At Compass Bible Church, we believe that strong families are essential to the health of our church. To achieve this, we need strong, godly men to lead the way. This is the primary objective of our Men’s Bible Study. We meet every month to fellowship, study the Word of God, and participate in small group discussions.
- 31 - Assurance Grows as You Walk in the Light | 1 John 1:5-10
A man can read his Bible, pray regularly, and show up every Sunday and still lie awake wondering whether he actually belongs to God. John wrote his letter to men in exactly that condition: shaken, stagnating, unsure the faith they profess is real.
John opens with three plain things. Two of them most Christian men are already doing reasonably well. The third is the one almost nobody practices without deliberate effort, and its absence is one of the reasons men stall out, grow disenchanted with the church, or walk away from it entirely. John's argument begins not with you but with God, and where that argument lands is not where a man bracing for bad news expects it to land.

Sat, 19 Sep 2026 - 55min - 30 - The Foundation of Assurance Is Jesus | 1 John 1:1–4
Knowing that you know begins with knowing Who you know.
It's one of the most dangerous assumptions a person can make — especially where church attendance is normal and Christian language is native. John writes his letter to people whose confidence has been shaken by teachers who left, and he doesn't answer their doubt by telling them to look harder at themselves. He points them to what he heard, saw, looked upon, and touched. This first message in Knowing That You Know asks the question underneath every other question about assurance: what is your confidence actually resting on? Because the answer determines whether it holds.

Resolved: Courage to Confront
Text: Mark 6:14-30
I. Pursue Clarity About Jesus’ Identity
II. Live According to Conviction—Not Convenience
III. Courageously Confront Evil
Application Questions
- Read Mark 6:14–15 and John 1:29–30. What do people in your circles say about Jesus today? Are their views more influenced by cultural assumptions or Scripture? How does a deeper clarity about Christ change the way you live, speak, and serve?Which biblical truths are you most convinced of, to the point you would suffer for them? How are those convictions shaping your everyday decisions at home, work, or church this month?Read Mark 6:18 and Ephesians 4:15. John called out Herod’s sin directly and biblically. When you see evil celebrated around you, what’s your typical response? What would it look like to grow in convictional courage without becoming combative?Herodias wanted John killed, but Herod was drawn to him (Mark 6:20). When non-believers hear you speak truth, do they hear courage with humility, or self-righteousness? What kind of tone and life do you want your gospel witness to reflect?Read Luke 12:4–5. Where are you tempted to shrink back from confrontation because of fear? How would fear of God realign your response?
Sat, 22 Nov 2025 - 49min - 18 - Genesis 39:7-12 | Resolved: Pursuing Purity & Avoiding Temptation
Resolve to love God so much that you hate sexual sin.
Genesis 39:7-12
I. Expect Temptation’s Targeted Attacks (v.7)
II. Enumerate the Reasons Why Sin is Very Stupid (vv.8-9)
III. Draw the Battle Lines Far From Temptation—Not on the Edge (vv.10-12)
Application Questions
- Consider some of the prominent former pastors who have given in to sexual sin. What lessons can you glean from these public failures?Read Genesis 39:9 and 1 Corinthians 6:18-7:1-5. While it is true that "all sin is sin," what makes sexual immorality uniquely grievous to the Lord?Read Genesis 39:8-9 and Psalm 103:2. Start working on your own personal list: What are the reasons that giving in to sexual sin would be particularly stupid and destructive in your life? How might regularly revisiting a list like this, inspired by Psalm 103:2, fortify your love for God over sin?Read Genesis 39:10 and Matthew 5:29-30. Joseph drew his battle lines far from temptation by refusing even to "be with her" day after day. In your daily routines, where might you be "dancing on the brink" of sin, such as through media, relationships, or environments? What practical steps can you take to ruthlessly eliminate gateways to temptation and pray daily against it (Matthew 6:13)?

Sat, 05 Apr 2025 - 44min - 12 - Godly Leadership is No Accident (1 Tim. 3:2) | Pastor Rod Gomez
This sermon discusses the essence of godly leadership, emphasizing that it is no accident. Starting with the qualification of being above reproach, it delves into three critical aspects highlighted by Paul to Timothy in 1 Timothy 3: being a husband of one wife, being sober-minded, and being self-controlled. Drawing parallels to the 1986 Challenger disaster, the sermon illustrates the catastrophic potential of neglecting small but crucial details. By examining the importance of a faithful marriage, a vigilant life, and disciplined self-control, the speaker underscores intentionality as a foundational element in achieving godly leadership.
