Anele and the Club on 947

Anele has returned from her Norwegian adventure chasing the Northern Lights, but she's brought back a rather interesting story from the cruise!

While on board, she met Nikos, a retired Greek landlord who hasn't increased the rent for his young tenants in four years because they've told him they're struggling financially. In fact, just last month, he renewed their lease for another year at exactly the same rental amount.

Then their geyser breaks, and Nikos goes over to sort it out himself. But when he arrives, he spots something rather interesting in the driveway: a brand-new, very expensive car!

The tenants are excited to show it off, completely unaware that Nikos is standing there wondering how people who supposedly can't afford a rent increase have managed to afford a luxury vehicle.

When asked what he planned to do, his response was brilliant: he's already signed a 12-month lease, but his calendar has a reminder for month eleven!

Hi Anele,

I’ve been listening to the show for years and I really need advice, so here goes.

I’m a junior accountant at a company in Sandton. Four months ago my manager added me to the leadership team’s WhatsApp group by mistake. I never said a word. I just read. Parking bay fights, someone stealing the Woolies muffins from the boardroom, and a two-week war over whether we should replace the Ricoffy with a coffee machine.

Then on Tuesday night the CFO posted next year’s budget. I opened it and saw Row 47 had been counted twice. That’s a R1.2 million mistake. Six managers replied “Looks good.”

I typed a message, deleted it, typed it again, and then I hit send: “Row 47 is double counted.” The group went completely silent. Thirty seconds later, my manager called me. I’m scared to tell you what happened next, but I need to know first: did I do the right thing?

There’s growing chatter that some travellers (especially Americans) are booking cruises partly because the onboard medical centres or ports of call offer cheaper doctor visits, dental work or basic procedures than they can get at home.

Medical travel (also called medical tourism) is when people travel to another country specifically for cheaper or faster treatment. Some are even using cruise holidays for basic check-ups or dental work in the ports.

In the United States a routine dental check-up can cost you three or four times what it costs in South Africa. A simple tooth filling that sets an American back thousands of rands can be done for a fraction of that price in India or Thailand. Even something as basic as a doctor’s visit or getting a broken bone treated shows huge gaps once you start comparing countries.

If you grew up with TKZee, you know Kabelo Mabalane as Bouga Luv one of the voices that helped define an era of South African music. From “Shibobo” and “Dlala Mapantsula” with TKZee to “Pantsula 4 Life” in his solo career, Kabelo has been part of the soundtrack of South Africa for decades.

Photographer Max Global Media sparked the conversation with a post saying: “When a client won’t let you post their photos” and it raises an interesting question about who actually gets to decide what happens to a photograph once it’s been taken.

Khanyi Mbau and Judith Sephuma made it all the way to the Season 3 finale of The Masked Singer SA, leaving Mzansi guessing right until the final reveal.

Khanyi had viewers trying to connect the clues to the woman behind Chopsticks, while the detectives came up with names ranging from Nandi Madida to the eventual correct guess, Khanyi Mbau. Judith Sephuma, meanwhile, kept everyone guessing as Gogga, with J’Something and Somizi eventually locking in her identity.

In the end, both stars were unmasked during the Season 3 finale, with Khanyi finishing third and Judith fourth. After weeks of performances, clues and wild detective theories, their identities were finally revealed.

Our rockstar of the season, Spotty came in with fire, energy and dance moves that had us captivated. We kept falling in love with her every week on The Masked Singer season 3.

The detectives along the way told their own story. J'Something had been thinking it was Pabi Moloi the whole time, but the dance moves made him consider another entertainer like piano sensation, Boohle. Somizi had his own "ah-ha" moment, when he saw Spotty’s performance with Robot Boii and he locked in his guess with Bontle Modiselle.

Sithelo went with actress Vathiswa Ndara, while Skhumba dropped the name Motshidisi Mohono, the sports anchor. In the end, it was Somizi who called it right. Bontle Modiselle was Spotty all along!

There is a new scam every day and the scary part is that scammers are getting much better at making them sound believable. It’s not always an obvious “Congratulations, you’ve won a million rand!” message anymore.

Sometimes it’s someone claiming to be from your bank, your car dealership, a delivery company or even asking you seemingly harmless personal questions. You might get a message saying you’ve won R1,500 from a supermarket, a call claiming there’s a problem with your car and it needs to be collected, or someone asking questions that could actually help them access your accounts or identify you.

They came in as the first-ever duo to take on The Masked Singer South Africa and from the moment Sheep hit that stage, Mzansi was hooked. The performances had the energy, the rhymes were always on point, and the clues had our detectives going in completely different directions.

Alakhe had a bit of a school emergency last week, he tore his pants at school and needed his mom, Anele, to bring him a new pair. So, naturally, he called his mom and got the rescue mission underway.

If you’ve been watching Mzansi Magic’s Nyala O, you’ll know that these aren’t exactly the picture-perfect marriages they might look like from the outside.

We received a voice note from Mrs Van Staden, a teacher at a primary school, who says her school is holding a colour-run fundraiser this Saturday and the teachers are expected to be there.

The problem? They’re not being paid for it. And that raises a very real question for teachers: when does your working week actually end?

Because teaching isn’t necessarily a “bell rings at 2pm, you go home” job. Teachers can be expected to attend parent meetings, sports events, cultural activities, school functions and other duties outside the formal school day. The official Personnel Administrative Measures actually recognise extra and co-curricular duties outside the formal school day, and say educators are expected to account for 1,800 actual working hours a year.

From 1 April 2026, qualifying micro businesses with annual turnover of up to R2.3 million can opt into the system. The first R600,000 of turnover is taxed at 0%, meaning a qualifying business can make up to R600,000 in turnover without paying Turnover Tax on that amount. And it works differently from normal income tax: instead of taxing your profit, Turnover Tax is calculated on your turnover essentially the money your business receives from its business activities. So, for example, a business with taxable turnover of R900,000 would pay R3,000 in Turnover Tax not R3,000 every month, but R3,000 for the year.

The system is optional, and you have to apply to SARS if you qualify. There are also specific eligibility requirements, so not every small business automatically qualifies. It’s essentially SARS saying: if you’re a qualifying small business, there’s a simpler tax system available but you need to know about it and choose to use it.

Pineapple consistently delivered some of the biggest performances on The Masked Singer South Africa, leaving the Super Detectives guessing about the identity behind the mask.

While J’Something, Somizi and Sithelo Shozi all mentioned Brenden Praise’s name at different points, it was Sithelo who ultimately got it right.

After performing songs across pop, R&B, EDM and amapiano, Pineapple found himself in the Danger Zone alongside Chopsticks and Gogga. Gogga was saved by the judges, leaving Pineapple and Chopsticks to battle for a place in the semi-final. Pineapple ultimately received the fewest votes and was unmasked.

The clues pointed towards Brenden’s music career, faith, upbringing and even his time on Idols South Africa. Other clues included golden trophies, coffee, travelling, a cross and a football boot.

The football clue revealed one of the more surprising parts of Brenden’s story: at 13, he attended trials with Kaizer Chiefs but was overlooked after failing to produce his birth certificate.

In the end, Sithelo correctly identified the soulful singer, former Idols South Africa runner-up, Grammy nominee, producer and entrepreneur as the man behind the Pineapple mask.

A recent Labour Court judgment has raised an interesting question about returning to a workplace after a serious dispute with your employer.

The case involves former NSFAS budget accountant Zenobia Abrahams, who was dismissed after forwarding nine confidential work emails to her personal Gmail account. A CCMA commissioner later found her dismissal substantively unfair and ordered NSFAS to reinstate her with more than R1 million in back pay. NSFAS challenged that decision, and the Labour Court has now set the CCMA award aside and referred the matter back for a fresh arbitration.

But beyond the legal battle, it raises a very real workplace question: if you were fired by your employer and had to take the company to the CCMA to fight for your job, would you actually want to go back?

Even if the outcome went in your favour and you were offered your old position back, could you comfortably return to the same workplace, work under the same management and sit alongside the people involved in your dismissal?

Would you go back to a company that fired you or would you rather take the win and move on?

Residents in Durban’s Berea say weekend nightlife has become a serious problem, with excessive noise, traffic, overcrowding, litter and partygoers spilling into the surrounding residential streets.

One resident, who has lived in the area for more than 15 years, says the disruption has become so bad that she is now considering selling her home and leaving the area.

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher is also demanding answers over what residents describe as a lack of Metro Police enforcement and response when they report problems. But it raises a bigger question: If you live in an area that becomes a popular nightlife hotspot, how much disruption should you be expected to tolerate?

Having children used to feel like one of those things that was simply part of the traditional life checklist: finish school, study or work, get married, buy a home and have kids. But is that checklist changing?

A recent News24 article looks at South Africa’s declining birth rate and asks whether parenthood is losing its place as an expected part of adult life. The latest Stats SA figures support the bigger trend: South Africa’s fertility rate has fallen from an average of 2.78 children per woman in 2008 to 2.12 in 2026, while recorded births have been declining since 2020.

But this doesn't mean South Africans have suddenly stopped having babies. The country still has a relatively young population and continues to grow. What is changing is how many children people are choosing to have and potentially when, or whether, they choose to become parents at all.

There are plenty of reasons people might be rethinking parenthood: the cost of raising children, housing, career ambitions, relationships, personal freedom and simply deciding that having children isn't part of the life they want.

Kenneth says his tenant called him in a panic because her unit was the only one without electricity. Trying to be a good landlord, he immediately called an electrician who charged a R1,250 call-out fee.

But before the electrician could even attend to the problem, the tenant called back to say she had figured it out: the DB board had tripped, and her electricity was back on.

Now Kenneth has told her that if the electrician won't refund the call-out fee, she needs to pay the R1,250. But she refuses, saying the fee isn't her responsibility.

So, who's wrong here? Should the landlord absorb the cost because it was his responsibility to sort out the electricity or should the tenant pay because the electrician was called out unnecessarily?

The latest celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer South Africa is none other than SAFTA-winning actor Tumisho Masha!

The detectives were all over the place, with guesses ranging from Sjava and S’dumo Mtshali to Sizwe Dhlomo and DJ Sabby. But Detective Sithelo Shozi got it right, correctly identifying Tumisho before his mask came off.

Tumisho, known for shows like Isidingo, Saints and Sinners and The Wild, also has major international credits, including Beyond Borders alongside Angelina Jolie.

The Leopard’s recurring mirror clues also had a meaning, Tumisho says they represented self-reflection and staying true to yourself after years in the entertainment industry.

A retired couple has sparked a family feud after buying their 32-year-old son a small house to help him get a fresh start.

The son has struggled to find direction and isn’t financially stable, so his parents say they simply wanted to give him the support he needed.

But their 27-year-old daughter is furious. She’s married, has two children and has worked hard to build a stable life independently. She says her parents have always gone the extra mile for her brother because he “needs help” while she’s been left to figure things out on her own.

Now she’s keeping her distance, accusing her parents of rewarding failure while overlooking success. The parents, however, say it’s not about favoritism,  their son simply needed more help.

After keeping the detectives and viewers guessing, King Pie was finally unmasked as comedian, musician and Radio Raps star, Rikus de Beer!

Rikus had the panel completely bamboozled as they tried to work out who was hiding behind the massive pastry costume, with guesses ranging from cricket legend AB de Villiers and kwaito icon Kabelo Mabalane to Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick and comedian Darren Maule.

J’Something eventually settled on AB de Villiers, while Somizi went with Kabelo Mabalane and Skhumba backed Mzwandile Stick. Sithelo, meanwhile, returned to her earlier guess of Darren Maule – meaning none of the detectives managed to crack the real identity.

And after weeks of clues, costumes and performances, the mystery was finally solved: King Pie was Rikus de Beer, better known as Radio Raps!

We got this voice note from Lerato, who ordered a birthday cake for her son Kumo. When she went to collect it, she realised the bakery had spelled his name incorrectly. She says she would never have given them the wrong spelling and was upset that the bakery refused to fix the cake.

And while Lerato’s frustration is understandable, it got us thinking about something bigger: how do we teach our kids to deal with disappointment when things don’t go their way?
