Fri, 28 Apr 2017 - 1h 00min - 34 - discotech Podcast 49 | Simon DK (DiY)
A very special podcast for us from the one and only Simon DK (DiY). Recorded Live @ Earth in 1995 this podcast is still sounding fresh today capturing DiY perfectly. DiY soundsystem are one of our biggest influences and their parties are a pinnacle part of clubbing history. Massive shout out to Simon for allowing us to re-upload this bit of magic. Enjoy x The DiY Sound System was one of Britain's first house sound systems. The group "divided their activities between free parties and legal club nights, acting as a bridge between counter-culture and the mainstream". It was created in Nottingham in 1989 as a reaction against the growing number of rave promoters whose bias was towards their own financial enrichment, rather than the joy of their party-goers. They wished to form a cohesive, collective, political front against the prevailing anti-rave legislation that was beginning to come into force at that time. This became more marked around the time of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, with DiY playing a key role in the largest illegal rave ever put on at Castlemorton Common Festival prior to the Bill and a constant stream of illegal, outdoor parties (often at travellers' sites, quarries and disused airfields) all over the country. Simon Reynolds writes that DiY threw "free parties at abandoned airfields or on hilltops, drawing a mixed crowd of urban ravers and crusty road warriors".[2] DiY also worked successfully in the realm of legitimate club nights, with their "Bounce" night touring the country as well as being a staple of Nottingham's night life. Its popularity, connected to its lack of concern for dress codes and its non-exploitation of its loyal clubbers, coupled with its very particular form of deep, soulful, often minimal house music, led to it being recognised as one of the top ten club nights in Britain by The Times. In 1993, they also began their own record label, Strictly 4 Groovers, which later became known as DiY discs. They released house music on vinyl until 2006, which included releases by local talents Atjazz, Rhythm Plate and Charles Webster. The collectives primary DJ's - Simon DK, Digs and Woosh - still play at various nights in the U.K., Europe and United States. DiY still occasionally hold free parties, typically to celebrate a milestone date - on 19 September 2009, DiY celebrated their 20th birthday with a free party in near their home town of Nottingham.,[3] while on 23 August 2014, they their 25th (Silver) birthday with a free party held in a field in Leicestershire.

She also plays frequently for Irish house and techno institution; Shine. There she has featured alongside artists such as Bicep, Paul Woolford, Jackmaster and Green Velvet. Slowly making a name for herself with her Chicago and US garage influenced raw house sound, you can be sure to hear a lot more from this girl in the coming year.

Discotech Podcast 45 | Joel Hemmen Joel Hemmen is a independent Dj and record collector from the southern part of the Netherlands. Being hooked by the sound of the early 90's Joel started collecting records about five years ago. Inspired by artists like Kenny Dixon Junior, Pal Joey, Kerri Chandler, Glenn Underground, Jovonn, Callisto, Grant Nelson and Tuff Jam, this wax enthusiast is always looking for that specific feel good sound from the golden era. Started as a true bedroom DJ and record collector Joel's Dj career started slowly, but is becoming more and more interesting lately. Last year Joel played besides some big catz like Chez Damier, Brawther, Jovonn, Gerd, San Soda, Roger S., Italo Johnson, Fabio Monesi, Just-Ed, Ron Wilson and played at club nights all over the Netherlands. 2015 was a great year for Joel with several international gigs in Berlin, Norway, Wales (UK) and Belgium. On top of that he had a strong start of 2016 with his gig at the infamous Watergate Club. Joel is playing striclty wax during his dj sets and his sound can best be described as 'Easy Listening Underground House Music' mostly from US and UK sometimes mixed with the finest French and Italian House. https://soundcloud.com/joelhemmen-1

Discotech Podcast 44 | Tom Craven One from the vaults from Illusion Recordings label owner Tom Craven. The mix was recorded over 5 years ago in the days of his legendary BackToFront Parties in Manchester and when Below was going full swing. These two parties were massive inspiration to Tom's Illusion label and the vibe of the mix really reflects Below at the time, where he was an unofficial resident for 10 years playing the first and last parties and many more inbetween. This mix still sounds fresh despite being recorded in 2011. To quote his good friend Adam Shelton: 'I like new house music that sounds old and old house music that sounds new' This couldn't apply anymore here!

Discotech Podcast 41 | Moodymanc Manchester legend steps up to the plates for our next podcast. Moodymanc: I've been lucky, and I still am! I've been doing nothing but music in my life since the late 80s.... I became a jazz obsessive drummer and percussionist in my early teens which sparked a love affair with Black Music which I am still exploring. I've been lucky enough to work with some of my musical heroes on both sides of the glass and on stage...and still am. I was lucky enough to have a couple of brushes with major label mainstream chart busting projects which allowed me to realize that was definitely NOT what I wanted out of music. I try to live my life as an honest artist. The records I make and play are an attempt to express things that I am excited about musically and politically. I'm not interested in following fashions, or being the next big thing. The sole purpose of what I do is to continue doing what I do, with nothing but love in my heart.... I don't always succeed but i do my best :) House music is a home to me. For me it's all about records, and dancefloors, freedom, and expression; "us" not "me". Why the name "moodymanc"? It was a nickname given to me by the guys at 2020 vision, of course with a nod to Kenny, but also in reference to the fact I am a "manc", the name for a native of Manchester, England. It of course was the joke that nobody got... Some people hate it.... It's just a name. House music is about RECORDS... for me the name on them doesn't matter... the music and the intent will always shine through, I certainly hope it does with the ones I make, no matter what name I put them out under! If you have a problem with the name, shut your eyes.... If you still have a problem with the music....I guess I'm just not for you :) I LOVE to DJ. I love to represent the music, records and sounds I love by rocking a PARTY! There's no pretense, I am going to do my utmost to make sure that you and I have the best night possible with music that is going to bring it on for you by the fact it is firmly rooted in SOUL, whatever the "style". I hope we get to do this together sometime.... Feel free to holla up anytime you like. If I'm not already playing, I'd much rather be :) https://soundcloud.com/moodymanc PEACE!

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 - 1h 05min - 24 - discotech Podcast 40 | Kerouac & SMILE
Kerouac & SMILE are Mike Littler and Isaac Owen; Two northern monkeys with a mutual love of house music, beer and Greggs pasties. Back in 2007 Isaac contacted Mike on Myspace asking to remix a Kerouac track. The aforementioned remix never materialised, but what did was a friendship that eventually resulted in the Kerouac & SMILE alias. When questioned on their general philosophy towards gigs and music production. Mike was quick to point out “We like to avoid the fuss, get in and get out leaving behind as many smiling faces and great memories as possible.” Every artist duo work things differently and Kerouac & SMILE are no exception as Isaac explains “Musically Kerouac is into his bangers whereas, although I like a banger or two I have a love for the warm up. I've always loved getting those feet tapping, it’s a lost art and I have a lot of respect for people who try and do it properly.” Mike adding “Yeah, we just play music that we like and think other people will like. Nothing crazy, we don’t like sirens, crazy square wave sounds or never ending white noise sweeps in tracks. We call it sensible house.” At the end of 2014 Kerouac & SMILE had their 1st release on Kumasi Music with ‘Hang Till Daybreak’ and the duo are currently working on more tracks for the dancefloor. In early 2016, the duo are set to release "Sanity" on Electronique records. https://soundcloud.com/kerouacandsmile https://www.facebook.com/KerouacandSMILE
Thu, 03 Mar 2016 - 1h 15min - 23 - discotech Podcast 39 | System2
For our 39th Discotech Podcast we welcome System2. About: System2 was born out of a desire to produce & perform music that meant something to its creators. Our love for vinyl has led us to a new chapter, and we aim to bring something just left of centre to the industry, with our very own label behind us from the start. We are a duo from Manchester & up until now have kept our identities on the down-low after having previously worked our way up the industry ladder under a former alias. In the past, we’ve worked for labels such as Cécille Records, Get Physical Music, PIAS and Nervous amongst others, so we’re no strangers to the house scene. Growing up in Manchester really cemented our love for house music at an early age, as it’s what we heard when we first started going out clubbing. Manchester is a place synonymous with house music from the Hacienda days, not to mention other places like The Hangar, Holy City Zoo, North, The Old Monk and of course Sankeys. We started running events around 2004, and within a few years we were residents at Sankeys. The city has always been a great base for our music, and a huge influence on our style. We started producing back in 2002, doing courses at MIDI school and SSR to widen our knowledge of software and hardware alike. From setting up a basic home studio and hours of trial-and-error, over the course of the last 12 years we've been on a massive journey with our music. Experience means a lot, and nowadays you're getting some producers who are amazing but aren’t really cut out to play in clubs. There's a lot more to it than making good music then turning up at a gig and playing with your head down all night. Everyone wants to be a DJ these days, and to those who are so inclined, you can simple get a laptop and Ableton, and proceed to sync your way through a set now. We learned on vinyl and still swear by it to this day when we play, although obviously we've moved-on with the times to an extent, using USB in the majority of our sets. Our sound isn't pigeon-holed under any particular genre. Too many sub genres knocking around these days but we'd say house and techno! We love playing a lot of our own music in our sets, and it really does get some of the biggest reactions during our sets. It's amazing to be getting support on our new work from the likes of Steve Lawler, Dan Ghenacia, Shonky, Djebali, John Dimas, Richy Ahmed, Jamie Jones, Shaun Reeves & so many more! Now we have signed up with VIVa MUSiC & their management, the future is looking bright for us as we look to cement our brand & name into the ever so competitive dj circuit! https://soundcloud.com/system2-1

Discotech Podcast 37 | Julien Sandre Our next podcast is brought to you by Julien Sandre. The exploration of the big world of "da club" music leads Julien to the House music that is perfectly in tune with his love for the Funk. Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, the MAW, Todd Terry and Paul Johnson,David Duriez are just some of "superstars" which influence and charm will bring the young Julien to buy record players and vinyls and enter the world of djing. After his first love for Housey stuff, his natural evolution bring it to explore also more "electronic and hypnotic" sonorities of Ricardo,Ivan Smagghe and Parisien scene leaded by Dan Ghenacia. Discotech Podcast 36 | Katal Hailing from one of the southernmost regions of Europe, the young talent releasing under the alias Katal has found his very own way to infuse House music with his passion for kickboxing and the heat and energy of the beautiful island he lives in, and the result is a gritty and raw sound focused on the beat. Growing up listening to old mixes by masters such as Frankie Knuckles strongly defined his approach to the electronic music world, and at the age of 14 he started experimenting with his own productions, always seeking to retain that old school feeling he fell in love with. Despite being a newcomer on the scene, Katal’s powerful mix of dirty grooves and basslines already led to a good amount of quality releases on labels such as Roush or Sanity, and his work found a way into the sets of artists like Roger Sanchez or Richie Hawtin to name a few. With some impressive collaborations in the pipe and of course his new upcoming EP, the future looks bright for Sicily’s Diego Catalioti, and his Katal moniker definitely will be heard a lot in the months to come. https://soundcloud.com/katal

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 - 50min - 15 - discotech Podcast 32 | Rhythm Plate
Discotech Podcast 32 | Rhythm Plate Rhythm Plate consist of Ant Plate and Matt Rhythm, two friends who met at school through a mutual love of shoplifting and warm real ale. Plate constantly varies in age and Rhythm gets younger by the day. Hailing from the beautifully backward peak district town of Matlock , in Derbyshire, they began recording their efforts on a borrowed 8-track tape player down in the local bus station. Early attempts at pop stardom, however, were hampered by the duo’s crippling tourette’s syndrome. After conquering the bourgeoning village hall/pub scene in Matlock they set their sights on taking over the midlands through collaborations with Mantis (Derby), DiY and Winding Road (Nottingham), Flat & Round (Manchester) and Procreation (Birmingham) - they find the transpeak bus service a particularly useful way of getting to gigs - and then eventually the world, by releasing material on record labels “not from ’round ‘ere” such as San Diego’s Bluem, San Francisco’s Roam and Portland’s own, Losofono (LSF)and Lost My Dog. At present Plate sells deep house insurance and Rhythm is a dancer. Should the need arise they are both willing to travel to DJing gigs with their much-sought-after collection of cassette singles at the ready. https://soundcloud.com/rhythmplate

Our 31st Discotech Podcast recorded especially for us by this months special guest Ceri. Catch her at Discotech @ White Horse, Derby 26 September. More info - www.facebook.com/events/1484202861889747/ Ceri. Ceri has been making big waves across the scene recently, most notably her appearance this summer at Jamie Jones's legendary Paradise party at DC10 in Iibza. She also holds down a residency in London, at the capitals most forward thinking and respected after-hours; Jaded, where she regularly plays 8 and 9 hour sets combining all things house and techno. Over the years she has showcased her sound at a host of the world's most respected nights and venues. Clubs where reputations are solidified, DJs really make their names and only the strong survive such as; fabric's Saturday and Sunday night parties, Back To Basics in Leeds, Junk, Burning Man, The Treehouse Miami and many more. Her rapid rise up the ranks is not just due to her prowess behind the turntables though... her work in the studio has seen her go from strength to strength. This month alone she is releasing on ViVa MUSIC and Suruba X. With past releases on Save You, Wiggle, Dilate and Hot Creations and many more. There's a deliciously dark, seductive element to her sound which, coupled with crisp percussion and funk-infused basslines, is a sound that has found favour not only with a ever-growing fanbase of partygoers, but with some of the electronic music world's most influential figureheads including plaudits from techno don Richie Hawtin. https://soundcloud.com/ceri www.discotech.info
Thu, 10 Sep 2015 - 1h 00min - 13 - discotech Podcast 30 | Javier Carballo
Discotech Podcast 30 Javier Carballo (Overall Music / One Records / La Vie En Rose /Vatos Locos) Javier Carballo started to produce on 2009 and his music has being published very soon on international labels. Almost at the same time he began to remix other international artists. Just one year after, the canary wonder boy creates his own label together with his partner Hanfry Martínez, as natural and quickly as that! With their label they are showing their own underground house music vision, and that makes people such as Maya Jane Coles, Subb-an, Djebali, Adam Shelton, Subb-an, Jay Tripwire, Terence: Terry:, etc.- wanted to collaborate with them. They are broadcasting the rich Canary Clubbing scene, like the benefactors of such a burning up landscape. In 2014 start Overall Music Limited (vinyl only) with great names Guti, like Livio and Roby, Hector, John Dimas, Dj Jes and Tijn, Lopasky, Alci. In january of this year his friend Hector called for be part of his new Project “VATOS LOCOS” Events & labels and play In BPM festival in the Vatos Locos party. Richie Hawtin, Tania Vulcano, Raresh, , Seth Troxler, Apollonia, Paco Osuna, etc, had Played and charted Carballo’s tracks, and he had recently published some eps and remixes on labels such as District, Raw, Tzinah, One Records, and La Vie en Rose, Inmotion Music, Turquoise Blue; and now this artist is also creating new eps for Tabla , Viva , Drumma and his imprint label Overall Music, etc. On the other hand as a promoter he is the visible head of “Under Your Seat”, responsible of the line-up for Velvet Club, Rebel Electronic Dance Club and Discontrol Fest, and since 2013 Mood club Gran Canaria. Sat, 29 Aug 2015 - 1h 02min - 12 - discotech Podcast 29 | Hector Moralez
Hector Moralez / LIVE @ STRKTURE 8.07.15 Its been a while since our last Discotech podcast. We're back with a mix very kindly donated to us by the one and only Hector Moralez. Hectors ambitions began at an early age of 17, where he would spend hours practicing on his decks with the vinyl he had just worked hard for at the infamous Primal Records. The knowledge gained from his experiences at Primal together with a long list of friends and contacts, allowed Hector to develop what has become his resourceful and creative sound. Whether in the studio or, performing live behind the decks, Hectors love, passion and energy is clear to see. His sounds take influence from Latin, jazz, funk, hip hop and soul and are of course sewn together with his apparent grooving bass lines and solid fat beats. Hector’s character, hard work and innovative ability has given him a prominent standing in the house music scene, leading him to become one of the most sought after artists. Also forming the production phenomenon's "Nickelz & Dimes, "Block Committee" & “Fries & Bridges”. Releases from Hector have enhanced highly respected labels such as Music For Freaks, Nightshift, Detour, Vista, Brique Rouge, Doubledown, Lowdown Music, and Robsoul. These popular works have lead to further demand with new releases due on Restricted Access, DJ Sneak Classics, Magnetic, Pacha Recordings. As well as managing and producing on his own distinguished underground labels, Minority Music & The Factory. 2013 saw the release of his highly anticipated debut album with Chris Carrier, on the acclaimed French imprint Apollonia. The LP spawned a new (live) show, a first for Hector. Pushing boundaries and creating a new sound, is taking his career to the next level. Hector sets no boundaries as he expands the limits with his exceptional and versatile approach to producing and presenting his interpretation and version of house music. This attention to detail, evident in every beat, has led to acclaim from house music’s highest ranked artists "DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Dan Ghenacia, Apollonia, Chris Carrier, Mark Farina, Diz and DJ Heather More info - https://soundcloud.com/hectormoralez

Our 25th Podcast by very special guest Fanick. This great up and coming artist pulls off podcast to be proud of. Nice building set this. Hope you enjoy as much as we did. More about Fanick: As soon as Fanick entered his first club aged thirteen, he had already decided that he wanted to be the man behind the decks. At the time, he was mostly interested in broken beats, his first practice spent experimenting with breakbeat, UK & speed garage. Fanick’s tastes and interests consistently developed over the years and by 2006 he had immersed himself into sounds of disco and deep house, just in time to rock the night clubs of St. Petersburg. Fanick became a resident of a infamous bar called Druzhba in 2007 where he shared a DJ booth with the likes of Ashley Beedle, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area, Jay Shepheard, Swag, Kevin Yost, Todd Teje, Baris K, Hunee and many others. In 2008, Fanick started a new club night called Galaxis, which migrated between different clubs and bars around St. Petersburg and rapidly became incredibly popular amongst the liberal minded youth of the city. For the past 2 years, Fanick has been doing his own parties called Throw, where he invited young but fast rising dj's/producers like Mr KS or Diego Krause and get a residency at the new club Mosaique. He’s often touring his sets around Russia everywhere from Sochi to Vladivostok, participates in various festivals and plays for internet radio projects such as RTS FM and Follow Me. Fanick has taken the next step forwards into producing, guided by his latest influences of late 90's - early 00's house scene. Now spending most of his time in the studio, creating his own vision of what electronic music should be. Fanick’s tracks were released on the Plant 74, All Over It & Overall Music.
