  • 7 - 6. Symphony 65

This Loki of a symphony is such a trickster that Jeremy somehow thought it was another one, THAT's how devious it is. (Nothing to do with incompetence.) Anyway, A major is anything but Low Key in Haydn's hands... this one is proper weird - the reference points include Magritte, The Bed-Sitting Room and Blue Peter. Elsewhere Mozart gets a free pass for a change but another composer has his pass handed to him... and then gets torn a new pass. Sorry, arse.

  • 6 - 5. Symphony 41

This symphony is not so much Sturm und Drang as Terry and June, apparently, with Haydn guest starring as a joint of roast beef. Elsewhere he appears to have more rabbit than Sainsburys - have you ever seen rabbit in Sainsburys? - in other words, he's having more fun than you think... if you're lucky, you can too. AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FORGET THE DESCENDING SCALES, O BEST BELOVED

  • 5 - 4. Symphony 26 "Lamentatione"

Major = happy, minor = sad, right? WRONG. Or rather... it's complicated (and wrong). Jeremy gets lamentable in this one and discovers there's a lot going on under the Easter bonnet, including Haydn's most daring finale yet: a non-existent one. Warning: this episode has fewer jokes than normal, but then again it is in the minor key so everyone's a bit sad.

  • 4 - 3. Symphony 3

Or 'Baroque to the Future'. Where we're going we don't need fugues! But we're not there yet, and for this early stopover in the symphonic life of Haydn, JL has chosen a symphony full of counterpoint, canon and fugue; which he elects to explain using 1970s TV theme tunes only. Mozart gets bigged up in this one, surprisingly, although an attempt is made to outdo him (again using 1970s TV theme tunes only)

  • 3 - 2. Symphony 94 "Surprise"

One of Haydn's most famous - but for some reason there's an awful lot about Seinfeld in this one. Is that a surprise? It won't be for long. But there are many other surprises along the way. Warning: contains surprises.
