  • 205 - Episode #145 When there are no role models who look like you

    I can't be who I can't see.

I hear this from Black lawyers all the time, and it makes complete sense. When you look up the ladder and there's no one who looks like you, no one you can relate to, it's hard to picture yourself there.

But the belief that you need someone like you to go ahead of you is the exact thing that's costing you.

It makes you think you don't want it. Doubt that you could get it. And even if you could get it, question whether you'd succeed at it.

Thoughts like these are shaping the decisions you are making at work every single day: the opportunity you don't put your name forward for, the promotion you shy away from, the firm you leave before you've given it a real chance.

This isn't a question of ability. It's a lack of belief: the sense that something only becomes possible for you once someone else has done it first.

You're not alone in thinking this. It's an entirely understandable response to being the only one.

In this episode of the Legal Imposters podcast, I give you a different response. A different way of approaching being the only one in the room that will demolish this role models barrier once and for all: Being the first.

This isn't about being first past the post. It's being the one who goes first.

In this episode, I teach you exactly how to do it in 3 steps

The result? You stop needing the role model who looks like you.

Because the role model IS you.

    Listen now.

P.S. If you're doubting whether this will work or wondering "but am I really capable of that?", this is exactly the work we do inside Be The First. Enrolment opens on 27 October. • 204 - Episode #143 When your best isn't good enough

You're working twice as hard. So why does someone else get the invitation to the client event?

You prepare more thoroughly than anyone on the team. You stay later, check the draft one more time, and deliver work you're proud of. And still, the invitation goes to someone else. The high-profile matter lands on another desk. The recognition you've earned doesn't follow.

It's completely understandable to respond by working even harder. It's what your parents told you, it's what got you here, and it has served you well. But at this stage of your career, excellent work is the expectation, not what sets you apart. What moves you forward now is relationships and visibility.

That is exactly where being the only one makes things harder. When you don't share the cultural references, when the conversation turns to ski trips and school networks, when you weren't invited in the first place, it's easy to decide you have nothing in common. It's easy to retreat into the work, where you feel safe from being exposed, and to forget how much you bring to the room.

In this episode I explain why the answer is to be the first. Not first past the post. Being the first means having the confidence to be who you can't see: to include yourself, to persevere, to add value to the room, to be highly visible, and to show up at your highest level.

That is what builds the know, like and trust that brings opportunities, work allocation, support and recognition. And that is how you progress to your full potential.

Your best has always been good enough. Now it needs to be seen.

  • 203 - Episode #142 The Power of Awareness

You don't need anything groundbreaking to get unstuck. What you need is Awareness.

Most people underestimate it. Writing it off as too simple and too obvious. But awareness is one of the most powerful tools you'll ever use — because it's the only thing that turns a problem you can't see into a problem you can actually solve.

Once you can name something, you can anticipate it, avoid it, prepare for it or even solve it. Before that, you're just reacting to something you don't fully understand.

I learned this with my own imposter syndrome. From the moment I named it, I started to recognise it. I noticed how and when it showed up. This led to an understanding of what was actually causing it: I'd forgotten who I am. Once I understood that, I stopped chasing quick fixes. I solved it at the level it actually lives — identity. I remembered who I am. I've watched the same shift happen for clients.

I've watched the same shift happen for clients.

One Be The First 1:1 client, a partner navigating firm politics, was pulled into a conversation with another partner that felt like being told what to do by an equal. Her reaction was instant and reactive — she shut down, refused to engage. Once she became aware of that pattern, she did something completely different. She reached out.

Another client, inside Be The First Membership, felt anxious walking into every meeting. Awareness told her something simple: it's normal for this to be there. Her body doesn't know the difference between real danger and a boardroom. So she stopped resisting it. She remembered who she is. She showed up, spoke up, and contributed.

    That's the power of awareness.

In this episode, I walk through what awareness actually is, how it works, and exactly where to start.

You're not looking for a magic wand. You're looking for the first step. It's closer than you think.

  • 202 - Episode #141 Double your confidence (in 30 days or less)

I want to talk about doubling your confidence in 30 days.

Can I actually prove that number? No. But what I'm about to share has worked for me, and it's worked for client after client inside Be The First — so I'm confident it'll work for you.

Do you find yourself preparing twice as much as everyone else, just so you feel ready?

Rewriting the same email four times before you let yourself send it?

Staying quiet in the meeting because you're not 100% certain you're right and doubt you have value to add

Turning down the opportunity before anyone gets the chance to turn you down first?

If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place. That's Imposter Syndrome — as evidenced by the overworking, the overthinking, the playing small, the quiet self-sabotage that's holding you back without you realising.

But here's the thing I want you to know: Imposter Syndrome isn't a problem you need to fix. It's just a question about identity you haven't fully answered yet.

The confidence you get when you do is the no.1 factor that matters when you're junior, and matters increasingly as you get more senior. Yes you can progress without it. But it gets harder, not easier. The rooms get whiter. The doubt gets louder.

So in today's episode, I'm giving you one shift. Not a mantra, not a hack, not something you'll forget by Wednesday.

A simple exercise to double your confidence in 30 days: List 100 successes.

It's simple, yes. Easy? No. Worth the discomfort you feel when you go to do it? 100%.

One client told me she skipped this section in my book Be The First, because she didn't think she could do it. (Now I'm walking her through it inside Be The First Membership and her confidence is growing on the spot).

You'll probably hit resistance too -

    I can't think of 100.

    I don't have that many.

    This feels impossible.

That's completely normal — it's not a sign you're doing it wrong, it's the muscle actually building. That resistance is the whole point of the exercise, not a reason to stop.

I walk through exactly how to do it and what to do the moment that resistance shows up, in this week's episode of Legal Imposters.

Double your confidence in 30 days. All you need is a notebook, and a pen.

Listen to episode 141 on iTunes or your favourite podcast player.

P.S. Inside Be The First Membership, I give you the coaching and the prompts to find your 100 successes as part of the proven process that builds confidence built to last your whole career, not just this month. • 201 - Episode #140 The 3 Beliefs Stopping You Getting a Sponsor

    You did everything right.

You identified the sponsor. You built the relationship. You made the ask.

And the answer was still no.

That stings. It's normal to replay it — to wonder what you missed, to assume it was the strategy. But sponsorship isn't only won with strategy. It's won with belief.

A belief isn't a fact. It's a thought you've chosen — adopted, imposed, or built deliberately. It's the filter you see the world through. And here's why that matters: what you believe shapes how you feel. How you feel shapes what you do. What you do creates your result. Believe you have nothing to add, and you'll stay quiet in the room that could have made the case for you. The silence becomes the proof of the very thing you feared.

Three beliefs quietly cost lawyers their sponsor, every time.

I don't believe in myself. It sounds like needing someone else to confirm you're ready. It looks like waiting for permission you'll never receive. Try instead: I'm enough. I'm ready. I'm partner material.

I don't believe in them. It sounds like judging the offer before it's made, staying guarded, keeping people at arm's length. Try instead: they want to support me.

I don't believe in the system. It sounds like "places like this weren't built for people like me" — and it's not wrong. But it isn't the whole story. Try instead: this place needs someone like me. I'm the one they're looking for.

None of these beliefs were wrong to have felt. They're just not the ones that get you sponsored.

This week's episode walks through all three — where they come from, how you know you're standing in one, and what to choose instead. And on Monday, I'm running a free training, How To Win A Sponsor, where we put it into practice. Click here to Register.

    Talk soon,

    Caroline

P.S. Sponsorship is one of the things I teach inside Be The First Group Coaching — how to build the relationships that actually convert into advocacy, not just access.
