Wax Episodic | Obsessive TV Talk with Jason Cabassi

Here’s our episode on the Lanterns finale, a series that ended up carrying more weight with all of us than I think we realized it would. Hope you enjoy our take on it.

And huge thanks to all of you for following along with us! We really appreciate you guys. If there’s a season 2, we’ll be back, and we’ll probably jump on and talk about Man of Tomorrow — the upcoming Superman movie featuring the next appearance of John Stewart — when it comes out next July.

Contest

Big congrats to the winners of our Casting Light Oath contest (listen to find out who)! They’ll each win their choice of a Lanterns tribute poster, illustrated by the one and only Kirk Manley. Check out those and a bunch of other of his illustrations at https://www.instagram.com/batmankm/

Welcome to Widow’s Bay everybody! Karen and I are overjoyed that so many of you expressed interest in us covering this. And what a pleasure to be immersing ourselves in the world of this wonderfully funny, smart, creepy, kooky, multiple Emmy-winning series.

This episode in particular won Emmys for best writing and directing, and it shows. This is one of those pilots that just nails it, hooking you in right away. And Matthew Rhys’ performance in particular is brilliant. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the podcast as Karen and I talk it out!

They just keep getting better and better. Such a hard-hitting, engaging episode this week, with perspective on Hal’s past and his relationship with his father, John reckoning with a more compassionate version of Hal, and their journey to a surreal other world. We can’t wait to see how this wraps up.

Wow, this slow-burn show picked up the pace in the second half of season three, and we’re totally digging it (pun!). Thrilling to see so many questions answered, and new ones raised, and to find out that the final season isn’t too far away — July 9, 2007! What’s next for Wax Episodic?

As I (Jason) mentioned on the podcast, the plan is to go on hiatus for awhile, and come back for the new HBO show, Lanterns, premiering August 16.

Lanterns is an upcoming new superhero/detective series, but I’m most excited about it because of where it’s airing (because HBO has been producing high-quality shows for years), and also the kick-ass bunch of creators and actors who are involved: Lanterns is headed up by Damon Lindelof (LOST, The Leftovers, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), and Tom King (Mister Miracle, The Vision), stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and co-stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle).

Premise: Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers. The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.

P.S. There’s a chance we’ll be back with a surprise or two before Lanterns. Either way keep us in your feed and we’ll talk to you soon!

Lanterns opens strong with an episode that manages to slip in a ton of expositional Green Lantern lore, an intriguing small town mystery, a bunch colorful characters all pushing against each other’s edges (with some fantastic actors playing them), all while asking some deeper questions about human nature, and even throwing in a few jokes that actually made us laugh. Yeah, we’re in!

We’re back for another new show! Yes, this show is about members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force whose members wear rings that give them powers (and we love that). But there’s a lot more about this series that has us intrigued. Like, why is it also apparently a gritty murder mystery set in rural Nebraska? And what does it mean that HBO, the king of prestige TV, picked it up, with three legendary writers at the helm: Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (LOST), and Tom King (The Vision)?

That’s more than enough to have us—Jason, Kirk, and Jim—super excited for Lanterns. Join us for a spoiler-lite introduction to the series, followed by a more detailed dive into the trailer that recently debuted at Comic-Con.

Surprise! Here’s Jason, Veronica, and Amelie with coverage of the first five episodes of Apple TV’s dystopian sci-fi mystery, Silo! Synopsis: In a dystopian future where a community exists in a giant silo hundreds of stories deep underground, ten thousand people live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. But some wonder if they’ve been lied to about why this silo was created and why they’re there.

The season really went out in grand fashion, with Innie and Outie Mark in a fierce argument with one another, a boisterous in-office marching band celebrating Mark’s completion of the Cold Harbor file, and a climactic battle between Drummond, Lorne of Mammalian’s Nurturable, and Mark, among other things. I mean, the unpredictable whimsy of this show is sublime :) And of course Karen and I had a blast talking it out, as always. Enjoy!

We sincerely thank all of you who followed along with us for Severance! Many of you guys have asked for coverage for years now, and I’m really glad we finally got around to it. So much heartbreak in this episode, between Gretchen breaking things off with Innie Dylan, Burt and Irving separating, Mark suffering and frustrated, and we even felt bad for Helena being oppressed by her father and Milchick being humiliated by Drummond (devour feculence, Drummond!). Interesting how with just a simple change of scenery, all the weirdness of this show just kind of disappears. Okie dokey, that’s it for Fallout season 2! We thought it was a great season finale, packed to the rads with answers (the Enclave is behind it all, and the President is one of them), more questions (have Hank and Steph been a thing for 200 years or what?), and as f$%ked up and funny as ever.

Thanks from all three of us to everyone for joining us for this series! What a freaking blast it is, right? It was so much fun to cover, and we especially appreciate those of you who wrote and called in (but we love all of ya).

I (Jason) hope you guys all stick around as Karen and I start with Apple TV’s Severance next week. We’re going back to the beginning and the plan is to cover the whole series, episode-by-episode, spoiler free. What is Severance, you ask? It’s a trippy workplace sci-fi thriller where employees surgically split their work and personal memories, creating two separate versions of themselves. It starts as a clever corporate experiment and develops into an unsettling mystery about identity, control, and rebellion. Smart, stylish, funny, and quietly disturbing, with an incredible cast — Adam Scott, Zach Cherry (!), Britt Lower, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. Hosted by Jason and Karen.

And if you’re looking for something else to dig into, highly recommend checking out any of the other shows this podcast covers. They are…

This show hitting close to home for anyone else? It’s another fantastic episode, with Steph’s escape from U.S.-occupied Canada, and a Cooper-Maximus-Thaddeus team-up. We just wish the real world would stop moving closer to Fallout and start seeing it as the warning it is.  PS We love you, Canada.

Post-apocalyptic protagonists must pursue perilous paths, proving problematic. Power plays like a profligate poker chip. Past promises provoke painful perceptions of once proud parentage. Pivotal protagonists probe personal principles, prioritize protection, but postpone peace. (With thanks to listener Collin Stilwell.)

If only Manousos had made it to New Mexico a few weeks earlier as he intended, then he and Carol might have been on the same page — but it was fun to see them argue about it and then ultimately get there, and we’re very much looking forward to season two to find out what happens next. Karen and I are thrilled to be joined by David — a huge Vince Gilligan fan, a Podcastica host, and Karen’s hubs — to talk it out!

Thanks everyone for joining us for this show! Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. We thought this ep was a deeper exploration of Carol’s character, and how she’s not only immune to the pod people virus, but also to allowing herself to feel happy even when everything is going well. Hmm, maybe that is why she’s immune to the virus (except Air Force One-guy doesn’t seem to have that problem). Anyway, this ep was a joy to watch, and to podcast on, and we hope you enjoy!

Wow, how messed up can this show get? Apparently way more, and it’s only episode two. This episode was stuffed to the gills with cool s#%t — gory action, irradiated mutant animals, the most adorable dog ever, and freakin' Michael “Ben Linus” Emerson — as Lucy explored the surface world and Maximus realized his dream of playing knight. Join Jason and Kasi as we talk it out!

Here we go: Fallout! This retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic extravaganza is a collision of humor and terror, charm and gore, propriety and depravity, mystery and adventure, and so much more. It’s smartly written, extravagantly produced, and we think the casting is perfect, with Ella Purnell as our uber-plucky hero, and Walton Goggins as our sassy, ghoulish foil.

I’m joined by Kasi and Wendy to talk out this first episode, which manages to be entertaining while dropping a ton of detail about this world. Join us as we talk it out!

It wasn’t as conclusive a season finale as we maybe wanted, but it was chock full of Alien: Earth greatness, and Jason, Randy, and Kara had a blast getting into all the details.

Thank you to all you guys who watched and listened along with us. It was a great time!

Such a mix of tones in this action-packed episode, at times simultaneously sad, sweet, disturbing, funny, and horrific. We were down with it and we’re very much looking forward to the finale next week. Listen in as we talk it out.

A quieter episode, but filled with fascinating angles to think about and explore, entertaining character dynamics, and most of all, rising tension on all fronts. This thing is clearly headed towards a major clusterf&@ck... Kara and Jason are happy to be joined this ep by Alien aficionado Archmaester Renny!

The wait is over — Alien: Earth has landed, and Noah Hawley’s first two episodes deliver everything we hoped for: suspense, grotesque alien terrors, strange new lifeforms, and a sharp look at how unchecked corporate ambition could shape our future — in a series that (at least so far) feels both classic and brand new. Join Jason, Randy, and Kara as we dig into “Neverland” and “Mr. October.”

We can’t lie, we’re excited for Pluribus, the upcoming series created by Breaking Bad showrunner Vince Gilligan. I (Jason) am equally thrilled to be covering that on this podcast after Alien: Earth, with my former Walking Dead ‘Cast co-host of 10 years, Karen! Happiness is contagious.

Join us in this quick episode for a rundown on everything we know so far about this series, plus some speculation on what it’s going to be about.
