- 6428 - Whatever happened to Anthony Albanese's promise of transparency?
Mike discusses with Dennis Shanahan, The Australian Newspaper’s National Editor, the government's extensive use of non-disclosure agreements to silence organisations and conceal legislative plans.
Mr Shanahan notes how this practice contradicts Anthony Albanese's pledge of transparency and distorts the original intentions of the Rudd government - highlighting instances where industry groups were compelled to sign such agreements, limiting public discourse on critical issues like resources tax and environmental laws.
These agreements stifle dissent and disrupt negotiations, ultimately undermining bipartisanship and transparency in legislative processes, including recent proposals concerning religious freedom laws.

Even after seven years, these drivers still carry a 10% greater risk of crashing than those who borrow the family car, as per the research.

Mike is joined by Pauline Hanson, Senator for Queensland and the Leader of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party, in response to the Senate's rejection of her bill proposing a nationwide plebiscite on immigration levels.
Senator Hanson voices criticism, deeming it typical of the Senate's detachment from the sentiments of the Australian populace as major political factions disregard the clear preference of Australians for reduced immigration - according to public opinion polls and economic apprehensions.
Hanson adamantly advocated for a temporary cessation of immigration, underscoring the need to prioritise the welfare of Australian citizens above all else.

Adam Creighton, The Australian's Washington correspondent, joins Mike to discuss Donald Trump's critique of Kevin Rudd on British television, posing a significant issue for Australia if Trump is re-elected.
Australia's security dependence on the US will increase, making it unwise to appoint an ambassador disliked by the US president.
Anthony Albanese backed Rudd's bid for ambassadorship shortly after Trump announced his re-election bid in November 2022, when many doubted Trump's chances.
Despite this, Rudd, a former prime minister with extensive political and diplomatic ties and expertise in China, seemed a fitting choice for Australia's Labor government.

Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 6397 - Bar owner combats Sydney’s lack of late-night dining
Mike is joined by Raffaele Lombardi, creator of Australia's first negroni-centric bar, Bar Conte in Surry Hills, who introduced late-night dining after struggling to find quality restaurants open post 9pm in Sydney.
Inspired by Italian dining habits, patrons can now enjoy food till 11.15pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Lombardi's frustration with limited dining options led to this initiative, offering substantial dishes crafted by head chef Steven De Vecchi, with a focus on shared plates and hearty portions.
Bar Conte's evolution into a late-night venue occurred two years after its opening, catering to customers from morning coffee to late-night drinks. Lombardi aims to extend trading hours earlier in the week as well.

Mike speaks with Professor John Blaxland, Professor of International Security & Intelligence Studies, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre ANU, about his recent article detailing his thoughts on where Australia's AUKUS deal should stand if Donald Trump be reelected.
The agreement outlines Australia's plan to acquire six to eight nuclear-powered submarines over the next two decades. However, there's ongoing debate and limited understanding of the necessity for such submarines.
Concerns arise regarding the US's commitment to the deal and its industrial capability to meet submarine demands while questions linger about the timeline and political challenges, especially in the event of a potential change in US leadership.

Mon, 18 Mar 2024 - 6391 - Remember when cash was king?
Mike is joined by Max Phelps, Finance Educator, Mortgage Broker & author of ‘Spending Fast and Slow’, to find out how we can hide money from ourselves in a world of digital money.
Most of us know a grandma, or Nonna, who always seems to have money tucked away somewhere. When cash was king, the wise knew that you had to hide money from yourself and the rest of the family in a tin, under the bed, or in a secret drawer.
Out of sight, out of mind, made it easier to walk around with only a few dollars and to only buy what we needed.
But with the prevalence of credit cards, the ease of borrowing can lead to financial strain when income fluctuates.

Sun, 17 Mar 2024 - 6383 - Could Australia ban TikTok?
Mike talks to Professor Matthew Warren, Director of the Centre for Cyber Security Research & Innovation at RMIT University, about the potential ban of TikTok in the US and whether Australia is likely to follow suit.
The US House of Representatives passed legislation urging TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform due to security concerns linked to China.
This move aligns with a global trend, with TikTok already banned on government devices in multiple countries including Australia, the UK, France, Canada, the EU, Taiwan, and Iran. India has taken more drastic measures, banning TikTok and other Chinese apps for all citizens.
The concern stems from TikTok's alleged data harvesting practices, including access to camera, microphone, contact lists, other app data, and location information.

Mike Jeffreys discusses intuition with Dr. Tanveer Ahmed, a Psychiatrist & Social Commentator.
Intuition, the ability to perceive without analytical reasoning, bridges the conscious and unconscious mind, operating primarily from the right side of the brain, particularly the hippocampus.
Women often excel in this area, linked to the concept of a 'gut feeling' as the digestive system connects to our brains.
Intuition involves recognizing patterns without deep reasoning, potentially a superpower or downfall.
