Tue, 26 Mar 2024 - 11min - 111 - 110 // The Connection Between Simplicity, Self-Worth, and Reaching Our Greatest Potential - with Rose Lounsbury
As you embark on your decluttering and simplifying journey, you start to ask yourself questions such as: What am I making space for? What dreams have been buried in the stuff and chaos around me? Where do I find my self-worth as a mom and woman? Is it in the roles that I play and the things I own, or something deeper? When we start simplifying and creating space in our homes, calendars, and minds, it opens up so much more than extra square footage or hours in our day. It allows us to dream, to see where our self-worth truly comes from outside what we have and what we do, and to reach our greatest potential as moms and women. On today’s episode, simplicity coach Rose Lounsbury and I discuss these topics and much more! Rose helps busy working moms declutter their homes, simplify their work lives, and clear their minds. After struggling to balance a teaching career and 2-year-old triplets, Rose was introduced to minimalism in 2012. Thu, 28 Dec 2023 - 30min - 86 - 85 // 23 Things I Learned About Decluttering in 2023
I’ve been pursuing a simpler, more minimal lifestyle for almost a decade and have learned a lot along the way. But hosting this podcast continues to teach me something new every week! So here’s 23 things I’ve learned about decluttering in 2023. Last days of my GIVEAWAY! If you leave a written review in Apple Podcasts between December 12, 2023 and December 31, 2023 AND send a screenshot of the review (info@simplebyemmy.com or direct message me on Facebook or Instagram), you’ll be in the running for a free autographed copy of my children’s book Little One. Great as a gift for the little ones in your life! Resources Mentioned: Here’s the list of 23 things I learned about decluttering in 2023 with links to all the relevant episodes! 1. I need to always remind myself why I’m holding on, and why I’m letting go. (Episode 3) 2. My emotions and thoughts are not my reality. I can feel overwhelm (vibration in my body) and have a thought, but can always ask if the thought is true. My thoughts are not me. (Episode 82) 3. I can have the courage to understand my values and live in alignment with them, even if they aren’t what everyone else does. (Episode 3) 4. Decluttering unemotional areas first gives me the momentum and the strength of small wins so I can do harder things. (Episode 5) 5. Artificial boundaries, including margins in my day, allow me to live within my capacity. (Episode 6 and Episode 30) 6. What I model to my kids matters. (Episode 18) 7. If decluttering is decision making, clutter is delayed decisions. (Episode 6) 8. Decluttering is reclaiming what is rightfully mine - my time, energy, focus, and attention. (Episode 8) 9. Once I’ve paid for something with money, I don’t have to keep paying for it with my time and energy. I can let go of the guilt and move on. (Episode 9) 10. Keeping aspirational clutter - things that we used to do, that used to fit us - just makes me feel bad about myself. I can let it go knowing that in another season, I may be able to get back to those things but I don’t have to feel bad about my life now. (Episode 10) 11. Just because an item has memories attached, doesn’t mean I need to keep it if the memories aren’t positive ones. (Episode 11) 12. Perfectionism and procrastination are two sides of the same coin. Not doing it perfectly prevents me from starting, so I’m going to start small and imperfectly, especially with decluttering. (Episode 12 and Episode 73) 13. Your loved ones want you to be happy, not burdened by their stuff. Let go of the guilt. A gift given out of love doesn’t need to be kept out of guilt. (Episode 14) 14. “Just in case” likely means never. Instead, focus on “just for when” items - seasonal, etc. and be realistic about what you actually use and need. (Episode 15) 15. The most powerful questions I can ask myself are “What can I lay down?” and “What unnecessary decisions can I remove from my life?” (Episode 19) 16. Just because I get something for free or a gift does not mean I need to keep it. I am the CEO of my home. (Episode 23) 17. I set the tone for my home and what is acceptable when it comes to clutter and tidying. (Episode 81) 18. You need a system around your stuff or else you’ll continue to feel overwhelmed. (Episode 81) 19. Clutter-free living is not a final destination. It’s a journey and process based upon small, consistent steps. (Episode 52) 20. Thinking about my family being burdened by my stuff if something happens to me may be morbid, but it’s super powerful. (Episode 65) 21. There is nothing I can buy that is going to make me feel better in the long run. Dopamine is fleeting. Peace that comes from a clutter-free home is better than any purchase. (Episode 23) 22. Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 12min - 85 - 84 // Simple Techniques to Build Emotional Resilience to Combat Overwhelm and Dysregulation with Michelle Grosser from The Calm Mom Podcast
What is the connection between our nervous system and how we experience motherhood? How can we process and release our emotions in a healthy way and then teach that to our children? How can we proactively manage our triggers so we can feel less overwhelmed? These are just some of the questions I am diving into today with Michelle Grosser. Michelle is a Nervous System Expert, Certified Master Life Coach, and host of The Calm Mom Podcast. Through somatic and neuroscience-based modalities, she coaches women through discovering what’s beneath their triggers and emotions, so they can begin their healing journey and find peace in the present. She deeply believes that the most profound thing we can offer our children is our own healing. She and her husband Jeff have two daughters and live in Miami, FL. In this episode, Michelle shares simple ways we can equip ourselves to recognize nervous system dysregulation by our body’s somatic cues and combat that dysregulation in a “language” that our body understands through somatic techniques. This is such an informative and tactical conversation you don’t want to miss! GIVEAWAY ALERT! Tue, 05 Dec 2023 - 12min - 79 - 78 // Intentional Planning to Combat Overwhelm with Sarah Horgan From Simple + Intentional
When we are stressed and overwhelmed, planning is usually the first thing to go by the wayside. But intentional planning doesn’t have to take up a ton of time, and can have incredible benefits! In today’s conversation, I’m talking again with Sarah Horgan from Simple + Intentional about her best tips for intentional planning to combat anxiety and overwhelm. Sarah is a full-time teacher, mom and wife who is passionate about helping women change their lives through decluttering. After a cancer diagnosis in 2014, she discovered her perfectionism and people pleasing were holding her back and creating a lot of overwhelm. This was also the year she first discovered minimalism and slowly started getting rid of things. Fast forward to 2018 and becoming a mom. The overwhelm forced Sarah to start examining her relationship with stuff and the big purge began. And she hasn't looked back! Now Sarah helps other moms deal with their clutter, get organized and create systems + routines to make life easier. The Man in the Arena speech by Theodore Roosevelt The Mom in the Arena by Emily McDermott It is not the critic who counts; nor the mom who berates herself for stumbling, or who looks to Instagram to see where she, the doer of all the doing, could have done it better. The credit belongs to the same mom who is actually in the arena, whose shirt is stained by spit up and Goldfish crumbs; who strives valiantly to be the mom she knows she is called to be; who yells at her kids, who comes up short again and again, who apologizes and makes it right and tries better the next day. Because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; there is no perfect mom - it is an illusion that traps us despite what we know in our heart of hearts to be true. But who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms of the laughter of a child and a moment of true connection, the great devotion we feel to the family entrusted to our care; who spends herself in the most worthy of causes; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of being imperfectly devoted to the highest calling of all, and who at the worst, when she fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that her place shall never be with the moms who let perfectionism prevent them from the victory of a life fully lived. *** I help moms declutter their homes, heads, and hearts. Tue, 12 Sep 2023 - 12min - 55 - 54 // How to Simplify, Minimize, and Thrive - Even with a Chronic Illness - with Ali Cornish from Everthrive
We know that clutter directly impacts our overwhelm and stress, as well as our physical health. As we declutter and simplify, we are seeking a more peaceful, less stressful life. But if you have a chronic illness that is impacted by stress - like my guest Ali Cornish - then it’s even more important to declutter your home, head, and heart so that you can learn to not only survive, but thrive despite the challenges of the illness. Ali describes herself as a mother, writer and wife rooted in minimalism, wellness, and lifelong learning. Shortly after launching her website Everthrive.org, she was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (otherwise known as AS), an incurable inflammatory disease. After suffering from long bouts of pain and intermittent immobility, Ali chose to redouble her commitment to a minimalist way of life. Through living simply, eliminating distractions, and focusing on the important aspects of life, she put her AS symptoms into remission. Whether you have a chronic illness like Ali, or if you’re just looking for ways to reduce stress and inflammation, today’s episode is incredibly helpful and I know you’re going to learn a lot. Cycle syncing can be described as adapting your lifestyle to your the different phases of your menstrual cycle. Changing levels of hormones including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone have a direct effect on our mood and energy. So if we are aware of what to expect in each of the four phases of the menstrual cycle - (menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal), we can better plan our diet, exercise, calendar, and yes, even decluttering (as well as shopping) around the shifts in our hormones. For a limited time, you can get the following for $100 (normal price $125) if you provide an honest review of my services: - 30 minute Zoom call where we talk about the area(s) you want to focus on for my in-person visit. You can show me the space on the video call and I can give you some prep work depending on your goals for the area. That way we can hit the ground running when I arrive and you can get the most bang for your buck, so to speak. - 2-2.5 hour in-person meet up where we go through 1-2 areas of your home. - I will assign you some "homework" to continue when I'm gone. Thu, 13 Apr 2023 - 11min - 32 - 31 // Effectively Parenting Strong-Willed Kids When You’re Overwhelmed with Danielle Bettmann from Wholeheartedly
Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm definitely impact how we parent, and if you throw a strong-willed kiddo (or two) into the mix, then parenting becomes even more challenging. Today’s guest is Danielle Bettmann. Danielle is a Positive-Discipline certified parenting mentor for families with strong-willed kids age 1-7 and host of the Failing Motherhood podcast. She guides parents to cultivate cooperation, extend their patience and prevent behavior proactively through a group coaching program called Wholeheartedly CALM. A teacher by trade and a coach by strengths, her passion is to be a translator between adult + child, helping parents crack the code of their child's personality and find sanity + strategies. Today, Danielle shares her powerful story about why she ended up downsizing with her two daughters, moving to an apartment and getting rid of 75% of their belongings and, even when she moved into a larger home again, not filling it up with stuff when she recognized the benefits of living with less. We then talk about how to approach parenting with self-awareness, compassion, and without mom guilt, especially when we’re overwhelmed and dealing with strong-willed kiddos. Thu, 06 Apr 2023 - 32min - 31 - 30 // Feeling Stuck on Your Decluttering Journey? The One Mindset Hack that Will Change Everything
Instead of using the physical confines of our home as a barometer for how much we own, and filling our schedules within the confines of the 24 hours we have in a day, we need to look at our capacity, that is, what we can reasonably manage when it comes to our stuff and our time. Today I dive deep into this mindset shift, which has forever changed the way that I go about decluttering. Glitter. Toys. Pillow forts. Paint. Childhood is messy! And when you’re trying to keep a tidy house, the mess can be unnerving. We think about how long it’s going to take to clean up, rather than fully enjoying our kids’ creativity. In today’s episode, my guest Desirae Endres shares how she’s been able to shift her mindset about kids’ messes and remember that embracing minimalism doesn’t mean everything is always tidy, but easily tidied! Desirae is a mom of two, wife, podcast host, and former English teacher. Her passion is to share the message of minimalism and intentional living with other women, as minimalism is a movement has truly changed her life. Thu, 23 Mar 2023 - 29min - 29 - 28 // Are You Constantly Shuffling Around Piles of Papers? Steal my No-Fail Paper Processing Routine
Do you have piles of paper that are constantly shuffled around from place to place? Do you lack a system around all the paper coming into your home? Today I’m sharing my no-fail paper processing routine around the three main categories of paper that my mamas struggle with the most - mail, kids’ school papers, and kids’ artwork. Resources Mentioned (may include affiliate links): The paper tray/inbox I use in my kitchen looks like this one I use the ScanSnap scanner. Mine works with Evernote but they make other models as well. Amazon Basics 12-sheet paper shredder For mail: To unsubscribe: For catalogs you don’t want, use Catalog Choice. Dmachoice.org to unsubscribe from mailing lists Optoutprescreen.com for credit card solicitations yellowpagesoptout.com for phone books Magazines - depends on the magazine but the company needs to be contacted directly in most cases. If you don’t want the physical copy, your local library may have access to magazines through Libby or Overdrive. Mine has 3,900 magazines available! For kids’ school papers: I use Evernote (especially the Evernote app) to easily capture kids’ school work and artwork I want to keep. Here’s a short Reel showing you how I use it. For kids’ artwork and crafts: If artwork doesn’t go on my kids’ corkboards in their rooms, I leave it in art purgatory for a few months. Then I go through it and will either take a photo using Evernote or throw it away. I will keep a limited number of items (especially with handprints, etc.) in a physical file folder after I have taken a photo or scanned it. Other ways to keep your kids artwork is using a system like Artkive and Keepy. They are apps that have paid and free versions that can take your kids’ artwork and make art books or framed mosaics out of them. *** Have a question about decluttering, simplifying, systems, or anything else we talk about on the podcast? Thu, 16 Mar 2023 - 12min - 28 - 27 // What Does Your Home Say About You? The Secret to Decorating Intentionally with Dani Watson from fig & farm at home
Today I am thrilled to bring you an interview with Dani Watson. Dani is a former first grade teacher turned home decorator. She describes herself as a daughter of the King, wife, boy mom and popcorn enthusiast. She's the host of the #1 ranked home design podcast, fig & farm at home. What I love about Dani and why I invited her on the show is that she teaches busy moms with REAL homes and REAL budgets how to break free from the Pinterest perfect trap to create a home that tells their story with their style. She also grew up in a cluttered environment, and this really influenced her intentional approach to design and decorating. As we are decluttering, we want to keep in mind what is most important to us. And that includes asking ourselves how we want our home to feel, and what story we want it to tell. Dani believes that homes are a canvas for storytelling, and learning how to intentionally decorate your home can help make it the restful haven you want it to be, not a cluttered, overwhelming place. And spoiler alert - the secret to intentional design is not buying every throw pillow you can find at Home Goods or Target! Thu, 02 Mar 2023 - 10min - 26 - 25 // From “I Don’t Like it Here” to Rediscovering Joy in Your Home and Motherhood - with Elyse Rooney from the Wholesome Mumma Show
Have you ever looked around your house and thought to yourself, “I don’t like it here?” Has your home ever felt like a prison filled with stuff, rather than a peaceful haven? If so, you’re going to love my conversation today with my friend Elyse Rooney. Elyse shares a powerful story of the moment she realized she didn’t like being in her home, a moment that prompted her to grab the trash bags and start to ruthlessly declutter the things that weren’t serving her and her family. If you have ever felt anxious and overwhelmed in your home and knew something needed to change, I know you’re going to love her story. Elyse lives in Australia with her husband and 3 children. She is a Christian Motherhood coach and chai latte enthusiast (something she and I have in common). Elyse helps moms, or “mums” as they say in Australia, of young kids to step into their calling of homemaking and raising their children. She is passionate about helping overwhelmed mums trade stress for peace and create flow in their home. Elyse also shares her journey of moving to a slow, simple way of living and why all mothers should embrace a more holistic, natural lifestyle. Elyse is the host of a top 1.5% global podcast, The Wholesome Mumma Show. She believes it is possible to spend quality time with your children, without the mum guilt of letting the home or the to do list go. Thu, 23 Feb 2023 - 32min - 25 - 24 // Instead of “Does it Spark Joy?” Ask These 4 Questions to Help You Declutter
When it comes to decluttering, you need to ask yourself some tough questions. Marie Kondo made this type of questioning popular with her favorite: “Does it spark joy?” While this may work for some items, I personally don’t think it’s a very helpful litmus test for deciding what to keep and what to toss. So today I’m sharing four lesser-known, but powerful questions that I use regularly in my own decluttering practice that will help you declutter more effectively. GIVEAWAY ALERT! Between February 16, 2023 when this episode airs and February 20th at midnight Eastern time (EST), If you leave a rating and written review in Apple Podcasts, take a screen shot of it before you submit it and send it to me at @simplebyemmy either on Instagram or Facebook, you will be entered in a drawing for a free one-hour coaching session with me, valued at $47. Thu, 16 Feb 2023 - 11min - 24 - 23 // Drowning in Clutter? Stop Doing These 3 Things
If you search for decluttering tips in Pinterest, you will find hundreds of ideas, decluttering challenges, and the like. But what you won’t find as much as is how to prevent excess stuff that becomes clutter from coming into your house in the first place. Recommending that people buy less is not supported by our consumerist culture. The hard truth is that if you want to stop constantly decluttering, you have to be more intentional and, dare I say ruthless, with what you are bringing into your home. You have to be mindful of the still small voice that is questioning your purchases in the moment. In today’s episode, I share the three things you need to STOP doing in order to get out from under your clutter.
