Her bylines are featured on Broadsheet, Lonely Planet, the Guardian, the Age and a spate of other publications. In March 2021 Levin launched The Seasoned Traveller, a website and newsletter that celebrates cultural diversity through food and encourages readers to #eatcuriously. "Find flavour in places you wouldn't realize and savour it."

Today, we're joined by one of Melbourne's favourite chefs, Ellie Bouhadana. As Head Chef at Collingwood's Hope St Radio, Ellie dishes up an ever-evolving menu that reflects a wholesome, neighbourly vibe– with souped-up snacks, fresh pastas, and familiar flavours. Now, Ellie has written her first cookbook, which is out next month. It's called Ellie's Table. It's part journal, part advice column, and part recipe book. There's a whole chapter on her famous oily focaccia, the one she makes by hand every single day at Hope Street, and the one she delivered during Melbourne's lockdowns.

It also contains stories about her family's influence on her cooking, including her dad's love of mandarins and her mother's halal bread. Ellie shares tips on how thick we should chop zucchinis, what she stocks in her pantry to make sure every meal is packed with flavour, and a recent meal she hosted with martinis and matzah balls.

Jessie Oldfield and Adam Murfet form an acclaimed directing duo, renowned for their versatile approach across narrative television, short films, and commercials. They initially gained recognition for their art-house fashion films, captivating major brands like Renault, Adidas, Country Road, Target, and Myer with their distinctive style. In 2019, Jessie and Adam first ventured into television with the creation of the half-hour comedy series 'Why Are You Like This'. Originally conceived as part of the ABC's Fresh Blood Pilot Season initiative, the duo later produced and directed the six-part series for ABC, subsequently picked up by Netflix. Their narrative TV journey continued with a directing stint on the reboot of 'Heartbreak High', earning global recognition and winning the 2023 International Emmy for Kids: Live Action. The husband-and-wife duo join the podcast to chat about their creative collaboration, horse racing, and the new season of 'Heartbreak High', premiering on April 11.

France Soir and Hector's Deli are venues that Melburnians hold dear. The former is a late-night dining institution that has served the city for 38 years and welcomed the likes of The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen through its doors. Many of our milestones have been celebrated over France Soir's creme brûlée or a dip into their renowned wine list. Hector's Deli is a more recent star of the lunchtime scene, dishing up some of Melbourne's best sandwiches. Dom Wilton, chef and owner, believes both establishments have the shared ethos of “perfecting simplicity”.

Tony Albert is one of Australia’s most prominent contemporary artists. He is an avid collector of objects, particularly those depicting Aboriginal people, and it’s this collection of Aboriginalia that underpins many themes in his artwork. Tony has conveyed large-scale artworks such as four giant bullets and three bullet shells that sit in Sydney’s Hyde Park, as well as decorating the seats in Sydney’s Allianz Stadium. Tony joins the podcast to discuss collectibles, his studio space, and his role in the Biennale of Sydney as its First Nations Curatorial Fellow.

Hannah Gadsby is one of the most in-demand comedians in Australia. They have always been a clever observationalist and captivating storyteller, but when the show Nanette first streamed on Netflix Gadsby's profile skyrocketed. Nanette was a catalyst to a whole lot of change. The show went on tour for eighteen months, Hannah published a best selling memoir and they followed up with new shows 'Douglas' and 'Body of Work'. Gadsby's new show, 'Woof', kicks off in Sydney this month, and they join Around Town to tell us all about it.

"We knew we wanted to do a trip, we didn't know we wanted to do a book" 

In 2016, writer and content producer Caroline Clements (Broadsheet’s founding editor) and her partner, photographer and environmental scientist Dillon Seitchik-Reardon, quit their jobs to begin a search for Australia’s most beautiful beaches, pools and swimming spots. The result was their book Places We Swim: part travel guide, part photo essay and part cultural study. The popularity of their first book quickly led to a second:Places We Swim Sydney and the couple will soon publish their third title Places We Swim California. Caroline and Dillon join the podcast to discuss their favourite swim spots both locally and abroad.

There’s a healthy chaos to Mona Foma. Like Mona (Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art) itself, the festival blends humour and absurdity with art from musicians and artists from around the world, stretching beyond the museum walls into Hobart and Launceston. Today, we're chatting with Malaysian chef Junda Khoo, the restaurateur behind four Ho Jiak venues in Sydney. With a background in banking, Junda's path to professional cooking was unconventional. He credits his love of flavour to his grandmother, but he really learnt to cook as a teenager when he first moved to Sydney and was given $150 per week to spend on groceries. Today, Junda relishes the opportunity to challenge the meaning of 'authentic' Malaysian food and his cooking is guided by one simple principle: 'was it delicious?'.

It all started with a stolen razor. Well, several really. Rebecca Harding would use her boyfriend's razor for its simpler and superior design. She quickly realised that women's grooming products were falling short in functionality. Enter Lui: a body-care brand that aims to elevate your everyday routine. For the past three years, Harding has worked alongside beauty writer and brand expert Ingrid Kesa to bring two products to life—a razor and shaving cream. The response has been immense. Vue de Monde, sibling venue Lui Bar and the Vue Events space on the Rialto Tower’s 55th floor are officially open again after closing in July for a far-reaching refurb and renovation. The fine-dining institution and its sky-high bar have undergone a significant revamp, and one of the biggest differences may be more noticeable online than in the restaurant itself. Miami-born chef Danielle Alvarez made a name for herself Down Under as the founding head chef of Sydney farm-to-table restaurant Fred's. Though new to the city, she quickly gained a legion of followers for her rustic, no-fuss, produce-forward cooking, honed at Alice Waters’s Californian classic Chez Panisse. She has recently been appointed Culinary Director of the Sydney Opera House's event venues. The new book contains more than 100 recipes reflecting on the influences of Danielle's life: her Cuban heritage, kitchen roles in California and Australia, adoration of Italian and French food, and the Asian flavours that have made an impact since she moved to Sydney. Danielle joins Around Town to tell us all about it.

For nine years, Officine Zero has been pouring some of the south's best coffee. 

While owner Claudio Casoni always wanted to do more with the venue, it wasn’t until he was able to take over the next-door shopfront that he could grow the business. Charlie Carrington has a lot of stamps in his passport. His restaurant, South Yarra’s Atlas Dining, is well-known for every three months completely changing the country and cuisine its menus take their inspiration from. In order to consistently pull off that feat, Carrington makes several international research trips each year. Little Havana is Charlie Carrington’s love letter to the Miami district of the same name. On previous visits to the Cuban-inspired area, he was drawn to its art, music, hole-in the bars, cigar-rolling stores and standout Cubano sandwiches. Now, he's making his own.

Pia Miranda first broke onto our screens in 2000 as a strong-willed teenager in the much-adored feature film Looking for Alibrandi. Since her iconic portrayal of Josephine Alibrandi, Pia has appeared in numerous films and TV series, including a triumphant season on Survivor. This month, Pia will be releasing her first book, Finding My Bella Vita, which takes readers from a small volcanic island in Italy to an upbringing in suburban Melbourne, casting calls in Los Angeles, and tribal councils on a Fijian beach. Nathan Toleman has a new CBD cafe. After branching into the wine bar and restaurant world with Dessous, Hazel and Liminal, the man who was a key figure in the Melbourne cafe renaissance of the early 2010s opened Square One Rialto on Monday August 21.The ambitious new concept sees him collaborating with a series of local and international chefs on dishes designed specifically for the Rialto Towers venue. The first offering features dishes from the likes of Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook), Nagesh Seethiah (Manze), Jemma Whiteman (Sydney’s Ante) and Nuno Mendes (London’s Lisboeta). Called Now or Never, the event will feature a multi-sensory dining experience by Supernormal, music festivals inside the Royal Exhibition Building, a pop-up 360-degree dome cinema and culminate in 48-hours of non-stop programming. Julieanne Blum was the head chef at Cam Miller’s Abbotsford Convent wine bar and cafe Cam’s Kiosk for six years. Now, she’s getting ready to open Julie, a new 80-seat restaurant around the corner from the wine bar in the former Lentil as Anything space. Many are calling it the opening of the year. Magnificent, resplendent, palatial, ornate – no number of adjectives really do justice to the Nomad Group’s stately new restaurant Reine. The team has taken over the aptly named Cathedral Room inside the former Melbourne Stock Exchange, a neo-gothic building at the corner of Queen and Collins streets, completed in 1891. The opulent heritage space features vaulted ceilings, gothic arches, solid granite columns, mosaic floors, limestone walls, marble dado and stained glass windows. Executive chef Jacqui Challinor joins Around Town in the restaurant's opening weeks to discuss inspiration, her favourite menu items and where she thinks Reine will be in twelve months time.

Melbourne Central's CDMX only opened last September, but the venue quickly gained a reputation as one of Melbourne’s top Mexican eateries. CDMX is known for its birria taco – a grilled corn tortilla filled with birria-braised beef brisket, salsa, coriander, onion and melted cheese, and served with a birria consommé. Up There Store was born in 2010 from a vision to bring the world’s most exclusive trainers and streetwear to Melbourne. Now, 13 years later, Up There has expanded its footprint moving from its McKillop Street boutique to an expansive new 345-square-metre flagship store in Flinders Lane. Melbourne architects Kennedy Nolan were engaged to undertake the transformation and the result is shimmering surfaces of flat and perforated galvanised steel, a palette of saturated colours and intense green flooring reminiscent of a grassy field. There’s also a “funhouse of mirrors” that makes up the sneaker wall. Plus, "it's Thai time" in Melbourne- another stellar Thai eatery opens in the CBD, serving regional Phuket cuisine alongside salty-sweet “Melbourne-style” fried chicken.

For its 71st year, MIFF promises more of what we’ve come to expect (and look forward to): the best of cinema from around the world, highly engaging documentaries and festival circuit favourites. As ever, international films will take centre stage. Korean-Canadian filmmaker Celine Song’s directorial debut Past Lives, about the reunion of two childhood friends, premiered in competition at the Berlinale and is already tipped as an Oscar contender. Melbournians can also look forward to a stunning lineup of local films including Mark Leonard Winter’s The Rooster, starring Hugo Weaving and Phoenix Raei and set in regional Victoria; This Is Going To Be Big, which follows students and staff at a specialist school in the Macedon Ranges preparing for their John Farnham-themed musical. MIFF's Artistic Director, Al Cossar, joins Around Town with his festival tips and tricks.

Aussie men’s grooming brand Stuff has been challenging norms since it launched in 2021. From this week, the retailer’s Australian stores will stock the full Stuff range, including a head-and-body wash, deodorant, face wash, a face scrub and a moisturiser– which all retail between $9 and $13 – as well as two exclusive gift kits (a skincare starter set and a skin and body kit) online. The products are all Australian-made – without parabens, sulphates or aluminium – and the bottles are 100 per cent recyclable.Founder Hunter Johnson (also founder and CEO of the Man Cave) joins the podcast to chat about the purpose-driven range and its plan to crack open the market.

When Good Days started selling banh mi during lockdown, they were so popular they’d often sell out via online orders before the doors even opened. Now they're a permanent menu fixture at Good Days Hot Bread, a dedicated banh mi shop that opened this month, further up Sydney Road. While staying true to the core tenets of the French-Vietnamese rolls – pate, mayo, coriander, pickled carrot, cucumber and a protein in a crusty baguette – these interpretations are next-level. Owner Nam Nguyen joins Around Town to discuss the new opening.

The Bear, a sharply drawn emotional rollercoaster of a show about a fine-dining chef trying to turn his family’s old-school sandwich shop around, premiered on Disney Plus in 2022 and became one of the biggest hits of the year. The show has been nominated for 13 Emmys and returns with its 'full-bodied' second season this July. Audrey Payne recently spoke with The Bear's co-executive producer, Matty Mathewson, and joins Around Town with the details.
