    Today on This Quiet-Please Podcast on Murder Ballads we are going to talk about one of the most famous murder ballads of all time: Stagger Lee/ The song "Stagger Lee" is based on a real-life murder that took place in St. Louis, Missouri, on Christmas Eve, 1895. Stagger Lee Shelton, a pimp and gambler, shot and killed Billy Lyons, a friend of his, after an argument over a Stetson hat. Shelton was arrested and tried for murder, but he was acquitted.

The young woman's body is then thrown into the river.
