Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 5704 - Motorists face soaring petrol prices amid global factors
Motorists should brace for continued petrol price hikes throughout the year, with the possibility of hitting $2 per litre during pricing cycles. Several factors, including surging global oil prices, a weaker Australian dollar, rising wholesale costs, and production cuts by major petroleum nations, contributed to a 2.7-cent increase in the weekly unleaded fuel price, reaching an average of $2.04 per litre last week.
Ned Green is joined by NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury, who expresses concern, noting that record-high pump prices are likely to persist. He emphasized that this trend adds to the ongoing cost of living crisis for Australians and contributes significantly to inflationary pressures in the country.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the situation is unlikely to improve by Christmas, as OPEC, Saudi Arabia, and Russia have committed to reducing oil supply.

Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 5703 - Optus hack one year later - have we learned anything?
On the anniversary of the Optus hack, Ned Green asks Today Show Technology Expert Trevor Long, whether he thinks lessons have been learned to prevent it ever happening again.
On September 20 2022, Optus detected and probed into unusual network activity. By the following day, it was confirmed that Optus had experienced a data breach, and regulatory authorities were promptly notified.
On September 22, the company disclosed the breach to the public through news outlets and advised customers to be more vigilant regarding potential fraudulent activities, but clarified that they couldn't ascertain whether the breach had harmed any customers.
Additionally, Optus couldn't determine the exact number of affected customers or if the stolen data had resulted in any harm at that juncture.

Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 5701 - Cooking with Sarah Boorer
Ned Green is joined by Sarah Boorer, Communications professional & CWA award-winning cook, to look at the world of baked goods, delicious treats and & easy recipes.
This week Sarah whips up mushroom nachos.
Ingredients:
250g (1 cup mushrooms) (I generally use Swiss brown or a mix)
1 carrot
1 zucchini
1 small brown onion
1 (400g) can black beans
1 can tinned tomatoes
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp dried garlic powder or flakes
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp chilli powder - add more to increase spiciness
Salt and pepper
Olive oil for cooking
Method:
Preheat oven to 180 C.
1. For the ‘mince’ topping, blitz mushrooms in a food processor for a few
seconds until finely chopped (some big chunks are good). Alternatively, you
can finely dice your mushrooms. Transfer to a bowl.
2. Roughly chop a zucchini, onion and carrot and blitz in the food processor until
fine (alternatively you can finely dice or grate them.)
3. Heat a frypan on medium heat. Add one tbsp olive oil then add mushrooms,
zucchini, onion and carrots. Eventually, there will be a lot of moisture in your
pan. That’s normal, keep cooking until that has evaporated and the carrots are
soft.
4. Add beans, stir to combine.
5. Sprinkle over the spice mixture. Once combined, add in the tinned tomatoes
and tomato paste and reduce the heat. Cook for a further 1-2 minutes until
mixture is warm and consistent. Season with salt and pepper as desired.
6. Use a deep baking tray or rectangular baking dish. Layer in the tortilla chips
and mushroom mixture, and top with grated cheese.
7. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is completely
melted and browning in places. Serve the nachos hot, topped with sour cream,
guacamole, diced fresh tomato and a sprinkle of coriander.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

‘Make no mistake, there is a “war on oldies” happening in Australia, with growing resentment directed at the nation’s ageing baby boomer population’, says Mr Jones.
‘It is happening in subtle and not-so-subtle ways but the underlying message is the same. “Baby boomers, you’ve had it too good for too long and now that you’ve reached your dotage, it is time to pay for your “sins” of affluence — and hard work”.’

Tue, 12 Sep 2023 - 5671 - Cooking with Sarah Boorer
Luke Grant is joined by Sarah Boorer, Communications professional & CWA award-winning cook, to look at the world of baked goods, delicious treats and & easy recipes.
This week Sarah whips up the best basic scones (recipe courtesy of Better Homes & Gardens)
Ingredients
3 cups self-raising flour
100g unsalted butter, chopped
1 cup milk
Extra flour, for dusting
Jam and whipped cream, for serving
Method
- Preheat oven to 220C. Dust an oven tray with extra flour. Sift flour into a large mixing bowl. Add butter. Use your finger tips to rub butter into flour until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre. Add milk and mix with a butter knife until mixture comes together to form a soft loose dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead briefly (about 30 seconds) until dough is smooth. Use the palm of your hand to press dough into a 2cm thick round. Use a 5cm cookie cutter to cut 12 rounds from dough. Place rounds onto prepared tray, about 2cm apart. Dust with a small amount of flour. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature with jam and cream.
COOK'S TIPS
If you don’t have a cookie cutter on hand, just form the dough into a rectangular shape. Use a sharp knife to cut dough into 12 rectangles. You can re-roll any scraps but try to limit the amount of times you re-roll to once, as the scones wont be as light and tender. Wrapping warm cooked scones with a clean tea-towel will give them a soft crust. If the weather is really cold, and your finding it hard to soften your butter at room temperature, chill your butter and grate it. This will make it easy to incorporate it into the flour.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mon, 11 Sep 2023 - 5667 - Pauline Hanson incensed over the possibility of an inheritance tax
Luke is joined by Pauline Hanson, Senator for Queensland / Leader of Pauline Hanson's One Nation, to discuss incoming Productivity Commission boss Danielle Wood urging the government to consider the option of inheritance taxes for the rich… despite admitting the policy is “political dynamite”.
Ms Wood, who will leave her current role at the Grattan Institute to take up the new job, described her personal views as long-standing and based on concerns that the burden of taxation will increasingly fall on younger workers.
To be fair, she said her personal views did not form part of any work she planned to do at the Productivity Commission for the government, unless it made a referral on tax.
Also, now that the writs have been issued for the upcoming referendum, the Senator talks Luke through her own bill to sort out the land titles mess. 40,000 claims yet to be dealt with in NSW alone gives you an idea of the size of the issue.

Thu, 07 Sep 2023 - 5654 - 25% increase in prostate cancer deaths calls for greater awareness
Luke is joined by Dr. Peter Swindle, a Brisbane-based Urologist who specialises solely in prostate cancer and diseases of the prostate. He spoke on Overnight a few months ago, providing valuable insights into what we should know about prostate testing and the safe PSA numbers.
Earlier this week, new data has emerged revealing a concerning 25% increase in the number of deaths from prostate cancer in Australia since 2007. This alarming trend has prompted calls for greater awareness of the disease.
Data just released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that 25,487 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, marking an increase of approximately 5% in just 12 months. During the same period, the number of deaths has surged from 3,507 to 3,743 – equating to more than 10 deaths a day.
With nearly 70 Australian men now being diagnosed every day, the peak body for prostate cancer insists that more must be done to enhance early detection.
Dr Swindle strongly agrees and points out the contradictory advice around PSA numbers that we all should know.

Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 5647 - Keeping kids safe online through age assurance technology
Luke is joined by David Coleman, Shadow Minister for Communications / Federal Member for Banks, about child safety online, which he calls one of the defining issues of our era.
Mr Coleman points to an area of technology called age verification, also called age assurance, which is about doing just that: developing technology so that we can more accurately identify the age of users of websites and so that we can help to ensure that kids don't access material that is bad for them.
He says, ‘Two years ago, the former government led a parliamentary inquiry called Protecting the age of innocence. That was about the issue of verifying the age of kids online. We asked the eSafety Commissioner to look into this issue, and she did. She spent a lot of time, about two years, very carefully looking into this issue of age assurance or age verification online.’
The eSafety Commissioner gave her report to the government in March, but the government only released it last week. One of the key recommendations in that report was to trial age assurance technology, but the government has declined to move forward with it.

New Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson pledges customer-centric focus to restore the airline's tarnished reputation following Alan Joyce's early departure due to mounting public frustration over on-time performance, high airfares, and ticket sale controversies.
Ms Hudson, previously CFO, will now oversee a $15 billion plane financing initiative. She emphasized the need to strike a balance between customers, staff, and the business in a video message to employees, prioritising customer satisfaction with the new management team.
Attention now shifts to Qantas' board led by Richard Goyder.

Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 5635 - Senator Hanson - Native title claim leaves iconic Redlands sites in legal limbo
Luke is joined for her regular chat by Pauline Hanson, Senator for Queensland / Leader of Pauline Hanson's One Nation, about the extraordinary native title claim from Redlands in Brisbane featured on Sky News on the weekend.
Local MP Henry Pike recently addressed the Federation Chamber in Canberra, highlighting that approximately 3,500 Council-owned or managed properties, including iconic sites like Wellington Point Reserve, Cleveland Point Reserve, the Redlands Performing Arts Centre, and local playgrounds, are subject to a native title claim.
Redland City Council seeks clarity from the Federal Court to determine if native title has been extinguished on these sites, a costly and lengthy process that could cost millions and take years.
Mr Pike expressed regret that the Albanese Government abolished the Native Title Respondent Funding Scheme, which had traditionally supported both claimants and respondents.
He wrote to the Attorney General earlier this year, seeking funding restoration for Redland City Council, but received no response, reflecting government inaction on pressing issues.

Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 5634 - Research reveals 40% of young Aussies don’t talk to anyone when worried
Luke is joined by Miranda Bain, the Director of Therapy Services at Act for Kids as Child Protection Week begins.
Act for Kids have commissioned some research which shows concerningly, 40% of young people aged 14-17 don’t talk to anyone when they’re worried, raising the risk of real mental health challenges.
They say 66% of young people worry about their appearance, 64% are worried about school and only 36% of young people said that their close adult always listens to them and surprisingly, the majority of young people want at least 1-2 hours a day with their close adult.
Act for Kids is encouraging adults to take simple steps to ‘Get Comfy Switching on by Switching off’ for the kids in their life, as thousands of young Australians experience significant mental health challenges.

Thu, 31 Aug 2023 - 5622 - Master Plumbers Association NSW addresses power outage crisis
In the wake of last night's extensive power outage that left approximately 30,000 households in metropolitan Sydney without electricity, Luke speaks with Nathaniel Smith, Chief Executive Officer Master Plumbers Association NSW, who emphasises the crucial need for diversifying energy sources to ensure the resilience of households during such incidents.
Mr Smith says, ”The outage underscored the vulnerability of our energy network, particularly during times of strain and increased demand. It left thousands of residents without access to essential services, such as heating, and cooking appliances. As a solution to such predicaments, the Association advocates for the adoption of alternative energy sources, such as gas, that can provide a reliable energy supply even during blackouts.”
He also said “While renewable energy sources are important for a sustainable future, it is imperative that we strike a balance by incorporating energy options that offer consistent performance during emergencies. Gas, in particular, emerges as a viable choice due to its ability to provide essential services irrespective of power disruptions.”
