The easiest thing to tell a woman in a violent marriage is to just leave. But is leaving always that simple? From financial vulnerabilities to a loss of kinships, to a turbulent clash of hope and fear, to a complex interplay of love and desire, the decision to not leave are also stories that need to be heard.

In this story, a caseworker walks us through her Sunday, that day of the week when she takes her son to visit her husband's village. What awaits her there are the probing questions of neighbours as well as the calming presence of her best friend - a Mahua tree.

In this new episode of Bolti Kahaniyan, Dipta Bhog narrates ‘Hekdi’, a story by writer Vijaydan Detha. This story is taken from the Hindi translation of his anthology ‘Batan Ri Phulwadi’ published by Rajasthani Granthagar.

This story was told by the river to the waves, the waves to the shores, the shores to the winds, the winds to Biiji and by Bijji to us. Bijji, aka Vijaydan Detha, is a folk storyteller in the village and has a treasure trove of Rajasthan’s folktales.

In the story, when a washerwoman helps him, Thakur starts swearing at her instead of being grateful. Soon enough, Thakur’s pride begins to flow down the river, just as he does.

बोलती कहानियां के इस नए 6वें एपिसोड में दिप्ता भोग से सुनिए लेखक विजयदान देथा की कहानी ‘हेकड़ी’. यह कहानी उनके संग्रह ‘बातां री फुलवाड़ी’ के हिंदी अनुवाद से ली गई है जिसके प्रकाशक राजस्थानी ग्रंथागार हैं.

यह कहानी नदी ने लहरों से कही, लहरों ने किनारों से, किनारों ने हवाओं से, हवाओं ने बिज्जी से और बिज्जी ने हमसे कही. बिज्जी यानी विजयदान देथा गांव-ढाणी और लोक के कथाकार हैं. उनके पास राजस्थान की लोककथाओं का खज़ाना है.

हेकड़ी कहानी में धोबिन की मदद के बावजूद उसका शुक्रिया अदा करना तो दूर ठाकुर हेकड़ी दिखाते हुए उसे गाली देने लगता है. ठाकुर का दंभ भी नदी के पानी में वैसे ही बहता चला गया जैसे खुद ठाकुर!

शहरों, महानगरों में रहते हुए जब हम काम या पढ़ने-लिखने की जगहों, दोस्तों की महफिलों में ये कहते हैं कि, ‘यहां जाति कहां हैं? हम तो किसी तरह का भेद-भाव नहीं करते.’ उस वक्त हम यह भूल जाते हैं कि यहां तक पहुंचने में कौन-कौन मेरे साथ चल रहा था? उनमें किस-किस जाति के लोग शामिल थे? क्या ऐसा था कि स्कूल से लेकर दफ्तर तक मुझे हर जगह अपने जैसे विशेषाधिकार प्राप्त जाति के लोग ही मिले? तो, निम्न जाति के लोग कहां हैं?

उस वक्त ज़रूरत बस निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की होती है. आपने कभी ये करके देखा है?

मुम्बई, महाराष्ट्र के रहने वाले रोहन के लिए भी अपने सरनेम पर गौरव महसूस करना और आरक्षण का विरोध कर रिज़र्व श्रेणी की जातियों को अपनी परेशानी का कारण बताना बहुत आसान था. लेकिन, एक फेलोशिप पर काम करने के दौरान जब रोहन ने निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की कोशिश की तब उसे जाति और उससे जुड़े विशेषाधिकारों के बारे में पता चला. इस प्रक्रिया में रोहन ने जाति के बारे में जितना जाना उतना ही बचपन से भर दी गई बनी-बनाई धारणाओं के पहाड़ को तोड़ने में उसे मदद मिली. इ

When Muskan said “Hamare yahaan yeh sab chalta hi nahi hai” (These things aren’t allowed in our areas), we couldn’t help but notice that she said it for feeling love as well as anger. Shubhangani who had joined the zoom call from Kekri, Rajasthan chimed in by saying that she feels pushed around, like a football, by elders. If there is no space to express and feel either love or anger, then what does the heart do? Listen to these adolescent voices as they tell us exactly as their heart feels.

In feminist organisations and within the academic discourse, we sit with the term ‘safe space’ quite often and roll it in our mouth to reiterate how multifarious and ever changing that term is. But when we asked Muskan and Shomya what it means to them and where they feel the most at home, they responded that these were spaces they have created away from home. 20-year-old Muskan from Samastipur, Bihar and 19-year-old Shomya from Thane, Maharashtra joined this conversation on a Zoom call from their safe spaces where the former had children reading in the background and the latter had a group of friends moving in and out of the computer room. नारीवादी संस्थाओं और अकादमिक बातचीत में ‘सुरक्षित जगह’ के बारे में अक्सर बात की जाती है. भिन्न मौकों पर हम इस बात को दोहराते हैं कि इस लफ्ज़ के माने अलग-अलग लोगों के लिए, और अलग-अलग वक़्त पर कितने मुख्तलिफ़ रहे हैं. कुछ ऐसा ही सवाल हमने मुस्कान और शोम्या से पूछा कि इस लफ्ज़ का उनके लिए क्या मतलब है? और कौन सी जगह पर उन्हें सबसे ज़्यादा घर जैसा अहसास होता है, जहां वे आराम और सुकून से रह सकती हैं? तो, उन्होंने बताया कि ये वे जगहें हैं जो उन्होंने अपने घर से दूर बनाई हैं. समस्तीपुर, बिहार की रहनेवाली 20 साल की मुस्कान और महाराष्ट्र ठाणे से 19 साल की शोम्या ने अपनी सुरक्षित जगह से ज़ूम कॉल पर इस बातचीत में हिस्सा लिया. जहां मुस्कान के पीछे से बच्चों से पढ़ने की आवाज़ आ रही थी. और शोम्या के दोस्त लगातार कंप्यूटर रूम से आ-जा रहे थे. आइए उनसे सुनें कि कैसे ये जगह उनके लिए सुरक्षित जगह बन गई.

‘मेरा चश्मा मेरे रूल्स’ तीन एपिसोड की एक पॉडकास्ट शृंखला है. इसे द थर्ड आई ने ‘पार्टनर फॉर लॉ इन डेवलपमेंट (पीएलडी) के साथ मिलकर तैयार किया है. पीएलडी की मदद से हमारी मुलाकात बिहार, झारखंड, महाराष्ट्र और उत्तर प्रदेश राज्यों से 18 से 20 साल की 4 लड़कियों से हुई. अलग-अलग सामाजिक और पारिवारिक परिवेश से आने वाली ये लड़कियां एक साझा मंच पर किशोरावस्था के अपने अनुभवों को साझा कर रही हैं जो कभी-कभार ही हमारी पॉलिसी का हिस्सा बनते हैं.

“Tumhari chahat kya hai? Tum kya chahti ho?” (What do you desire?)

When was the last time we asked an adolescent what they think about their desires? How can we see their lives from their perspective?

Like you, we didn’t know either. So, we decided to meet them online to listen to them with their starry, triangle and heart-shaped Chashma (glasses) on. When we started our zoom call with Muskan, Shomya, Sahiba and Shubhangani with this question, we knew we were venturing into a gully of their thoughts and feelings.

‘Mera Chashma, Mere Rules’, a three-episode podcast produced by The Third Eye in collaboration with Partners for Law in Development (PLD), brought 4 girls—between the ages of 18–20, hailing from different religions, states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh), social and familial setups—to discuss the range of adolescent experiences which seldom become the subject of policy discussion.

Are you ready to witness their rooms with them? There’s only one rule: you have to enter wearing their Chashma. Meet them in this limited series, through a new episode, out every Monday.

आखिरी बार कब हमने किसी युवा से उनकी चाहतों के बारे में पूछा था? हम कैसे उनकी ज़िंदगी उनके नज़रिए से देख सकते हैं?

आपकी ही तरह, हमें भी ये नहीं पता था. तो हमने उनसे ऑनलाइन मुलाकात की, ताकि उन्हें सुन सकें उनके तड़कते, भड़कते, तिकोने आकार के, सितारों वाले, दिल के आकार के चश्मों के साथ. जब हमने इस सवाल के साथ मुस्कान, शौम्या, साहिबा और शुभांगनी के साथ ज़ूम कॉल शुरू की तभी हम समझ गए थे कि अब हम इनके साथ चाहतों और विचारों की महीन गलियों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं.

A young girl employs a clever strategy to get her family’s support for higher education. But she soon discovers that her father is one step ahead of her and thus unravels this love–hate relationship between a father and daughter.  

“फ se Field, श se Shiksha” is a series of 10 audio stories coming from the lived experiences and imaginations of education in rural India. How do we look at education outside classrooms? More importantly, who gets access to education at all?  We explore all this and more, as members of our Learning Lab team take us along on their journeys of shiksha. In the last episode of the series, we meet a daughter and father, trying to navigate their bittersweet relationship around their different views on education.

राजस्थान के जोधपुर जिले, एक छोटे से कस्बे में एक शाम विकास अपने खत्री होस्टल से निकलकर ओसवाल होस्टल की तरफ बढ़ा जा रहा था. ओसवाल होस्टल के पास जियो का नया टावर लगा है जहां इंटरनेट की स्पीड बहुत तेज होती है. विकास वहां फ़िल्में डाउनलोड करने जा रहा है. समानांतर उसके दिमाग में कुछ सवाल भी डाउनलोड हो रहे थे. जैसे, किस तरह जेंडर, जाति और वर्ग से तय होता है कि किसे क्या सुविधाएं मिलेंगी? लड़की है तो वो होस्टल में रहकर नहीं पढ़ सकती. खत्री लड़का, खत्रियों के होस्टल में रहेगा जहां उसे जाति आधारित बहुत सारी सुविधाएं भी मिलेंगी लेकिन वहीं किसी नीची समझी जाने वाली जाति के लड़के के लिए ये सुविधाएं नहीं है...क्यों? विकास जानता है कि ये बंटवारा सिर्फ़ ज़मीन पर नहीं है बल्कि ऑनलाइन की दुनिया तक किसकी पहुंच है ये भी जाति, वर्ग और जेंडर से ही तय होता है. ऐसे और भी बहुत सारे सवाल सुनिए विकास की डायरी के कुछ पन्ने, खुद उसकी ज़ुबानी.

All education and science is forgotten when a young, unmarried girl misses her period. As doctors, teachers, family members and friends intervene and interpret, conjectures are made and confusion and fear abound.

The Third Eye’s Learning Lab is an arts-based pedagogical and co-creation platform where we come together to critically examine our own standpoints, to engage and question the systems of knowledge that shape us. At the centre of the pedagogy are our Digital Educators (DEs) based in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand. Coming from different age, gender and caste locations and rooted in community-based organisations, the DEs bring tremendous diversity and depth of experience. Image, text and sound are fundamental elements of exploration, discovery and self-articulation in this process, as is the feminist lens. This series by the DEs emerged from a process of prompt-led creative writing.

We have been meeting single women in small-town and rural India in our Ekal podcast series. In Episode 4, we meet a collective of single women in Marathwada, Maharashtra. What happens when the singular turns into a collective?

The answers were manifold. Along with solidarity, sisterhood and revolution, the collective opened an ekal-hood that encompasses ideas of kaam (work), aaraam (rest), bandhuta (friendship), gyaan (knowledge), samadhan (resolution), astitva (existence) and adhikaar (rights).

In our fourth episode of 'Ekal In The City', meet the single women of Beed, Nanded, Tuljapur, Osmanabad, Shirgapur, Kaij and Ambajogai, who have helped us see various ways of being, and new imaginations of living.

We thank all the women of Ekal Mahila Sangathan who shared their stories with us, CORO from Mumbai who brought us together, our translator Vidya who helped us through the barrier of language and Sampada who lent her voice to a song from the film Kasav. This has truly been a collective effort.

अपने ही रंग में नहाउं मैं तो अपने ही संग मैं गाउं..

एक सवाल, वे महिलाएं जिन्होंने अपनी मर्जी से अपने पति को छोड़ दिया है, उनके लिए हिन्दी, अंग्रेजी या किसी भी भाषा में कौन सा शब्द है? अगर, आपको नहीं पता तो हम बताते हैं -एमएनटी (MNT)—मी नवराएला टाकले —यानि, मैंने पति को छोड़ा!

जब शब्द नहीं होते हैं तो बनाने पड़ते हैं! निरंतर पॉडकास्ट के सीरिज़ 'एकल इन द सिटी' में हम शहरों और गांवों के कई एकल आवाज़ों से आपकी मुलाकात करवाते रहे हैं. इस बार एपिसोड 4 में एक आवाज़ नहीं बल्कि मिलिए मराठवाडा, महाराष्ट् की एकल महिला संगठन से. मतलब एकल महिलाओं का समूह!

इसका क्या मतलब है? क्या होता है जब एकल, समूह में बदलता है?

एकजुटता, बहनापा और बदलाव की धरातल तैयार होती है, जिसकी ज़मीन पर खड़े काम, आराम, दोस्ती, ज्ञान, समाधान, अस्त्तिव, बंधुता, और अधिकार को देखने सामूहिक रूप से देखने का नज़रिया मिलता है, उसकी पहचान और ताकत विकसित होती है.

'एकल इन द सिटी के एपिसोड 4 में हम आपकी मुलाकात करवा रहे हैं महाराष्ट्र के मराठवाडा इलाके के बीड, नांदेड, तुलजापुर, ओसमानाबाद, शिरगापुर, काईजी और अंबाजोगाई की एकल महिलाओं से जिन्होंने हमें संगठित रूप से जीने एवं खुद के लिए खड़े होने की कहानियों से मोह लिया.

इस एपिसोड को संभव बनाने के लिए हम एकल महिला संगठन की महिलाओं का शुक्रिया अदा करना चाहते हैं जिन्होंने खुलकर हमसे बात की. साथ ही मुम्बई स्थित कोरो संस्था का आभार जिन्होंने संगठन की महिलाओं से हमारी पहचान करवाई. भाषा कोई बाधा न बन सके इसलिए सरल एवं सटीक अनुवाद के लिए अनुवादक विद्या का शुक्रिया. इसके साथ ही सम्पदा का बहुत आभार जिन्होंने अपनी आवाज़ में मराठी फिल्म 'केशव' के गानें को हिन्दी में गाकर पूरे एपिसोड को बांध लिया है. ये सच में एक सामूहिक प्रस्तुति है.

In this episode, Virginia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own travels to the tehsil of Ajmer, Kekri in Rajasthan, and meets Annu, a 31-year-old woman who gives it her own meaning. What does this room look like today? Annu talks about being ekal (single) in her room on a terrace, where she embarks on building a relationship with herself and her small town, more romantic and introspective than any other relationship she has been in.   

Annu's every day in this room, through the lens of a single woman, is poetic. She says 'Ek hi kamre mein maine bahut jagah bana li hai (I have made a lot of space in my one room)' and then takes us to multiple spaces she inhabits in a single day. What does it mean to have a space for yourself in the kasbah of Kekri?

एकल इन द सिटी के इस तीसरे एपिसोड में मिलिए अनु से जो छत पर बने अपने कमरे से हमारा परिचय करवाती हैं. आज से करीब 76 साल पहले वर्जिनिया वुल्फ ने अपने लेख ‘अ रूम ऑफ़ वन्स ओन’ में लिखा था कि रचनात्मक रचने के लिए लड़कियों और महिलाओं के पास अपना एक कमरा होना चाहिए. किसे पता था कि अजमेर जिले के केकड़ी गांव में 31 साल की अनु उस ‘अपना एक कमरा’ को इतने सम्मान के साथ चरितार्थ कर रही होगी.    

इस एपिसोड में अनु, अपने कमरे को एक दोस्त, परिवार के एक सदस्य की तरह देखती हैं. “मैं सुबह 5.30 बजे उठ जाती हूं. मुझे सुबह कटोरी में चाय पीना बहुत अच्छा लगता है. ये मोमेंट मेरी रोज़मर्रा की ज़िन्दगी में सबसे अहम है.”

क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि एकल लड़की के लिए चाभी का गुच्छा उसके अस्त्र-शस्त्र हो सकते हैं? कैसा होता है एकल होना? पडोसियों और दूसरे लोगों की नज़र में एकल लड़की या महिला जहां सवालों की लड़ी होती हैं, वहीं खुद के लिए उनके कई सवाल सुलझते जाते हैं. कैसे? आइए इस पॉडकास्ट के ज़रिए अनु के साथ उसकी भावनगरी में घूमते हुए इस गुत्थी के धागे साथ मिलकर खोलते हैं.

What does it mean to be a single woman, when it’s not in a metropolis? What are the experiences of being single, without the romanticisation of the urban? What is the nature of singlehood that may not yet be defined, but may be as rich as life itself? How single women make their homes and live and love in smaller towns and villages, is what we set out to document in Ekal in the City. We explore different kinds of ekal - being single - to celebrate life in its many ways of being.

In the second episode of the series, Madhuri talks to two single women from Uttar Pradesh - Seema, a 27 years old journalist from Banda who works for a Hindi Digital News Channel - Bharat 1 News  and Shabo, a 28 years old mobiliser in Vanangana, a rural community based women's rights collective, located in Bundelkhand and who is also an informal worker, working part time in the pad-making factories. They tell us how they found a family of ekal in the city.

Exploring natal family violence, divorce, finding of community and sisterhoods in the bylanes of Bundelkhand, this episode looks at what may emerge from violent histories for women, and often, the answers may be as surprising as the women themselves.

एकल इन द सिटी के दूसरे एपिसोड में माधुरी की मुलाक़ात उत्तर-प्रदेश में रहने वाली दो एकल महिलाओं से होती है. 27 वर्षीय सीमा, बांदा की रहने वाली हैं. वे पेशे से पत्रकार हैं और एक हिंदी डिजिटल न्यूज़ चैनल - भारत 1 न्यूज़ - के साथ काम करती हैं, वहीं 28 साल की शब्बो, बुंदेलखंड स्थित महिला अधिकार समूह 'वनांगना' की कार्यकर्ता हैं. वे संस्था के काम के बारे में लोगों को बताने एवं उन्हें संस्था से जोड़ने का काम करती हैं. दिन में कुछ घंटे वे एक सैनिटरी पैड बनाने वाली फैक्ट्री में भी काम करती हैं. इस एपिसोड में शब्बो और सीमा, दोनों ही खुलकर अपनी बातें साझा कर रही हैं. वे बताती हैं कि कैसे उन्हें शहर के भीतर एकल परिवार मिला.

बुंदेलखंड में जन्म लेने से लेकर वहां की गलियों में बड़े होने, पारिवारिक हिंसा की क्रूरता को झेलने से लेकर तलाक़ से गुज़रने के बाद एक समुदाय में आपसी बहनापे को पाना, यह एपिसोड उन घटनाओं का दस्तावेज़ है जो महिला हिंसा से जुड़ती हैं. ये कहानियां हमें बताती हैं कि महिलाओं के साथ होने वाली हिंसा के तार इतिहास की गलियों से होते हुए किस नए रुप में सामने आते हैं. अक्सर, इसकी पड़ताल से निकलने वाले जवाब हम महिलाओं को भी चौंका जाते हैं. आइए मिलकर सुनते हैं सीमा और शब्बो की कहानी.

In the first episode of the series, we bring to you a conversation between two types of 'singlehood'—a 25-year-old Madhuri from Delhi in the middle of her endless flat hunting, takes a train to partake a slice of ekal from 40-year-old Shabina in Banda, Uttar Pradesh. They roam the streets of Banda, a former gun town, and say things to each other that they may have only thought of before. What emerges is a tapestry of wonder and doubt, of curiosity and gumption, in an open-ended relationship of two single women with themselves, and their cities.  

महानगरों या बड़े शहरों से दूर किसी सुदूर इलाके में एकल महिला होने के क्या अर्थ हैं? शहरों की रुमानियत से दूर ऐसी जगहों पर एक महिला के अकेले रहने के अनुभव कैसे होते हैं? कोई एकल क्यों होता है? कौन से शब्द हैं जो इसे परिभाषित करते हैं? क्या यह संपूर्ण जीवन है या जीवन का एक हिस्सा?  

छोटे शहरों या गांवों में अकेले रहने वाली महिलाओं का जीवन कैसा होता है? घर और प्यार के इर्द-गिर्द वे अपना संसार कैसे रचती हैं, इन पहेलीनुमा सवालों को सुलझाने के लिए कई गांवों और शहरों की यात्राएं कर, हम एकल महिलाओं की कहानियां आपके लिए लेकर आए हैं.  

इस सीरीज़ के पहले एपिसोड में शहर और गांव एक दूसरे के साथ-साथ चलते हैं. 25 साल की माधुरी, महानगर में मेट्रो, ऑटो, कैब की सवारी करती, इधर-उधर भटक रही हैं ताकि उन्हें रहने के लिए एक फ्लैट मिल सके. इसी बीच काम के सिलसिले में उन्हें महानगर से बाहर जाना पड़ता है, अपनी भटकन को अपने बैग में पैक कर वे पहुंच जाती हैं उत्तर प्रदेश के बांदा इलाक़े में जिसे कभी ‘बंदूकों का नगर’ कहा जाता था.  

वहां, माधुरी की मुलाक़ात शबीना से होती है. शबीना की उम्र 40 साल है और वे इस कस्बे में कई सालों से अकेले रह रही हैं. अब, अपने-अपने अनुभवों के साथ दोनो बांदा की सड़कों पर घूम रही हैं. इस समय वे एक-दूसरे को ऐसी बातें बताती हैं जिनके बारे में शायद ख़ुद भी उन्होंने इससे पहले कभी सोचा नहीं था. इन अनुभवों में क्या-क्या छुपा है? शायद आश्चर्य, या संदेह, या फ़िर जिज्ञासाएं या कुछ ऐसा जो हमने पहले कभी न सुना न जाना हो!   आइए सुनते हैं अपने-अपने शहरों के साथ इन दोनों एकल महिलाओं के रिश्ते और उनके किस्से...

पटनावाली की दूसरी क़िस्त में स्वाती हमें मिला रही हैं ‘संस्कारानंद’ से जिनकी तर्क-विद्य़ा से आपके भी होश उड़ जाएंगें. एक ट्रेनिंग के दौरान 16 साल के लड़के से हुई मुलाक़ात और उसकी परेशानी का कारण जानने के बाद यह कहना अतिश्योक्ति नहीं कि महिलाओं को अपनी पसंद का कपड़ा पहनने, बाल कटवाने या कहीं आने जाने जैसी छोटी-छोटी आज़ादियों के लिए कई सवालों का जवाब देना पड़ता है.

We are turning an inward eye to look at our mental experiences, and how they intersect with societal structures.  

In an attempt to move away from pathological and clinical readings and move towards lived experiences, our podcast series Mann Ke Mukhaute interweaves fictional stories and experiential voice notes. We have tried hard and not been able to find the English word for ‘mann’ - the Hindi word that brings together brain, mind and heart, and hints at an intuitive inner truth.   

In the third episode of this podcast series, we address Care Work.   

Care Work is finally being recognised as emotional and physical labour, and its deep connection with gender are being investigated academically and socially. But what do caregivers themselves think of their work? We talked to Meena, Parmeshwar, Anna, Neelima and Bindu about their role as caregivers, and they looked around and said:  

“Yeh sab saaf rakhna, yaha se hum shuru karte hai par safai dikhti kahan hai!’” 

[It starts with keeping everything clean, but the cleanliness never shows.]  

Who is expected to take care and what happens to their mental health? What is the language of their mann as they take on this work? Does a gendered and caste-ist lens prescribe the role of care-giving to some people and not to others?  

We explore these questions with the story Maine Saaf Kiya Tumhara…- a transliteration of the original story I Cleaned the -  by Kanya D'Almeida, published in Granta. This story received the 2021 Commonwealth Short Story Prize.  

मानसिक स्वास्थ्य के तयशुदा खांचे से बाहर निकल, उसे आपबीती और जगबीती के अनुभवों एवं कहानियों के चश्मे से समझने की एक महत्वाकांक्षी पहल "मन के मुखौटे" के ज़रिए हम एक बार फ़िर वापस मानसिक स्वास्थ्य की तरफ़ मुड़कर देख रहे हैं. इस पॉडकास्ट सीरीज़ के नए एपिसोड में हम देखभाल से जुड़े मुद्दों पर सवालों और अनुभवों के ज़रिए इसे समझने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं.  

देखभाल के काम को लेकर हमारे बीच इतनी समझ तो बन चुकी है कि इसमें जितना शारीरिक श्रम लगता है उससे कहीं ज़्यादा मानसिक श्रम भी शामिल है. साथ ही जेंडर से जुड़े इसके गहरे रिश्ते की पड़ताल सामाजिक और अकादमिक दोनों ही तरीकों से की जा चुकी है. सवाल यह है कि किसी की देखभाल करने वाले ख़ुद अपने काम को कैसे देखते हैं? हमने मीना, परमेश्वर, एना, नीलिमा और बिंदु से बात कर उनसे इस सवाल का जवाब जानने की कोशिश की। उन्होंने कहा, “ये सब साफ़ रखना, यहां से हम शुरू करते हैं पर सफ़ाई दिखती कहां हैं?”  

किसी के देखभाल की अपेक्षा किससे की जाती है और उनके मानसिक स्वास्थ्य पर इसका क्या असर पड़ता है? बुरी तरह से थकान और निराशा के अलावा देखभाल करने वालों का मन कौन सी भाषा कहने की कोशिश करता है? इस काम में जाति और जेंडर की क्या भूमिका है? क्या ये काम सभी के लिए सामान्य है या किसी ख़ास जाति और जेंडर से जुड़े लोगों के ज़िम्मे ये काम आता है?  

मन के मुखौटे के तीसरे एपिसोड – ‘मैंने साफ़ किया तुम्हारा…’ में हम एक नई कहानी के ज़रिए उन लोगों को भी सुनेंगे जो देखभाल के काम में लगे हुए हैं.  उनके अनुभवों के ज़रिए हम इन सवालों के जवाब जानने की कोशिश करेंगे.

पटना में रहनेवाली स्वाती को कहानियां सुनना सुनाना पसंद है. वे रोज़मर्रा की ठेठ कहानियों को अपने बिहारी तड़के के साथ हमारे सामने ला रही हैं. स्वाती इन कहानियों के ज़रिए कुछ बेड़ियों को टटोलती हैं और उन्हें चुनौती देती हैं.

बिहार में अक्सर जब कोई लड़की ब्याह कर ससुराल आती है तो वो जया, सुषमा, अनीता के नाम से नहीं पहचानी जाती बल्कि वो दरभंगा वाली, मुज़फ्फरपुरवाली, बेगूसराय वाली पटनावाली जैसे नामों से जानी जाती हैं. सिर्फ़ नाम ही नहीं कई बार मर्ज़ी से बाहर घूमनेवाली औरतों को परकट्टी, बलकट्टी जैसे नामों से नवाज़ा जाता है. संस्कारों और रीति रिवाजों को न मानने वाली औरतें हमारे समाज में कोई रहस्यमयी गुत्थी की तरह चर्चा का विषय होती हैं.

When going into the cinema turned into clicking through OTT platforms during the pandemic, we adapted to the 1920 x 1080 screen size and relegated the good ol' Talkies to nostalgia. But cinema is not only a medium for story-telling, is it? It also stands as a character, bearing witness to a changing city—who enters, who leaves mid-way, and who stays.

Gulabi Talkies, Vaidehi's story in Kannada, tells the story of a single-screen theatre in a small town shaking up women's lives like a storm in a tea-cup. Through the character of Lillibai, a midwife turned gatekeeper of the Talkies, the theatre births for women a new understanding and identity, just like a midwife does.

In this episode, the story has been transliterated in Hindi with a musical imagination of dialogues and tracks from 1970s/1980s Bollywood cinema that invoke our collective sheher, kasbah, and gaon.

महामारी की वजह से जब हमारे थियेटरों पर ताले जड़ गए तो हमने उनकी याद में अपने को 1920X1080 के टीवी स्क्रीन में समेट पर ऑनलाइन डिजिटल फ़िल्मों और सीरियलों में ख़ुद को डुबो लिया. लेकिन, एक सिनेमाघर, मल्टीप्लेक्स, सिंगल स्क्रीन पर्दे की किसी शहर के बनने में क्या भूमिका होती है? क्या ये सिर्फ़ बड़े पर्दे पर किसी कहानी को हमारे लिए जीवित भर करते हैं या ये शहर के भीतर रह रहे किरदारों की ज़िन्दगियां भी बदलते हैं.

कन्नड़ कहानी गुलाबी  टॉकीज़  इस जिज्ञासा का बहुत मार्मिक ढंग से जवाब देती है. लेखक वैदेही की इस कहानी का हिन्दी अनुवाद कर इसे निरंतर रेडियों के ज़रिए हम आपके साथ साझा कर रहे हैं. यह कहानी एक सिंगल स्क्रीन पर्दे के पीछे की कहानी है जिसने उस छोटे से कस्बे की औरतों की ज़िन्दगी में रातों-रात ही तहलका मचा दिया. कहानी की मुख्य किरदार लिलीबाई – जो एक दाई का काम करती-करती थियेटर के गेटकीपर का काम भी संभालने लगती है - की कहानी में थियेटर उसी तरह नए रूप में जन्म लेता है जैसे एक दाई की ज़िन्दगी में कोई नया बच्चा पैदा होता है.

निरंतर रेडियो के लिए इस कहानी को हिन्दी में रूपांतरित करते हुए इसमें 1970-80 के दौर की अनुभूतियों को हिन्दी गानों के ज़रिए वैसा का वैसा भाव देने की कोशिश की गई है जिससे एक शहर या कस्बा हमारे सामने जीवित हो उठता है. तो फौरन ही इस कहानी को सुनें... लिलीबाई तो पहले से गेट पर खड़ी आपका इंतज़ार कर ही रही है.

As part of our Public Health issue, we are turning an inward eye to look at our mental experiences, and how they intersect with the health and state systems.  In an attempt to move away from pathological and clinical readings and move towards learning from lived experiences, our podcast series Mann Ke Mukhauteinterweaves fictional stories and experiential voice notes. We are locating our site of exploration in the mann - the Hindi word that brings together brain, mind and heart, and hints at an intuitive inner truth.   

In our first episode, we address grief. As a mental and emotional experience that defined and transformed our lives in the past 18 months, this episode transliterates Ahana Chaudhuri’s Grief is a Stubborn Animal’* into Adiyal Dukh. The story is punctuated with people’s voices, people generous enough to share their experience of grief, and its coping, with all of us.
