how to adapt your positioning for international affluent markets, and why emphasizing status can sometimes drive away the very clients you're trying to attract.
I also explore three different forms of exclusivity—status, discretion, and expertise—and shares practical ways to make your marketing more appealing to affluent buyers regardless of where they live.
The big idea: Velvet Rope Marketing isn't uniquely American. But the way you communicate exclusivity needs to reflect the values of the people you're trying to reach.

The Secret to Being Comfortable Around Wealthy People Has Nothing to Do With Money
Ever walked into a room full of wealthy, successful people and suddenly felt the need to prove you belong?
You start talking too much. You mention your accomplishments. You agree with things you don't actually believe. And before you know it, you're acting like someone you barely recognize.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I share the story of two financial advisors who approach affluent prospects very differently—and why the less impressive-looking advisor is the one everyone wants to talk to.
You'll discover why genuine self-confidence is one of the most valuable assets you can bring into a relationship with affluent clients, along with six practical techniques to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin.
Learn how to stop putting wealthy people on pedestals, avoid the temptation to impress, handle unfamiliar conversations, disagree without becoming defensive, and develop the quiet confidence that makes genuine relationships possible.

Thu, 22 Oct 2026 - 18min - 550 - The Private Salon Strategy — How to Get Wealthy Prospects to Come to You
What if you could bring a dozen affluent prospects and influential people together for an evening they'd genuinely enjoy—without making a single sales pitch?
Most professionals trying to attract wealthy clients spend their time attending networking events, joining expensive organizations, and hoping to meet the right people.
But there's another approach: Become the person who brings the right people together.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, Mark Satterfield tells the story of Caroline Mercer, an interior designer struggling to break into Charleston's affluent market, who discovers how hosting small, invitation-only gatherings can open doors that conventional marketing can't.
You'll discover how to use private salons as a Trojan Horse marketing strategy to create meaningful relationships with wealthy prospects and influential referral sources.
More importantly, you'll learn exactly how to organize one yourself, including:
How to choose a fascinating topic that attracts the right guests.Where to find speakers and co-hosts who already have affluent connections. How to create personal invitations people actually want to accept. How to structure a memorable 90-minute gathering without making a sales pitch. How to follow up and turn new acquaintances into lasting relationships and potential clients. You don't need a huge network, an extravagant venue, or an enormous budget to get started.
The big idea: Stop trying to get invited into rooms full of affluent people. Create a room they'll want to enter.

Wed, 21 Oct 2026 - 17min - 549 - The Right 200 People
You can't sell to someone who doesn't know you exist. But does that mean you need more followers, more views and a bigger audience?
Not necessarily.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Graham Ellison, a craftsman who restores classic wooden yachts. When the referral sources that kept his shop busy for years suddenly disappear, Graham turns to social media—and succeeds in getting thousands of people to notice him.
Unfortunately, they're mostly the wrong people.
Graham's experience reveals an important distinction for anyone trying to attract affluent clients: you don't necessarily need more attention. You need more attention from the people who matter.
You'll discover the difference between buyer attention, introducer attention and authority attention, plus a practical exercise I call your Attention 200—the relatively small group of people whose awareness of you could have an outsized impact on your business.
Because the goal isn't necessarily to become famous.
It's to become difficult to ignore inside the world where your best prospects already live.

Tue, 20 Oct 2026 - 15min - 548 - THE AFFLUENT MARKET ISN’T A MARKET
A retired Fortune 500 executive, a tech founder who just sold a company, a professional athlete and a wealthy widow may have similar net worths—but almost nothing else about the way you market to them is necessarily the same.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain why choosing the right affluent niche can make everything from your positioning and advertising to referrals and lead generation dramatically easier.
You’ll discover the five questions I’d use to evaluate an affluent niche, why access can matter more than market size, how to identify the trigger events that create buying opportunities, and why your best niche may already be hiding inside your existing client base.
Because the goal isn’t simply to find people with money.

Mon, 19 Oct 2026 - 08min - 547 - Nobody Wants What You Do: They Want the Problem Gone
Here's something most professionals selling to affluent clients misunderstand: Wealthy people aren't necessarily impressed by what you sell. They're interested in what you can make go away.
An exceptional architect, financial advisor, physician, or luxury service provider isn't particularly difficult for someone with money to find. So why should they choose you?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Jonathan Mercer, an affluent homeowner whose experience reveals the difference between selling a service and solving a problem that actually matters.
You'll discover why emphasizing your credentials, features, and capabilities often misses the mark, how to uncover the deeper problems affluent clients are willing to pay to eliminate, and how to reposition your business around outcomes rather than services.
You'll also learn a simple way to evaluate your own marketing and identify what your ideal clients are really buying.
The big idea: Stop telling affluent prospects how good you are at what you do. Start showing them why their lives will be better because of what you do.

Fri, 16 Oct 2026 - 09min - 546 - Marketing The Concierge Medical Practice
Why does someone who could have afforded concierge medicine for years suddenly decide to join a practice now?
That question may be considerably more valuable than simply defining your ideal patient.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of David Emmerson, a successful 61-year-old business owner who isn't looking for a new doctor—until one frustrating Tuesday morning causes him to reconsider the way he's been receiving healthcare.
You'll discover why marketing the features of concierge medicine may not be enough, how to uncover the circumstances that cause prospective patients to start looking for an alternative, and a simple question you can ask new patients that could give you months of highly relevant marketing ideas.
We'll also look at how patient frustrations, physician retirement, life changes, convenience, health priorities and other circumstances can become useful marketing topics—without resorting to fear-based medical marketing.
Because “How did you hear about us?” tells you where a new patient came from.
“Why now?” tells you why they moved.

Thu, 15 Oct 2026 - 11min - 545 - How to Gain Access to Affluent Clients
How do you get access to affluent prospects when you don't move in their circles?
You may be starting in the wrong place.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Michael Brennan, a successful business owner who spends a year attending networking events, charity dinners and business organizations trying to meet larger, wealthier clients—with very little to show for it.
Then one lunch with a longtime client reveals something Michael had completely overlooked: he was already one relationship away from exactly the people he was trying to meet.
You'll discover how to uncover the hidden network inside your existing client base, why “Do you know anybody who needs what I do?” is usually a terrible referral question, what to say instead, and how to identify the handful of people who can provide access to an entire affluent community.
We'll also look at how to ask for introductions without making people uncomfortable, why creating a reason for an introduction can work better than asking for a referral, and what to do once somebody finally opens the door.
Because you may not need a bigger network.
You may need to understand the one you already have.

Wed, 14 Oct 2026 - 12min - 544 - The Question You Should Be Able to Answer in 10 Seconds—but Probably Can’t
There's one question many successful professionals have a surprisingly difficult time answering:
What problem do you solve?
Ask what they do and the answer comes easily. Wealth management. Architecture. Consulting. Interior design. Concierge medicine.
But those are services—not problems.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Richard Fallon, a successful advisor who thinks he knows exactly what he provides until one simple question forces him to look at his business from his client's perspective.
You'll discover how to separate what you do from why someone needs it, a simple exercise for uncovering the problems your best clients actually pay you to solve, and why your clients' own words may be more useful than the polished marketing language on your website.
Because your prospect shouldn't have to translate your service into a reason to care.

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 10min - 543 - THE CONFIDENCE GAP: Why Affluent Clients Need to Believe You Believe in Yourself
You can have the credentials, experience, expertise and results—and still undermine yourself in front of an affluent prospect without realizing you're doing it.
Maybe you defend your fee before anyone objects. You offer a less expensive alternative nobody asked for. You over-explain your recommendations. Or you become so eager to land the client that they can sense just how badly you want the business.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explore why self-belief plays such an important role in attracting affluent clients—and the subtle ways a lack of it can sabotage an otherwise excellent sales conversation.
You'll hear the story of Alexandra Reed, a highly accomplished landscape designer who discovers that her biggest obstacle isn't her talent, positioning or pricing. It's becoming comfortable occupying the position of authority she's asking her clients to give her.
We look at why affluent prospects often use confidence as a proxy for expertise, why you should stop defending your price before anyone questions it, why giving a clear recommendation is more powerful than hiding behind endless options, and why one of the most important changes you can make is replacing “I hope they hire me” with “Are we right for each other?”
Self-belief doesn't mean arrogance, swagger or pretending to know something you don't. It means you've done the work, developed the expertise, accumulated the evidence—and finally allowed yourself to believe it.
Because when someone is considering writing you a very large check, they're deciding whether they believe in you.
It's considerably easier for them to do that when you already do.

Mon, 12 Oct 2026 - 09min - 542 - The Art of Working a Room: How to Turn Introductions Into Relationships
Most people walk into a networking event with the wrong objective: meet as many people as possible.
That can leave you with 20 business cards and absolutely nothing else.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Richard Hale, an advisor who discovered that the real skill in working a room isn't introducing yourself to everyone. It's creating a small number of conversations people actually remember.
You'll learn why three good conversations can be more valuable than 30 introductions, the questions that get people beyond cocktail-party small talk, how to tell whether a group is open to being approached, why you should leave a good conversation before it runs out of steam, and what to do the next morning so the relationship doesn't disappear.
Because particularly when you're trying to attract affluent clients, the goal isn't to collect contacts.
It's to earn the next conversation.

Fri, 09 Oct 2026 - 08min - 541 - Luxury Isn’t Defined By Price
What actually makes a service luxurious?
It’s tempting to think luxury means higher prices, beautiful surroundings, premium gifts and expensive finishing touches. But affluent clients may define luxury very differently.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you’ll meet Jonathan Bell, who manages second and third homes for wealthy families, and Dr. Elena Marlowe, who has created a beautiful private dental practice. Both discover that looking luxurious and delivering a luxury experience aren’t necessarily the same thing.
We’ll explore what affluent clients may really be paying a premium for: less waiting, less uncertainty, fewer things to manage, greater access, better judgment and the confidence that someone capable is paying attention.
And there’s one thing I think virtually every business serving affluent clients should examine: friction. Every unnecessary step, delay, repeated question or moment of confusion can quietly undermine the premium experience you’re trying to create.
Because luxury isn’t always about giving clients more.
Sometimes the greatest luxury is requiring less from them.

Thu, 08 Oct 2026 - 12min - 540 - The Velvet Rope Effect: Why Being Selective Can Make Affluent Clients Want You More
In 1977, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened Studio 54 in Manhattan—and one of the most famous parts of the club wasn't the dance floor.
It was the door.
Getting through Studio 54's velvet rope became part of the experience. Money alone didn't guarantee admission, and the people who made it inside felt they'd gained access to something not everyone could simply buy.
There's an interesting lesson here for anyone selling an expensive service.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I look at the history of Studio 54 and what its legendary door policy can teach us about selectivity, positioning and affluent-client psychology.
You'll discover why being willing to work with everybody can weaken your positioning, how to create legitimate qualification standards without manufacturing fake exclusivity, and why the most powerful message may not be “Here's why you should hire us,” but rather “Let's first determine whether we're right for each other.”
Because the objective isn't to make yourself difficult to hire.
It's to make it clear that money alone doesn't necessarily make someone the right client.

Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 12min - 539 - The Five-Second Website Test
Your website can be beautiful, sophisticated and expensive—and still fail one of the most basic jobs it's supposed to do:
Tell the right prospect what you do and whether it's relevant to them.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Vanessa Hart, whose $28,000 website looks terrific but leaves visitors guessing about what her company actually does.
The solution isn't another redesign. It's a remarkably simple five-second test you can try on your own website today.
You'll learn why sophisticated service businesses often sacrifice clarity in an attempt to sound more upscale, the two questions to ask when testing your homepage, why asking someone whether they “like” your website tells you very little, and how to make your positioning clearer without making your marketing feel unsophisticated.
Because your prospect doesn't need to understand everything about your business in five seconds.
But the right prospect should quickly recognize: “This is relevant to me.”

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 05min - 538 - The Activity Trap: Turn Random Marketing Into a System That Actually Produces Clients
You can have a website, post regularly on social media, send emails, attend events, ask for referrals—and still not have a marketing system.
You simply have a lot of marketing activities.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain the difference and why it matters, particularly if you're trying to attract affluent clients.
Through the stories of two very different businesses, I'll show you how a good marketing system moves a prospect through five important stages:
Attention. Relevance. Credibility. Differentiation. Follow-up.
You'll see how each piece of your marketing should have a specific job, why every marketing tactic doesn't need to produce an immediate client, and what needs to happen between the moment someone first discovers you and the moment they're finally ready to have a conversation.
Because you may not need another social media platform, advertising campaign or clever marketing tactic.
You may simply need the things you're already doing to start working together.

Mon, 05 Oct 2026 - 13min - 537 - The Riches Aren't Always in the Niches
Professional athletes. Family offices. Tech founders. Luxury homeowners. Private-equity executives.
It's easy to look at an affluent market and think: There's a lot of money there. I should go after it.
But the existence of money doesn't necessarily mean there's an opportunity for you.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the stories of two professionals who approach niche selection very differently—and explain five things I'd consider before committing your marketing to any affluent audience.
You'll learn why the problem you solve matters more than the wealth of the market, why access can be more valuable than market size, how your existing experience can give you an advantage in an unexpected niche, and one deceptively simple question I'd ask before deciding to spend the next several years pursuing a particular group of clients.
Because the best affluent niche isn't necessarily the richest one.
It's the one where you have the best opportunity to become particularly relevant and valuable.

In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, we look at how the environment surrounding a purchase can change the way someone experiences what you’re selling. The lesson comes from “The Secret Room”—and the realization that sometimes the most effective selling happens when prospects become curious, engaged and eager to discover what comes next.
For professionals serving affluent clients, there’s an important idea here: the sales process itself is part of your product. The way prospects are welcomed, what you reveal and when you reveal it, the sense of discovery you create, and even the small details surrounding the interaction can influence how valuable and distinctive your service feels.
You’ll discover how to borrow some of these principles for your own business without resorting to gimmicks—creating a buying experience that feels personal, memorable and perhaps even a little exclusive.
Because affluent prospects have experienced plenty of sales pitches.
What they remember are experiences.

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 07min - 535 - Proof Before Promises: How to Make Prospects Believe You Know What You’re Doing
Why should an affluent prospect believe you know what you’re doing?
It’s not enough to get their attention. It’s not even enough to talk about something they care about. At some point, every prospective client has to answer another question:
“Why should I believe you?”
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the stories of Sophie Laurent, an estate-jewelry advisor helping a wealthy family understand a collection inherited over generations, and Graham Holloway, a marine-insurance specialist who works with owners of multimillion-dollar yachts.
Both discover an important distinction: telling people you’re an expert and allowing them to see your expertise are two very different things.
We’ll look at how client stories, specific examples, observations, experience and the way you talk about a problem can establish credibility without constantly telling people how accomplished you are. I’ll also give you a simple exercise for creating your own “credibility library”—15 potential pieces of content that demonstrate what you know rather than merely claiming you know it.
Because credentials may get you considered. But demonstrating your judgment is often what gets you chosen.

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 12min - 534 - The Format Trap: Should Your Lead Magnet Be a PDF, Video or Webinar?
Should your lead magnet be a PDF, a video or a webinar?
It’s a question I hear all the time. But I think it starts in the wrong place. Because the format of your lead magnet matters considerably less than the subject and the promise behind it.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Andrew Callahan, a private aviation advisor who creates a beautifully designed 34-page guide, then a video, then a webinar—and gets disappointing results from all three.
The problem isn't the format. None of them gives the right prospect a compelling enough reason to pay attention.
We’ll look at the advantages and disadvantages of PDFs, videos and webinars, when each makes the most sense, and a simple three-question test for deciding what your lead magnet should actually be about.
You’ll also discover how the three formats can work together: a low-friction PDF to generate initial interest, video to demonstrate your expertise and personality, and a webinar to move the most interested prospects further toward a conversation.
Because nobody downloads something simply because they’re excited to receive another PDF. They download it because the title promises an answer they want.

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 11min - 533 - The Waiting Game
Someone tells you they’re interested—but the timing isn’t right. What should you do next?
Most businesses make one of two choices: they disappear and hope the prospect eventually comes back, or they start sending a series of increasingly awkward “just checking in” emails.
There’s a much better approach.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Laura Bennett, a specialist who designs private wine cellars for serious collectors. When a potentially lucrative project gets postponed, Laura discovers that effective follow-up isn’t about repeatedly asking prospects whether they’re ready to buy. It’s about giving them a reason to be glad they’re still hearing from you.
We’ll look at what you can actually send during that waiting period—including useful ideas, articles, case studies and observations that demonstrate your judgment—as well as how to use what prospects have already told you to make your follow-up far more relevant.
Because the objective isn’t simply to stay top-of-mind. It’s to become more valuable while they wait.

Mon, 28 Sep 2026 - 08min - 532 - The Magnet Effect: Stop Chasing Wealthy Clients. Give Them a Reason to Come to You.
What If You Created the Room You Keep Trying to Get Invited Into?
Can hosting a dinner for 10 people really produce more affluent business than sponsoring an event attended by 600?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Andrew Kellerman, a successful insurance advisor who spends nearly two years trying to get himself into the rooms where wealthy prospects and their advisors gather.
He attends conferences. He sponsors charity events. He networks. And eventually he spends $18,000 on an event sponsorship that gives him plenty of visibility—and almost nothing in the way of new business.
Then Andrew meets Claire Beaumont, a former luxury hospitality executive who introduces him to a very different approach: stop trying so hard to get invited into the right rooms and consider creating one yourself.
You'll discover why Andrew's intimate dinner for 12 works better than his conference sponsorship, why making his second event bigger actually makes it less effective, and why one of the most valuable people he meets never becomes a client at all.
We'll also look at practical ways to use small dinners, salons, sponsorships and events to attract affluent clients—including how to choose whom to invite, what to talk about, how to make the gathering valuable without turning it into a sales presentation, and why access may be considerably more valuable than exposure.
If you're trying to build relationships with affluent prospects and the people who influence them, this episode may change the way you think about events entirely.

Fri, 25 Sep 2026 - 14min - 531 - How Much Should I Be Spending to Acquire a New Client?
Is spending $10,000 to acquire one new client outrageously expensive—or an absolute bargain?
It depends on what that client is actually worth.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Julian Mercer, a rare-book specialist who's horrified to discover he spent $14,600 acquiring a single client—until he looks at what happened next.
You'll also meet Celeste Armand, who places private household staff for wealthy families and believes most of her clients cost almost nothing to acquire. They don't.
Through their stories, we'll look at three practical numbers worth knowing: what a good client is actually worth, what you're really spending to acquire clients, and which marketing sources produce your most valuable clients.
Because the objective isn't necessarily to acquire clients as cheaply as possible.
It's to spend intelligently enough to acquire more of the clients you really want.

Thu, 24 Sep 2026 - 10min - 530 - How Much of Your Personality Should You Show in Your Marketing?
How much of yourself should prospective clients see before they decide to hire you?
Show too little personality and you can look polished, professional—and virtually indistinguishable from everyone else. Show too much, and your personality can begin to overshadow the expertise people are actually paying for.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Claire, a highly successful interior designer whose marketing reveals almost nothing about the fascinating person behind the work, and David, a luxury real estate professional facing almost the opposite problem.
Their stories reveal a useful middle ground: curated personality—showing the parts of yourself that help prospective clients understand how you think, what you believe and what it would actually be like to work with you.
You'll also learn a simple three-part exercise for deciding what belongs in your marketing, why personality becomes increasingly important when you're selling an expensive service, and why occasionally turning off the wrong prospect can actually help you attract the right one.

Wed, 23 Sep 2026 - 10min - 529 - Do I need a sales page or is my regular website enough?
Where you send a prospect after they become interested in you matters more than most people realize.
Sometimes the right destination is your main website, where they can explore your services, learn more about you and decide what interests them. Other times, giving them all those choices may actually make it less likely they'll take action.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explore the pros and cons of sending prospects to a general website versus a dedicated sales page—and explain why I think the right answer depends largely on what you already know about what that prospect wants.
I'll also show you how I use two different calls to action—MORE and CONFIDENCE—to demonstrate the strategy in my own marketing.
The key idea: The more specific the prospect's interest, the more focused the destination should be.

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 09min - 528 - How Do You Sell an Expensive Service Without Sounding Salesy?
The more expensive your service becomes, the less your prospective clients want to feel like they're being sold.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Rebecca Sloan, an executive search consultant trying to land a $125,000 engagement with the owner of a multigenerational family business—until he finally tells her, “Please stop trying to close me.”
What happens next illustrates an important lesson about selling high-value services: your job isn't necessarily to convince someone to say yes. It's to help them make a confident decision.
You'll discover three practical ways to do that, including how to uncover what's really preventing a prospect from moving forward, demonstrate your expertise without bragging, and create urgency without resorting to sales pressure.

Mon, 21 Sep 2026 - 13min - 527 - The Podcast I Wanted to Listen To—but Couldn’t Find
You probably don’t need another marketing podcast.
Especially if listening to one simply leaves you with 14 more things you’re supposed to be doing.
In this slightly different episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain why I created the podcast, why I chose to build it around stories rather than interviews, and what I believe you should get in return for the 15 or 20 minutes you spend listening.
The podcast is built specifically for professionals who sell expensive services and want to attract more affluent clients. It’s not about accumulating thousands of leads, being everywhere on social media or turning yourself into a full-time marketer.
It’s about attracting more of the right people.
More importantly, every episode is designed around a simple promise: you should walk away with at least one idea you can actually use. Something that might help you attract a better client, improve a sales conversation, generate more referrals, strengthen your positioning or stop wasting time on marketing that isn’t producing business.
If you’ve ever wondered why conventional marketing advice doesn’t always work particularly well when you’re selling high-value services to affluent clients, this episode explains what The Velvet Rope Playbook is all about.

Fri, 18 Sep 2026 - 10min - 526 - Marketing Quicksand: How to Get New Clients Without Letting Marketing Take Over Your Life
Marketing has a way of becoming quicksand.
You start with a website and a few emails. Then somebody tells you that you need Instagram, LinkedIn, videos, a podcast, a newsletter, more content and half a dozen other things. Before long, you're spending so much time marketing your business that you barely have time to run it.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Samantha Delaney, a private jeweler who discovers that the answer isn't doing more marketing. It's creating a much simpler system.
You'll discover how to build your marketing around one useful idea, put that idea in front of the right people, and give them one logical next step. You'll also see how one piece of useful content can become a video, email, social post, podcast or article—without constantly having to invent something new.
If you're responsible for both getting new clients and actually delivering the service they're paying you for, this episode will show you how to stop getting sucked into marketing quicksand and create a system you can realistically maintain.

Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 10min - 525 - How do you get more referrals without constantly asking people for them?
Most professionals would love more referrals. What they don’t particularly enjoy is repeatedly asking their clients, “Do you know anyone you could introduce me to?”
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain a different approach: give your clients something specific to talk about.
You’ll discover why referrals are often triggered by timing and memory, how sharing useful ideas can make you easier to recommend, and why the goal is to have your name naturally come to mind when someone in your client’s circle mentions a problem you know how to solve.
The best referral strategy may not be asking more often. It may be becoming more memorable at exactly the right moment.

Wed, 16 Sep 2026 - 09min - 524 - What to Say When a Wealthy Prospect Tells You You're Too Expensive
What should you do when a prospect looks at your proposal and says, “That's too expensive”?
The instinct is usually to defend your price—explain your experience, list everything they're getting, or try harder to demonstrate your value. But that may be exactly the wrong response.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Nicholas Ferraro, a high-end landscape architect who encounters two wealthy prospects with the same objection—but for completely different reasons.
You'll discover why “too expensive” is often a symptom rather than the real objection, the question to ask before defending your price, and how takeaway selling can completely change the dynamic of a sales conversation.
You'll also learn why some price objections should be overcome—and why others may be telling you that this is a prospect you should happily allow to walk away.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 10min - 523 - How Do You Get Clients Who Have Never Heard of You?
What happens when you've built a successful business largely through referrals and relationships—but now you want to attract clients outside the circle of people who already know your name?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Victoria Bennett, a successful interior designer who spent 20 years building a thriving referral-based business in Washington, D.C. When she decides to expand into Palm Beach, she discovers that the reputation that made attracting clients relatively easy at home doesn't automatically travel with her.
You'll discover why simply getting more visibility isn't enough, how to create evidence that builds trust with people who've never met you, and a practical three-story strategy you can use to demonstrate your expertise rather than simply claim it.
If you want to expand into a new market, reach affluent prospects outside your existing network, or become known by people who don't yet know your name, this episode will show you where to start.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 09min - 522 - Why More Leads May Be the Last Thing You Need
What if your marketing is working exactly as intended—more traffic, more inquiries, more sales calls—and it's actually making your business worse?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Ethan Caldwell, a successful private aviation broker who discovers that generating more leads isn't the same thing as attracting better clients.
You'll learn why marketing to affluent prospects sometimes needs to repel as well as attract, how to determine whether your positioning sounds exactly like your competitors, and a simple way to make your marketing start qualifying prospects before you ever speak with them.
If you sell a premium service, the goal isn't necessarily more attention. It's having more of the right people arrive already understanding why they should be talking to you.

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 08min - 521 - How to Follow Up Without Becoming a Pain in the Ass
How often should you follow up with a prospective client without becoming annoying?
The answer may have less to do with how frequently you follow up and much more to do with what happens when you do.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, you'll meet Jonathan Mercer, a successful consultant who nearly loses a $180,000 engagement by doing what thousands of professionals do every day: repeatedly “checking in.”
You'll discover a simple follow-up rule that can help you remain in front of valuable prospects without chasing them, why interest and readiness aren't the same thing, and how the right follow-up can demonstrate your expertise before someone ever becomes a client.

Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 08min - 520 - Stop Looking for Clients in the Wrong Places
If you want more affluent clients, the answer may not be doing more marketing. It may be focusing your effort in places where trust already exists.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain why wealthy prospects frequently choose professionals they already know, people recommended by someone they trust, or recognized experts whose reputation reaches them before the sales conversation begins.
You’ll discover why broad visibility doesn’t always produce high-quality clients, how to identify the people and relationships that can place you inside the right circles, and why becoming easier to recommend may be far more valuable than simply trying to reach more strangers.
Because the question isn’t only, “Where can I find more prospects?”
It’s also, “Where are the people most likely to trust me already looking—and who do they already listen to?”

Should you put your prices on your website?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I explain why publishing your price can either help qualify the right prospects—or cause someone to walk away before they understand what they’re actually getting.
You’ll learn when price transparency makes sense, when it can work against you, and how to give people enough context to evaluate your fee intelligently.
Because sometimes your price isn’t too high.

Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 09min - 518 - The Hidden Job of Instagram That Most Businesses Completely Miss
You may be thinking about Instagram all wrong.
For professionals trying to attract affluent clients, Instagram isn’t simply a place to post content, accumulate followers or hope that someone sees a Reel and immediately becomes a client.
Increasingly, Instagram is a credibility platform.
Someone hears your name from a friend, colleague or trusted advisor. Before they ever contact you, they look you up. They visit your website. They check LinkedIn. And very often, they take a quick look at Instagram.
They may never follow you. They may never like a post. You may never know they were there.
But they’re forming an opinion.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, Mark Satterfield explains the often-overlooked role Instagram plays in the affluent marketing funnel through the stories of two successful business owners who believe Instagram doesn’t matter because their clients “aren’t on Instagram.”
You’ll discover why that assumption misses the point, what prospective clients may really be looking for when they check your social presence, and how your Instagram content can either reinforce a personal referral—or quietly undermine it.
You’ll also learn a simple way to evaluate your own digital presence by looking at your website, Instagram, LinkedIn and other online platforms through the eyes of someone who has just been told, “You really ought to talk to this person.”
Because the real question isn’t whether your best prospects follow you on Instagram.
It’s what they think about you when they check you out.

Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 11min - 517 - How to Sell Without Feeling Like You're Selling
If you hate the idea of selling, you're not alone. I don't particularly like sales either—and that's one of the reasons I became a marketer.
Because when your marketing does its job properly, there should be considerably less left to sell.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Daniel Mercer, an expert at helping wealthy families acquire investment land who decides he needs to become a better closer. Unfortunately, the sales techniques he learns have exactly the opposite effect on an affluent prospect with a finely tuned radar for being sold.
We'll look at a very different approach: creating a sequence of marketing experiences that gets someone's attention, demonstrates your expertise, establishes trust, makes your differences clear and stays in touch until they're ready to move forward.
You'll also discover why this approach is particularly effective with affluent prospects, who are constantly being approached by people who want something from them.
The objective isn't to become better at convincing people.
It's to create marketing that does enough of the selling beforehand that doing business with you eventually feels like their idea.

Mon, 07 Sep 2026 - 11min - 516 - Why Wealthy People Ask Other Wealthy People Who to Hire
If you want more affluent clients, it may be more valuable to stop asking only, “How do I reach more wealthy people?”and start asking:
“How do I become the person people who already know wealthy people think of first?”
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, we look at the overlapping circles of trust that surround affluent clients—and why the relationships you build with attorneys, accountants, advisors, specialists and other trusted professionals can become one of your most valuable sources of new business.
You’ll discover why a recommendation from someone inside an affluent prospect’s world carries so much weight, why one excellent client can become an introduction to an entire network, and what it takes to become genuinely easy to recommend.
But there’s an important distinction. You can’t manufacture peer validation simply by asking successful clients for names. A recommendation has to feel deserved. When someone introduces you, they’re placing part of their own judgment and reputation on the line.
That means your work must be memorable, your point of distinction must be clear, and the experience you deliver must justify the confidence someone places in you.
Because the goal isn’t to spend your entire career searching for affluent prospects.
It’s to become the person affluent prospects are sent to when the right need arises.

Fri, 04 Sep 2026 - 12min - 515 - Stop Letting New Business Slip Through Your Fingers
Most businesses spend an enormous amount of time and money trying to attract new prospects while overlooking something potentially far more valuable: the people who already showed interest but never took the next step.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Caroline, the owner of a successful interior design firm who was convinced she needed more leads. What she actually had was a “what happened to everybody?” problem.
You'll discover why someone who doesn't buy immediately hasn't necessarily rejected you, why follow-up becomes even more important when you're selling expensive services, and how to reconnect with interested prospects without chasing, pestering or sounding desperate.
Before you spend another dollar trying to attract strangers, it might be worth looking at the prospects you've already paid—in time, effort or money—to find.
Because sometimes the fastest way to get your next client isn't finding someone new. It's being there a second time for someone who was already interested.

If you’re trying to attract affluent clients, making your marketing sound more sophisticated may actually be making it less effective. Your prospects shouldn’t have to work to understand what you do, who you help, or why your expertise matters to them.
In this episode, I share the story of a successful consultant with a beautiful, expensive website that somehow made his value harder to understand. We’ll look at why clarity is particularly important when marketing high-value services, how to recognize when your messaging has become unnecessarily complicated, and a simple test you can use to make your own marketing more compelling.
Because the goal isn’t to make affluent prospects think, “This person sounds impressive.” It’s to make them think, “This person understands exactly what I’m dealing with.”
And if you're looking at your own marketing and wondering whether you're communicating your value as clearly and persuasively as you could be, that's exactly the kind of thing I work on with clients personally.
Sometimes we need to look at your entire client attraction system. Other times, there's one particular piece—your positioning, your website, your offer, your follow-up, or simply the way you're explaining what you do—that's holding everything else back.
If you'd like me to look at your business with you and help identify what would make the biggest difference, visit https://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session for information about working with me one-on-one.

Mon, 31 Aug 2026 - 08min - 511 - What People REALLY Pay Premium Prices For
Why are some professionals able to charge substantially more than equally qualified competitors? Often, it's because they're not selling the service itself. They're selling what the service makes possible.
Today, I'll show you a simple messaging exercise: "People don't pay premium prices for ________. They pay premium prices for ________." You'll learn how to move beyond describing services, credentials, and deliverables and identify the deeper outcome affluent clients are actually willing to pay more to receive.
I'll also show you a powerful question to ask: What does your client get to stop worrying about once they hire you?The answer can help you uncover a far more compelling way to position your expertise, differentiate yourself from competitors, and justify premium fees.
If you'd like my help developing positioning and messaging that gives affluent prospects a compelling reason to choose you, visit https://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session and I'll send you information about working with me personally.

Fri, 28 Aug 2026 - 05min - 510 - What can a 60-year-old advertising idea teach us about attracting affluent clients today? Quite a lot.
Advertising legend Rosser Reeves popularized the Unique Selling Proposition—the idea that your marketing should give people one compelling reason to choose you. That's particularly important with affluent prospects because they usually have plenty of qualified professionals to choose from.
Today I’m showing you how to apply Reeves' thinking to modern affluent marketing, why generic claims about experience and exceptional service aren't enough, and how to identify the one valuable idea you want prospective clients to associate with your name. I also explain why repeating that central message—in different stories, videos and examples—is far more powerful than constantly reinventing your marketing.
If you'd like help developing the message that gives affluent prospects a compelling reason to choose you, comment COACH or visit https://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session for information about working with me personally.
Thu, 27 Aug 2026 - 06min - 509 - The 2 Stories That Give Affluent Clients a Reason to Choose You.
If you want to attract more affluent clients, there are two types of stories that can make your marketing considerably more persuasive.
Today , I explain The Cost of a Cheap Fix Story—how to demonstrate the hidden cost of choosing the wrong provider—and The Peer Validation Story—how to show affluent prospects that you've successfully helped people whose circumstances are similar to theirs.
Affluent clients usually have plenty of qualified professionals to choose from. These stories address two of the biggest factors in that decision: risk and relevance. One helps prospects understand why the cheapest or easiest solution can ultimately become the most expensive. The other gives them confidence that you understand people like them and the problems they face.
If you'd like help uncovering and developing the stories that will make your marketing more compelling to affluent prospects, visit https://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session and I'll send you information about working with me personally.

Wed, 26 Aug 2026 - 08min - 508 - Why Someone Worth $20 Million Might Still Tell You You're Too Expensive
A wealthy prospect can easily afford what you're selling—and still think you're charging too much.
That's because wealth and willingness to pay are two entirely different things. Net worth tells you what someone canspend. It tells you very little about what they believe something is worth.
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Douglas Whitmore, a successful entrepreneur worth more than $20 million, and Peter Langston, a vintage automobile expert who couldn't understand why Douglas balked at his $85,000 fee.
The problem wasn't Douglas's ability to pay. It was Peter's failure to make the value of his expertise unmistakable.
You'll discover why affluent clients can be surprisingly price-conscious, why premium pricing requires more than simply targeting people with money, and how to uncover the value in your expertise that may be obvious to you—but completely invisible to your prospective clients.
Because when an affluent prospect says, “You're too expensive,” they may actually be telling you something very different: “I don't yet see why you're worth it.”

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 08min - 507 - Whoops! That Was a Waste of Marketing Dollars
When business slows down, the natural reaction is to start fixing things. A new website. More social media. Different messaging. A new CRM. Maybe an entirely new marketing strategy.
But what if most of your marketing is already working—and there's simply one weak link that's costing you clients?
In this episode of The Velvet Rope Playbook, I tell the story of Jonathan, a successful advisor who spent $42,000 trying to solve a marketing problem he didn't actually have. His experience illustrates a lesson that's particularly important for professionals selling high-value services: before you add more marketing, figure out exactly where your existing client-attraction process is breaking down.
I'll show you a simple way to examine the five things every business needs to turn strangers into clients—attention, interest, trust, desire and action—and identify the one area that deserves your attention.
Because sometimes the fastest way to grow isn't doing more. It's fixing the right thing.

Mon, 24 Aug 2026 - 07min - 506 - Can't Get in Front of Affluent Clients? Here's a Better Way In
If you're trying to attract more affluent clients, you may be looking in the wrong place. Instead of asking, "How do I meet more wealthy people?" ask a different question: "Who already has relationships with the wealthy people I want to meet?"
If you're an architect, that might be luxury real estate agents, interior designers or art advisors. If you're in healthcare, it might be wealth advisors, private clubs or luxury travel advisors. If you sell luxury products, it could be exotic car dealers, galleries or high-end real estate professionals. Different businesses, but they're serving many of the same people you want to reach.
But don't approach them asking to exchange referrals. That's immediately transactional. Instead, find a reason for them to be glad they know you. Introduce them to someone useful. Feature their expertise in one of your videos. Invite them to participate in a small event. Send them information that's genuinely valuable. Become useful before you ever ask them for anything.
Because a wealthy client might know three people who could hire you. Someone who serves wealthy clients may know 300. Become known and trusted by the right people, and eventually your name starts coming up in conversations you're not even in.
If you'd like my help identifying who you should become known by and how to develop those relationships, visit https://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session

Fri, 21 Aug 2026 - 10min - 505 - Why Successful Professionals Get Intimidated by Wealthy Clients
You can have years of experience, an impressive track record, and all the expertise necessary to serve affluent clients—and still find yourself questioning whether you really belong in the room with them.
That’s where imposter syndrome becomes more than a confidence problem. It becomes a marketing and sales problem.
In this episode, I explain how imposter syndrome can subtly change the way you communicate with wealthy prospects. You may over-explain, try too hard to establish your credentials, become overly accommodating, hesitate to challenge a prospect’s thinking, or even second-guess what you charge. None of these behaviors necessarily look like insecurity, but they can undermine the very thing affluent clients are looking for: confidence in your judgment.
I’ll show you why you don’t need to match a wealthy prospect’s financial status to earn their respect, why trying to impress them can actually work against you, and a simple exercise you can use before your next affluent prospect meeting to shift your attention away from yourself and back to the value you bring to the conversation.
If you already have the expertise to serve wealthy clients but sometimes question whether you truly belong in their world, my Unshakable Inner Confidence program can help you become far more comfortable engaging wealthy prospects, navigating conversations and social situations, and presenting yourself as the confident advisor they expect.

Wed, 19 Aug 2026 - 07min - 503 - How to Write Headlines That Make People Stop and Pay Attention
Why do some headlines instantly grab your attention while others disappear into the background?
Today, I break down what some of the most legendary advertising headlines have in common and reveal the psychological triggers that make people stop, pay attention, and want to know more. More importantly, I’ll show you how to apply those same principles to the headlines, email subject lines, YouTube titles, social media posts, and marketing messages you’re creating for your own business.
You’ll learn how curiosity, specificity, self-interest, loss aversion, and the unexpected can dramatically change the way people respond to your message. I’ll also give you a simple exercise you can use to generate multiple headline ideas for virtually anything you’re selling—and show you how AI can help you apply these proven direct-response principles without making your marketing sound generic or artificial.
A great headline doesn’t have to make the sale. It simply has to earn the next 10 seconds of attention. And in a marketplace where your prospects are being bombarded with messages all day long, those 10 seconds can be enormously valuable.
If you’d like help creating the positioning, messaging, and marketing system that turns that attention into affluent clients, comment COACH or visithttps://www.getwealthyclients.com/private-strategy-session and I’ll send you information about working with me personally.

Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 11min - 502 - Are We Still Fascinated by the Rich?
At dinner the other night the question came up…Are people as fascinated with the rich as they were in the 1980s? I think they are. They're just fascinated by different things.
In the 1980s, if you wanted to signal success, you bought the biggest house, the fastest car, or the watch with the biggest logo. Success was about being seen. Today, many of the wealthiest people intentionally avoid that kind of attention because showing off isn't nearly as impressive as it once was.
Instead, people have become fascinated by something else. They want to know how successful people think. They read biographies, listen to podcasts, follow entrepreneurs, and study the habits of top performers. The curiosity has shifted from what they own to how they make decisions.
Here's something you can do this week that reflects that shift. Instead of posting another testimonial or announcing another achievement, share one decision you've made in your business that turned out to be the right one. Explain why you made it, what you learned, and how that lesson could help someone else avoid the same mistake.
People don't just buy expertise. They buy judgment. Every time you demonstrate how you think, you're giving prospective clients a preview of what it's would be like to work with you. That's far more compelling than simply telling them you're experienced.
If you become known for the quality of your thinking instead of the size of your success, you'll attract exactly the kind of clients who value good judgment over flashy marketing.
If you're fascinated by how affluent people think, make sure you pick up a copy of my Amazon #1 bestseller, The Gilded Revival. It's not a book about becoming wealthy. It's a book about understanding the mindset of today's affluent consumer so you can build a business that naturally attracts them.

Mon, 17 Aug 2026 - 08min - 501 - The Story Play: Why Narrative Closes What Numbers Never Can
In the world of ultra-high-net-worth clients, persuasion doesn’t come from pressure.
It comes from narrative.
In this episode, we dive into the legend of Declan “Two Rings” Moretti—a Palm Beach fixer whose stories sell more than stats ever could. From million-dollar art deals to whispered legends, Declan understands something most professionals miss:
The wealthy don’t buy products.
They buy meaning.
They buy myth.
They buy the feeling of being in on something special.
We unpack:
Why storytelling works better than sales pitches with affluent clientsHow to turn features into emotional, high-status narrativesThe art of creating mystique and allure without oversellingWhat makes a story irresistible in luxury marketsHow you can apply Declan’s methods—even if you’re not dealing in FragonardsWhether you’re a consultant, advisor, or high-end service provider, this episode shows you how to sell like the elite do—quietly, elegantly, and with a story that moves markets.

Fri, 14 Aug 2026 - 04min - 500 - How Do You Change How The Market Perceives You?
How do you change the way the market perceives you—especially if you've spent years serving middle-market clients and now want to attract more affluent clients?
Simply calling yourself “luxury,” raising your prices, or redesigning your website probably isn't enough. People change their perception when they begin seeing enough new evidence to put you into a different category.
Today, I explain practical ways to reposition yourself and your business, including how to create a flagship offering, use strategic “credential projects,” change the professional circles in which people encounter you, eliminate marketing that reinforces your old positioning, and develop a point of distinction that makes you easier to remember and refer.
And becoming known for something specific does NOT mean you have to limit everything you do. There’s a big difference between narrowing your services and narrowing what you're known for. Your point of distinction can become the front door that leads affluent clients into a much broader range of complementary services.

Thu, 13 Aug 2026 - 07min - 499 - How to Use Curiosity to Make Your Marketing More Engaging
Why do some people immediately capture your attention while others—despite having something worthwhile to say—lose you almost instantly?
The answer often comes down to curiosity.
Curiosity creates engagement. It makes people lean in, pay attention and want to know what comes next. And that principle applies whether you're having a conversation, giving a presentation, writing an email, creating a video, recording a podcast or trying to attract a prospective client.
In this episode, I share a simple way to create what I call a "curiosity gap"—the space between what someone already knows and what they suddenly want to know. You'll discover several questions you can ask yourself to uncover more compelling ideas, how specificity can make a story almost impossible to ignore, and a simple two-sentence test you can use to determine whether your message is actually engaging.
Because getting attention isn't necessarily about being louder, more outrageous or more promotional. Sometimes you simply need to give people a reason to wonder, "Wait…what does he mean by that?"
And if you'd like help creating messaging that gets the attention of the affluent clients you want to attract, I can help. In less than an hour working together, we can develop messaging specifically for your business that's compelling, curiosity-driven and designed to make the right prospects want to know more about you and what you do.

Most professionals think video is only for attracting new clients.
But one of the smartest marketing ideas I've seen recently came from my hip replacement surgeon, Dr. Brekke at Duke Regional.
After I scheduled surgery, I began receiving a series of simple, helpful videos explaining what to expect before surgery, how to prepare, what recovery would look like, and how to stay motivated.
Those videos weren't selling me.
They were reinforcing trust.
In this video, I explain why every professional—from attorneys and financial advisors to physicians, consultants, and accountants—should consider creating an automated video sequence that educates, reassures, and builds confidence after someone becomes a client.
These simple videos reduce uncertainty, answer common questions, strengthen relationships, and generate more referrals without requiring ongoing effort.

Do you need to be wealthy before you can attract wealthy clients?
It's one of the most common limiting beliefs I hear from professionals, consultants, advisors, attorneys, accountants, architects, financial advisors, and business owners.
The truth is that affluent clients aren't looking for someone with a bigger house or a more expensive lifestyle. They're looking for someone who understands their world, solves meaningful problems, and inspires confidence.

Neither does having a beautiful website.
The businesses that consistently attract affluent clients understand there are only two levers that matter: traffic and conversion. If either one is weak, your marketing leaks opportunities every day.
In this video, I explain the simple "bucket with two holes" framework I use to diagnose why marketing underperforms and how improving both visibility and conversion can dramatically increase your results.

Thu, 06 Aug 2026 - 07min - 494 - Why More Marketing Isn't Getting You More Clients
Why do some businesses seem to attract affluent clients effortlessly while others struggle despite having great websites, active social media, and plenty of visibility?
The answer is simple: visibility creates awareness, but trust creates appointments.

You'll learn:
Why awareness alone rarely converts affluent prospects. The difference between marketing activities and a true marketing system. Why referrals often fail after someone visits your website. How every piece of your marketing should work together to build trust and reduce uncertainty. The marketing approach that positions you as the obvious choice instead of just another option. If you're a financial advisor, attorney, architect, consultant, physician, luxury real estate professional, or other expert serving affluent clients, this video will help you rethink how your marketing should actually work.
