I'm trying to eat more protein and fewer carbs these days. In English, we often say low-carb. That means we try to eat fewer carbohydrates, like sugar, bread, pasta, rice, or white flour.

But there is one little problem.

I love pancakes.

Maybe you understand me. You want to eat healthier, but then you think, "Oh, pancakes would be nice." And suddenly, your healthy plan is in danger.

So today, let's learn some useful English vocabulary about making a healthier pancake. Not a perfect pancake. Not a magic pancake. But a simple pancake with more protein and fewer carbs than a normal pancake.

The level of intensity and the purpose escalates from shouting, to yelling, and lastly screaming. Shout and yell are very similar, but if one shouts in anger, we often call that "yelling" rather than "shouting. Today, I am going to talk about a very interesting topic. Plateaus when learning English.

Ok, so…what is a plateau? A plateau occurs when you stop your progress despite continuing to do "all the right things". An interesting expression for this situation is: to hit a plateau. For example:

It seems I hit a plateau, because I can't see any progress with my English, and I'm still studying really hard!

More literally, a plateau is a large flat area of land. This definition makes total sense, because if you are walking on a plateau, you are not going up or down. You stay at the same height.

Example 1: Actual

This one's a classic false friend.

In Spanish, "actual" or in Portuguese "atual" means "current" or "present."

But in English, "actual" means real or true — not "current."

So if you say: 👉 "My actual job is very interesting," you probably mean: "My current job."
