South Africa proved why they are the number 1 side in the world claiming the series 3–1, so where does that leave the All Blacks heading towards the Rugby World Cup?
For this episode I'm joined by Searley as we cover:

Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 42min - 488 - Dr Kerry Spackman- What a Lad
Dr Kerry Spackman has spent decades studying one fascinating question — what separates the very best from everyone else?
As a cognitive neuroscientist and high-performance consultant, Kerry has worked with Formula One legends, Olympians, key All Blacks and some of the world's highest performers, helping them understand how the brain works and how to perform when it matters most.
In this episode of What a Lad, Kerry shares some incredible insights from his career. From working with three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart and discovering his relentless attention to detail, to seeing firsthand the work ethic and mindset required to become a world champion.
Kerry also breaks down the science behind elite performance — why athletes choke under pressure, how the best performers see things others don't, why being the best youngster doesn't guarantee future success, and how our emotions and experiences can shape the way we think and behave.
Some parts that stood out for me in this episode were…
Working with Sir Jackie Stewart and discovering what made him so different
The incredible work ethic Kerry has witnessed from world champions
Why some Wimbledon champions can predict where a serve is going before the ball is even hit
Why thinking too much under pressure can actually make you perform worse
Why being the best athlete at 16 doesn't mean you'll become the best as an adult
The mentality behind Hamish Bond and Eric Murray's incredible success
Why there are no shortcuts when it comes to becoming world-class
How confidence can be built just like a muscle
How emotional experiences from our past can continue to influence us years later
Why Kerry believes we have a far greater ability to change ourselves than we realise
This is one of those episodes that will make you think differently about performance, confidence and what we're actually capable of. Whether you're an athlete, coach, business owner or simply someone wanting to improve, there's plenty of gold in this one.
If you enjoy hearing how some of the world's best think and what we can learn from them, you'll love this episode.

Fri, 21 Aug 2026 - 54min - 484 - Uilisi Halaholo- What a Lad
Uilisi Halaholo has a story so good it was one of the reasons I started this podcast. A naturally gifted player from a young age, who was heading down the wrong path to make the most of his talent. Caught up in the wrong lifestyle, drinking and getting into trouble on a regular basis.
A turning point came when he became a young father ultimately forced him to change direction. He put down the bottle, transformed himself physically and decided to give rugby a genuine crack. That decision started a journey that would take him from fighting for an opportunity with the Southland Stags, to the Hurricanes, winning a Super Rugby title, moving across the world to Cardiff and eventually representing Wales.
But reaching the top didn't mean the challenges stopped. Willis opens up about the criticism he received for representing Wales, devastating injuries, missing the opportunity to play against the All Blacks, losing a close family member, financial uncertainty and one of the darkest periods of his career.
Some parts that stood out for me in this episode were…
What his life as a teenager was like!
Why having his daughter changed his mindset.
Why the move to Southland was the best thing for him
Why he chose a contract with the Hurricanes over other offers
How he ended up on a Wider Squad contract in 2016 the year he started in the final!
The decision to move to Cardiff
The brutal run of injuries and juggling being a father to 5 girls
How all of those highs and lows shaped the person he is today
As you’ll hear Uilisi is a lad! His story is an incredible example of how much can change when you decide to take control of your life. Plenty of laughs in this one, but also some incredibly raw and powerful moments.
As always, if you enjoy the episode please give it a like, subscribe to the channel and share it with a mate.

Dan Kirkpatrick was an age grade superstar who was starting Super Rugby with the Hurricanes at just 20 years old. He’s a guy I always remember as being just a genuine good guy and he’s had a hell of a journey both on and off the field
In this episode of What a Lad, Dan opens up about becoming a father at just 19 and the challenges of balancing that with professional rugby, why he decided to leave New Zealand at 23 despite still having an All Blacks dream, and the serious injuries that eventually contributed to the end of his career.

- Becoming a dad at 19 while trying to establish himself in professional rugby

Kurt Eklund has one of the most unique journeys in New Zealand rugby. A Super Rugby champion, Māori All Blacks captain and one of the most respected hookers in the country, Kurt's path to the top was anything but conventional.
He spent eight years working as a builder, and admits he never thought professional rugby was a realistic goal. After only starting two games for Auckland across four seasons, a devastating knee injury left him ready to walk away from rugby altogether. But after losing his mum to breast cancer, everything changed. Determined to make her proud, Kurt found a new purpose, reignited his love for the game, and eventually made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues at the age of 28.

Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 1h 18min - 481 - Antonio Shalfoon- What a Lad
Antonio Shalfoon is someone who is a very different person off the field than he may seem on it. Known as a bit of a grub on the field, off the field he is one of the greats and his journey to professional rugby is as inspiring as any.
To start he wasn't offered his first full Super Rugby contract until the age of 26 after years of grinding away in club rugby, moving provinces to chase opportunities, and overcoming setbacks that would have made most people give up. Add to that Antonio opens up about the frightening story of being diagnosed with myocarditis, where he was told he may never play the game again.
Some other parts that stood out for me in this episode were…
- Hearing about the time he had a fight with a kids dad while playing Cricket
- Why he got punched in the head in his first Waikato training
- The scary heart condition that nearly ended his rugby career
- His pathway into the Crusaders and what kept him going
- His selection into the Maori All Blacks and what that mean for him
- Why he's signed in Japan for next season
And plenty more great yarns.
Antonio is exactly the type of person you want around a rugby team. He's funny, authentic, incredibly resilient and proof that there is no single pathway to achieving your goals. This was an awesome conversation and one I know you'll enjoy.

Wed, 17 Sep 2025 - 1h 25min - 437 - Holly Parkes on What a Lad
In this powerful episode I’m joined by Holly Parkes, someone who lived through the reality of caring for Shane Christie in his final years. Holly has bravely come on the podcast not for herself, but to continue Shane’s mission, to shine a light on the devastating impact of brain injuries and to give others a clearer understanding of what life with CTE really looks like.
She opens up about what it was like supporting Shane day-to-day, the heartbreaking changes she witnessed, and the strength it took to stand by him as he fought through some heavy paranoia episodes. Holly also shares her own journey — the lessons, the love, and the hope she wants to pass on to players, families, and anyone impacted by brain injury.
This was the hands down the heaviest podcast I've ever done. It’s raw, honest and emotional, but above all it’s a conversation that Holly wanted to have so that Shane’s suffering wasn’t in vain. This is an episode that will move you, challenge you, and hopefully help those who might be facing similar battles.

Wed, 25 Jun 2025 - 1h 40min - 425 - Michael Fatialofa- Fan Favourite
For this weeks Fan Favourite episode we throw back to one of the most powerful episodes to date, I’ll always remember this episode for the feeling of goosebumps I got down my spine as Michael Fatialofa shared his incredible journey. Fats was one of the toughest players on the field I ever played with and he proved he was even tougher off it after a life changing tackle.
The former Auckland, Southland and Hurricanes star was over in the UK playing for Worcester, when he was hit awkwardly in a tackle that caused him to be Paralysed from the neck down. He was told he will never walk again! From that moment his life had changed forever and hearing the battle he has gone through the last 3 years left me feeling inspired, sad and proud of what he has been able to achieve.
This episode is an awesome reminder to be truely grateful for everything you have in your life, as like in Michaels case it can literally be taken away from you overnight. I'm so grateful to Fat's for coming on What a Lad and speaking so openly about his journey, it is one of the most powerful and inspiring episodes ever!

Sat, 14 Jun 2025 - 1h 30min - 424 - Scott Waldrom- What a Lad
This one has it all — Scott Waldrom, one of the most explosive loose forwards to play the game, jumps on for an absolute ripper of a chat and does not hold back. From growing up as a rugby super fan idolising his hero’s to playing with legends like Jonah Lomu, Jerry Collins, Christian Cullen and Justin Marshall, to getting dropped from Sevens after a scrap in Lower Hutt, Scooters career is full of highs, lows, and unreal yarns.
We talk about:
His early days which involved plenty of battles with younger brother Thomas WaldromDebuting with Jonah Lomu and being starstruck in trainingGetting told he was too small for NPC and proving everyone wrongNational Nude Dayand bar vouchers Being told his foot injury meant his rugby career was over — and then making it backGetting named in the All Blacks squad and wondering if he belongedThe brutal truth about injuries, pressure, drinking culture, and bouncing backCoaching with the NZ Sevens, a scary health scare and life after footyHonest, hilarious, and full of insight — this one’s got everything. Sat, 07 Jun 2025 - 1h 36min - 423 - Marty Banks- What a Lad
Marty Banks was a cult hero, fans loved him. He looked like your average kiwi bloke, tall, low muscle mass and ran a distinctive curly mop. On the field he was a point scoring machine, he kicked goals from everywhere and made a habit of scoring long range tries which his deceptive pace.
That's the Marty we all knew from the screen. The Marty you'll hear from in this episode is the one who struggled with self confidence, the one who battled through serious injury pain and the one who has had his challenges transitioning into post footy.
Marty played all around the world and experienced so much from the game, having played in Russia, Italy, Japan, Refton, Nelson, Wellington and Dunedin. He's someone who always enjoyed a good time and never took himself to seriously, he even famously chopped a beer a fan threw at him before kicking a conversion to beat Taranaki!
He's definitely a massive lad so it was awesome to get him on What a Lad again.

Sat, 24 May 2025 - 1h 22min - 422 - Mark Stafford- Fan Favourite
We got back to an early fan favourite for this one with the great Mark Stafford!
The beauty of a podcast, you think you know someone well, then you sit with them on the podcast and you are absolutely blown away with their story. That is exactly how this episode with the great man Mark Stafford aka Staffy went.
Staffy has had an incredible journey to become the face of the TAB and the face of sport here in NZ but he certainly had a few bumps along the way. He shares some mind blowing stories in this episode including one how he died in a car crash but was brought back to life, in an event that ended his rugby career.
Staffy also gives some unreal insight in to what goes on behind the scenes at the tab and some unbelievable match fixing stories.
I loved this episode as it has a bit of everything in it and you can hear what a genuinely great lad Staffy is!
If you enjoy this episode as always please share it, this is a great one to share with anyone who is having a tough time.

Sat, 17 May 2025 - 1h 34min - 421 - Ioane Moananu- What a Lad
"Who's that new hooker at the Crusaders?" That's a question I'm hearing everywhere! Well in fact that man is Ioane Moananu and this is your chance to hear all about this great man in his first ever podcast. Now Ioane is incredibly humble and down to earth with a infectious laugh and cool story. From struggling to start for Counties Manakau to becoming arguably the form hooker of Super Rugby Ioane has had an incredible 12 months and the future is so bright for this great man.
This episode is a good reminder of when you play the game because you love it, the setbacks become easier to handle. Ioane has had plenty of challenging injuries early in his career and his mum recommended he shouldn't play anymore. That was never an option for Ioane who has a passion for the game.
It's also a reminder that as you move into the professional game, all those professional habits like recovery, sleep, nutrition all add up to make a massive difference in performance as we've seen with Ioane. So there is plenty of great advice in this one!

Sat, 10 May 2025 - 1h 01min - 420 - Scott Fuglistaller- What a Lad
Scott Fuglistaller was one of those champion team mates who did everything he could to be the best he could be. Unfortunately for the self acclaimed battler it was just never quite enough during his time at the Hurricanes competing with some pretty gifted athletes. He found a way though with moves to the Highlanders and then the Melbourne Rebels for him to become a regular Super Rugby starter and even captain. Sitting at a natural weight of around 80kgs, Scotty had to work so hard in the gym and with his diet to get to a weight that he could survive in the forwards at Super Rugby level. That came at a price, having 11 major surgeries during his career which took it's toll.
Some other parts that stood out for me in this one were..
The freedom Scotty had growing up which meant he grew up quick
How finding rugby was a turning point in his life
How he got from 80kg to 106kgs
His battles with self confidence and why he played his best under pressure
Why he moved to Japan and his time playing there
The struggle of life after rugby
And how he landed in his current role of helping retired players tranisition with the NZRPA.
As you'll hear Scotty has had a journey to get where he is, he's such a top man who will always put others first. Let me know what stood out for you in this one in the comments 👇

Sat, 26 Apr 2025 - 1h 23min - 419 - Charlie Gubb- Fan Favourite
Voted by you guys as the funniest episode ever!
Charlie Gubb is one of my all time favourite Warriors, not just because of the way he played on the field (even though he was an absolute animal) but more importantly because of how big of a lad that he is off it.
Gubby is the kind of team mate everyone loves to have in the team environment, loves a yarn, loves banter and just loves being around the lads. What I didn't realise before going into this podcast was the incredible journey Rugby League took him on!
Some of the interesting points were..
How he made his own highlights package and posted it to all the NRL clubs to get his first opportunity,
How he eventually worked his way into the Warriors and some classic stories from his time with them,
Why he moved to the Raiders (another crazy story that) followed by a move to the UK,
His battles with concussion and mental health,
Why he walked out on his contract in the UK,
and how he ended up starting up Wellingtons favourite porta loo company, Porta Kings.
This is without a doubt one of the funniest episodes so far. I found myself laughing away through this episode at the time and then in the edit. At the end of this episode you'll realise why everyone regards the great Charlie Gubb as one of the all time great team mates.

Sat, 19 Apr 2025 - 1h 37min - 418 - Taha Kemara- What a Lad
Taha Kemara is one of the most talented players in the country, he's fast, he's tough, he has an incredible skillset and more importantly he is a champion lad! For a 21 year old he has certainly experienced plenty of highs and lows from the game already some parts that stood out for me were..
- Growing up as a bigger sized kid which lead him to playing prop until college.
- His time at Hamilton Boys and the influence Nigel Hotham had on him
- Signing with the Crusaders for 3 years straight out of school
- How he's learnt from Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Cruden, Fergus Burke, James O'Connor, Stephen Donald in his first few years.
- He shares his memory from the moment he ruptured his bowel in the NPC
- The challenges involved with moving away from home
- What lies ahead and heaps more.
As you'll hear Taha is such a good human, hard to believe he is only 21! The potential he has is massive and I'm sure you will enjoy following his journey after hearing what a lad he is!

Sat, 12 Apr 2025 - 1h 03min - 417 - Robbie Flynn- Fans Favourite
After 5 years of What a Lad here is one of your selected favourite episodes with the great Robbie Flynn. Robbie is was widely regarded as one of the most talented players in the country but as we all know talent will only get you so far. The beauty of this episode is how honest Robbie is with what held him back from fulfilling his potential.
Robbie Flynn really should be a household name. He should be known as a rugby player who played at the highest level, with the natural talent that he had. Unfortunately, Robbie blew chance, after chance, after chance, as he struggled with self discipline and like many talented kids, he just kind of expected things to happen.
Hearing Robbie talk about his upbringing was incredible and to say he had a tough start to life would be a massive understatement. His love for rugby throughout the episode is clear and self confidence that he has is refreshing to hear.
I hope you all find this episode as inspiring and funny as I did and if you know a young talented athlete please send it on to them

Sun, 30 Mar 2025 - 1h 19min - 415 - Harry Wilson- What a Lad
Harry Wilson in 2023 missed out on the Wallabies RWC squad and was even struggling to make the Australia A side! Fast forward to 2024 and he is not just in the Wallabies but he's captaining his country to some of the best form they have been in for a long time. For the last 5 years Harry has been one of the best loose forwards in Super Rugby, where his work rate and collisions are up there with the best in the world! At only 25 years old, he's got a massive future still ahead of him!
Some other parts that stood out for me in this one were..
His mindset off a goal line dropout
Hearing his pathway to the Wallabies through Brothers Rugby Club and the Reds
Why he choose rugby over cricket
How he dealt with being in and out of the Wallabies for several years
Where he feels Australia Rugby is at right now
Why he decided to stay in Australia for 4 more years

Sun, 16 Mar 2025 - 1h 00min - 414 - Kyle Preston- What a Lad
Kyle Preston is someone who deserves every bit of success he gets. His work ethic is unmatched and to hear his journey and how he has stuck to the plan even when he wasn't getting the rewards was truely inspiring. Having had one of the all time great Super Rugby debuts a few weeks ago scoring 3 tries, it was an opportunity for Kyle to show the world he was as ready as he knew he was. Whether it was doing body weight exercises till tears, kicking and passing at the park by himself for 2-3 a day or avoiding all junk food from a young age, Kyle has definitely made plenty of sacrifices to get his opportunity.
Some other parts that stood out for me were..
Where this drive for Kyle to train like he does come from
How he handled non selection for being "too small"
How hard the juggling of roofing and chasing the professional rugby dream is
Why he decided to move to the Crusaders over his hometown Hurricanes
Kyle clears the air on who is dad really is
And heaps more!
As you'll hear Kyle is committed to being the best player he can be and its clear that he has a huge future ahead of him. I hope you enjoy the episode and if you do please give it a share.

Sun, 02 Mar 2025 - 1h 02min - 413 - Christian Lio-Willie- What a Lad
The fact that Christian Lio-Willie is a qualified dentist still blows my mind! Almost every player I have spoken to has said it's too hard to juggle both but this man has done it! How he has got to this point has been some effort, juggling huge days of study while playing professional rugby, he mentions he had to plan every minute of the day.
Having focused on his study straight out of school after a recommendation from his mum, Christian felt like he may have missed the boat on his rugby career as his peers all started making the teams. After an outstanding club season and then a very impressive debut for Otago, he'd done enough to impressed Razor to get him up to the Crusaders. A few years later after a couple of outstanding seasons for the Crusaders he was called up as an injury replacement into the All Blacks.
This episode was inspiring hearing how hard Christian hustled to set himself up to succeed not just on the field but off it. He speaks openly about the struggles and has plenty of good yarns. If you enjoy this episode or there is a young player out there trying to juggle sport and study, please share it on to them.

Sun, 16 Feb 2025 - 1h 04min - 412 - Morgan Mitchell- What a Lad
Get ready for one of the most inspiring episodes yet with the legendary lad Morgan Mitchell. Born deaf, Morgan’s journey to becoming a professional rugby player was never going to be easy. Although he was an absolute beast on the rugby field from a young age, he was always told that he would never be able to play professional rugby. Thankfully the man who is known for his stubbornness was not having a bar of it and did manage to debut for his beloved Southland stags in 2014. He has since gone on to play over 50 games for the Stags as well as playing overseas with the Toronto Arrows
Kamaishi Seawaves and Houston SaberCats.
This story is a great one about never giving up on your dreams and a great reminder of some of the obstacles you can overcome when you put your mind to it. Morgy is such a champion, a very funny man and like his brother Brayden can tell a hell of a yarn. It was an honour to be the first podcast to share Morgans journey and if you enjoy this episode then I ask if you could please like the video and let me know what you enjoyed about this one in the comments.

Sun, 02 Feb 2025 - 1h 13min - 411 - Jack Mesley- What a Lad
With Super Rugby just around the corner, who better to talk to than the Super Rugby CEO Jack Mesley. The fact that Jack was keen to come on What a Lad and share his very honest thoughts on the game and where it is heading, is proof that this man will do what he can to grow the game.
Transparency was a big part of what Jack wants to see going forward and he certainly leading the way with how open he was around the challenges Super Rugby is facing but also some great ideas he has around the opportunities we have in the game. We speak about the highly anticipated fantasy rugby game that was be live for the 2025 Super Rugby season which will be an absolute game changer.
I left this conversation very exciting about the 2025 Super Rugby season, I do believe it will be one of the best yet and I was also left excited about where the competition and the game is heading. Jack will be an outstanding addition to the competition, he's a passionate rugby man who is a massive lad and I'm sure you'll enjoy this insight.

Tom Walsh has been one of the best shot-putters in the world for the last decade so it was an honour to get him on What a Lad for this one.
Plenty of people have suggested over the years to get him on and I can see why, he isn’t just good at what he does but he’s a massive lad with an incredible mindset which has seen him win Gold Medals at the World Champs (outdoor and indoor) and the Commonwealth games while twice picking up a Bronze at the Olympics
Some parts that stood out for me were..
How he is sometimes awkwardly mistaken for the great Joe Moody.
Growing up with Dyslexia and the challenges that came with that.
His upbringing in all sports, a rugby no8, cricket wizard and shot put beast.
How he ended up in shot-put and the unique lifestyle of a shot-putter
Why he kept throwing at this years Olympics even with a torn abductor
As well as plenty of great advice for everyone!
As you’ll hear Tom Walsh is a very likeable character, who has had an incredible career to date and the best thing is that it is not over yet. Hearing the mindset that Tom has, I've got no doubt there's more success to come for this great New Zealanders.

Sun, 15 Dec 2024 - 1h 21min - 409 - Brayden Mitchell- What a Lad
Everyone who has played with Brayden Mitchell will testify that he is one of the greatest lads to play the game, he was a champion team mate on and off the field, who loved a good time and could always back it up when on the pitch. Some of the stories and reflections that the man they call Scratcher has in this episode were incredible to hear. He was so honest, held back nothing and can tell a seriously good yarn!
Some bits that stood out for me in this one were...
How hard the struggle of retiring from rugby due to a neck injury was for him
His relationship with gambling throughout his career
Getting his first contract straight out of school.
Dealing with a lack of confidence in himself
His relationship with alcohol during his career and during the transition post footy
Dealing with injuries and his regret in how he attacked his rehab
Becoming the Stags captain and the pressure involved with that
And honestly some of the best behind the scene stories of a professional rugby player you will hear.
I've got so much time for Scratcher, just a champion human who played the game for enjoyment and he certainly did that! If you enjoy this episode please give it a share and let me know what stood out for you in the comments.

Mark Nawaqanitawase has had one of the most eventful 12 months in sport! Firstly heading to the Rugby World Cup with the Wallabies before changing code to the 7’s format of the game for the Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on a medal. He then changed codes again, this time to the 13 man game playing NRL for the Sydney Rooster to cap off what was an incredible 12 months.
What stood out for me in this one was..
How his Fijian heritage plays a significant role in his identity and sports career.
He emphasizes the importance of having fun while playing sports.
How his Waratahs debut in Super Rugby was a dream come true for him.
What it was like debuting for the Wallabies.
How his transition to the Aus 7s team was a rewarding challenge for him.

Sun, 24 Nov 2024 - 1h 41min - 406 - Hugh Pyle- What a Lad
This week on What a Lad we are joined by Hugh Pyle who in my opinion is the greatest Australian rugby player never to be capped by the Wallabies. Standing at over 2 meters tall, Hugh's combination of skillset and workrate has seen him have a remarkable career firstly in Australia with the Rebels before moving to France, where he became a centurion with Stade Français. He finished off in Japan with Toshiba before calling time on his Rugby career.
In his podcast debut, Hugh shares candid insights about his life post-rugby, including his transition to a career as a mortgage broker. He dives into his unique method of reflecting on his career through four key pillars: enjoyment, playing form, salary, and game time, revealing the lessons he learned along the way.
Hugh also talks about plenty of challenges he faced while playing which included battling with dodgy knees, adjusting to life in different parts of the world and even dealing with a serious brain injury.
As you'll hear, Hugh is a massive lad, someone who's reflective personality makes for thought provocative content, he also has a great sense of humor, and can tell a yarn. I'm sure you'll enjoy this one and if you do please give it a share so I can keep bringing you great guest like Hugh.

Sat, 16 Nov 2024 - 1h 15min - 405 - Hamish Kerr- What a Lad
Hamish Kerr is officially the greatest High Jumper in the world having recently won Gold at the Paris Olympics. However, what you're about to hear in this episode is an insight into the mind of the Olympic champion and you'll be amazed at how close he came to bowing out in the Qualifiers which in his mind would have meant retirement. The pressure that come on one single jump is insane and when you need to be relaxed and in flow when jumping how you handle that pressure is the difference.
Some other cool parts of this episode that should out for me was..
Growing up playing lot's of sports, playing on the wing in rugby
How at the age of 11 he was arguably faster than Rieko Ioane
His journey into High Jump and why he quit after school
An insight in to the training schedule of an individual athlete
How important your mindset in as a world class athlete
Why he wasn't keen to settle on the split gold medal
What made him take off to the middle of the Javelin field once he had won the gold
And heaps more!
As you'll hear Hamish is a very smart, open and honest man who gives so much gold (excuse the pun) in this episode. What he has done for High Jump and Athletics in this country has been massively and he is such a champion! If you enjoyed this episode please give it share and I will continue to bring you more great guests like Hamish.

Christian Cullen is a legend. You only have to watch a few minutes of his highlights package to remind yourself how good he really was. The speed and agility, his ability to change direction at full pace, his deceptive strength, add on top his attacking mindset and his braveness in defence! He was a joy to watch. He's also such a champion man who prefers not doing things like this so super grateful to get him on.
In this whopping 2 hour episode some parts that stood out for me
How the working the milk run growing up helped his rugbyDebuting for Horowhenua straight out of school against JonahMaking the NZ 7's sides with Titch and stories from Hong Kong and the Commonwealth gamesThe old school nature of the All Black environment he went in toI loved hearing about some of the greatest tries ever scoredHow he ended up at 13 for a RWCHis relationship with John MitchellWhy he left to Munster and his time playing over thereWhy he hated warming up And heaps heaps more.Growing up Christian Cullen was my absolute hero, he inspired me to play the game so to sit down with him and have this conversation was truely incredible. What I'm sure will stand out for you is how humble and down to earth he is, you certainly wouldn't think I'm talking to one of the greatest to ever play the game listening to this. Sat, 19 Oct 2024 - 1h 59min - 401 - Kane Barrett- What a Lad
When we talk about the greatest rugby family in this country ever, it's almost impossible to go past the Barretts. Kevin 'Smylie' Barrett was a Taranaki legend who also played for the Hurricanes, Beauden is a 100 game All Black, RWC winner and 2 x World Player of the year, Scott has captained the Crusaders to 4 Super Rugby titles and is the current Captain of the All Blacks, Jordie at just 27 has racked up over 50 games for the All Blacks and dominated where ever he plays. Kane was tracking the same path before 2 significant head injuries forced him to retire at just 22 years old.
It was awesome to sit down with Kane and talk through where he is at now and how he looks back on his career, some bits that stood out for me were..
The battle between the Barrett brothers to be the Alpha growing up How Kane would fire up the Francis Douglas 1st XV side, once resulting in a yellow card The time Kane picked up his coach Neil Barns as a 16yo and dropped him on his head His pathway into NZ Schools for 2 years, Taranaki and the Blues What forced Kane into retirement and how hard that was to deal with How he looks at his brothers successful careers His new life of the farm And heaps more! This was such an incredible insight from such a champion lad, you can only admire the way Kane has gone about his life post footy and it was so cool to hear about his journey.

Fri, 11 Oct 2024 - 1h 03min - 400 - Aaron Mauger- What a Lad
Aaron Mauger loves rugby, he's so passionate about the game and he is so grateful for his involvement in the game and he's certainly been involved!
From playing for Canterbury straight out of school, to becoming a Crusader and All Black not long after. He then moved to Leicester were he won premierships over there, before injuries forced him to retire at just 30. Post playing he was always going to stay in the game and with his incredible rugby knowledge has gone on to become a great coach!
Some bit's that stood out for me were...
His relationship with his brother Nathan and their mindset playing together How hard it can be for a young 10 to come in boss the team around especially when one was your teacher the year before The massive influence Andrew Mertens had on him The night of the 96-12 win over the Waratahs and the story behind the front flip The 2003 and 2007 RWC experiences The struggle of wanting to keep playing when the body is breaking down The reality of the life as a coach and the impact that can have on your family And heaps moreI loved hearing about Azza's mindset on how he approaches life, he's very grateful for every thing and he has a real passion for the game of rugby. It made me realise how good this game is, so many great people involved in the game and Aaron Mauger is certianly one of those.

The man who debuted for the Hurricanes 10 years after his first class debut for Canterbury, the man known as Frank put in a 7 minute shift that will never be forgotten at the Hurricanes. The story of Laurence Corlett is one that has so many layers, he's a true yes man who put himself out there and he can tell one heck of a story.
Some bits that stood out for me in this one were...
How Dane Coles gave him the opportunity to get a Super Rugby cap Why he had to keep his beanie on during his first meeting with Steve Hansen His battles with throwing as a hooker throughout his career How he ended up at a student flat after signing his first Super Rugby contract Becoming the Taranaki CEO and the struggles involved with that role Surviving a Heart Attack! Sat, 28 Sep 2024 - 1h 14min - 398 - Colin Cooper- What a Lad
Colin Cooper is one of the great great human beings, he's one of the wisest souls on the planet – a true legend of rugby in New Zealand with an incredible career spanning over four decades!
Having played over 100 matches for Taranaki and represented the NZ Maori, and Junior All Blacks Colin has left a huge mark on the game as a player. After hanging up his boots, Colin transitioned to coaching, where he made his mark as the coach of the NZ U21s, an assistant at the Crusaders, the head coach of the Hurricanes, and the Chiefs, and of course, led the Taranaki Bulls to an NPC championship.
He has also coached the Junior All Blacks and the NZ Maoris, showcasing a remarkable versatility in the sport. Beyond his impressive accolades, anyone who has worked with Colin will know that he is one kindest and most genuine people you'll ever meet. I've got so much respect for Colin and learnt plenty in this episode so I know you will enjoy this one.

Sun, 22 Sep 2024 - 1h 21min - 397 - Carlo Tizzano- What a Lad
Carlo Tizzano has burst on to the international rugby scene this season with an incredible work rate and tackle success rate and after this conversation it's easy to understand why.
Growing up as an angry child, with 3 other brother constantly winding him up the aggression in his game was always going to be there. Having started out as a winger, he decided to move in to 7 a move with had plenty of doubters and even cost him a spot in the academy. However, as you'll hear Carlo has an incredible self belief, while also having incredible discipline to achieve goals quickly.
Carlo has also recently been diagnosed with ADHD which he describes as an absolute game changer and has made sense of a lot of his behaviour growing up especially at school. His ability to focus on tasks especially in games has been a big part of his rapid rise.
The best part about this episode is that Carlo is an absolute lad who doesn't filter anything, he tells it straight and is very true to himself which always makes for the best podcasts. I'm sure by the end of this you'll have a new favourite Wallaby!

Sat, 14 Sep 2024 - 1h 24min - 396 - Ross Devlin - Living with a Brain Injury
Ross Devlin was your classic old school player, he threw his body and head into everything and was too tough to ever want to come off. Now Ross is convinced that he has CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) from multiple concussions which included a very significant car crash. He now just wants to help others who may have it or even better prevent people from getting it.
The key message in this episode is to try and help players, coaches, parents or whoever, that concussions and multiple concussions need to be taken more seriously at all levels of any sport. It's never an injury to tough it out because the danger and potential long term affects are massive. If you know someone this episode might help, please pass it on.

Sun, 08 Sep 2024 - 37min - 395 - Bailey Simonsson- What a Lad
Bailey Simonsson is one of the best outside backs in the NRL and it was crazy to hear how close he was to giving up on the game! After a couple of years with the BOP Steamers and a short stint with the All Blacks 7's side Bailey returned home back to Australia with no professional contract. 12 months later and he's playing in the NRL final for the Canberra Raiders.
This episode is another case of the different pressures that are placed on these guys in both codes of footy. The pressure to take your opportunities when you're starting out, which was highlighted for Bailey with the NZ 7's side. How to deal with imposter syndrome, which he felt while training with the Chiefs as a teenager. The long term injury set backs which Bailey has had his fair share of including his current ACL recovery! Also dealing with the abuse that comes with a low fantasy NRL score.
As you'll hear Bailey is a champion lad who has a real good energy and plenty of cool insights into his journey and rugby league. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share so that we can continue to bring more great guest like this.

Sun, 01 Sep 2024 - 1h 10min - 394 - Chris Eaton- What a Lad
The Chris Eaton episode is one that left my cheeks sore from laughing so much, while also pulled on the heartstrings to bring tears in the eyes. This story is one of the most incredible stories yet.
From growing up in Flaxmere which he would describe as "the hood", staying out of trouble growing up was about as hard as keeping the Hurricanes 9 jersey off TJ Perenara. After several last chances with Hawkes Bay relating off field incidents and a contract which involved no alcohol, Chris got through it to end up playing 114 games for his beloved Magpies. He then had 2 good seasons with the Hurricanes in Super Rugby which he shares plenty of good stories from those times.
Then the moment that changed his life forever. The tragic death of his wife. Hearing him talk about the moment he had to tell his 4 year old daughter the news was the saddest thing I've heard on the podcast. The way he bounced back from that tragic event is so inspiring and hearing how his life is now is very cool to hear.
Chris is a very funny story teller and some of the yarns in this one go straight to the all time hall of fame. I know you'll enjoy this one and when you do please give it a share so I can continue to bring you champion lads like this man.
