Kyle Sandilands joins Rob McKnight for a wide-ranging chat ahead of the launch of his new streaming service, KSLive, this Monday.
Kyle reveals the new venture has already pulled in nearly $2 million in subscriptions before a single episode has aired — including a strange spike of signups out of the EU large enough that European tax authorities contacted his accountants to check the business was legitimate.
Rob puts it to Kyle directly: is he in denial about the collapse of his on-air partnership with Jackie O? Kyle admits he "just refused to believe it" even after seeing the paperwork, and opens up on what he says was a fifty-fifty relationship, the lawyers, the Zoom calls, and why he still says he'd "die for Jackie" despite it all.

Wed, 24 Jun 2026 - 21min - 379 - Robert Irwin's Logies Backlash - and Dr Chris Brown's future at Seven | MEDIA McKNIGHT
Rob McKnight, from his garage on the Gold Coast, covers the big media stories of the week on Media McKnight, episode 45. Robert Irwin has been named host of the 2026 Logie Awards, and the reaction in the comments has been overwhelmingly negative. Rob breaks down what the appointment might signal for Channel 7's longer-term plans — and what it could mean for Dr. Chris Brown. FIFA has introduced mandatory water breaks at the World Cup — and broadcasters are allowed to run commercials during them. Fans are furious, calling it a money grab. But Rob argues the real story is the financial reality facing free-to-air broadcasters competing for every ad dollar in a fractured media market. Plus, a spidercam fell 20 metres onto the pitch during a football friendly in Hungary — and the footage is terrifying. Reports are emerging that Kyle Sandilands and ARN could be close to a settlement in their Federal Court dispute. Rob makes a bold prediction on tape — and acknowledges there'll be no hiding if he's wrong. And in Rob's Rant: Doctor Who has been effectively canceled under Russell T. Davies, with the BBC Christmas special scrapped and the show put out to tender. Rob argues the audience wasn't against diversity — they were against being lectured. - FIFA World Cup ad breaks debate - Spidercam falls at Hungary match - Molly Meldrum health fears - Robert Irwin named 2026 Logies host - Kyle Sandilands vs ARN — settlement on the cards? - Doctor Who cancelled — Rob's Rant 📰 Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. Media McKnight: Nat Bass dudded by BBC? | When Australian Ninja Warrior is filming | Big Brother Brisbane Location Confirmed | Guy Ashford Out | Nine & the NRL | Qld Govt False Advertising | Darren Sanders On tonight's Media McKnight: Nat Bassingthwaighte reveals her song Voodoo Child was used in one of the most iconic Doctor Who episodes ever — distributed to more than 200 territories — and the Rogue Traders received not a single cent. We dig into why. Plus, Nat on the ageism backlash she faced when cast in the musical Waitress. Guy Ashford is out at 2HD and newFM following the radio awards groping incident. The right outcome — and a sign the industry is finally moving on. Big Brother is confirmed to be moving to Screen Queensland Studios in Brisbane. And Australian Ninja Warrior is heading to Channel 10 in 2027, with Queensland production also likely. The Australian newspaper runs a story suggesting Nine couldn't afford the NRL rights because of its EPL deal. We call it out for what it is. The Queensland government is still running ads calling themselves "the new government" — 18 months after the election. Time to update the messaging. Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 16min - 377 - No, it wasn't just 'speculation' | Media McKnight
Ch 10 axes I'm A Celebrity | Angus Ross returns to 7 | Kyle & Jackie O staff sacked | Colbert's bizarre finale | Eurovision TV tech Rob McKnight, television and radio producer-presenter with over 30 years experience, brings you the week's biggest media industry stories from his garage on the Gold Coast. - Channel 10 confirms I'm a Celebrity axing — Rob broke it first - Angus Ross returns to Seven in expanded MD role - Kyle & Jackie O staff redundancies — Intern Pete speaks out - Stephen Colbert's Late Show finale and the $40M question - NBC reporter mocked for White House shooting reaction - Behind the scenes of Eurovision's world feed graphics system Channel 10 has confirmed the axing of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! — and Rob broke the story over a week before the official announcement. Despite other outlets calling it speculation, his trusted sources were right. Again. Angus Ross is back at Channel 7 — and in a bigger role. After being sacked in March following 27 years at the network, the popular programmer returns as Managing Director, Television and Streaming. Meanwhile, veteran commercial director Bruce McWilliam has quietly become Southern Cross Media's second-biggest shareholder, setting the cat among the pigeons after the 7/SCA merger. The fallout from the Kyle and Jackie O axing continues, with three more team members — including the show's censor — now made redundant. Rob's recent interview with Intern Pete gives an inside look at how the team is coping, with the Kyle/Jackie O legal action against ARN still playing out in court. Stephen Colbert's Late Show finale was, by Rob's assessment, a bizarre farewell. With Paramount citing $40 million in annual losses and speculation about Trump's influence, Rob examines whether the show's enormous overheads — including custom-made Armani suits for every appearance — contributed to its demise. And what does it mean for the future of late night TV? Plus: an NBC reporter gets mocked online for her measured reaction to gunshots at the White House — and Rob has something to say about that. And a fascinating look at the extraordinary broadcast technology behind Eurovision's global graphics sync. 📺 McKnight Tonight streams Monday, Wednesday & Thursday at 8pm AEST. 📰 Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. This week, live TV chaos strikes on two continents — Sky News UK gets tangled in its own wiring during a major political moment, while CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil is stranded in Taiwan due to a visa issue as Trump meets Xi in Beijing, and a medical emergency unfolds live on air. Rob unpacks what went wrong and what the control room should have done. WIN Network has confirmed it will drop Channel 10 services in the Riverland, Mount Gambier and Griffith markets from June 30, following a similar exit from Mildura in 2024. Rob says this is just the beginning — and the numbers tell a grim story for Network 10's parent, Paramount. Karl Stefanovic and Eddie McGuire are teaming up for a new Friday night video podcast called The Long Weekend, broadcasting across the Gold Radio Network and streaming on iHeart, 9Now and Stan. Rob explains why this is a smart play, and why Jam TV deserves more credit than it gets. Five major publishers have alleged Mark Zuckerberg personally ordered Meta to pirate millions of books to train its AI system, Llama. Rob takes a deep dive into fair dealing under Australian law — what it covers, what it doesn't, and why Nine's use of a Daily Mail photo during the Bondi Beach shootings is actually legal, even if it feels wrong. Sam Pang won't be hosting the Logies this year. Tue, 19 May 2026 - 21min - 375 - MM040 - Kyle & Jackie O - New court documents bring new twists
In this special edition of Media McKnight, Rob McKnight — television and radio producer and presenter broadcasting from his garage on the Gold Coast — goes deep into the latest batch of Federal Court documents in the Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O case against ARN. The Federal Court has released the initial claims, the defence, and the applicants' replies — and there's a lot to unpack. Rob is joined by employment lawyer Michael Byrnes from Swaab to work through the claims and counterclaims paragraph by paragraph. In this episode: Did ARN have different expectations of Kyle — and does the court language actually say so? The February 20 broadcast: Kyle's team admits Jackie was visibly upset — then points straight to the censor Kyle was never told there was a complaint about his relationship with Jackie — and never given a chance to fix it Why is Kyle's team agreeing with ARN that Jackie repudiated her contract — and what's the legal play? ARN says Kyle was an independent contractor they couldn't control — so who was responsible? ARN's "serious misconduct" case goes beyond February 20 — can they broaden the argument now? The 14-day remedy notice: ARN says "reasonable" means time, not opportunity quality Kyle's team fires back: ARN encouraged the very conduct it's now calling misconduct Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. Wed, 13 May 2026 - 1h 05min - 374 - S01E39 - Why FaceBook shouldn't have to pay for news
News bargaining incentive: social media vs AI | Screen Forever: Bluey IP, Stan, Channel 10 | Sarah Abo's maternity leave play | Channel 9 job cuts | All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane | Tony Jones: 40 years at Nine Rob McKnight brings his three decades of broadcasting experience to this week's Media McKnight, with a pointed take on the federal government's draft news bargaining incentive legislation — and why politicians are confusing social media promotion with AI theft. Plus, fresh insights from the Screen Forever conference on the Gold Coast, and the latest from inside the networks. The federal government has released draft legislation for the next stage of the news bargaining incentive, aimed at making big tech pay for journalism. But Rob draws a clear line the legislation doesn't: social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram aren't stealing journalism — they're driving traffic back to news sites for free. It's AI platforms like Google that are actually scraping and serving up content without sending users anywhere, and that's where the focus should be. Rob attended the Screen Forever conference on the Gold Coast, where ABC managing director Hugh Marks addressed the Bluey merchandising rights miss, Nine's Adrian Swift talked up new Stan IP including an OnlyFans series, and Ten/Paramount's Sarah Thornton made clear the network won't be taking big swings on untested formats. Rob also delivers a blunt verdict on the new Shark Island series. Sarah Abo has made a smart public move — declaring her intention to return to the Today show just three months after the birth of her baby boy, making it very difficult for Nine to push her out amid reports of a potential host refresh. Meanwhile, Nine has confirmed 20 redundancies in the first stage of its Future News overhaul, with automation coming to the Today show control room. Rob reviews indie film All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane — made for just $13,000 and starring newcomer Nell Lee and Home and Away's Dan Ewing — and offers his recommendation ahead of screenings in Brisbane (May 29–31), Sydney (June 18) and Melbourne (July 9). And a big congratulations to Nine Melbourne sports presenter Tony Jones, celebrating 40 years at the network — with an on-air moment as awkward and endearing as you'd expect. Federal government's draft news bargaining incentive legislation — and why Rob thinks it's got it wrong on social media Screen Forever Gold Coast: ABC, Nine/Stan, Ten/Paramount on IP, risk and the state of Australian TV Sarah Abo's maternity leave play — and why Nine can't easily move her on Channel 9 announces 20 redundancies in Future News overhaul; automation coming to Today Indie film All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane — Rob's review and upcoming screenings Tony Jones celebrates 40 years at Channel Nine 📰 Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. Sun, 26 Apr 2026 - 1h 33min - 372 - Ben Roberts-Smith v The Media | MEDIA McKNIGHT
++NOTE - Rob refers to Jim Chalmers during the Salute and a Slap segment, when it is actually Richard Marles. Rob will give himself a good slap over that one!
**********
Australian Survivor axed? | Ben Roberts-Smith media circus | Logies reform | Karl's salute and slap | ABC diversity spin Rob McKnight breaks down the week's biggest Australian media stories — including an exclusive on the future of Australian Survivor, the media coverage surrounding the arrest of Ben Roberts-Smith, a new nomination process for the Gold Logie, a measured look at Karl Stefanovic's interview highs and lows, and the real story behind the ABC's decision to end its diversity group partnerships. Australian Survivor's days may be numbered. As exclusively reported by TV Blackbox, Channel 10 has scrapped plans for a back-to-back two-season shoot, with only one season now going ahead. Rob reveals the axing of host Jonathan LaPaglia had less to do with salary than a long-running clash with Endemol Shine executive Amelia Fisk — and explains why all signs are pointing to the return of Australian Ninja Warrior as a replacement. The Ben Roberts-Smith arrest and the media circus around it. Critics were quick to condemn the camera crew at the airport — but as Rob explains, that footage came from the Office of the Special Investigator, not a news outlet. Rob also reflects on his McKnight Tonight interview with combat veteran Heston Russell, which had generated 56,000 views and over 1,100 comments at time of recording, and what the reaction tells us about public trust in the media. The ABC, diversity partnerships, and the misinformation spreading online. The ABC ended its paid memberships with Pride in Diversity, the Australian Disability Network, and the Diversity Council of Australia — but it is not abandoning diversity and inclusion programs. Rob cuts through the spin from both sides, including the Media Watch history that many viral videos are conveniently ignoring. Logies reform: a step in the right direction. TV Week can now put forward nominees for the Gold Logie and Hall of Fame — and Rob, a Logies judge himself, explains why this is a welcome change, and has some pointed advice for presenters submitting their reels. A Salute and a Slap for Karl Stefanovic. The Karl Stefanovic Show has changed Australian podcasting. The production values are high, the interviews are compelling, and Rob genuinely can't wait to see what comes next. But in the same breath — that Jim Chalmers interview on Today nearly had it all, until Karl tried to land a last-minute hit and move on without letting the Treasurer respond. Australian Survivor back-to-back shoot scrapped — and what's coming next The real reason Jonathan LaPaglia was axed from Survivor Ben Roberts-Smith arrest footage — who actually shot it? Heston Russell interview reaction: 56K views, 1,100+ comments ABC drops diversity group partnerships — what it actually means Gold Logie nomination reform — and advice for presenters Karl Stefanovic: salute and a slap BBC Eurovision 1977 — the director's cut you weren't supposed to hear 📺 Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 24min - 371 - Is Robin Bailey a bully? | MEDIA McKNIGHT
ARN's big winner revealed | Robin Bailey's media ambush | Gambling ads & your TV | Media McKnight
Rob McKnight analyses the week's biggest media stories, starting with the Kyle and Jackie O fallout — and the one person laughing all the way to the bank. As the pair head to court, new details emerge about the role of their fiercest critics in bringing down the $200 million deal, and ARN's radical new direction is taking shape, with Karl Stefanovic reportedly signed and talkback heavyweights including Ray Hadley, Ben Fordham and Samantha Armitage being courted.
Also this week — Kiss FM Brisbane's Robin Bailey lured a Courier Mail journalist onto her show to ambush him over a reader poll that didn't go her way. Rob asks the question: is that empowerment, or just bullying? Plus, the federal government's sweeping gambling ad reforms and what they really mean for free-to-air TV, the NRL's record rights deal ambitions, and local content budgets already under pressure.
Ita Buttrose joins Rob fresh from the McKnight Tonight 100th episode to share her thoughts on the ABC strike and the future of Australian media. And in Shit I Just Don't Care About — Fox Footy's Gary Lyon apologises for a hot mic moment. Rob is unmoved.

Tue, 07 Apr 2026 - 27min - 370 - NEW: Will Jackie O testify against Kyle Sandilands | MEDIA McKNIGHT
Jackie O sues ARN for $82 million | Will she testify against Kyle? | Kyle's court date set | 7 News Spotlight gets new EP | BBC Scotland's live TV blunder Rob McKnight examines the latest legal escalation in the Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O dispute — including Jackie's formal Federal Court action against ARN alleging breach of the Fair Work Act, her $82.25 million compensation claim, and whether she could be called as a witness against Kyle at his June hearing. Rob is joined by employment lawyer Michael Byrnes to break down both cases. Jackie O — now confirmed as not having resigned — has lodged formal proceedings in the Federal Court, alleging ARN's termination of her contract constituted adverse action after she raised psychosocial health and safety complaints about Kyle Sandilands. She is also claiming ARN made misleading and deceptive statements in its ASX announcement. Total compensation sought: at least $82.25 million. Kyle Sandilands had his first directions hearing on Friday, with the case set down for five days beginning 22 June. His legal team is seeking specific performance — Kyle back on air — but employment lawyer Michael Burns says courts almost never grant such orders for personal services. The real battle is likely to be about damages. With Jackie now suing ARN, questions arise about whether she'll be subpoenaed to testify against Kyle. The Australian reported ARN intended to call her as a star witness — but with both now in adversarial positions, the situation has changed dramatically. Channel 7 has appointed journalist Rahni Sadler as executive producer of 7 News Spotlight, replacing Gemma Williams. Rob says the move signals serious intent to challenge 60 Minutes — but warns Spotlight needs to be on air 40 weeks a year to make it stick. A BBC Scotland bulletin was interrupted when it accidentally crossed live to the set of The One Show as presenters chatted and prepared for the next program. Rob examines how automation and reduced presentation staff make these gremlins increasingly likely. Bullet list: Jackie O lodges Federal Court action against ARN — $82.25 million claim Jackie alleges bullying, unsafe workplace, and misleading ASX statement Will Jackie be subpoenaed to testify against Kyle? Kyle's case set for five days from 22 June — specific performance vs damages Rob's exclusive: termination letter to Kyle focused solely on 20 February broadcast Rahni Sadler named EP of 7 News Spotlight BBC Scotland's live TV blunder — the price of automation 📺 McKnight Tonight streams Monday, Wednesday & Thursday at 9pm. 📰 Media McKnight drops every Tuesday. This week on Media McKnight, Rob McKnight breaks down one of the biggest behind-the-scenes shake-ups in Australian radio — the fallout from Ash Bradnam’s axing from NOVA Brisbane after 21 years, the confirmed departure of Nikki Osborne, and the return of Susie O’Neil to breakfast. Plus, a deep dive into one of the most significant global media battles in years: Netflix’s blockbuster acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount’s hostile takeover move, and what all of this could mean for Network 10, local investment, and the future of AFL and NRL broadcast rights in Australia. Could a failed Paramount bid actually put Channel 10 back in the sports rights race? Also in this episode: – The escalating feud between 50 Cent and Sean “Diddy” Combs, and the explosive Netflix docuseries that’s reignited it – The end of the ACRAs and why the new replacement radio and podcast awards are pricing out independents – A brutally honest new segment: “Things I Don’t Give a Sh*t About” – And a trip into the McKnight Tonight archives with rare 2011 footage from the 9NEWS and A Current Affair teams If you care about Australian media, radio, television, streaming, sports rights, and industry power plays, this episode is essential viewing. TV Blackbox's Rob McKnight & Steve Molk return for one more podcast chat before the end of 2024 to wrap things up and look into the future, now that the Upfront season is complete.
There's so much to catch up on given they've been away for so long, and with so much happening, including:
The press releases from the 2024 ratings year where Seven, Nine, and 10 all claim to have won something (Spoilers: they may not have won what they claim to win);A sharp turn into the state of the Australian media industry given the complete staffing disruption that took place, including (more) redundancies, firings, resignations, controversial sackings, Nine's Intersection report, and almost the entirety of the ABC's News Breakfast team leaving (but staying with the ABC); andRob & Molk cast their eye across the Upfront offerings from all FTA networks and Foxtel and make their calls on what wil be good, what sounds iffy, and what is going to stink. It's all the opinion you've been missing from your TV Blackbox mum and dad!
If you like it - share it with a friend, or on your social media networks. Also, let Rob and Molk know if you agree (or not) with their assessments...engaging conversation is always enjoyed.

Tue, 11 Jun 2024 - 49min - 313 - S09E12 Grief porn, THE BIGGEST LOSER, and BLUEY gives us the sign of things to come
This week there was not enough time for us to adequately cover the full breadth and depth of even these topics:
As quickly as the horror unfolded at what became the tragedy of WESTFIELD BONDI JUNCTION, so too the TV networks leapt into rolling coverage. Well, most did. The ABC ignored it, and Seven had the horses to finish running (with the latter managing to name the wrong person as the perpetrator). AND THEN they milked it for all it was worth through Sunday and Monday. Nothing like a bit of GRIEF PORN to help people simultaneously remember and forget.Come Monday, Justice Michael Lee delivered his judgement on the BRUCE LEHRMANN v CHANNEL 10/LISA WILKINSON DEFAMATION CASE. Wow. WOW. Molk offered his opinions on the winners and losers were, and the implications of the Justice's findings. The biggest loser? Bruce Lehrmann by a country mile and a hat. After the impassioned conversation on last week's podcast ep, so much has happened even within the corral at 7NEWS SPOTLIGHT. The collateral damage of Seven being dragged into the Lehrmann/10 defo case by former producer Taylor Auerbach is that executive producer MARK LLEWELLYN has terminated his relationship with the Seven Network, and the Network snuck the release out during Justice Lee's reading of his summary judgement. Will the show continue, and how does the 7News brand recover? The best documentary about a family of cartoon dogs has wrapped up...or has it? Speculation around BLUEY and her future continues to swirl, with nothing by spin from the ABC and silence from creators Ludo Studios. The benefit of the 28 minute episode airing Sunday past is that it now holds the title of "highest rating program in VOZ history" (total audience average). SO WHAT NOW?!Another glorious instalment of the TV BINGEBOX rounds us out (upmolks and downmolks aplenty). Join in the fun and comment below to share what have you been watching...We're so glad you watched or listened this latest episode of the TV BLACKBOX Podcast - that's firteen, firteen, firty-two.

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 1h 17min - 312 - S09E11 SPOTLIGHT returns (for now); MICHAEL PELL pulls his payroll plug; and is this the untimely end of BLUEY?!
You almost could have predicted what we we going to talk about this week:
Seven confirm that, despite the growing public displeasure with the behind the scenes shenanigans coming out as a part of the Lehrmann/Channel 10 defamation case, 7NEWS SPOTLIGHT will return this week...but they have not confirmed that executive producer MARK LLEWELLYN will maintain his role; Continuing with Seven, budget cuts are affecting programs and staffing...that means the end of the former EP of Sunrise MICHAEL PELL and his magical United States mystery tour that seemingly has offered nothing to the domestic business; Panic has set in for fans of the show, as BLUEY makers Ludo Studios remain tight-lipped about the future of everyone's favourite animated documentary about Blue and Red Heelers; Nine and Foxtel compete to grab a hold of TABCORP's streaming animal cruelty competition that also destroys human lives; All-around TV nice guy and Lego Masters Australia host HAMISH BLAKE conveniently lands a profile in Stellar magazine and talks about his reaction to Sonia Kruger's Gold Logie acceptance speech joke-that-wasn't-a-joke; and Kevin Perry delivers another exclusive, advising the airdate for the six episode run of JEOPARDY AUSTRALIA, hosted by Stephen Fry and buried on Saturday nights. We round things out with the much-loved and highly-anticipated TV BINGEBOX segment (upmolks only). Join in the fun and comment below to share what have you been watching...We're so glad you watched or listened this latest episode of the TV BLACKBOX Podcast - the cats of Australia have made their choice.

Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 1h 03min - 311 - S09E10 LEHRMANN's (alleged) links; DING DONG's for beer pong; and ROVE make Rob livid over live (tv)
Brand new things we talked about this week:
Rob delivers an exclusive update on the Bruce Lehrmann defamation case with Channel 10;Denise 'Ding Dong' Drysdalelands sprout-deep in the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! Australia jungle, which allows Rob and Robbo to wax lyrical about the taping of that infamous Christmas segment;Seven brings home the goods in the second week of the the Easter non-ratings period (so does it matter if it's non-ratings?);Rove mentions that "people will watch live TV", which allows Rob to go on a tear as to what he thinks should happen with live TV, while Robbo shares his valid opinion also, and Molk brings some sanity and reality to it all; andJudge Judy returns to TV while in syndication on another network, and is making out like a bank robber. The episode ends, as usual, with the highly-regarded TV BINGEBOX segment (massive upmolk). What have you been watching?
Thanks for tuning in for this episode of the TV BLACKBOX Podcast - it's for when a hard-earned thirst needs a big cold beer...

Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 57min - 310 - S09E09 New ABC Chair KIM WILLIAMS decrees; MARCIA, Marcia, Marcia; BROOKE BONEY(s) herself
Relax, fella. The ratings don't matter this week. Come over here and give me a cuddle.
It's a steaming fresh pile of stuff you may be interested in:
New ABC Chair and the one filling the biggest stillettos in the business Kim Williams fires a shot across the entire collective ABC staff's bow to ensure they know he means business when it comes to impartiality (no matter what The Australian thinks they can define "impartiality" as);How can Channel 10 solo-CEO Beverley McGarvey axe the same show...twice...while shedding another 60 staff?;Australian Idol "judge" Marcia Hines collapses at the second last hurdle and is rushed to hospital, but in a rapid turn of Easter-ish events is resurrected and returns to crown the new winner;Rob has a chat with co-host of the new Nine show Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars Australia in Janine Allis and asks for an original King William Chocolate on the way out;The high-profile resignation list fills out: Brooke Boney gives up The Today Show for England, and Bruce McWilliam gives up Seven for something more profitable; andRob uncovers the 'pee protocol' on The Price Is Right. We back out the episode with another chock-full edition of our highly-lauded TV BINGEBOX segment (often copied, never matched). Tue, 26 Mar 2024 - 54min - 309 - S09E08 THE DOCTOR is out (and in?); Nine's HAMISH TURNER talks their great start to 2024; McGarvey in charge (of our days and nights...again)
Here we go, friends. It's another extremely frest episode of the TV Blackbox podcast wtth Rob, Robbo, and Molk...all completely livestreamed live, with audio as-live.
Every Tuesday night in season from 8pm AEDT/7pm AEST/etc., you can join us live on the TV Blackbox Facebook page or YouTube channel. We'd absolutely love it if you joined in - as many keep doing - by commenting on the livestream...which allows us to include a broad sample in the episode to help punctuate our conversation. For those that join us live-thanks for playing along, friends!
So what did we talk about? How about all of this:
Nine's National News Director Darren Wick steps away in kind of awkward circumstances, and nobody can agree on what's actually happening;Rob has a chat with Nine's director of programming Hamish Turner about their best start to the year (and that's saying something), and how that positions the network for the rest of 2024;In news absolutely everyone saw coming Paramount Global confirmed Beverley McGarvey as stand-alone CEO to run the ANZ business all by herself like a proper grown-up and everything; There is controversy (look, not really) at the new airdate (release time) of popular (with some) series Doctor Who (they are on first) now that it's part of Disney's content family (regimented programming) and this is what happens when capitalism overtakes public broadcasting (naturally). We finish this ep with our traditional TV BINGEBOX segment, full of endorsements and warnings (some upmolks here and some downmolks there).

Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 1h 00min - 308 - S09E07 Vale MIKE McCOLL-JONES; Streaming steps up; Nine Perth getting tippy with it
The end of an era in Australian comedy writing offers an answer to the classic "Why did the chicken cross the road?"..."To pay tribute to Mike McColl-Jones"
So what did we talk about? Check this out:
It finally happened...streaming has overtakenlinear broadcast TV as the predominant way we watch television (and it happened last year!);Channel 9 Perth (yes, it exists WA - that's the channel between 8 and 10) shake up their afternoons in a programming tipping point;Molk manages to wedge in some chat about the new VOZ ratings metrics and how everything is travelling (zero surprises, honestly);Sharon Osborne attempts to be relevant by ranting against Simon Cowell and a tree fell over in a forest and nobody heard it so it never happened; andThe last of the old-school television comedy writers Mike McColl-Jones submits his last script and heads to the eternal green room for a nightcap with Graham, Don, Bert, and the gang. Then, as always, we round out the night with another TV BINGEBOX segment, bursting at the seams (some upmolks here and some downmolks there).

Tue, 12 Mar 2024 - 46min - 307 - S09E06 META doesn't mince words; Seven seek to sway the public; and bad news for NZ
The boys are back in town - Rob, Robbo, and Molk are locked and loaded to deliver you another massive podcast. Just be careful what you wish for (in both livestreamed video and audio formats).
We punch out the livestream every Tuesday night in season from 8pm AEDT/7pm AEST/etc., you can watch live on the TV Blackbox Facebook page or YouTube channel. We'd absolutely love it if you joined in - as many keep doing - by commenting on the livestream...which allows us to include a broad sample in the episode to help punctuate our conversation. For those that join us live-thanks for playing along, friends!
Here's the highlights from this week's episode:
Meta promise to cuck the commercial News organisations in Australia (including the commercial TV ones) and chuck their news-flavoured toys out of the cot...so is it a big Aussie bye-bye to Facebook, WhatsApp, and Insta?;Seven attempt to take the moral high ground with regard to sports streaming rights and...the cynics are circling;Changes to categories and judging for the 2024 Logie Awards prompt the question: "Is it too little, too late?";Unmade's Tim Burrowes had a great chat with Foxtel & Hubbl CEO Patrick Delany and we have thoughts; andWarner Bros Discovery shuts down almost the entire New Zealand newsroom of Newshub, which means the land of the long white cloud media cloud just got real dark...and we ponder the impact for Australia. Then, as always, we round out the night with another TV BINGEB

Tue, 05 Mar 2024 - 55min - 306 - S09E05 The Prominence presentations; Vale Jesse Baird; and Foxtel's Hubbl almost launched into orbit
A little bit of kumbya goes a long way when you have to present to a joint Parliamentary committee, asking them to help save your struggling business model.
Hello darlings - Robbo is out sick this week, so Rob and Molk welcome back super-sub and producer to the stars Abbey to the podcast! Also, despite all the encouragement we've returned in simultaneous video and audio format with the livestream.
You allegedly wanted it - we finally did it!
Livestreamed every Tuesday night in season from 8pm AEDT/7pm AEST/etc., you can watch live on the TV Blackbox Facebook page or YouTube channel. We'd absolutely love it if you joined in - as many did - by commenting on the livestream and we've included just a sampling in the episode to help punctuate our conversation. We're so glad so many of you turned up again.
For those with the songs of Taylor Swift still ringing in their ears, here's the big topics of the week (as decided on by us)...
It was a unique day in the Australian TV landscape where pretty much every executive in the country to do with free-to-air TV - ABC MD David Anderson ; SBS MD James Taylor; Commercial FTA CEOs James Warburton, Mike Sneesby, and Beverley McGarvey; Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany; Fetch CEO Scott Lorsen; and a bunch of others - all fronted up on a joint Parliamentary enquiry to offer their submissions and answer questions on the proposed Prominence legislation. It's serious business and not an easy solve - if the legislation doesn't happen, will it kill Australian FTA TV? Didn't they do that to themselves already?! (If you missed it and want to check the entire day's submissions and questions, you can watch it all here on the APH website. It's actually mostly interesting for almost all of it.)
The tragedy of the death of Jesse Baird and his partner Luke Davies has hit the Australian media industry hard. The team reflect on Jesse's work at Channel 10, and share Sarah Harris' heartfelt memories from The Project.
Rob & Molk attended Foxtel's launch of their big new thing - Hubbl (🎶 every day I'm Hubbl-in' 🎶) - and think it might actually have legs. Spoilers, there was no reaction pod as they didn't get their hands on anything, but that will come in a week or so.
Last, but never least, we unwrap a huge TV BINGEBOX segment that also now doubles as your chance to throw in the comments the things you're watching, upmolking and downmolking (copyright us).
It's a big one not short of opinion. Welcome to another edition of the TV BLACKBOX Podcast (so big you can see it from space).

Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 1h 03min - 305 - S09E04 10 Co-CEO exits, Melbourne Cup now on Nine, and are you ready to HUBBL?!
One half the co-CEO duo at 10Paramount gets the chop as Paramount Global boss Bob Bakish downsizes everything (again), and the Wilkinson/10 trial takes an interesting turn as Bruce Lehrmann weighs in by filing a complaint on one of 10's lawyers. We dive into hypothesizing on Lisa Wilkinson's future media opportunities and...look, we think they're not great.
Nine seals the new Melbourne Cup deal, and it's not without intricacies (and a lack of care by many). Has the race that used to stop the nation jumped the televisual shark?
Foxtel will officially launch their 'game-changing' new device HUBBL and the embedded TV product HUBBL GLASS so we chat about what we know, what we think it might do, and make up the rest (keep an eye out for a special reaction pod from Rob & Molk after the event where hopefully they come with more detail).
Finally, Seven announce the full cast for the 2024 edition of DANCING WITH THE STARS, and two-thirds of us are keen and the other one thinks it isn't even worth macarena-ing over.
Another sizeable TV BINGEBOX segment rounds out the pod, this time with some of your recommendations to boot. How good is engagement?! 😉
Sit down and settle in for another exciting episode of the TV BLACKBOX podcast (guaranteed 57% factual).

Tue, 20 Feb 2024 - 51min - 304 - S09E03 Wilkinson *WAS* fired, streaming crybabies lawsuit, and…wait — the AACTAs were on?!
Also, the Super Bowl was massive in the US and here in Australia…but was it reasonable?
Rob, Robbo, and Molk return talking all things TV trends, trials, and tribulations (and we tried a new thing…but more on that later).
The huge news was the affidavit from Lisa Wilkinson proving she was pushed from THE PROJECT as her court case with Channel 10 started today, and it should send shivers down the spine of every executive and every piece of on-air talent around. In short – it confirms you’re only one speech/op-ed away from “having the full support of the network” and getting dumped.
In the US a class action is being brought against Amazon for introduction of ads to their Prime Video service. Fair, or crocodile teas? Almost as bas as the Australian sports betting companies wanting to eek out some free to air spectrum to run their own TV channels so you can see the games they can take your money for 24/7.
Did you know the AACTAs were on over the weekend? The ratings said you (and the rest of Australia) didn’t watch…why is that?
In smaller news to round things out: THE LATEST shits to Perth to save Seven money, Piers Morgan continues to be irrelevant (though will probably make some money out of Google now), and the Super Bowl delivers massive ratings in the US (and Australia) for two big reasons.
Also, we finish out with another meaty TV BINGEBOX segment sure to set your PVRs and catch-up services groaning with (mostly) great choices.
It’s a brand new TV BLACKBOX podcast, back just in time to ensure we’re topically-adjacent.

Tue, 13 Feb 2024 - 48min - 303 - S09E02 Paramount+ pulls local shows, VOZ is a mess, and the GRAMMYS set a new standard
There's real news about the fate/future of Paramount+/10Paramount that concerns even us!
This week it's Rob(erto), Robbo, and Molk lining up to discuss and dissect the week in Australian TV (and attached bits).
As Paramount's US boss Bob Bakish looks to be preparing Paramount Global for sale, what will this mean for 10Paramount down under? Is their recent shelving of an array of Australian original series a sign of what is to come, or simply bad timing as they seek to eek out additional revenue from licensing the content elsewhere? The team aren't leaning into a beat up--this is a live situation that will have real impact on everyone who works at Channel 10.
The media buyers have said it'll be at least 12 months before they pay any heed to the new VOZ ratings, and we discuss why that might be and the current PR Jedi playbook when it comes to promoting your shows and making sure no matter the metric, everyone's a winner! (NOTE: reach is not a thing; national audience is all we really have to go by now and we should be leaning into that...but state-by-state numbers for shows would be nice.)
There's THE GRAMMYS to discuss as they showed everyone how to do it (and saw a bump in their ratings). Trevor Noah smashed it and kept it light and fun for the entire (nearly) four-hour broadcast. Taylor Swift announcing her new album didn't hurt either.
Then finally, as the casting for the new series of DANCING WITH THE STARS starts to roll out, does it highlight that the audience are less concerned with the format and more concerned with the controversy surrounding the star?
The TV BLACKBOX podcast has returned, and we are full of surprises (or something that starts with 's', anyway).

Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 55min - 302 - S09E01 Upset at Aunty, all-new ratings challenges, Grimshaw back at Nine, and hello 2024
Oh, we're back friends, and boy do we have stuff to talk about
Rob, Abbey, Robbo, and Molk return for another massive year of the TV BLACKBOX podcast - fresh from our mouths to your earholes (ew).
There is literally heaps to talk about tonight, from Antoinette Lattouf's firing from the ABC for a retweet to ABC boss David Anderson losing the support of the entire ABC, the impact of entirely new metrics with the VOZ daily ratings, changes at 60 Minutes, Tracy Grimshaw being coaxed back on-screen at Nine, and the confirmation of ABC Chair Ita Buttrose's replacement when she steps down - former News Limited boss Kim Williams.
Plus, as an extra special Summer treat, it's our biggest bingebox yet! Will Molk be allowed to talk about more than three shows? Will Rob have watched more than one and an endless repeat of Big Bang Theory? Does Robbo still love everyone? Can Abbey continue to reign supreme as producer-extraordinaire?
See?! SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT. We're so glad you're back too.

Tue, 30 Jan 2024 - 56min - 301 - SPECIAL PODCAST | Analysis of the OzTAM ratings changes starting Monday!
t's the most fundamental change in OzTAM reporting since it began over twenty years ago...so what does it all mean?!
TV Blackbox the podcast is back for 2024 with a special edition from TVBB editors Rob, Kevin, and Molk to discuss the changes for OzTAM reporting that start Monday 29 January 2024.
Out with the old, and in with the new - all the old reports (and data!) are gone, expunged from the OzTAM website, in preparation for two new daily VOZ Total TV reports landing at 11:35am, and an additional new weekly report.
Also, no more subscription TV data at all (Foxtel will create and deliver their own reporting this year).
Is it good for the industry? Is it shifting deckchairs on the televisual Titanic? Can this help return some positivity to an industry already feeling fragmented by changes to audience viewing patterns and having them bounce around between eleventy-seven subscription streaming competitors?
So, here's your lowdown on the changes, and our views (for good and for ill) on what they mean for our much-loved Australian TV industry. TV Blackbox the podcast is back!

Wed, 15 Nov 2023 - 50min - 297 - All the news from the 2024 SBS and FOXTEL Upfront events
After attending both the Foxtel and SBS Upfront events on his lonesome, Molk reflects on the announcements - corporate and content - and the general vibe of both events (which were very different - one at night, one in the middle of the day).
There's lots to unpack, from Foxtel's launch of Project Magneto--now Hubbl--and their move away from OzTAM ratings, to SBS's opt-out feature for sports betting/alcohol/fast food advertising on SBS On Demand and their Net Zero challenge to the rest of the Aussie media industry. Plus, both have sizeable content slates to discuss that are heavy with Aussie drama, light entertainment, and documentary...and both focused very heavily on their respective streaming solutions.
At the SBS event, Molk also spoke with Kathryn Fink (Director of Television) and Aunty Rhoda Roberts AO (Indigenous Elder-in-Residence) about their roles within the organisation and particularly Aunty Rhoda's vision for the Calling Country opener to the event - which she also arranged for Nine's Upfront event.
